Gil Merrick?
Gary Shaw?
Daniel Sturridge?
-
I can't look any further than Darius Vassell.
-
There's only one Ian Taylor!
-
It's a straight toss up between Isaiah Osbourne and Darren Byfield...
-
Hard to choose between Tony Daley,Mark Walters and Gary Shaw .If pressed i would go for Shaw
-
Currently probably Daniel Sturridge.
Mark Walters would get my vote for all time in my lifetme.
-
Robert Hopkins. Obviously.
-

Call me biased, but Shaw at his brief peak was on another planet to anyone else. Which other Brummie was a star at world level? Then again, if Walters had played for us three or four years earlier you could have said the same about him.

I'm with Dave on this one...
a nice video of some of his goals.

Alan Smith had a pretty good career.
-
Got to be Gary Shaw for me one of my favourite players.
-
As Dave says, Gary Shaw was on a different planet. One of the all time greats with Gordon Cowans.
Mark Walters was a fantastic player, probably one of the most skilful players we've had, unfortunately, he came into a team that was on a bit of a slide.
-
Gary Shaw is the one who comes to mind first (as far as players in living memory are concerned). I did think about Sid Cowans but wasn't he born in County Durham?
-
Gary Shaw.
-
Gary Shaw - both Juventus and Real Madrid wanted to sign him - true story
-
Gary Shaw. Close the thread !!
-
Gary Shaw for sure, brought up near me in Kinghurst and would have been world class but for that w**ker Bowyer
-
Would Billy Walker count? Born in Wednesbury.
-
Would Billy Walker count? Born in Wednesbury.
Maybe if the 'Greater Birmingham' idea had gone through!! If we are talking surrounding areas then Duncan Edwards would have to be up there.
-
I agree it's probably shaw, or Duncan Edwards potentially if you include the wider area
I've made this point before, but the area under performs hugely compared to most other conurbations: London, merseyside, Manchester and Tyneside. Pick any one of those and the list would make this one look really light.
-
It's a crying shame Gary Shaw's career was cut so short by injury. He'd have been a world star. Instead, his ability is barely remembered by anybody outside the Midlands.
-
Another one for Gary.
Why has no one mentioned mentioned Garry Pendrey? He must be a proper Brummie because he played for the team that carries the city's name.
-
It's not a very impressive list overall, really.
It's lucky we don't have an Athletic Bilbao-like policy!
-
Nice bloke Gary Pendrey, I met him once. Of course, one Swallow doesn't make a summer.
-
Mark Walters had so much natural ability. Should have achieved more and not done that silly dance in front of the Holte.
-
John Devey.
Now you can close the thread.
-
Modern players, Gary Shaw.
-
Didn't the noses have a few Brummies in the side like Frain, Clarkson, Hopkins and Gayle when they won the Leyland Daf trophy? How come people bang on about Celtic winning the European cup with a team full of Glaswegians but forget to mention Small Heath's legendary boys of '91?
-
I dont suppose too many of us saw Duncan Edwards play but wasnt he supposed to be a hybrid of Gerrard and Guillett.

Is the comparison with Gerrard that in his last season Duncan Edwards also failed to make it to the FA cup final?

You hear older players talk about Duncan Edwards and you can't help but come to the conclusion that he was probably the best English player ever and, arguably, a top 10 world player.

He would have been had he lived. A privilege denied him through no fault of his own.

He won Young European Footballer of the Year in 82...as my mate Stefano loves telling me as he received the award in his home town of Montecatini, Tuscany.
He was also Young Player of the Year in 81 I think.
-
The 1982 award was this
The Bravo Award is an annual award which is handed out by the Italian magazine Guerin Sportivo to the most outstanding young European footballer. The first winner of the award was Englishman Jimmy Case. Until 1992 only under-23 players participating in one of the three European club cups (UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup) were eligible. Since 1992 any under-21 player from any European League is eligible.
The winners are chosen for the autumn-spring season, not the calendar year.

From cleaning Lord Brian's boots to League Champion and European Cup winner. Not too bad a career then.

He used to clean Leighton Phillips's boots as an apprentice.
On the OS Phillips was interviewed and said
"Gary Shaw was an apprentice and was assigned to clean my boots but he was useless at it!
I used to tell him: "I'm a superstar, captain of Aston Villa and yet I have the worst boots of all the players going on the park." :)
-
Difficult to look anywhere else but Shaw for the Villa.
I know he played for the dark side but no one has mentioned Latchford, he definitely knew the net was.
-
Why do people think there aren't more modern competitors to Shaw? even if you just look at villa's best ever home grown a good number aren't from the area (little, cowans, barry, Cahill in more modern times).
-
I know he played for the dark side but no one has mentioned Latchford, he definitely knew the net was.
Depends which Latchford you're on about. Peter Latchford knew were the net was, he spent enough time picking the ball out of the back of it.

