Overall very comfortable. We lost a key player before the game, and one during it. We have numerous injuries. So all in all a very good afternoon.
Well done Kodjia for two well taken goals
4 wins out 5 and we should have got something from Huddersfield having been the better side. Doing ok even if it is a bit too late to affect the playoffs
-
A good day all round.
-
Hurrah! :)
-
We need to keep this up, build for next season and hit it with some real confidence and momentum. Build up the winning habit, even when not playing well, winning at all costs. The clean sheets are returning as well now. A good win against play off candidates.
-
Late blues goal moves us up another place to 12th.
-
I never thought we'd go up this year so if we can finish the season looking a candidate for automatic promotion next year I'll be happy
We're extremely reliant on kodjia for goals though. That needs to change
-
This win is not to be underestimated. Real fighting against adversity somethjng that's been missing for years. Our injury list is ridiculous however.
-

We do have another expensive striker
-
Excellent win, didnt expect it to be honest. 15 league goals for Kodjia - can he break the twenty goal barrier? No one has done that in the league for us since Withe in 1981! Platt got 19 twice and Benteke got 19 in his first season. Excellent win.
-
Another clean sheet and overall very comfortable.
It is progress, we've let 1 goal in now in 5 games is it? Just need to still build on the belief that we are the better team and try and control the game more. We still need goals from elsewhere. Green when fit might help, as with Hogan. Maybe once RHM is fit that could be another outlet?
Well done Villa.

good result, particularly with all the absentees through injury.
dont think we have conceded many since the three at the back experiment was killed, Taylor in for Amavi on the left make have made us a bit more solid too.
Are Sheff Wed the highest ranked team we have beaten at home this year?

yep Brontebilly, previously it was Fulham. I watched Soccer Saturday in local pub and pissed off the egg chasers who wanted the rugby on every telly. Tough shit. And I met another local Villa fan today in the same pub. Happy days and hello to you again mate if you are reading this!
-
Well done Villa. Good sporting day so far. Winnable game next week should see us comfortably in top half before the break.
-
We win again..
-
Jedinak had a great game at centre half and Hutton did well at right midfield when he came on - both having to play out of position. We look very solid at the moment - credit to what was a very patched up side on the day.
And we are working much harder when we don't have the ball which makes a huge difference.
-
We win again..
We're gonna break down their defences one by one.
-
Anyone know what the attendance was today?
-
Well done Villa, great result and goals by Kodjia. Very happy Villans in Albufeira tonight!
-
That win was all down to Kungs vs Cookin' on 3 Burners.

Still making my way home via picking up some food. Hutton MotM for me.

And Dave Shelley is on fire!
-
Lansbury has an Achilles injury according to SB. Hopefully not too serious. You have to question the fitness of this squad. A lot of soft tissue injuries and what seems like poor overall conditioning.
-
Just back. Played well today given the injuries and I thought Adomah had a good game laying on one for Kodjia and one each for Hutton who should have buried it and for Hourihane. I also thought Bree had a good afternoon. what's the news on Angela?

Whoo-Hoo! I remembered to touch the elephants in the room today. I forgot on Tuesday for which I apologise most profusely.
-
I think after the shit storm that was last year, I hope this season has been like putting a tanker into reverse.
It's starting to feel like it now. Nice little head of steam we're getting now.
-
Another win, another clean sheet and another brick to add to the confidence wall. The injury situation is disconcerting though. Well done Villa.

