I think they are a team who will finish nearer the bottom of the table than the top and I think we may enjoy playing away from home this season as there is less pressure. 1987-1988 all over again perhaps. I am optimistic of a win. I will go 1-2.

I had a very enjoyable lads weekend in Bristol in the late nineties. As for going to Bristol for a football match the only time I went I didn't even go to Bristol. It was to Bath for that cup tie against Bristol Rovers when Big Ron and Big Mal did some 'trash talking' before the tie as I recall. Was it 1-1 at Villa Park and 1-2 or 1-3 to us in the replay? I seem to recall Dean Saunders and Ray Houghton scoring but my memories of it are a bit vague.

Bristol is great (especially for live music). The only problem I have is being taxed £6-60 to drive home over the Bridge

I also have to check this site before any trip https://www.severnbridge.co.uk/Home.aspx?.Parent=using-the-tolls2&FileName=maintenance-closures8

The Sunday of a Bank Holiday weekend. Nah, no one's gonna want to use the bridge that day, so let's close it for maintenance

Mauratinas nightclub Bristol. Circa 1997. After splitting up with my fiancé I went to Bristol with a mate of mine. We met two lovely friendly young ladies. I was in my mid to late twenties and he was a few years younger. He found it highly amusing that he ended up with the niece and I ended up with 'Auntie Tracey'. I wasn't complaining. 'Auntie Tracey' was very attractive.

I fear we might find Bristol City a tougher game than the posters so far expect.

I'd be satisfied with a draw, so it's a bonus if we get three points.

Again difficult to call. Really need to perform over 90 minutes and take chances.

Until we do that - a draw is probably the realistic outcome.

I'm still scarred enough from the last few years that despite the green shoots of recovery so far I still cannot feel confident in Villa not losing any game of football.

Hopefully by the end of the season I'll be more confident, and the inherent mental weakness of the club that has seemingly seeped into the physical bricks and mortar is completely vanquished.

I agree. Though we could feasibly have kozak up front, or gestede, or a new signing. That's going to make a massive difference to our chances

I'd still play ayew up front if needed. Bacuna could play right  midfield with de laet right back

The first away win will be crucial. Get it, and you get the feeling we'll really crack on. Again, I fear this will game be too soon for our signings to gel. Either a draw, or a loss due to another lapse of concentration towards the end.

With the two most recent signings, I feel a little more confident going in than say Rotherham.

Really hope we just go out and fucking stuff Bristol City, I know it's not that simple with a new team gelling but those shots off the woodwork all finally going in, isn't it about time we had one of those days where it clicks?

This sort of tricky away fixture could define our season.  I expect us to pick up a lot of home wins, but whether we can grind out results in games such as this could prove the difference between us getting promotion or not.

Wouldn't go as far as to say its must win at this stage.  But I do think a win would put us in a fairly healthy position at this stage.  I expect a pretty tidy football match but perhaps not a lot in the way of goal mouth action, and a some nervious defending from ourselves as we bed the new signings in.  1-1 Ayew to get off the mark for the season.

I like the diamond option for many of our players though I don't think that midfield three works too well. Westwood wouldn't be comfortable on the left of the three.

Either way, I can't see any sign we'll ditch the current formation. On the same assumption above, I'd go:

Gollini - de Laet elphick Chester cissokho - bacuna Westwood Jedinak grealish - McCormack - ayew

Subs: bunn baker Richards Gardner Green kozak RHM

25 miles away, so its as local a match as I'm going to get (apart from when Villa play Brizzle Rovers in the odd cup or pre-season)

Are Gestede and Tshibola definitely out? Presume so and our bench looks very weak as a result.

Bacuna has been fine at RB so far but looks like he will have to play in midfield given lack of options, Green doesn't look ready yet either. I'd expect Cissokho to hold his position but with Jedinak in really think we need to get Amavi and Grealish going down the left. I'd be on for giving Gabby one last shot in this game but can't see it happening.

