I was just remembering Paul Birch's goal against Coventry in '87 - I was only eight and me and my cousin had just decided to venture up to the top of the Holte for the first time ever when he scored and we got swept all the way back down again as the fans went nuts. It's always been the most memorable Holte End moment for me, even above Tranmere, Inter Milan x2, etc. May well be covered elsewhere, but just wondered what other people's most memorable Holte celebration was?
-
Bournemouth 1972 and West Brom 1975, all goals scored at the Holte End, both victories after going a goal down.
-
Being in the Holte End I would say Tranmere, but watching the Holte from the Trinity when Cowans scored against Juventus is my favourite. It was a frighteningly awesome sight.
-
That goal from Sid was a terrific goal....stunning !
-
Tranmere for me, certainly. Amazing moment.
-
Peter Withe's last-minute goal against the Baggies when we won the league in 1980-81. The game looked destined for a draw, then Brendan Batson, the Albion defender, passed it back to his Goalkeeper Tony Godden and Withey nipped in to lob it over him - the Holte went mental even though the goal was at the opposite end! Such an important goal in the title race.......
-
47 998
Yeah right. Ground bursting at the seams and 2 off the capacity.
-
Gary Shaw vs Barca - 1983. It seemed we would never score and the place absolutely erupted when Shaw eventually netted. It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck when I think about it.
-
2-0 Inter.

Oh yes! A Baggie i know was there and they were stunned by the noise from the Holte - he said it was frightening
-
a more recent game would be the last minute Zat Knight equaliser vs Arsenal
-
League Cup semi-final v Manure 23 December 1970-Andy Lochhead's winner
-
Mortimer against Liverpool 1981
Platt against Bradford in 2nd Division
Kent Nielsen against Inter
-
Tranmere for me. Amazing stuff.
If I remember correctly the Holte was closed for Inter (x2) as it was during the reconstruction phase. I'm pretty sure that was why I was behind the goal at the bottom of the North Stand that night.
The Liverpool game on the last day was pretty special as well. Especially when Yorke's goal went in.
-
League Cup semi-final v Manure 23 December 1970-Andy Lochhead's winner
Same for me but, it was Pat McMahon that got the winner. I lost me trousers.
-
I left the Holte during the pens (as I see myself as a bad omen). me and this other bloke sat on the wall outside. People came spilling out when they needed to score to get through and they all rushed back in when Bossie saved it. When we finally won me and this complete strange bear hugged and danced about for about 10 secs.
-
Dalian vs Tranmere 1994
Nielsen vs Inter 1990
Savo's 1st Villa Park goal vs Coventry 1995
-
Kent Neilson against Inter.
Gary Shaw's late goal to level the aggregate score against Barcelona.
Gary Shaw's late winner against Small Heath in 1983.
Peter Withe's winner against Small Heath the following season. Van Den Hauwe's back pass didn't reach Coton due to all the water on the pitch.
-
Tranmere for me too, such a great atmosphere.

I have never seen footage of the goal With scored against the albion, did they have cameras at the game?

I'm sure someone found it and posted it on here or I'm imagining it.

Any of the three goals that helped relegate Coventry City. One being Angel's first goal for the club.
Still remember Merson's winner.
-
Kent Neilsen v Inter
Teale and Atkinson v Tranmere
And strangely Savo v Sheffield Wednesday in 1995/96 - he out-jumped Chris Woods about a yard out after Lee Briscoe had mis-cued a clearance over his own head on the byline towards the Trinity.

