I have decided to phase out driving to VP I would like to get a taxi from New St to the ground but what about a taxi back there? Is there a taxi rank within walking distance after the game, far from the madding crowd? Advice appreciated.
-
We had a nightmare on Saturday, trying to get a cab back from the corner of Nelson Road/Witton Road to the Jewellery Quarter. We booked one, waited for 20 mins, phoned back up and was told to wait another 20 mins and it still never came. In the end, we got into a private hire car that we hadn't booked but who's driver was prepared to take us to the pub
-
Another train from New Street to Witton, and back again, would be easier, quicker and cheaper.
-
It depends how many of you there are in the taxi
-
It's only about £2.50 return isn't it? So both ways i'd have thought that was cheaper even for 6 than a taxi both ways (not sure how much a taxi is but assuming over a tenner each way)?
-
Plenty of taxis outside of the Aston Social and the Tavern but you will need to wait for an hour, an hour and a half for the traffic to clear Aston Hall Road, if you want to get straight off I'd walk to either Aston or Witton stations and get the train back to New Street.
-
Depends on the time you're thinking of getting to the ground in terms of how close you'll get to it to be dropped off. You'll still make it as far as the church fir the Holte/Trinity or Witton Station for North Stand/Witton Lane
-
As soon as the traffic cordon is lifted there's a line of black cabs on Trinity Road but the traffic is still bad and you're better off getting the train back.
-
Our coach took an hour to get from the ground to Aston station on Saturday, next time we'll go for a drink at the let the traffic die down.
-
Or meet the coach a bit further from the ground?

They have to drop off and pick up at designated areas.
-
Don't home coaches park in the smaller car park next to the away coaches?

best meet the coach on the Walsall road

Yes but we first had to wait for the Swansea coaches to leave, to be fair it was our first one from London so we'll learn, we should have had drink in the Lions lounge, traffic going up the Litchfield Road towards town didn't look to bad but heading back to the M6 junction (which was closed) was choca.

I've been using aston tavern, couple pints after game and then get train, no rush

Thanks for all that much appreciated. The Witton train should be the answer but it was hell last week with the Swansea fans all heading for New St. It caused us to miss the best train back to Euston. If I can get back to my son's house in daylight my night driving problem does not kick in so timing is important. I wondered if we walk back to the Bartons if we could get a taxi there. Has anybody tried that? If I were not such a geriatric we could walk back to the city centre through Gosta Green the way we used to do in the days of centre partings and boots with toecaps.

2.5 mile walk.

I am super lazy and often get the 7 to the Bartons which often takes longer than had I walked but Six Ways Aston does appear to be the point where the density of traffic subsides and gives a a clear run into town.
Trains from Aston are more frequent than from Witton if that helps unless it's a Sunday but for what it's worth, a couple of months ago after the Leicester game, a group of six of us walked to Aston station and failed to get on a train so called a cab instead which arrived and got us into town within 20 minutes. Lichfield Road seems the quickest post match route into town in my experience.

Getting a bus from Lichfield Road into town generally works for me.
I'm not sure if there are any taxi ranks around there.

That corner's a nightmare after the game but several pre-booked taxis pick up there

Walking to town is quicker in my experience than waiting for buses or taxis, especially if it is a well attended game.

How many of those do we have?

after the swansea match 2 buses collided by the yew tree pub
causing gridlock back to witton island and nothing moved till 6pm
i often get the train from witton without a ticket cos you cant buy one at witton station
and just walk through at new street and no one says anything
sometimes i walk and get the bus
the best route is along the broadway from witton road
about a ten minute walk
all the way to birchfield road just down from one stop
loads of buses from there to town
33, 51 etc ,,,,,,,,,,and no traffic jams
-
I will give you a lift back to new street after every match. It will be pleasure considering the journey you undertake to watch the Villa.
-
Or another option might be a walk to Star City, plenty of taxis about there.

That is very helpful of you all especially your very generous offer olaf. When my kids were little we used to hide three milk crates in Aston Park to save carrying them in the car. If I could find a suitable hiding place I would seriously consider buying one of those fold up bikes. I could bike it into town and Damon and Lucas and Toby could jog. The best train is 5.30. I reckon I could walk 2.5 miles in half an hour. Just about.
-
There are bike racks in the North Stand car park by the players car park.
-
If you walk up to the villa tavern they will order cabs from there and they generally arrive in about 4 mins
-
I walk back from VP to St Pauls Metro station and it takes me about 40 minutes and that's not @ breakneck speed, I walk the No7 route and no buses pass me as they are all caught in the traffic
-
Walking up Trinity Road to the A34 and there are plenty of buses going to town.
-
I usually get a taxi from the Bartons - I just ring A2B, but if you're based more in the north of Brum then I think Star Cars are meant to be quite good.
