Week to go. Let’s kick it off. I’m hoping the second half vs Dresden and the much more balanced and improved performance puts an end to the 3-5-2 nonsense. No other signings aside my team would be as follows, which I fully expect will not be what he puts out as he tried to shoehorn in 3 RB’s at CB and Whelan.
Steer
De Laet
Chester
Jedinak
Hutton
Bjarnason
Hourihane
Adomah
Green
Grealish
Kodjia
4-4-1-1
-
8 days...longest build-up to a match thread ever?! Hopefully our squad will look a bit different this time next week in a good way and we have a half-decent left-footed left full-back.
-
From what we have available I'd go with,
Steer
Hutton
Chester
Elphick
De Laet
Jedinak
Adomah
Hourihane
Grealish
Green
Kodjia
-
Poll added.
-
Two decent enough sides picked by TV and Ads but I hope we have a couple of new additions by the time we kick off. Jedinak in midfield for me but I’d hope for another centre back to come in.
-
Poll added.
Ta Leeg
-
0-0
-
I’m going 1-1
-
Agree we definitely shouldn't play 352
I'd play Whelan. I think he's looked good in pre season
De Laet at right back
Elphick over jedinak for me - I think
-
0-2 away win.
-
Just win please Villa.
Start the season with a win.
We have failed to do that the past two years and we have been playing catch up.
START WITH A BLOODY WIN.
FTF

I reckon a combination of Hull not being one of the better teams in this division and the boost in morale from the takeover will result in a Villa win. Also, I am sure everyone will be delighted to know that I have not included a Villa win in my weekend bets.

I should hope not. The match is on Monday.

Monday is included on the weekend coupon. ;)
-
bad feeling about this. 2-0
-
We played Hull first last season, didn't we? Shouldn't be allowed. We'll lose.
-
What I'd like to see is
Steer
Chester - NEW CB - RDL
Adomah - Jedi - Bjarnason - NEW LB/LM
Grealish
Green Kodjia
So 2 forwards starting fairly wide with Jack in as a 10 so we're letting their CBs have the ball but occupying the DM and Fullbacks. Then I have Adomah and a new guy starting higher than wingbacks and expected to get forward a lot quicker. At the back Chester and RDL have the pace and technical ability to bring the ball out and cover in behind the wing backs but I'd want someone in with them to win everything in the air and e the aggressive one who comes out to win the ball. Jedi would be the slightly deeper midfielder but because it is largely just 2 in there I'd add Thor for his energy. Everyone Could play the role I've given them well so it plays to our strengths but Bruce would never be adventurous enough to try it.
I expect a 451 very similar to the Final but with Steer, Elphick, Green and Kodjia all replacing the players who've left.
-
I'm going for a 1-0 Villa win.

That would be great, mind you look what happened last time we won our first match.
Going for 1 nil Villa, last minute winner from Andre, a 30 yard screamer!
-
Unless it's Snoddy, I doubt that any players coming in between now and Monday will start
-
The revolution will be televised
...... dull draw
-
Uninspiring 1-1, Jack to score, if he is still at the club
-
Draw 1-1
-
2-0 we wont have a shot on target.
-
We played Hull first last season, didn't we? Shouldn't be allowed. We'll lose.
Yeah but we were homies then.

I just think there a too many square pegs in round holes if we play 3-5-2 so as it stands would go with:
Steer
De Laet Chester Jedinak Hutton
Whelan
Grealish Hourihane
Adomah Kodjia Green
Hopefully there will be a few new faces coming in this week and although I initially winced at the idea of opening the season on a Monday night, it might work in our favour in that regard.

I like this considering what we have but would swap Jedinak for Elphick as I believe in playing players in their right positions and Elmo for RDL.
Subs:
Bunn
Jedinak (only just back from WC)
DeLaet (Massive injury set back previosly)
Taylor
Lansbury
Doyle-Hayes
Barney
Although we could do with some players we certainly have a flexible bench to give us some options - not that SB will know that

Go with Toronto's team and a dull draw to get us in the right frame of mind for the season!

