Guzan

Clark
Crespo

Rubbish midfield, barely championship quality. In fact it looks like a Championship side.

That's got surrender all over it.

Looks like a pretty nuts-and-bolts 4-4-2 that. Probably not going to be an entertaining match, then.

Solid line up....we're too easy and weak with Gil, Grealish and Ayew all playing in the same team.

Always hope to be proven wrong, but do we ever pick a decent team anymore?

The strikers-garbage.

Westwood-garbage

Hutton-garbage

Etc etc etc.

Is Sherwood still in charge FFS? What a miserable side that is. All the creativity and winning intent left on the bench. Fucking useless.

There's nothing solid about that midfield anyway, incredibly small, lightweight and dull.

The lack of any flair is bad. Adama and Gueye not in the squad. Or Kozak. It smacks of a manager that got done 6 zip in his last outing as caretaker and does not want a repeat. Amavi and Richardson down the left might work very well though.

Why is Crespo in over Okore as well, the guy needs minutes.

I assume as they are only just back from injury he doesn't want to risk both.

I think it's a team that has one big eye on Monday as I'd expect most of the bench plus Richards Gana and a couple of that starting team to play v Spurs

The only positive is the return of Amavi. What was the risk in playing a side to win tonight? If we lose we lose but at least we would have tried to win.
Title: Re: Southampton vs Aston Villa match thread
Post by: cdbearsfan on October 28, 2015, 06:56:35 PM
Can understand giving Gana and Grealish a rest, and pleased to see Clark in for Lescott.

However, annoyed about the lack of creativity. If we are experimenting a bit, why not give Traore a go? And why is it whenever Ayew plays well he gets dropped rather than being allowed to develop a run of form?

When you see all those articles saying "Sherwood's not the problem, all of the mediocre players - that's the problem".

If the only evidence that they have to go on are teams like tonight's, you probably have to cut them a bit of slack for thinking that we're dull and rubbish.

Title: Re: Southampton vs Aston Villa match thread

Pretty damning that every single player on the bench would improve us if they were put in the starting line up.

A good (foreign) manager and we'll easily stay up. Gil, Traore, Grealish, Ayew, Veretout are too good to sit on the bench over Kieran fucking Richardson.

I know we may be 'throwing' this game due to League survival being a priority, but Christ, it makes my blood boil to see us play literally our worst eleven even now the shackles are off.

This would have been the perfect time to play Grealish, Gil, Traore behind the striker. If we're gonna lose, at least lose 5-4 and give the attacking players some confidence.

strange selection, though we do appear to have some width tonight to supply Gestede and protection for the full backs.

Hate when we play two up top, would be far better off with a player off one forward

I'm not up on Southampton, how strong is this for them?  Koeman was talking about rotating as well.  I imagine this will be a poor match.

I'd play this team.
Richards is no centre back, Lescott isn't a top flight defender any longer (should have got him 10 years ago), christ knows where sinclair is (Not injured is he?), and Kozak definitely deserves a shot.

                          Bunn
Richards---Okore---Clarke---Amavi
Sinclair---Sanchez---Gardner---Grealish
                            Gil
                          Kozak

Kind of agree, but he's shone in what has been a very poor defensive unit. Personally, I don't think we need to play him at centre back - We have decent enough cover in that position in Clarke and Okore. Surely we'd look much stronger with him at right back than either Hutton or Bacuna, and Okore and Clarke in the middle?

Is today national 'Play All Your Full Backs' day? I count five of them. Let's hope they prove me wrong but I wouldn't back that team to score in 90 games, let alone 90 minutes.

I think K-Mac is probably trying to create width to serve Gestede but it's still a depressing team. Gil and Veretout should have been ripe for a run.

The team selected would struggle in the Championship
We'll find out quite soon

Why do we have a game in the Championship soon?
About 10 months time

And you wonder why people have a pop at you.
For being a realist. No worse than some naive , happy clappy guy who thinks everything is wonderful . Have you noticed the state of the team, club, league table etcetc

We're not down though are we?

Based on teams in previous seasons, it's more than likely, which is his point, as you already know, but choose to ignore because of who it is.

I've got the game on some dodgy stream so it is being shown somewhere.  It looks like some lego men being drawn by an impressionist and the sound has just gone but I suppose it'll have to do.  Just saw Westwood put in one of his best ever corners, it was okay.

Pretty bog-standard 4-4-2, relying on crosses and so on, but it's not working badly so far - the players look relieved to actually have any plan at all.

My team would be

Bunn,
Ilori, Okore, Clark, Amavi
Sanchez, Gana
Veretout
Ayew, Kozak, Tratore

For tonight game. But I am not the manager/caretaker

It's been dull and largely uninspired, but we look quite solid at the back for a change, and as the game has gone on we've actually had the better of the play.

All things considered, this isn't bad. A set piece looks like our best bet. We can win this.

Organised. What a novelty. Keep it up, Villa.

Probably helps not having Dim-Wit-Tim at the sideline, coaching a mix of cricket and ladies synchronised swimming...

Is everyone else's commentary in French? It's a sign....

The commentary was, then the adverts are a mix of dutch, and well.... Schteve McLaren voice overs.

Mine's in English, I think I've taken a different route to the rest of you.  It's crashed since half time though, hopefully it'll be back in a minute.

the interchanging of hutton and bacuna and amavi and richardson is working ok. Should take off Gestede or Gabby for Grealish or Ayew to give it more of a spark. Soton are there for the taking but you can see them winning 1-0

I think Gabby is actually stretching them a bit. When we play it into space for him, their defenders are hurriedly booting it into touch.

Gestede might get us something from a set piece, but from open play he's been pretty anonymous. His movement is poor.

Tactically this is easily the best we've looked all season, everyone looks like they know their job.  There's a little bit of a lack of quality around the box but we've looked threatening at a few corners and Bacuna had a good chance (that he created himself) that he hit straight at the keeper.  Nothing spectacular but all the evidence you need that the squad is better than they were looking.

The starting XI seems disappointing, with  a championship midfield and the most talented players on the bench.
But with which formation are we playing?
4-4-2? 4-3-3? Others?
Title: Re: Southampton vs Aston Villa match thread
Post by: brontebilly on October 28, 2015, 08:40:34 PM
It's been dull and largely uninspired, but we look quite solid at the back for a change, and as the game has gone on we've actually had the better of the play.

All things considered, this isn't bad. A set piece looks like our best bet. We can win this.

Would agree with that, been very solid at centre half so far too.

Definitely will need changes in the second half - cant see Rico, Gabby or Sanchez lasting the 90 mins.

Hopefully the artisans we have on can keep it up until a couple of artists come on later to give it the coup de grace

It's the boggiest of bog-standard 4-4-2s, but the two central midfielders are sitting deep pretty much all the time so we're not getting overrun at least. Uninspiring, but quite solid - a bit like MON's tactics, to be honest.

Considering the players out there, that could have been far worse.

Hopefully that wasn't our good half.

The next time a manager finally gets us out of that good half / bad half thing, I reckon we should build a fucking statue of him.

If any manager gets us consistently moving off the ball and creating space, we should name the ground after him.

I don't think he is. I think he's been playing in a shit team, under a shit manager who started going on about him being a n°10 and putting too much responsibility on his shoulders, then giving him carthorses like Gabby and Gestede to link up with.

He can dribble while protecting the ball and beat a man almost at will. If he was playing for Arsenal or someone, he'd look amazing.
