Title: The Open 2014 - Hoylake
Post by: Rotterdam on July 16, 2014, 06:40:50 PM
Who are you kids on?

I really think Rose can win it, but may be jinxed by winning this week (I know Phil did it last year...). I also think McDowell or Bjorn as an outsider, with a bit on Lowry and Zach Johnson.

Anyone but Tiger Woods or Rickie Fowler.

Its the second round that's been Rory's undoing. He needs something solid but not necessarily spectacular tomorrow.

Due to the Test, I won't be paying much attention this year.

I'll have to rely on UKR Sr. to keep me up to date. His new tablets mean that he's banned from the sun at the moment, so I expect he'll be glued to the golf on TV.

That happened just after he had hit, and fairly seriously injured, an elderly man with his tee shot. His head was all over the place.

I am not a big golf fan but if you are it must take some serious commitment to watch it either on the course or on the box. Is it a case of just dipping in and out or is it marathon sessions interrupted only by having to eat and go to the bog?

I love it, but then I play a bit myself, so it's interesting to see all the the things these guys do right that I do wrong!

Not that much different from  a five day Test I suppose, I can watch those and golf all day but it's not for everyone!

Just back from hoylake. Very enjoyable day. Was there from approx 10am to 430pm. Saw all the top players close up and saw lots of great golf and some duff shots too. Ticket price was £75 adult, U16s £0 . Parking was £15.
Hoylake is a typical English links course, tough conditions, a bit rough around the edges not perfectly manicured like your parkland courses in the US. That in mind was surprised to see the yanks do so well (bar TW).
All in all great day.

The scheduled tee off times have been revised because of weather warnings. The 72 players who made the cut will now go off in 3 balls (instead of the usual 2 balls) and from the 1st and 10th tees. The top half of the field will tee off from the 1st and the bottom half from the 10th.

Tee times are much earlier - 0900 to 1101

http://www.theopen.com/transcripts/OC-RA-DrawRound3.pdf

As a round in good weather would take about 5 hours this means without weather intervention the Third Round will finish around 4pm. However, the revised timings allow for up to 5 hours of delays and stoppages to account for the weather.

So Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Francesco Molinari are last off the 1st tee at 11.01am.

Bad weather on Sunday please, it's what links golf is all about.

I remember Paul lLawrie's Open win, loads moaned about it but basically he played the awful conditions better than all those other mollycoddled PGA golfers who only knew how to play manicured park courses in nice sunny America.

Bring on the weather! Rory to have a meltdown ala Augusta and Lowry to shoot a 62 course record please.

Peter Alliss has been a wonderful commentator on the golf over the years, but surely the time has come to put him out to grass.

It's becoming increasingly annoying that he can't follow the action accurately

Rory doing his best to throw it away the last few holes.

...and then eagles 16 and 18.  Game over me thinks.
My e/w on McDowell is my last bet standing.

I think he's great at the golf. A calming knowledgeable voice . One of the only bits of the bbc  I'm happy my dollars go towards . Same with ken brown .

I'd disagree there. He comes from a generation where it doesn't really matter at the end of the day and he doesn't spend his time spouting needless hyperbole that seems to afflict modern sports commentary. Golf is probably one of the sports closest to Cricket where the commentators whilst being able to give some whimsy and humour are able to provide quite sharp analysis of how players are thinking and also on the technicalities of swings/technique etc.  it'll be a sad day when he does eventually retire as I'm willing to forgive some of the lapses./mistakes he makes in commentary with some of the sharply observed comments he makes and picture he paints of the Open each year. He is one of those TV broadcasters who actually does understand the maxim of less is more and let the pictures tell the story.

Oh almost forgot, I've been blown away by McIlroys play over the last 2 days. I'll be honest and say I've always thought he's a bit of a c*** and has one of those punchable faces but he seems to have grown up a bit in the last couple of years and I'm starting to change my opinion. That 4 iron into the last to set up the eagle chance....Jesus I dream of hitting shots like that.........

The final day and it's closing is always an emotional time for me and I won't bore  you with the detail. For me watching on the bbc and with peter Alice & co as coverage is just right. If sky or Espn ever get hold of this coverage it will be a sad day. On Friday I watched 8 hours of glorious uninterpupted hours of sport: long may that continue

Isn't he a Villa fan, sure I read it in H&V once. Golf wouldn't be the same without his dulcet tones but yeah there are better comms on there nowadays.

Well done Rory anyway.

Well done Rory & for holding your nerve so well. I'm only sad that so many conceited prats will now start wearing grey shirts with pink sleeves.

Is it one of the Crown Jewels or whatever they're called that have got to be on terrestrial?

Nah not any more, Sky are certainly interested so I'm afraid it's going to be on there sooner or later or a split type coverage share as you get with the Masters now which the BBC used to have exclusively.

Money talks in any sport.

Well done Rory!
Can't see the R&A rushing back to Liverpool though. That has to be one of the worst poem venues going and certain sections of the crowd seemed a bit unruly. I've never seen someone manhandled off the course by 4 bobbies before.

Think he'd been heckling mcilroy when he was on his downswing.
Interesting at the prize giving when Rory mentioned he's a Yanited fan ! The booing was very very loud .

Had been heckling him all the way round apparently. There had apparently also been others singing about his ex-fiancee.