I am still holding out hope that a centre-half will come in before the close of play on Friday.
-
Hull to win.
Grealish gone.
H&V melt down.
-
We have brought a keeper in but we still need a centre half and a goalscorer at the very least. It is a shame the takeover happened too late for us to sign Grabban permanently.
-
I’ve bought my ticket for this one. Surprisingly there’s still quite a few left. 2-2. Professor Green with both.
-
We could do with a flying start this time Brucey, so let’s FTF.
-
0-0 for me. A cautious season opener.
-
5-5
-
Based on his World Cup predictions, I'm going for the complete opposite of whatever Damo predicted.
I'm praying he went for a 2-0 defeat.
Ads team looks good enough to get the victory providing we turn up for 45 minutes.
-
I see we are on SKY three times in August. We spent more Saturdays on SKY last season than Ant and Dec spent on ITV (especially Ant).
-
I've only just discovered Ant and Dec. Honestly, I'd rather watch the Villa (in slow motion).
What a pair of twats.
-
0-2
Grealish, Adomah
-
Be a draw Think this was our first away back in promotion year 74/75 either this away or York Hull fans with their silver docs those were the days
-
Ref is Andrew Madley.
He was in charge of our opening game versus Hull last season and then Blues, 'Boro and Sunderland away.
-
Think we will lose this 1-0, slow start to the season.
-

First 2 matches were away, can't remember that happening since then, York first then Hull. Happy days.

13/14 when we had Arsenal and then Chelsea. Although it was because of the Super Cup rather than how it was intended iirc.
-
Beat Arsenal but lost at Chelsea even though we played better against the latter. Okore and the Beast looked great if I'm remembering correctly.

For anyone in the US, the game is on ESPN+ which requires a subscription (they offer a free 7 day trial for new subscribers), http://www.espn.com/watch/espnplus (http://www.espn.com/watch/espnplus)

That Chelsea game, didn’t Ivanvic get a late winner despite the fact he should have been sent off for an elbow earlier in the game?
-
And Appleyard punched the ball and no penalty was given.

De Laet ahead of Elmo and Bree? Right back...the one area where we continue to have a multitude of options.
Jedinak can't have much pre-season done, wouldn't be surprised to see Elphick in ahead of him if he is still at the club.
It's still a side that should be beating Hull. Hopefully Green can start off the season well.
-
De Laet has looked good in pre season. Wish I could say the same about Kodja …..
-
With SB's negative safety first mindset in full flow I predict a low scoring bore draw. I'll go 1-1.
-
Had a phone call two hours ago.
"Got a job in Hull, three days, any chance you can do it?"
"When?"
"Short notice; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday next week."
Considering how much time I spend working away, it'll be the first time I've been working somewhere when the Villa have rolled into town since Sunderland in 1996!
So I've gone and got meself a ticket.
Nailed on shite 0-0.
-
3 days in Hull, hope that the game is the highlight mate.
-

We could draw 0-0 and the game would still be the highlight.

3 days in Hull
It deserves it's own thread.

I agree - I once spent 3 days in Hull - never again if I can help it.
-
No idea. 1-0 to someone.
-
Wouldn't shock me if it's 0-0 or 1-1.
Have Hull signed anyone of note? All I know is they've lost Dawson and Abel Hernandez, two of their best players.
-

Bloody hell, what a blast from the past. Which reminds me, we haven't been linked with Benni McCarthy yet.

That Moscow game, thought the blond haired winger called Krasic was the best player on the pitch at VP. He signed for Juventus shortly afterwards but flopped there.
Now plays for Lechia Gdansk.

Yeah, I remember Krasic looking good. Most of their back line played for Russia for over 10 years.

Yep Akinfeev in goal and Ignasevitch also played.

Bruce will start as he finished so 0-0 unless Ull score.
-
0-0 and me telling my wife to change the channel on the telly, as i am sure this is a repeat of the same dross I was watching a few months before
And I have re-newed my season ticket
Anyone who is travelling to Hull and back you have my utmost admiration.
-
Kodjia fit so I guess he'll have to start. Would like to see BB in a midfield three with Grealish and Hourihane, Green on the left, Albert on the right. Elmohamady rb, Hutton lb, RDL partnering Chester...this managerial lark seems a doddle.
-

Not enough players out of position, try again!
-
This has got 0-0 written all over it. I have a severe sense of foreboding that we’ll limp into the season like last year and be well adrift of the leaders again by the end of August. There is some mitigation for that but despite the takeover I’m just not getting a sense of a club with a determined focus to hit the ground running. Either that or I’m a miserable git.
-

I don't get why people say this. The only players he played out of position on a regualar basis last season were Adomah and Hutton and they did ok. Onomah got pushed out wide now and again but that was more or less it I think.

