Title: Hull City vs Aston Villa Pre Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on July 29, 2018, 05:07:52 PM
Week to go. Let’s kick it off. I’m hoping the second half vs Dresden and the much more balanced and improved performance puts an end to the 3-5-2 nonsense. No other signings aside my team would be as follows, which I fully expect will not be what he puts out as he tried to shoehorn in 3 RB’s at CB and Whelan.

Steer
De Laet
Chester
Jedinak
Hutton
Bjarnason
Hourihane
Adomah
Green
Grealish
Kodjia

4-4-1-1

8 days...longest build-up to a match thread ever?! Hopefully our squad will look a bit different this time next week in a good way and we have a half-decent left-footed left full-back.

From what we have available I'd go with,

Steer

Hutton
Chester
Elphick
De Laet

Jedinak

Adomah
Hourihane
Grealish
Green

Kodjia

Two decent enough sides picked by TV and Ads but I hope we have a couple of new additions by the time we kick off.  Jedinak in midfield for me but I’d hope for another centre back to come in.

Agree we definitely shouldn't play 352

I'd play Whelan. I think he's looked good in pre season

De Laet at right back

Elphick over jedinak for me - I think

START WITH A BLOODY WIN.

I reckon a combination of Hull not being one of the better teams in this division and the boost in morale from the takeover will result in a Villa win. Also, I am sure everyone will be delighted to know that I have not included a Villa win in my weekend bets.

What I'd like to see is

                        Steer

Chester - NEW CB - RDL

Adomah - Jedi - Bjarnason - NEW LB/LM

                   Grealish
  Green                               Kodjia

So 2 forwards starting fairly wide with Jack in as a 10 so we're letting their CBs have the ball but occupying the DM and Fullbacks.  Then I have Adomah and a new guy starting higher than wingbacks and expected to get forward a lot quicker. At the back Chester and RDL have the pace and technical ability to bring the ball out and cover in behind the wing backs but I'd want someone in with them to win everything in the air and e the aggressive one who comes out to win the ball.  Jedi would be the slightly deeper midfielder but because it is largely just 2 in there I'd add Thor for his energy.  Everyone Could play the role I've given them well so it plays to our strengths but Bruce would never be adventurous enough to try it.

I expect a 451 very similar to the Final but with Steer, Elphick, Green and Kodjia all replacing the players who've left.

I just think there a too many square pegs in round holes if we play 3-5-2 so as it stands would go with:

                            Steer

De Laet      Chester           Jedinak      Hutton

                           Whelan

                 Grealish       Hourihane

Adomah                 Kodjia                  Green

Hopefully there will be a few new faces coming in this week and although I initially winced at the idea of opening the season on a Monday night, it might work in our favour in that regard.

I like this considering what we have but would swap Jedinak for Elphick as I believe in playing players in their right positions and Elmo for RDL.

Subs:
Bunn
Jedinak (only just back from WC)
DeLaet (Massive injury set back previosly)
Taylor
Lansbury
Doyle-Hayes
Barney

Although we could do with some players we certainly have a flexible bench to give us some options - not that SB will know that

We have brought a keeper in but we still need a centre half and a goalscorer at the very least. It is a shame the takeover happened too late for us to sign Grabban permanently.

De Laet ahead of Elmo and Bree? Right back...the one area where we continue to have a multitude of options.

Jedinak can't have much pre-season done, wouldn't be surprised to see Elphick in ahead of him if he is still at the club.

It's still a side that should be beating Hull. Hopefully Green can start off the season well.

Had a phone call two hours ago.
"Got a job in Hull, three days, any chance you can do it?"
"When?"
"Short notice; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday next week."

Considering how much time I spend working away, it'll be the first time I've been working somewhere when the Villa have rolled into town since Sunderland in 1996!

So I've gone and got meself a ticket.

Nailed on shite 0-0.

This has got 0-0 written all over it. I have a severe sense of foreboding that we’ll limp into the season like last year and be well adrift of the leaders again by the end of August. There is some mitigation for that but despite the takeover I’m just not getting a sense of a club with a determined focus to hit the ground running. Either that or I’m a miserable git.