Seemed like more than that.
-
Lansbury injured in warm up, Baker off injured - is there no end to these injuries? I think that's 11 out now?? Squad down to the bare bones so to pick up 3 points in a battling win against one of the teams in the play-off positions deserves pats on backs all round. Could have made things more comfortable if Hutton and Hourihane had put their chances away. Kodjia's goals both well worked - think that puts him on 15 now - but Jedinak MOTM for me, especially as he had to play out of position for a while - won everything in the air, but his distribution was a bit iffy at times. And I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but McCafu made a difference when he came on. Thought it was quite telling that Bruce preferred to try Jedinak at centre back rather than bring Mad Tom on straight away. Bannan bossed the midfield for them - always seemed to find loads of space and distributed the ball well, but at the end of the day they didn't carry much of a threat up top. Three points, clean sheet, not pretty, but considering the injuries I'll settle for that.
-
Just got back in after being at the game earlier. Can't say we were brilliant, but another win and clean sheet. Interesting that Bruce changed formation to 4-4-2 when Baker went off (least surprising injury of the past few weeks) and them going down to ten was an obvious help. Going to 4-4-2 changed things a bit, as Jedinak did well at CB, Kodjia looks better with a strike partner and Hutton did well on the right wing.
Was interested to see what Bannan was like and it was pretty much the same as I remembered - neat and tidy on the ball, some needless give aways and generally ineffective.
-
Lansbury injured in warm up, Baker off injured - is there no end to these injuries? I think that's 11 out now??
13 now I make it who could be involved with the squad- Lansbury, Baker, Bacuna (not injured but still out), De Laet, Kozak, Gabby, RHM, Green, Hogan, Steer, Lyden, Bjarnesen, Grealish.
-
Lansbury has an Achilles injury according to SB. Hopefully not too serious. You have to question the fitness of this squad. A lot of soft tissue injuries and what seems like poor overall conditioning.
Improving fitness in a squad midway during the season tends to have that effect. Not helped by some of the recent signings like Bjarnason and Lansbury were short of match fitness before they joined so immediately back playing 2 games a week hardly helps. Shouldn't be happening though to the extent we are seeing without a major flaw in the training regime.
The solid base should be put in during pre season. Ours must have been a holiday camp again last summer.
-
Good result, another clean sheet, and we're now truly starting to look like a team with a defence we can rely on. I think we're now treating the rest of the season like its a pre-season in preparation for next. Think we'll go up next year, and I've put my money where my mouth is because I've just bought a season ticket for next season after a gap of 3 years.
Up the Villa!
-
Good result. Got to be pleased with that really. Winning against bottom feeders is one thing, but we've got to be getting results like this against the top 6. We need to be getting the results now that we really should have been getting throughout most of the season and get momentum for next season.
Yes we're reliant on Kodjia, but lets be honest, most sides generally have that one player who stands out. Also give credit to Adomah. He's not the most consistent throughout a 90 minutes, and has quiet patches, but he will still create chances and he seems to have a great understanding with Kodjia. Adomah has 9 or so assists now and most of those have been for Kodjia I imagine.
-
Walking to the ground a coach load of Wednesday fans emptied and quickly started singing "I'd rather be a Paki than a Blade". On a UK Street, in 2017. Wankers.
More injuries! Lansbury was a blow as I felt we lost his quality on the ball. The tactical change to get a body closer to Adomah worked.
We didn't create much first half and limited them to the one effort where we gave the ball away and Winnall had an opportunity.
Second half, we should have 3 or 4 more.
On balance it was very comfortable, even if our use of the ball could have been better. Jedinak dominated Rhodes at centre half, while I thought Hourihane and Gardner pressed the life out of them. If anything we bullied them.
5 games, 4 wins and 4 clean sheets, only one goal against. We've turned a corner.
-
Didn't see any of the game, but you have to be happy with a 2-0 win against one of the bigger teams in the division who are having a decent season.
-
Good result under any circumstances but to do it with so many out is really pleasing.
-
On the basis of our recent upturn in form and results, I cant see any reason why we can't win our next four, all doable if some of our crocks recover quickly.
-
I thought Taylor and Amavi worked well together today. I was quite sceptical about Taylor when he first arrived but he seems to be developing into quite a solid performer for us.
-
Yeah I've been impressed with Taylor as well as the defence as a whole. They seem to play as a unit these days. Have to say Jedinak is fast becoming my favourite player. When was the last time he didn't win a header?
-
Another thought - first goal came from variation of a corner. Good run by Bree but looked straight off the training ground
-
Jedinak comes back and we concede 3 goals in six games
No coincidence.

Just home.
I have an important pronouncement.
That away strip is the most horrible I have ever seen.
Also Mile Jedinak sorting out the tartier members of our team was beautiful. He was positively neanderthal. Sweat streaked, cursing incoherently through his beard at his boots. Securely my favourite player.
Johnstone actually catching the ball.
Thanks to all in L2 for helping find that lad's wedding ring when it flew off his hand celebrating the first goal.

People round by me were getting very het up about their keeper's kit potentially clashing with that of the outfield players.

Highlights for those that can't see the Sky link:
-
Anyone still regretting we missed out on Rhodes? No, thought not.
-
Anyone still regretting we missed out on Rhodes? No, thought not.
That Sheffield Wednesday supporter in the 'Rhodes' replica shirt they had playing up front for them today was terrible.
-
Decided to go today.First time in ages.Taylor and Chester impressed and Kodja took his goals well.Despite the injuries there appears to be the makings of a team.
Having said that Bannon bossed the midfield for a good part of the first half and had they not gone down to ten men we would have had a much tougher game.