Yeah right. Ground bursting at the seams and 2 off the capacity.
A friend of mine at school played for the district side that night and his Dad went to watch him play. They both had season tickets in the seats somewhere.
-
I've got the Peter Withe g oal against the baggies from 80-81 on dvd lifted from a vhs tape. I gave the club a copy of Gary Shaw's goals from the away tie in Valur in the European cup winning campaign in 1981/82. They aren't on the club's official dvd. Don't think they've uploaded them on the OS some 5 years later....
-
All the one's mentioned above but a strange memory for me rather than a celebration was Charlton Athletic December 7th 1968 when there were barely 5,000 on the Holte in a crowd of about 12,000. It highlighted how massive, lonely and intimidating a terrace it was with the odd sporadic chant echoing around like the acoustics in a cathedral. I think this is more vivid because of the other extreme against Cardiff a few weeks later when it was pretty full for a Brian Tiler debut goal, so I'll claim that as my most memorable Holte end celebration.
-
The third goal against Tranmere is simply untouchable for me given the monumental importance of it.
More recently the goal by Benteke against QPR. I felt for the first time in years the crowd and the the players were pulling together in adversity. All the goodwill that lambert spectacularly blew last season.
Ash's goal against small Heath in the 5-1. The 4-2 against Liverpool under BFR was something to behold.
-
Speaking of Charlton, I was one of the fortunate crowd that witnessed the 11-1 win. It was around my birthday in November IIRC. I can still recall the headlines in the News of The World the next day: Villa Shooting Boots Size Eleven.
-
The two goals vs Ipswich in 1993 were tough to beat, Yorke header from a flowing move, Deano's 40 yarder. Both in front of the Holte.
-
-
Platt v Bradford was a good one.
Any Andy Gray arms aloft in front of the Holte also.
-
League Cup semi-final v Manure 23 December 1970-Andy Lochhead's winner
Same for me but, it was Pat McMahon that got the winner. I lost me trousers.
I must have got the goals the wrong way round then, it was big Andy's equaliser in my head.
But at least I kept my trousers on.
-
Stanley Victor against A. Madrid, the Holte End actually shook that night.
-
The comeback against against Arsenal after being 0-2 down at half time in '98. The game was delayed after the break following the terrible incident with the parachutist, which may have added something to the atmosphere. A Dion Dublin winner late in the game and the Holte went bonkers.
-
Stanley Victor against A. Madrid, the Holte End actually shook that night.
And it sparked a last 15 minutes or so of absolute madness on and off the pitch when every time we had the ball we all thought we were going to score.
I also remember during those few minutes seeing two fire engines come down Trinity Road, lights flashing and sirens going. Maybe we set the earthquake sensors off that night. ;D
-
For the present Holte > Stanley Victor's was a bit special, along with Dalian (Tranmere), Merse v Cov and surprisingly the Zat Night v Arsenal
Standing wise in the Holte > Kent Nielson v Inter for me
-

I could feel the Holte moving beneath my feet that afternoon after the equaliser.

Of course it was! Evens with Kent's then for me.

Some good choices. By the time Zat fired his winner I'd migrated to the Witton Lane Upper.

Same for me but, it was Pat McMahon that got the winner. I lost me trousers.
This, definitely!
Both our goals at the Holte End, both headers....16 years old and the place went NUTS!
(but I didn't lose my trousers!)
-
go along with Bernie, on the second Semi goal by McMahon against Utd, Up there though, Sammy Morgan against Arsenal FA Cup replay 74. so much build up and emotion around that one !

Sorry FMWMU, Pat McMahons winner was at the Witton End. Both headers mind. I lost me trousers and me old man who, was only a little bloke and I spent most of the match holding on to the back of his collar so he wouldn't get crushed as we shot forwards. It didn't work, he ended up yards away after both goals. Happy days.
-
The old mind playing tricks dave!
Happy days indeed!
-
Nothing has come close for me. From my position on The Holte I could see McMahon rise up towards the cross, but visibilty was a bit murky and the general straining to see from the crowd on The Holte meant that I'd no idea how the ball actually got into the net. Not that I cared, but it was interesting to see the goal for the first time on a video on here in the last year or two.
-
As Dave Shelley rightly points out, the Pat McMahon winner was at the Witton End. But it was rather good - my first ever game on the Holte too.
I reckon my favourite goal celebration was Peter Withe against the Albion, closely followed by David Geddis' first against the Blues in December 1980. One not mentioned above was John Deehan's first in the 1977 LC semi v QPR - my dad ended up about 15 yards away.
My last true nutty moment on the Holte was probably Zat Knight's last minute equaliser v Arsenal.
-