Jedinak at centre back, a fair few times late in the season Grabban was pushed onto the left wing.
-
Apparently Hepburn Murphy or what ever his name is won't be fit for this one so I'm going to say narrow defeat. Had he been I think we'd have romped to victory.

Whelan as a box to box midfielder, Hattrick scoring Houriance moved back to defensive midfield. The lad from Man Utd at right back (when we had 3 or 4 on the bench).
-
I don't think I ever saw Whelan playing box-to box, he always seem to be sitting in front of the back four. He may have played as part of a two man midfield now and again but it wasn't every game, just like Grabban going out wide and Jedinak playing centre half wasn't. Moving Hourihane back after he got that hat-trick was a bit of a waste mind.
-
Fulham away, how many changes to cope with 1 injury?
-

You probably never saw as his little knackered old legs rarely got box to box but for far too many games he was playing in the more advanced role alongside Hourianne. I defended Whelan a lot last season and it was obvious that he tired during games due to the role he was playing. Later in the season he dropped back to the more defensive midfielder role, he mainly showed his value to the team.
-
It wasn't every game but it was regular enough to be noticeable or people wouldn't have noticed it and made comments.
Aside from that in a team of 11 having 2 players playing in positions they'd never played before that season, mainly because you'd overloaded the squad with right sided players and sold alomst everyone who can play left, isn't good planning. Adomah's goals masked a little how ineffective he was in most games and Hutton, whilst being defensively solid, meant we had absolutely no option for the overlap. With Snod cutting in on the other wing and rarely playing Elmo in we were very narrow and a lot of teams nullified us because of it. Our extra quality meant that we won many of those games with a goal from nothing but it's still a problem we need to address, especially now some of that quality has left.
-
4-4-1-1
Saw this bit at the bottom and thought WTF is that scoreline??Lol!!
-
From what we have available I'd go with,
Steer
Hutton
Chester
Elphick
De Laet
Jedinak
Adomah
Hourihane
Grealish
Green
Kodjia
I'd play Thor instead of Jedinak, but would agree with the rest of the team.

Ditto - Thor for Jedinak and that should be enough for the 3 points
-
By all accounts Hull as piss poor and happy to avoid relegation.
Great chance for Green and Kodja to shine.
0-4 Villa.

Every game is must win. If we can get 138 points, it'll stand us in good stead for our FFP points deduction.

The issue I have is every game is a must win game.

Adomah's goals masked a little how ineffective he was in most games
You have to admire the use of logic in this post. Those pesky ineffective goals ruined everything.
-
Albert is a fine player at this level, we just need to ensure we don’t burn him out.
-
He did dip after xmas. Guess his scoring rate was never going to be maintained but thought his general game dropped off. Green actually being fit would've been useful at that point to give him a rest.
-

Yep, scoring in a 3rd of the games means he must've played well in the other 2/3rds, that's clearly the sensible logic here. If you're in doubt though feel free to read back through the match and post match threads on here, you won't find many people saying he played well in the games where he didn't score and it was because playing on that wing didn't look natural to him. If we'd have let him and Snoddy swap wings during games it would've helped a lot.
On top of that he's another one who was clearly in need of a rest in the last few weeks.
-
I thought Adomah was great last season. If anything, he should have scored more than he did but being top scorer from the wing is not to be sniffed at. He probably helped set up a few as well.
-

Agreed on that bit, i think he was jaded late on in the season and it effected his performances. He looked lively and back to something like his best in the pre season game in Dresden. Hopefully if we can get Snodgrass back we can mix it up with those two and the fit again and promising looking Green. We could also look to play Elmo right side at times given the number of full backs we have.
-
... it was because playing on that wing didn't look natural to him. If we'd have let him and Snoddy swap wings during games it would've helped a lot.
This is a really important point; one made severally by several posters on here during the course of last season.
Adomah and Snodgrass were effective, for sure, at the Championship level. But how much more effective would both had been if they hadn't been 'chained' to the wrong wing?! Opponents soon sussed out the manager's 'crafty' plan that each could cut inside onto their stronger foot and let go a shot, perhaps.
As the season wore on, both got more and more ineffectual, and the coaching staff didn't seem to see that it was a tired approach by players who themselves were probably tired.
I hope that our wingers are not hobbled by our manager's tactics this season. Or, maybe, we're not going to play wingers this season ….
-

You do realise that is Snodgrass's preferred side/position?

The reason he stated for leaving spam is that he was played out of position eg on left. It was almost like a prenuptial that he played on right for us.

