We could use a cathartic release like 6-1 v Sunderland last season. So, they will win with a Sidwell goal.

1-0

Weimann 90

ideally. Sadly, we'll stick out VP as is our wont against most teams, especially crap ones. So, 1-2 it is.

Can see a high-scoring draw, 2-2. Fulham have got some real quality players in their side and teams down on their luck tend to perform well here. Think we'll see off Southampton and Hull at VP after this though.

"Same old Villa fucking useless." - Brilliant. The exact words I would have posted on here after the match.

I think Fulham will go 2-0 up. We'll then decide to start playing in the second half and it will end either 2-1 or 2-0. Cue mass suicide.

Hangeland for them 51

Have to say that performance at Craven Cottage goes down as the worst performance of the season for me.

Purely because Fulham were rubbish before that game...and have remained rubbish since then. Only consolation is Berbatov ran the show that day and he isn't around, instead we'll have to contend with whatever 17 year old YTS McGath will stick upfront this week.

Really I'm expecting a 2-0 win here and that will be us heroically safe for another year, yippee.

I reckon this will be like the same fixture last year, a horrible nerve-wracking tense affair settled by a 90th minute goal which will be somehow bundled over the line.

I just wonder how many will be left in the ground to see Villa snatch a last minute goal?

1-0. Vlaar from the half way line.

That was actually the year before. Last season we wrestled a draw from the jaws of victory - N'Zogbia for us and Fabian Delph scoribg an own goal for them. Relegation battles are beginning to merge together. It will probably be another tight 1-1 or such like on Saturday.

Whatever the result, we'll make it fu**in' hard for ourselves, as per.
4-0 win.

Or a 0-0 draw.

or 0-1 to them.

or 3-3

or 0-3

such is Aston Villa 2013-14!

But I remain optimistic! Praying. Hoping. Polishing my lucky charm (not a euphemism, you dirty-minded fu**ers).

Sorry guys but it doesn't look good for Saturday as my daughter is attending the game and she has never seen villa win in over 20 attempts. I even made a point of taking her to the Palace game on Boxing Day to break the jinx (sorry). Looks like a repeat for me we lumber on for 90 minutes trying to score and then sidwell does the inevitable. At least you'll know who to blame!

Sidwell winner in the 90th minute for them. I think given how winnable this game is and the fact we should win it comfortably, and how desperate Fulham are for a win at the moment, we'll oblige them. I've said it before but I'll say it again, as this is comfortably our most winnable game on paper in the last 7, it's the one I worry about the most. We always approach games like this wrong. We're not in the shit enough, as we were playing QPR last season, that we'll find that bit extra from somewhere, IMO. When everything seems to point to a Villa win, the team seems to disappoint.

Hope I get proven wrong though and Benteke lashes in a hattrick.

I agree but don't you think in his absence Lambert could have played Lowton and moved Bacuna into KEA's higher pressing role.  For me this would have been much better than having Sylla in there or leaving Delph and Westy on their own and shunting Alby up top with the other forwards?

Another frustrating display. We may snatch it because Fulham are so bad, but should we lose I can see it turning very nasty. Lambert will get his Bolton moment. Hopefully we'll do enough to draw at least, but a win should be the minimum requirement here.

Am I right in thinking that Mitroglu is out and that Bent can't play against us? Also, Berbatov isn't there now.

So presumably that leaves the kid Woodward (something like that) and Dembele (not the Tottenham one) up front for them?
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Fulham Pre-Match Thread
Post by: BoskoDjembaSalifou on April 03, 2014, 12:35:31 PM
Woodrow and Dembele, yes. One thing I like about Magath is that he doesn't seem bothered about reputations. Starting youngsters over someone like Bent proves that.

About the game, we simply have to win. No excuses.

Roll over on this one (and I think we potentially will) and the knives will properly be out - we simply have to turn up.

If Magath knows anything at all he'll play wingers and Sidwell will get 2. If we get the first goal I fancy us to win it otherwise a draw - pathetic. Come on Lambert sort it out.

Convincing display. A deserved 3 points - after 15 minutes
How did we win that... [half] - after 45 minutes
Decent game, unlucky not to win. Draw - after 75 minutes
Typical Villa conceding in the last 10 mins. Draw - after 80 minutes
Same old Villa fucking useless. Loss - after 90+4 minutes

We'll win, because they are rubbish (one of the papers this morning reckons they've already decided to sack Magath at the end of the season because his training methods are alienating the players) but we will make hard work of it.