I don't get why people say this. The only players he played out of position on a regualar basis last season were Adomah and Hutton and they did ok. Onomah got pushed out wide now and again but that was more or less it I think.

I don't think I ever saw Whelan playing box-to box, he always seem to be sitting in front of the back four. He may have played as part of a two man midfield now and again but it wasn't every game, just like Grabban going out wide and Jedinak playing centre half wasn't. Moving Hourihane back after he got that hat-trick was a bit of a waste mind.

You probably never saw as his little knackered old legs rarely got box to box but for far too many games he was playing in the more advanced role alongside Hourianne. I defended Whelan a lot last season and it was obvious that he tired during games due to the role he was playing. Later in the season he dropped back to the more defensive midfielder role, he mainly showed his value to the team.

It wasn't every game but it was regular enough to be noticeable or people wouldn't have noticed it and made comments.

Aside from that in a team of 11 having 2 players playing in positions they'd never played before that season, mainly because you'd overloaded the squad with right sided players and sold alomst everyone who can play left, isn't good planning.  Adomah's goals masked a little how ineffective he was in most games and Hutton, whilst being defensively solid, meant we had absolutely no option for the overlap. With Snod cutting in on the other wing and rarely playing Elmo in we were very narrow and a lot of teams nullified us because of it.  Our extra quality meant that we won many of those games with a goal from nothing but it's still a problem we need to address, especially now some of that quality has left.

From what we have available I'd go with,

Steer

Hutton
Chester
Elphick
De Laet

Jedinak

Adomah
Hourihane
Grealish
Green

Kodjia

I'd play Thor instead of Jedinak, but would agree with the rest of the team.

Great chance for Green and Kodja to shine.

0-4 Villa.

He did dip after xmas. Guess his scoring rate was never going to be maintained but thought his general game dropped off. Green actually being fit would've been useful at that point to give him a rest.

Yep, scoring in a 3rd of the games means he must've played well in the other 2/3rds, that's clearly the sensible logic here.  If you're in doubt though feel free to read back through the match and post match threads on here, you won't find many people saying he played well in the games where he didn't score and it was because playing on that wing didn't look natural to him.  If we'd have let him and Snoddy swap wings during games it would've helped a lot.

On top of that he's another one who was clearly in need of a rest in the last few weeks.

I thought Adomah was great last season. If anything, he should have scored more than he did but being top scorer from the wing is not to be sniffed at. He probably helped set up a few as well.

Agreed on that bit, i think he was jaded late on in the season and it effected his performances. He looked lively and back to something like his best in the pre season game in Dresden. Hopefully if we can get Snodgrass back we can mix it up with those two and the fit again and promising looking Green. We could also look to play Elmo right side at times given the number of full backs we have.

This is a really important point; one made severally by several posters on here during the course of last season.
Adomah and Snodgrass were effective, for sure, at the Championship level. But how much more effective would both had been if they hadn't been 'chained' to the wrong wing?! Opponents soon sussed out the manager's 'crafty' plan that each could cut inside onto their stronger foot and let go a shot, perhaps.
As the season wore on, both got more and more ineffectual, and the coaching staff didn't seem to see that it was a tired approach by players who themselves were probably tired.

I hope that our wingers are not hobbled by our manager's tactics this season. Or, maybe, we're not going to play wingers this season ….

The reason he stated for leaving spam is that he was played out of position eg on left.  It was almost like a prenuptial that he played on right for us.

Like many attacking players, Adomah has his good spells along with the not so good ones.  He had more good spells than bad last season, but like Snodgrass, he should have been rotated at times.

We drew with them twice last season and still finished comfortably top 6. I get what you're saying though.

For me we have a reasonably good 6-7 games to start and I'd say 11 points by start of September should be the target.

A draw away in the opening game wouldn't be too bad.  But Hull are mediocre at best.  Think they will slowly improve over the season, but the first game might be a good time to catch them.  Very winnable opener.  1-2 to Villa! Will go for Double A and Grealish to get the goals.