Correct.
-
1-1, after this summer a draw to start the campaign would be excellent, if we get all 3 points incredible.
-
I think we will get 11 points in August the fixtures have been kind to us.
-
46 cup finals
-

Like many attacking players, Adomah has his good spells along with the not so good ones. He had more good spells than bad last season, but like Snodgrass, he should have been rotated at times.
-
I'd be happy to start with a draw.
-
I'd be happy to start with a draw.
I wouldn't. I think Hull will be a bottom half of the table side and the sort of team we need to be beating home or away if we are to have any chance of finishing in the top six.

We drew with them twice last season and still finished comfortably top 6. I get what you're saying though.
For me we have a reasonably good 6-7 games to start and I'd say 11 points by start of September should be the target.
-
I like the fact that we are currently 15th in the table despite not having played. Will Bruce take advantage of this to push up into the promotion? A 0-5 thrashing of Hull will take us to the top of the table. Piece of piss really!
-
Even a measly five-one win would put us top on alphabetical order.
-
It's in the bag then.
-
Surely Grealish scoring tonight is written in the stars.
Im feeling optimistic about the game. 3-1 win.
-
I reckon Grealish will turn on the style tonight in a 0-2 Villa victory. If he does (!), I fully expect his value to go bonkers - as obscenely-wedged Premiershitters panic into a last-ditch purchase (and thus ending Spuds interest).
COYL!
-
Much weaker team that finished last season, I reckon 3-1 to Hull.
-
that's over stating it in my opinion.
-
Even a measly five-one win would put us top on alphabetical order.
Most on here would still complain about the one conceded.

No idea, but the squad to travel the day before so if anyone like Grealish is not there, it probably would have got out by now.

0-1 Hourihane

I imagine Ads will be there as usual, Des Little too. The day they miss a Villa game in person will be the day the music stops.
-
Aye I'm going. Half day at work. Pondering when to go as the M62 is a bugger but I'm nae keen on turning up in Hull too early. #firstworldproblems
-
I predict we wont be playing a back three
-
but might well be on Saturday
-
I am a bit apprehensive about tonight if we go with 3-5-2. I just think there are going to be too many players playing out of position in that formation as it stands and it could be a real mess.
-
Don't be surprised to see Bruce turn up in a waistcoat.
-
No excuses. Bruce says the players are ready.

Luckily away from the iPad!
Wonderful stuff, Rudy Can’t Fail.
-
Don't be surprised to see Bruce turn up in a waistcoat.
If he does, it will have to be from David Byrne's 1983 wardrobe.
-
A draw away in the opening game wouldn't be too bad. But Hull are mediocre at best. Think they will slowly improve over the season, but the first game might be a good time to catch them. Very winnable opener. 1-2 to Villa! Will go for Double A and Grealish to get the goals.
-
No excuses. Bruce says the players are ready.
So did the opposition manager. No excuses for him either then.
Credible away point it is then as i wouldn't want either to be outed as lying

Hull 21/10 The Draw 22/10 Villa 13/10. I wrote out a bet on Villa to win 1-0 at 8/1 but haven't got around to putting it on. So Sods Law will mean we will win 1-0, but bet or no bet I will take that.

What are the chances of us playing with the speed and passion Leeds showed yesterday?
Ha! Yeah, right. Our pre-season preparation will have been to run a lot.

As opposed to calling it 'laboured' I prefer to class it as the Villa version of Barcelona's 'tiki taka' patient approach. ;)

This will be the 71st season I have followed Villa home and away. I have never felt so uncaring at the prospect of a new season.
-
2-1 Villa. Unconvincing performance, late winner, 3 points.
-
Anyone think Green is playing ?
And who is Gk??
I don't have Hull as too good so take a 1-2 win as can inagjbe conceding
-
Can't wait to see if we wear the home or away kit.
1-1
-
I predict we wont be playing a back three
Let's hope not!

Well that would somewhat undermine pre-season prep.

Maybe it was a cunning plan to confuse Hull.

Tactics Tim was good at that. Lull the opposition into a false sense of security by playing crap.

Compared to you Brian I am a mere rookie at watching for 56 years - I too am not as excited about the start of the season as I used to be. We lack quality in the spine of the team or those favoured appear injury prone - oh for a Martin Laursen,Olaf Mellburg, Jimmy Rimmer and Peter Withe or Andy Gray
-
Taylor starts, as does Jack.

45 years and counting. :(

Do your worst Bruce. I can do pain.
