Title: Aston Villa vs Preston North End Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Chipsticks on January 17, 2017, 04:01:41 PM
A chance to redeem the reverse of this fixture, as well as the shite we've seen in the last 3 games.

I expect us to win, and we very much need to. Preston sit four points above us in 9th, so we must close this gap along with the 10 point gap to the play-offs.

I'm saying a narrow 1-0, though I have as little clue as anyone else about where the goals are going to come from.

Who would you play up front?

Their tails are up after beating Brighton last week, Simon ''Larry'' Grayson had the measure of us in Di Matteo's last stand and we're not playing any better now than we were then.
Our home record and a bit of psychological steel that goes with that is the main thing we have going for us right now.

Another low-scoring draw or a narrow defeat. Robinson and Johnson probably to have the games of their lives too. Villa's Law - whatever can be miserable, will be.

Play Adomah green and rhm up front and hit them with pace
Gardner tish and grealish in midfield
Bacuna amavi baker (if fit) Chester
Sam the man in goal
Think it's got to the time where Jedi needs a break out of the team need a win so badly and I think we will

Interesting front 3, I'm just not sure Bruce would opt for this. I can definitely see him giving a first start to a young striker though.

I'd like to see Grealish playing behind McCormack and RHM. We've had far too little going forward in our previous games.

2-1 to Preston.

Westwood to return to a frenzy of negativity. Agbonlahor to start and do nothing again, to an even bigger frenzy. Bruce to make a substitute in the 89th minute.

Preston to win 2-1, but more comfortably than the scoreline suggests. We are crap.

Aston Villa v Preston North End - is that not the greatest sounding fixture in football? Sends a tingle down the spine.

And no, I wasn't around when the two clubs were the best in the land, I'm just an old romantic.

0-0, we'll never beat The Invincibles.

I want green to start

I'd like RHM in there too but he's injured and not signing a contract so that seems unlikely

It's either gabby or McCormack upfront then. I can't decide which is worse. McCormack could still come good for us but it won't be leading the line. Gabby won't come good

Robinson and Johnson playing well for them, typically! A narrow 2-1 to Villa. Their tails will be up after beating Brighton. I've noticed that our next match against Bristol City is to be postponed as City are involved in the FA Cup that weekend - not ideal for us.

Adomah Jedinak Tshibola Green

My mind has just raced back to the first game of the 1973-74 season and arriving back from a week's family holiday in Weymouth and arriving back in Birmingham around 3.30pm and my mum and dad dropping me off outside VP - so I could maintain my attendance record !  (as a 16 year old - nothing was more important.)

I remember we played them away around January of that season.

Have we played Preston since then - I'm struggling to think of a game between us ?

Zero shots on target last game, two misfiring strikers one of whom is a complete waste of space and a non existent midfield.

3-0 Villa.

Would it be crazy to omit our striking options and go with what Conte did over the weekend?

Have Grealish tow the line and stay central, with Green playing off him? I think it would allow us to have some strength (for as much as we have) with Jedinak, Tshibola and Gary in the middle, with maybe Bacuna involved. We need more skill up front. Ross and Gabby just look awful.

I really hope Callum doesn't put us to the sword.

I see nearly 50% are still predicting a win for us. When I was in my playing days, I seem to recall you actually had to score at least one goal to win a game. Mind you age plays tricks on you!!!! Or, maybe, we've signed 4 stonking players that I haven't heard about yet.

Had a chuckle at the opening few posts on this thread...my first thought on this game was that it would be 0-0, we don't exactly suggest we're going to create many chances with what we're likely to put out on Saturday.

PNE were really good against us in October and that game kick started their season as they've had plenty of good results since, they are legitimate contenders for top 6.

Pretty sure Pearson is suspended which is good news for us as he ran the midfield up there.

I found it a bit jarring to see the team we had out that day, compared to what we have now. Barry, Angel, Vassell, Hitzelsperger, De La Cruz, Dublin, and Sir Graham on the touchline. I'd give my arms for some of that now.

Yet how many of them did we think were 'nowhere near good enough' for Aston Villa at the time. This iwas the 'pig of a season' that had Graham Taylor booed at the end of it.