Blimey, I remember both those matches in much the same way as you Tommy. The Charlton match was 0-0, but the performance an improvement on previous (from an admittedly low base) if I recall it correctly. The much mentioned Cardiff match, with snow all around the pitch was in front of an amazing 41000 on Boxing Day. And Tommy Doc took over the reigns in between the 2 matches. I think.
-
Just has to be Dalian's goal in the Semi Final, the place actually rocked with delirium. Then in slow motion they nearly got a winner a minute later, which was surely the largest sigh of relief on the Holte as the ball hit the post a rolled to safety.
-
Several moments spring to mind:
Definitely Withe v the Baggies in 81 - most important and at the time unexpected.
Bruce Rioch's thunderbolt equaliser v Leeds in a League Cup tie around about 73. Jackie Charlton had waltzed through the Villa defence from the halfway line in about the first minute for one of the most embarrassing goals conceded.
Two goals in the final minute or so against Barcelona in 1978 after Cruyff had gone off.
Intimidating Bob Wilson so much in the FA Cup 4th round replay in 73 that he played like a wet blanket, conceded two goals and was basically petrified, after he got Sammy Morgan sent off in the first game at Highbury.
Being absolutely packed in 90 minutes before the kick off v Sunderland in 75.
And so many more...
-
I'll never forget the aftermath of Tommy Hitz's thunderbolt against Blues. We were in the front row down by the corner flag and Hitz ran over and hugged my brother. I've still got the vision of looking up and seeing Juan Pablo perched on someone's shoulder about 3 feet away from me. Will probably never get better than that in terms of celebrating a goal. Even better that it was seat springing blooter. Shame the ending of that game robbed us of a perfect day.
-
Withe's goal against the albion.
-
Old Holte in about 82 or 83 against the Blues - I took my sister who was only about 17 and it poured. Withe scored right near the end I seem to recall, prodding the ball through the keeper's legs and it rolled agonisingly into the net, taking what seemed like ages. We were halfway up the Holte and by the time the celebrations came to an end, she was in a completely different section. The last I saw of her was her falling away in front of me as the crowd surged forward. I used to love the days when you had to arrive a couple of hours before KO to get in the queue to guarantee you'd get in

Only goal of the game. That was early in the '83-'84 season and Van Den Hauwe's back pass got stuck on the wet pitch and Peter Withe nipped in to score. I don't remember it being particularly late in the game though. A few months previously we beat them by the same scoreline 1-0 on Easter Monday ans Gary Shaw did get a late goal around the 80th minute I think. The game you are talking about is possibly the only derby when the 'dislike' on the pitch beat the 'dislike' in the stands.

Noel Blake hilariously missed a penalty by striking he ball along the ground in a waterlogged area. It barely reached Spinky.
Game aka "The battle of Brum".

I marvel at how people have a better memory than me, thank you! I am probably imagining it being near the end for dramatic effect

October 15th - my birthday. Sat in the Trinity for this game
For some reason, I always thought it was Howard Gayle who missed the pen
-

I took a breath as that free kick was taken, and didn't breathe it out as the air just fell out of my arse instead.
-
For that Blues game Mel and my mate had seats in the lower Trinity, don't ask me why, we never went there at all. It pissed so hard on us that we abandoned the seats and went to the back of them where there was a bit of shelter.
I will never ever forget Noël Blake picking up the ball for the penalty turning to Blues supporters in the Witton End and giving the big fist pump. Five seconds later we were celebrating wildly, more than when we actually scored. Just looking at that useless fucker standing there having missed was worth the soaking AND the money to get in.