Craig Gardner .
The only Brummie to have played for his 3 boyhood clubs.
Proper Brummie Legend

There's some great players on that list. And Garry Birtles too.

Billy Walker is our highest ever scorer so must be a contender.

Wednesbury born and bred. Black Country . Nothing to do with Birmingham. Its John Devey for me. Born in Newtown Birmingham and died in Birmingham.

Gerry Hitchens?
according to the BBC Villa Story video, he was proper class! but also amazing to see on Wikipedia that he also played for Kiddie, Worcester City and Merthyr Tydfil
-
Tony Daley wasn't too shabby either.
-
No mention of Gabby Agbonlahor? Villa's highest ever Premier League goalscorer.
I've lit the blue touch paper and will now retire.
;)

Born in Staffordshire and moved to then played for Highley (of the Denso 39-0 fame).

It's a straight toss up between Isaiah Osbourne and Darren Byfield...
Darren Byfield has just retired
Last game for Solihull Moors last week and he scored
he still looks a cut above the players around him and at 41/42 (?) years old is fitter than most of our first team look now
-
By far and away Gary Shaw. If we're stretching into Greater Birmingham then Duncan Edwards would get a shout.

Wednesbury's got a Walsall postcode ay it?

Does Greater Birmingham exist?
Even if does then Dudley will never, ever, be part of it.

Why not? I've lived here for about a year now and I'd have thought it was exactly the sort of place that would form part of a Greater Birmingham, if it ever happened.

John Devey.

Aye, I remember our Jack very well. Captain of the Villa through 5 League championship wins, not to mention the FA Cups. I were only a lad, mind.
Bern aged 130 (and still going strong).

You've kind of pointed out why your opinion doesn't count as you've only lived there a year.

Bugger. You've ruined my latest attempt at annoying the Yam Yam contingent.
Still comes under the dreadfully-named West Midlands Combined Authority so it's effectively Greater Birmingham.

Charming. Why not answer the point rather than telling somebody their opinion doesn't count?
-
If it has a Birmingham postcode, it's in Birmingham.
What about the SY postcode ?
That sort of logic means Aberystwyth is in England, unless Shrewsbury is in Wales.
-
Normal rules don't apply to strange border hinterlands.

John Devey achievements. Our captain when we were world famous as a football club. The best British baseball player in our championship winning year 1890.A Warwickshire batsman of merit with a high score of 247 against Derbyshire.
Absolutely no contest.

I remember during the Shilton-or-Clemence debate of the later 70s, one of my teachers saying that neither was a patch on the best two goalkeepers he'd ever seen play in the flesh: Gil Merrick and Lev Yashin.
-
I remember during the Shilton-or-Clemence debate of the later 70s, one of my teachers saying that neither was a patch on the best two goalkeepers he'd ever seen play in the flesh: Gil Merrick and Lev Yashin.
Yashin always played in all black.Highly respected in world football.
-
Jack Devey for me, got his hands on many tin pots in his time. I can't think of anyone else that won as many honours as him.
Also, you could make a case that he could have more goals for Villa than any other player. Certainly more than Billy Walker & Harry Hampton. Its just that no one counts the local cups (Birmingham Senior Cup, Birmingham Charity Cup, etc) & friendly games!
As a side note, honorary mentions to Bert Freeman & Dicky Davis who both where top scorers in Division One at some point. Both with Villa connections, Bert had a brief spell around 1905 & Dicky guested for Villa during WWII.
-
From players I have seen, the best Villa Brummie players (born in Birmingham) in order, statistically and by preference:
Gary Shaw
Mark Walters
Darius Vassell
Gabby Agbonlahor
Gary Thompson
Keith Leonard
Brian Small
Lew Chatterley
Alan Deakin
Jack Grealish
Steve Hunt
Luke Moore
Mike Tindall
Colin Withers
Craig and Gary Gardner, John Deehan and Lee Hendrie were born in Solihull.

Yashin was before my time, although I can just about remember him in the 1966 World Cup, but for me Gordon Banks will always be the best keeper I've seen - he must have made the occasional mistake - the key thing was, as a big game player, he never made them in big games.

Bit precious aren't you old bean. I'll ask my other half, see if she 'understands' as she's from round here, if she doesn't I'll tell her she doesn't deserve to live here anymore.
-
She'll understand. Trust me.

I'd say shaw, and maybe Edwards if we include the wider area on reputation.
But as I've said before, it is very odd that for a conurbation of this size, Birmingham hasn't produced more top players
-
Depends what you mean by top players. It's just random and fortune nothing to do with an area specifically. Anywhere can put forward a player of top quality.
-
Shaw - end of debate (for me anyway).