2-1 Villa.

Weimann and Bacuna for us.

Sidwell, inevitably, for them.

I'm in the pessimist camp and believe that we'll screw this up: at the moment there are too many defenders making poor decisions or just cocking up. If Magath has any sense, he'll look at the WHU / Stoke tapes and set up to defend, but with a couple of lively wide players as an outlet. If he does this, we'll lose.
Lambert lacks the players to open up a defensive opposition: he might as well play some of the attacking youngsters, as something different and fresh.

A quick look at Fulham's goals against column suggests that any strategy based on defensive solidity is unlikely to succeed for them.

Probably just Twitter BS but rumour that Tekkers has done his achilles and out for 6 months. Definately jokes though, I remember reading on there that he had broke his leg in an international only to see him clapping fans walking off the pitch 20mins later...

Please don't start Holt.

You have to look at the Fulham defence. Hettinga and particularly Hangeland will be really hoping he starts as they'll be happy heading long balls away all game.

What they don't like is pace and players running at them so I'd happily go with a front trio of Gabby, Albrighton and Weimann for this although I read Gabby is probably out aswell?

Robinson time. I think the lad will possibly be more confident and fired up than Helenius. It would seem this is possibly the case as Robinson is the one making the bench. He's also scoring regularly for the reserves. I'd start with Gabby and Weimann up top against Fulham, but definitely be looking to bring Robinson on.

Lets face it, Fulham will be playing a kid up front probably, we may as well take the punt.

We've enough of a gap on 18th to take the risk, and he may well hit the ground running.

And also have to say, Holt should still be nothing more than a last 10 minutes option. He's over the hill, unfit and not very good. He's breathing out his arse within 5 minutes. I'd play Bowery before him. Likewise Helenius needs a chance to prove himself too.

I really think we'll lose this. I had that feeling anyway but without benteke and perhaps gabby I can't see us functioning as a team at all. I can't see holt offering much, but lambert likes a big man and we haven't got another.

Isn't Bowery back now? I think Donny wanted to keep him but they had to prioritise a defender for their last loan so couldn't extend his loan till May. Last I heard anyway, it may have changed.

Think we'll win 4-1 same score we lost the last two.

Benteke hat trick 8, 25, 78 Delph, 90
Hangeland for them 51

Safe for another season yippee UTV!

With the big man now out I need to revise my prediction.

2-1 to us, Weimann, Delph.

God knows. I am assuming a defeat though. Hopefully KEA will be fit. Last two games have shown how much we miss his pressing imho.

I agree but don't you think in his absence Lambert could have played Lowton and moved Bacuna into KEA's higher pressing role.  For me this would have been much better than having Sylla in there or leaving Delph and Westy on their own and shunting Alby up top with the other forwards?

Totally agree.

Have him on the bench then, I'd quite like to push Bacuna on as one of the three forward and just have as much pace as possible running at Fulham's back 4.

Me too, maybe something like

Guzan
Lowton Vlaar Clark Bennett
Delph Westy Bertrand
Bacuna Andi Alby

Subs
Steer Baker Sylla Luna Holt Tonev Robinson

The stage is set for Grant to score in front of the Holt, I myself am not overly concerned at the lose of our Chritian, as I have seen Villa play without him this season and imho I think the players step up, I want to see what Grant can do, I know he's wiley and will hold the ball up which we can use to our advantage, Andreas playing off him I am optimistic, we have players with something to prove, true Andreas has got to leave everything on the pitch, as Grant aint going to be running balls down, I want Bennett back in because I thought he had a motm performance against Chelsea, and could we ask for better opposition than to get life without Benteke started.

Villa win by at least 2

Fulham are a very poor side and need to score 3 to even draw most games. They're as good as down and I think we will beat them pretty handily.

I would bring Lowton back in and push Bacuna into midfield if Gabby is out. They cannot cope with pace at all.

I'd have Westwood anchoring the midfield, with Delph and KEA (who I think has played pretty well of late) more advanced. Bacuna and ALbrighton wide with Andi up top. Plenty of width and more than enough pace to see us knock three or four past this utter shower.