That was a PNE side that was consistently close to promotion and their fans used to moan like hell about them too, they've been to League One and back since then. One of the things Mr Amfy's always says is to try and appreciate the team you've got, because you never know when you might be looking back on that as good times, and this clip seems to be a really good example of that for us!

Cheers Amfy, I hope you're well!

And God forbid we ever fall far enough to consider this as the good times! But I take your point. I guess it's in our nature as football fans to always want a little more. I know some friends of mine disagree but I think our club's name carries a weight of expectation too, especially for those of us around 30/40 years of age. Maybe that contributes to that restlessness some of us have as supporters.

3-0 Villa.

They're without their key man in midfield. They're very workman like, but we're good at the back and with a touch more attacking quality now in central midfield I fancy to open them.up.

Bruce has to try something new today. Playing Gabby just means we play with ten men.

Gamble on RHM. Stick him up top with McCormack behind.

I think RHM is injured but yes, I'd try something a little different today as well. I reckon he'll give Andre Green a start, he has hinted at  it.

Ahh, bugger. I thought I'd seen RHM say something on Twitter about the fact he couldn't wait to play again.

Yep, even so, he needs to mix it up.

The choice between gabby and McCormack to lead the line is a poor one t say the least

I'd reluctantly plump (!) for McCormack but tell green, Lansbury and adomah that they've got to run in behind

Whoever has looked least shit in training gets the third midfield slot

I'd go with Tish, Lansbury and Grealish in midfield with Adomah and Green wide right and left and RMC up top despite his poor headed miss last week. With Hourihane likely to come it's time for Grealish to start exerting more influence on games for the full 90mins otherwise he will start to fall down the pecking order. Come on Villa 3 points please!

Johnstone, Amavi, Chester, Elphick and Hutton at the back.

Jedinak and Tshibola sitting. The Green, Lansbury and Adomah around McCormack.

Reckon it'll be a Villa win, but only through a bit of luck, rather than any skill.
A rather uneventful 1-0.

We really need to win this one to close the gap on the top six so I'm going for a 2-1 win to us.
Very brave Darren Woolley very brave.

Westwood as usual survives the purge. He must be magnificent in training. Is Ross injured or off?

He must have intimate  photographs of someone high up at Villa or something. Whatever it is the mind boggles how he still gets a game.

I was quite looking forward to today.

Saw Westwood and Agbonlahor in the team. Won't be following it now. Can't and won't support either of them.

Bruce must have a deathwish....If we don't start winning soon, he is going to bear the brunt of a massive backlash.

Hope we win.

Oh behave. I can't stand Westwood but he's still in the Villa team so you at least get behind him during the game. Do your slagging off at the end or on here, but don't let it stop you supporting the team because if so, what's the point of being a fan?

He won't do anything constructive so why support him? I won't get behind him. I don't want him in the team.

There's plenty of point in being a fan. It's impossible to stop being a fan.

I get your point, and you're right. But seeing these same old names just irritates the fuck out of me. Richards?? Still in the squad? After all his rubbish?.

Not surprised that Gabby starts.

Bruce stated in December that while Kodjia and Ayew was away he would give Gabby all the chances he could ask for.
Hes done exactly that...and with that stubborn streak he keeps doing it against all reason.

Westwood is more of an enigma. Bruce never offered any thougths that would explain how he could get close starting again, especially now when another midfielder option is available. Reason dictates that Westwood would be at best 4-5th option now for that position. Westwood isn't moved by laws of logic it seems.

As John e said a while back, forget this jizz about Bruce wanting to box clever and put Gabby in the shop window (the obvious flaw there being the whole world can see how shit he is an'all) - he actually seems to rate him.  For some unfathomable reason.

Bruce is what he is, an old school manager.  Which is why when he was still at Hull and Allthepies was still at Sunderland, they looked the most likely to take Gabby, Richards or Lescott off our hands.

I thought that Bruce might flirt with the idea of introducing both Gabby and Richards to the fringes of the squad. An odd game here and there, perhaps, based on glories of yesteryear. Only to soon wise up and realise they are shot.

But this is beyond flirting. This is take 'em out to dinner (Gabby had seconds and thirds) bedroom gymnastics and in the family way before you know it.  An appalling state of affairs.

And he was defending him at the press conference yesterday although he finally conceded he isn't the player of 2008.  Steve he hasn't been that player well since 2008.