I can't remember the last time i felt comfortable at 1-0. There was always a chance they would get one but other than the disallowed goal, they didnt create a fat lot.
A good win and one I hope gives us confidence to go on not only this season but into next. Oh and yes, their kit was bloody horrible.
-
Is that 12 points from 15?
Bruce hang on a bit!

I didn't see any of the game, just the highlights, so good to hear that we were comfy. From the highlights it looked as though they had a few decent chances. We've been on the kind of run where opposition teams score all their chances and we miss mot of ours. Nice that it's evening out a bit.
Seems to me that our manager should be earning some plaudits for continuing to win amid mass injuries.
-
Topic of conversation around us was how amazing that Alan Hutton has gone from founder member of the bomb squad to Villa legend in two short years. Leandro is the next.
-
I thought Bruce managed the game well today which I couldn't say ar all during the bleak spell in January.
When Baker went off I assumed Elphick would come on but switching Jedinak back was the right decision as he commanded their forwards.
Not sure if Sasso deserved a red as I haven't seen it back yet, but we'd done pretty well before that and the defence kept them at arm's length for most of the game.
They didn't need to change kit but at least the garish combination was more original than the awful bland black kits that most teams turn up with.

That second goal was quality, we use to score goals like that in my youth !!
-
I thought Mile Jedinak was the best centre half we have had this season.
-
Absolutely.
-
Good win.
Shame team is about 10 points short of where we should be. If we were on 58 points I'd massively fancy us to make the play offs.
All points lost right at the start of the season and in the awful January-Feb period.
That's why despite our issues this season I really don't think we're far away. We will be up there next season.

Thought Johnstone was excellent today, think it's time to put aside his first few games & the fact he is someone else's player because I suspect he will have another years loan here ahead....key is to get a back up better than Bunn who can be used in case he has another iffy spell. Contrast him to Westwood who is 'rated' at other end who looked vastly inferior to Johnstone today.
For me midfield closed down well & let Bannan have the ball in largely unthreatening areas. Missed Lansbury's range of passing so was a midfield of work rate rather than creation.
Defensively pretty secure, Taylor as a defender is a huge upgrade on Amavi, who in turn is starting to get to grips with the advanced role.
Jedinak can't pass water but boy is he the most important player in the team, was good in midfield, was excellent at centre back.
Bree & Hutton good down right side.
Kodjia & Adamoh considering there were goals and assists in them still don't work hard enough closing down opponents for me, we aren't good enough for passengers and must learn to defend from front & similarly must learn to hold up ball better.
Still pedestrian with the ball but we have a team working better as a team.

Beat me to it. What self respecting Villa fan would drink it, especially when Thunderbird is still on the shelves.

Do have a slight worry that we'll end the season well and then a top flight team will nab Kodija off us. Mind you, hopefully Hogan will be firing by then.

I'm still not sold on Johnstone to be honest. Thought he was decent in the air, but didn't really have many saves to make and his kicking was all over the place again.
I would hope we get better in the summer and have Steer as back up.
-
Sounds like a good win and seems the confidence is returning. Just what we needed. I've only seen the highlights posted on here, so difficult to judge the quality of the match from that. We couldn't have asked more than a comfortable win against a top 6 side and another clean sheet. Here's hoping the corner really has been turned. Decent turnout aswell 31k.
Hopefully it's onwards and upwards now. We've got the best form in the league points-wise over the last 5 games. Be nice to maximise what we can get from the last 9 matches.

I want us to be swigging Champagne and calling Ipswich, Liverpool, and Bayern fans wankers.

