At least having Kozak and Adomah on the bench gives RDM a few options up front if they're needed.

Looks like a 4-3-2-1 formation. Thinking Ayew and Jack playing behind Kodjia.

At least there's not four strikers playing though McCormack being injured probably explains that rather than a y tactical nuance.

Hard to believe we're into 'because there's nobody else' territory in some positions.

3-5-2 don't mind that if it is. Ayew and Kodija playing where they should..more solid through the middle, a bit of width with Bacuna & Amavi with Jack play making in the middle. That looks a more natural side to me with players playing in their actual positions.
Have we actually sold Traore or just renamed him Tsihbola? :-)

With Grealish in a midfield three? Well it's narrow but it could work.

Definitely looks 352

Always alarmed when you switch formation with little prep - how many days of training have we spent on that? Just since Brentford? It took sir Brian months before he could get us playing 352 properly

Should in theory give us more control though

But not the team id have picked

Disappointing no Tshibola even on the bench

Could if be a 3-4-3?

Where is Tshibola with this knock from weeks ago..?
Title: Re: Ipswich v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on September 17, 2016, 02:19:06 PM
No more narrow than we have been all season. In fact I think all 11 I would say are in their right positions for the first time this season.

Worried about Tshibola. Talented but never fucking fit. Desperately short in the centre of midfield.

I think it's now safe to assume Westwood is undroppable.

With Grealish in a midfield three? Well it's narrow but it could work.

The last time I held such an opinion, Timmy had just begun his descent into madness and had picked Sanchez as our midfield one.

It didn't go well.

Title: Re: Ipswich v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Richard on September 17, 2016, 02:27:16 PM
I quite like this formation as long as Bacuna and Amavi push on lots. Grealish behind those 2 strikers is also a good move.
Title: Re: Ipswich v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Hookeysmith on September 17, 2016, 02:28:13 PM
Tishbola is fit. Told from horses mouth.
352 can work and I think suits bacuna  better than flat RB.  Amavi was total gash when he came on in lm so hopefully this suits him.
Kozak  chosen over Rudy?
Let's hope it's the start of something positive or it will be the death knell for RDM

RDM said in his press conference that Ipswich put a lot of crosses into the box which probably explains the thinking behind Baker. Doesn't look desperate to me, lets see how it goes.

Looks like 3-5-2 which is fine by me - Bacuna and Amavi getting forward but able to drop back and provide more solidity in the middle and give a bit more protection to the defence. If Tishbola was in instead of Westwood I'd be a lot happier. In fact if anyone was in instead of Westwood I'd be a lot happier. Not many options to change it from the bench but maybe Adomah will come on later when Ipswich start to tire.

I reckon on a 3-5-2.
Both Bacuna and Amavi are good crossers of the ball and won't be under as much pressure to get back, they might even excel!
There also seems quite a bit of flexibility in that squad.
With Hutton and Cissokho on the bench it will be easy to change the formation completely.

In the Brentford match thread somebody linked to a site that always has radio streams for games with instructions to bookmark it. As that game was on 5Live I didn't bother, convinced I'd never need it. Instead I spent my time scrubbing out the meaning of the word Hubris from the dictionary.

Not great. Not horrific either.

Ayes looks less dangerous not coming in from the wing. Amavi and Bacuna could do with trying to go past their full back once in a while.

Westwood has done ok I think; movement in front of him doesn't seem that good to be honest. Think we are missing McCormack as the link dropping into the space between their defence and midfield.

Agreed, whenever there is a clamour to play Ayew down the middle he tends to disappoint. He has been anonymous.

Would be shifting him to the right wing for the second half. Richards and Bacuna behind him so he could pretty much just stay up there. Ipswich are playing a very high line.

We were shocking for about 15 mins in the middle of that half but Amavi/Grealish are combining well and Kodija looks dangerous. Midfield duo a real problem and all the shifting around at the back has caused more problems than the Ipswich forwards.

Ipswich are dogged but very lacking in quality. Grealish is key for us second half. Kind of game where Gestede would be a very handy option, guess we will see Adamoah on at some stage.

I had assumed that by now, after a takeover and a summer transfer window, we'd have a manager who knew how he wanted his team to play and had recruited the players to fit his system, rather than simply buying a load of names and desperately casting around for some way to shoehorn the decent ones into the side and avoid playing the shite ones too often.

It seems I was being uncharacteristically optimistic.

Well it is and it isn't. We went down with one of the worst PL teams ever. The other relegated teams are better than us because we had to do a total rebuild. That said the manager has done nothing of note so far and if he ends up getting the sack very soon I wouldn't have much sympathy for him.

The ref just gave 2 less obvious free kicks than the shove on Grealish. Twat.

He's doing his best to play his part in the Villa-concede-late-on narrative.

Oh another free kick to them.

Ref will give a pen here at any opportunity.

At least we are battling for a point rather that folding. Terrible performance, selection and formation though. Have they moved off the bench or doing a collective Sherwood and Wilkins impression and just staring?

It occurs to me we are trying to draw our way to 40 points. Can someone let the club know we are no longer in the PL.

He should be doing much, much better with what he has. The fact that we have gone from having such a high shot total to precisely the opposite is a complete miracle and even then we nearly threw it all away in the end.

Barely followed the match but no shots on target according to the stats is a disgrace considering how much we've spent in forward areas.

with no sign of improvement and a team randomly set up in a different (unsuccessful) formation every match..

What's all this about different formation every match?

Wasn't today the first time we've varied it? I'd rather we went back to the 4231 or a 433 though

The league table makes terrible reading. No one was up to scratch today. Looked they've already reverted back to last seasons mindset. It's going to be a long season and I don't know if RDM will be around for all of it. Terrible management thus far.
And finally...Ashley Westwood - please f**k off.

We don't look anything more than plodders . nobody looks outstanding at all.

And this after a huge amount of money was spunked by Dr Tony to give Di Matteo the tools for the job. He (RDM) really isn't proving to be any better than the clowns who've failed with far less in the way of resources at their disposal. Pathetic scenes.
