I wonder if 10 was offered to Jack

I thought that Jordan the First would be 3 but with Aly out on loan, Bennett will probably hang around as a reserve left back (albeit I expect Rico to be second choice to Amavi)

I am surprised that Bennett is in that list and holds the No 3, no No 10 listed? had to look up Andre Green.

I count 25 players over the age of 21 in that lot, so presumably if we have somebody 'not yet arrived' in the number 10 shirt then one player from the list above will be missing out?

Edit: counting again then there are 26, so one of that lot won't be in our squad for the season.

Wasn't there talk of Steer going out on loan again?

I'd imagine they'll be a few more ins/outs before the end of the transfer window.

Yeah, at the very least I'd hope that a few youngsters go off on loan.

No #16.
Charlie still in there?!
Would Sellers and Calder be considered outside this list or do they need to be listed in order to get Premier game time?

All pretty much goes to prove that squad numbers don't mean anything nowadays.

16 is an ill omened number as well I see. I wish Sinclair had a different number, 9 for anyone other than a central striker really irritates me. I'll stop now before I get cross about all the other allocations I don't approve of.

We've retired the number 10 in memory of Andi Weimann.

As silly as it sounds I'm disappointed by the squad numbers - I want our CF wearing 9 and those likely to start wearing 1 to 11.

Bennett retaining no 3 ??  No RB at no 2  !!

I know it's only a shirt number, but I'm old (and grumpy) and I like things done a certain way!  At least Tonev hasn't been given a squad number!!

More like he nicked it as a trophy for fooling us for many years masquerading as a Premiership player!

I thought Amavi would be in the 3 shirt.. wonder what's up with #10, it's been cursed for a little while now.

He was but with no names on any of the shirts during pre season

To give it to Bennett though..? That kid probably won't see the pitch once this year. What a waste.

how much is down to the players requesting numbers? Maybe Amavi prefers the #23. I'm confused as to why Kozac was givem #27....hopefully he requested it?

Not sure why, but I'm not a fan of the squad numbers that have been assigned this year.

Might just be a continuity thing with Kozak.. All of his stuff already says 27.

27 is heap powerful medicine, very good for protection against broken bones. 3x3x3.

Glad to see Amavi and Crespo have numbers ending in 3 and Ayew and Gestede have numbers ending in 9.

Hopefully we no longer to see defenders wearing 17 or forwards wearing 12 etc.

I'm not too fussed about numbers but Bennett and Steer aren't good enough even as cover in my opinion. Gabby needs at least a half decent season to show he isn't finished at the top level as far as I am concerned. You can file Chris Herd under Lord Lucan and Shergar. I am waiting for a  documentary on one of the more obscure digital channels to find out whatever happened to him.

I rate Bennett above cissoko and luna so I think he's decent cover.

I can't help thinking that arguing over the best Villa left back is like arguing over the best Jive Bunny song.

I love the narrative about great past players who have worn certain numbers, the best being possibly the call-out of Gavin McCann in the No 8 shirt.

I love the narrative about great past players who have worn certain numbers, the best being possibly the call-out of Gavin McCann in the No 8 shirt.

There's some stiff competition for the least effective No 8 since squad numbers were introduced.

What a team this would have been:

1. Peter Enckelmann
2. Steve Watson
3. Jlloyd Samuel
4. Steve Sidwell
5. Alpay
6. Carl Tiler
7. Steven Ireland
8. Jermaine Jenas
9. Marlon Harewood
10. Charle N'Zogbia
11. Alan Thompson

Some from memory but some from here: http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Aston_Villa_Squad_Numbers.html

Extremely harsh to include Watson & Thompson in that team, in my opinion.

Extremely harsh to include Watson & Thompson in that team, in my opinion.
If you look at the list of names against squad numbers on the website Joe refers to, Watson is the outstanding candidate for the no.2 shirt and the only challenger to Thompson in the no 11 shirt is Collymore.