I've heard their managers comments and also read their forum and they bemoan missing chances. Did I miss something? Other than Rhodes sticking one a yard wide and Winnall making Johnstone make a save after Chester gave the ball away, I cannot recall anything else of note all game.
Wednesday looked like what I've thought they were everytime I've seen them; very average.
No pace up top, can see why Bruce didn't one Rhodes.
-
Enjoyed the game, a bit disjointed first half but looked much better shape wise when baker went off and i would have jedi starting at centre half
Had a bit of luck, they looked toothless and as for bannan bossing the midfield it means fuck all when you are on the halfway line
Onwards and upwards
-
Rhodes spent virtually the whole game in the pocket of a defensive midfielder playing as a makeshift centre half. He didn't make any clever runs or do anything to suggest he's anything more than a bog standard Championship player.
-
They looked the better team to start with but once we settled we always looked the most likely to score. Credit to the players and management to get the result despite so many injuries, I put it down to outfoxing them with our innovative 4 full back system.
-
Jedinak very good at centre half. Won a lot in the air when they went fairly direct.
Although disappointing to see us not press the advantage when a man up with Fletcher coming on for them can see why Elphick came on to keep things tight.
-
No pace up top, can see why Bruce didn't one Rhodes.
If he didn't want to sign him, putting a transfer bid in for him is a funny way to show it!

The type of performance I expected more of when we bought Bruce in, defensively solid, hardworking, dull.
We looked pretty comfortable all the way through and whilst Weds were neat and tidy they were always playing that pretty stuff in front of a solid, disciplined set up.
I questioned the Baker substitution thinking why have two CBs on the bench and not use them, but it worked well and Hutton was again terrific.
Think we missed Lansbury, GG was very ponderous and lacked attacking ambition, very unimpressed by Amarvi. Lots of 7/10 performances.
Progress.
-
If we'd have wanted him, we'd have got him.

Undoubtedly on both counts. But it's wrong to say Bruce didn't want him.
He didn't want to spend £12m on him. He was more than happy to spend north of £6m on him.
-
I have to say that watching a few highlights and fan;s views has confirmed something that I've thought for a while. We really do have the ugliest fans in the world.

Outside of honest graft, it's difficult to see why Weds and Huddersfield are so high up the table, it's also bloody annoying.

What happened to Forresteri yesterday, he generally makes Wednesday tick and scored the winner in August although they have spent a lot on their squad. Massive failure for them if they miss out on the play offs.

I think Hogan will be much better for us than McCormack but he just strikes me as a finisher from what I saw in the Barnsley game and we're not great at creating huge amount of chances yet.
I prefer forwards who can create chances for themselves and Kodjia is great at that so I'd continue with him upfront on his own.

he does create for himself and isn't just a finisher. He also runs the channels well and offers a lot more variety than Kodjia does. I think Hogan will develop into a fine striker and one that will score goals in the top flight - hopefully it's with us.

That's not my point. I think Hogan will develop to be a better striker than Kodjia, so if we were to lose one out of the two of them, and no-one is saying that we will, I'd prefer to keep Hogan.

Think you're right about Hogan. 14 goals in 25 games for Brentford this season before he came to us. Just need to find how to play to his strengths.
-
If we'd have wanted him, we'd have got him.
He was massively unimpressive.
Put it this way. Boro can't score any goals but still thought Rudy Gestede was a better bet at Premier League level. Hogan looks a much better prospect.
I agree about Hogan. I'd be more disappointed to lose him than Kodjia.
Kodjia has certainly settled a bit more in the lone striker role over the last few weeks. He does look better when paired with another striker though.
-
I've always thought there was a good player in Amavi somewhere but I must confess i'm now beginning to wonder if he is just a championship player...Just an average one.
-
Good win and starting to see some stability. Sometimes injuries push you in a way you would not go by choice. You sometimes stumble on an effective team.
We need to push on now and not settle for mid table. Start picking off the teams one by one above us and we could have a strong team by the end of the season.

£25 begins to sound tempting.

I guess it's early days & he didn't come into a team that was anything like settled, but Hogan looks bang average to me. I hope he proves me wrong.
-
Outside of honest graft, it's difficult to see why Weds and Huddersfield are so high up the table, it's also bloody annoying.
Organisation, teamwork, tactics, strategy and bondage up moors in pre season are just a few elements beyond the scope of the term honest graft so it really isn't that difficult to understand.
-
I think Kodjia is more saleable than Hogan. Flashier and more high profile, not necessarily better.
-
I don't want us to sell either of them, but Kodija yesterday was a constant menace, regardless of the goals he scored. Ask any Championship defender who they would hate playing against, surely it has to be JK.
-

Yes that's true. There is lot of stuff I don't like about Kodjia but he is doing what's required. Not sure how Hogan fits in the team with Kodjia but if Bruce can figure that out and we can get around 20 goals each from both there is no stopping is next season.
-
Can any of you who were at the game tell me what sort of size was the Wednesday defender that was supposed to be marking Kodjia for his first goal? The reason I ask is, Kodjia seemed to be head and shoulders above him to win that header with what seemed like consummate ease and, if the defender was six foot plus then it makes the goal even better.
-
I have to say that watching a few highlights and fan;s views has confirmed something that I've thought for a while. We really do have the ugliest fans in the world.