Gollini, De Laet, Elphick, Chester, Amavi, Bacuna, Jedinak, Westwood, Grealish, Mccormack, Ayew

Subs Bunn, Baker, Hutton, Gardner, Green, RHM, Cissokho, Lyden

RDM says gestede and Tshibola definitely out. I agree w the team above on that basis, tho I'd play cissokho and kozak probably gets a place on the bench

Whether ayew can do the no 9 thing and link w McCormack is key. Hope they've been focusing on this in training. Surely he can't play kozak from the start

My confidence in a win is quite diminished given our lack of options in attach. If RHM was banging them in for the youth team he'd maybe have a claim, but I can't see that.

Our set pieces have been much improved of late. Could really do with elphick getting on the end of one of those McCormack crosses.

We just need to take advantage of our chances. We are not losing either match if we score a couple of the chances in the last couple of games. The defence is looking a lot more solid than before. Most sides in the division won't be able to come back against us to win if we score first. This isn't the PL, and the talent across the division is a lot more watered down.

As much as I wanted Kozak to prove he could do a job for us after watching him look totally lost last game he either will take months to get up to speed or he will never be of any use. If he starts on next game I really can't see us winning.

Ayew will play up front I think, Bacuna pushes up to wing and De Last at right back. Draw at the very least. 1-1.

It has to be this id have thought. Green off the bench at some stage. Big premium on ayew there. But I'd like to think he can do it

I was thinking one centre forward in and we're done. But he might want a winger in too in order to have two players for every position:

Ayew McCormack grealish plus bacuna green NEW SIGNING

Gestede and NEW STRIKER

I suspect we will go with:

Gollini

Cissokho, Chester, Elphick, De Laet

Grealish, Jedinak, Westwood, Bacuna

Ayew & McCormack

Cissokho has never massively impressed me but he has looked good so far this season in my opinion.

Agree with it being bacuna pushing up, with Jedinak in the middle ahead of Gardner and Ayew up front, but 2-0 Villa for me

Gollini

Cissokho, Chester, Elphick, De Laet

Grealish, Jedinak, Westwood, Bacuna

Ayew & McCormack
I think that is the most likely selection with Amavi coming on late.

bugger me how many chances are we meant to give players who are blatently not good enough?

He's obviously a decent finisher who's clever at being in the right place at the right time I wonder if he'll ever properly recover from those injuries.

I don't think Kozak has recovered fully but I suspect it is a mental thing.  His break was a very bad one but then to have to have it surgically rebroken and reset must have taken a toll on him.  He plays like his heart is not in the game.  Not good to see in a player.

Kozak looked plenty good enough before the injuries.

Personally though I'd bring Green in and play either McCormack or Ayew upfront.

Think it has to be ayew. Don't think McCormack can play no 9

But I'd play bacuna midfield, especially away from home. Grealish and green either side of a four man midfield is too exposed for me at the moment

Maybe once Jedinak and Tshibola get their feet under the table properly they can provide enough cover

I think he can play upfront and certainly has goals in him, but not as a traditional number 9.

I'd keep the 4231 formation and bring Grealish central if we push McCormack further forward.

We've dominated the last two games for long periods but only got 2 points to show for it, time to get points on the board now.

Bristol's a great city...was there in the week. Probably my favourite one in the South.

Can see this being a draw again. I'm not too concerned as the championship is still congested and Newcastle playing Brighton today so points will be dropped from at least one of them.

Bristol will test our defence today....they have Kodjia who a lot wanted...Lee Tomlin who was a very good player for boro at this level and also Tammy Abraham who's scored a couple already. Big strong forward on loan from Chelsea.

A clean sheet today would be a very good sign for the season ahead from the back 4. I think Bristol City are a decent outside tip for the play offs. They score a lot of late goals aswell and pushed Newcastle last week.

Would be a real boost going into the break wouldn't it. No Tish or Gestede today, but good to see Jedinak is available.

Yes, that's very Black-esque.

Kozak and Agbonlahor should be kept well away. I'd play Hepburn Murphy.

I want to see Gestede as the bench option. I like him coming on causing a whole bunch of panic, but when we're trying to build our game in the first half he just looks like a big tree getting in the way.

It's the line up almost everyone expected. Not sure there was a credible alternative really.

Wonder exactly how ayew and McCormack will line up. I'd imagine 9 and 10 respectively?