As an aside, I would revert to Gabby up top on his own at Palace and for all remaining away games.

Without Benteke it is difficult to get excited about the chances of Villa scoring. Even when he was missing those chances you still thought he might stick one away. I would like to see Helenuis have the first half just to see if he has anything and for Callum Robinson have 20min-30min after the interval. No chance that will happen of course. Lambert will play Holt and the dreadful (but hardworking) Weimann for the whole game.

Should we lose Lambert will trot out the usual excuses which dont hold up...and guess what...we go again.

Sounds like we will be playing Holt, Weimann and Albrighton as the attacking 3 and they will be playing Dembele (or that Woodford kid) with Holtby behind him.

Still, a 0-0 would suit us I guess!

Can't see Fulham scoring too many so it will depend on whether we can form some sort of cohesion or whether we are the ill-passing, devoid of ideas bunch of crap we've shown at times this season. An early goal should lead to a routine win but I can see it remaining level for a good while and then anything could happen. 1-0 with a second half winner.

I'd take a bit of a gamble today and really freshen things up. Rest half fit players. Fulham are pretty woeful, I actually think a few of the outsiders in the squad could be fired up if given a chance today.
Going by the assumption that KEA and Delph (I'd rest Delphy anyway) don't make it:

Guzan
Bertrand
Clark
Vlaar
Lowton

Westwood
Bacuna
Johnson/Gardner

Tonev
Helenius
Albrighton

I'd bench Weimann because he's been woeful lately and looks knackered. Holt just shouldn't ever start a game. He's only got 10 minutes in him at this level.

If Delph is out, then I think it's a toss up between 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2

I think he will go with the former and play Sylla and Westwood sitting, with Albrighton, Tonev and Bacuna wide/central with Andi up top. I hope Andi takes his challenge up by being up front in his natural position. I will be glad to see Bacuna and his attacking qualities higher up the pitch. He was excellent against West Brom.

If it is 4-4-2, the. It will be Albrighton, Sylla, Westwood and Bacuna with Andi and Helenius.

A Villa team to make the opposition quake in its boots if ever there was one, what a magnificent line up, I am inspired
Did you not mean insipid ?

It's getting pretty grim Dan, that team reminds me of 1986

Are we ever going to get a bit of luck?

There are at least three teams worse than us in the division - that's luck in bucket loads

So we've lost all of our key players other than Vlaar now.

It'll be 4-4-2 with a midfield of Bennett, Bacuna, Westwood and Albrighton.

That's why, when you have two very close brushes with relegation, you go into the next season prepared with a squad capable of bringing you over the line.

Bad luck isn't an excuse for the past few seasons. Bad luck is something that can relegate a club like Wigan or Bolton. When the likes of Leeds, Newcastle or Villa find themselves in trouble it is because they miss-managed their resources or got too complacent. We have had plenty of warnings. We are well warned.

Need to get some points on the board asap.

@AVFCOfficial: #AVFC Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Bertrand, Westwood, Bennett, Bacuna, Albrighton, Weimann, Holt. #AVFCLIVE

Finally. The line up we've all been clambering for.

Is there any other Premier club that have as many players injured or ill as ours without actually playing ? Anyone got any idea why Delph is out?

Carruthers is injured.

Bacuna will be playing centre midfield I'd have thought?

Yep it's not pretty, it's massively devoid of any quality.

Indeed, and it's not really Lambert's fault that much. Lack of money made up for by a surplus of injuries will lead to teams like this one.

While your general point is fair enough, you take four of the first eleven of any team bar Man City out, and they will suffer. Today we're missing Okore, Delph, Gabby, Benteke who would certainly have been in, plus Kozak and El Ahmadi who would have been first reserves.

This is as bare bones as any Villa side I have seen take to the pitch. Jesus/Moses/Mohammed all of you pray for us!

That's true, absolutely no disputing that. My point is, we should be safe by now. We should, in my opinion, be on more than 34 points at this stage of the season and part of that had been down to over-reliance on players like Baker and Clark because we didn't loan in a centre back in January.

Bennett out wide is interesting, has a bit of skill and can whip a decent ball in. Albrighton's crossing has been good of late and if there's one thing Holt can still do, surely it's head the ball? Holt headed hat-trick.