Well yes, all the things we should have as a matter of course, then on top of that the big money talent should come into its own. That we haven't had all the things you detailed, when we have the biggest wage bill in th league, is annoying.

Does he?
From what I saw v Brentford him and Hogan were getting in each others way....was it much better v Ipswich?
I suppose they need time to get an understanding, pre season should sort it.
-
Any lone striker has to be able to lay the ball off swiftly and alway be in the box for chances, JK seems great at both but doesn't seem to want to do it.
He's by far our best forward but a complete enigma, I'm not as worried about losing him at the end of the season as I should be, I don't think a prem team would fancy him.

A few points from yesterday.
I thought Wednesday were the better team until Baker went off. Bruce made a very good tactical decision to go 4-4-2 to match them in midfield and avoid bringing on Elphick. From that point on we were very comfortable and it had the feel of a routine day at the office. Something we haven't witnessed for 5 years.
Kodija delights and frustrates in equal measure. The only player we have who can score goals, but equally makes some bad/odd decisions.
I actually thought Rhodes looked OK and could see why Bruce might have wanted him to lead the line. Will be interesting to see what Hogan has to offer in comparison and how he fits alongside Kodija.
The positive thing is, we can start to see the wood for the trees in terms of the players who will be key next season - and those who need replacing.

Wednesday defenders were normal 6 footers. Watching from Witton End high up it was a Bentekesque leap he seem to jump about 2 feet above everyone else. I am very pleased about his two headed goals recently especially after I had a word with him about his ability in that department before he went to Afcon.
-
Two cracking assists yesterday, another one for the much aligned Adamoah!

I think the alignment of Adomah is justified.

Cheers Aftab, you're a good 'un.

I'd have been disapppinted if that was our defender

I think kodjia has generally looked best with a more physical striker
Him and hogan could work - e.g. Both running the channels. But it's not the most obvious partnership for me
Still would really like to see us try a diamond. Hourihane and Lansbury look tailor made for those shuttle positions on either side of Jedinak; and I reckon that's where we'd see the best of grealish too. In a number 10 position behind two strikers
-
I think overall Adomah has been ok. He has his limitations and needs to add goals to his game but I think he's done alright.
-

Haha

Jedinak comes back and we concede 3 goals in six games
No coincidence.
Jedinak comes back and we win four out of six no coincidence 🙂

No he was immense again yesterday
-
Its weird how a player as average (with passes and especially headers that can go anywhere) as Jedi is so vital to Villa

9 assists this season - second only to Hourihane with 13 now, in the whole league according to The Times.
-
I don't care about stats - his overall contribution to the team is very poor
-

His overall contribution is to set up a lot of goals.
-
I would have thought having the second highest number of assists in the division, when he is playing in the team with the second lowest number of goals means that his overall contribution is pretty significant, if not crucial!
-
I don't care about stats - his overall contribution to the team is very poor
It's not just pointless stats though is it, it's 9 times he's directly contributed towards a goal.
-
8 and a miss-kick;-)
-
I think he set up both Hutton and Hourihane's chances on Saturday as well.
-
Adomah & Kodjia can enhance this team further if they work harder on closing down opposition defenders more, for me it seems Chester & Baker get pressure put on them a lot more than our forwards put on opponents
-
The thing is, every club will have fans who scrutinise their players and see all the imperfect/bad things they do. But if the stats read impressively - he's a winger and he's near top of the assists league, rival fans/neutrals will assume that he's one of the best players in the league. The truth is probably in between - he could be a lot better, but for our current level, he's more than adequate most of the time.
-
In a season when we rarely score and when we have it's been generally Kodjia assisted by Adomah the pair have had an awful lot of criticism!
-
the "problem" I have with Kodjia and Adomah is that I suspect they're potentiall a lot better than we've seen. Watching Kodjia there's absolutely no reason he shouldn't be aiming for 25-30 goals and 10+ assists in a season and for Adomah he should be creating 2-3 good chances every game because he's a good crosser and he sees a pass very quickly. Both of them are a little bit let down by their belief that they need to do it on their own which causes them to take on more than they should.