I remember celebrating Frain missing his penalty at the Sty in the league cup game in '92 more than the goal we scored.
-
A couple which stand out for me, were the crucial 2-0 win over Liverpool towards the 94-95 season and mostly after Dwight Yorke's second goal (remember hugging a random stranger :D). The third and winning goal in the dramatic 3-2 win over Arsenal at Christmas 98, the atmosphere was all the more special as we came back from 2-0 down against the defending champions, and because beating a title rival made a statement.

I thought it was even more hilarious when he put the ball in the net, didn't realise the goal had been ruled out and was a fair way on his lap of honour around the pitch before realising. Although I can't remember which actually came first, the missed pen or the 'goal'.

I was only 9 at the time but I will never forget that match. I was so happy at the end it felt like good had beaten evil 1-0.
-
It's shame that video doesn't show the fist pump from Noel Blake.
That ridiculous dance of delight he did when he thought they had scored had me LOLing though!!
-
If I remember correctly Small Heath had started the season slightly better than us and were a little bit above us in the table. The Friday night BRMB phone in before the match was full of talk of how the tide had turned and they were now better than Villa. We finished tenth and they went down. Although to be fair they came straight back up. Then went straight back down again. For sixteen years.
-
A nice touch at the end there by tough-guy Blake. The opposition manager did that to me once after a Sunday match.
-
He had got away with it until Gary Newbon kicked up a fuss on Central sports news. Then he got done for it and Ron Saunders banned Central cameras and Gary Newbon from the sty for a while.
-
QPR in 2013 stands out for me when benteke scored the winner in our 3 two win. Important goal in a great game. I think my excitement stemmed from not having anything to celebrate for quite a while

Those 3 for me. First the joy of Angel's first goal followed by Merson's beauty to send them down. The place also went nuts after SVC's goal.

The Chelsea game last season was pretty good as belief we could get something built and built - about 5 minutes before Delph scored I turned to my mate and said a goal would take the f'ing roof off!
Andy's slo-mo line-crosser against Man City was celebrated twice as we all jumped up as he touched it past the keeper and then again when it finally crossed the line...
-
Did anyone on here witness Paul Mortimer's infamous v-sign salute to the Holte after scoring?

As I remember it he ran to celebrate with the fans, didn't get the response he wanted and gave a gesture that said 'forget it'. I always thought the incident was blown out of proportion.
Mark Walters little dance when he scored at The Holte End for Liverpool. Then when we were 4-2 up singing "Walters, show us your dance".

The Chelsea game was my dad's 60th Birthday too. We Celebrated by going to the Gold Cup on the Friday, then did an all dayer for the Chelsea game. Got him a nice little feature in the programme too. He was over the moon. The Chelsea result and performance sent him into orbit.

Yea, he scored in a already won game v Luton Town 4-0. I think he went to the Holte End strutting thinking 'hey I'm the business' and the fans weren't having it, he was crap before and after that goal.
-
League Cup semi-final v Manure 23 December 1970-Andy Lochhead's winner
Same for me but, it was Pat McMahon that got the winner. I lost me trousers.
Probably would have been mine. If I hadn't been in the Witton End that night.

I remember it along the same lines as Andy and Damo.
I also seem to remember that the antipathy towards him started at a game at Villa Park earlier in the season - maybe the 3-1 win over Forest, in which Teale scored an own goal after 12 seconds or something ridiculous? Mortimer came on as a sub at some point, while we were level with them I think, but really putting them under pressure below the Holte. He was on the right wing when the ball, which has been in the box immediately beforhand, fizzed out to him. Instead of knocking it straight back in, he let it run out of play, even though he had plenty of time. The Holte let its dissatisfaction be known. I think Big Ron also took him off not long after. Being subbed when already a sub never being a good sign.
My faded memory of that day is of him seemingly being very short of confidence; maybe even a bit overwhelmed.
