Five changes for Manchester United, with Nemanja Vidic, Alex Buttner, Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher and Shinji Kagawa all restored to David Moyes' side.

Starting XI: De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Vidic, Buttner, Young, Fellaini, Fletcher, Kagawa, Mata, Rooney.

Would much rather have Lowton in at RB and Bacuna in midfield with Delph and Westwood. Don't rate Albrighton.

Post by: john2710 on March 29, 2014, 12:08:00 PM
Lambert doesn't really have a choice but to put Albrighton in, as our midfield cover is non-existent. I'd expect Weimann alongside Benteke, with Gabby & Albrighton wide. Correct decision to drop Baker, his speed of movement & thought would get exposed even more than usual.

I hope we stand up to the fookers & make them earn anything they get.

I'd probably agree with that, although that midfield is too lightweight and unconvincing either way.

He just deserves a start , he probbaly isnt prem level but theres a lot that have not put the effort in lately as he has .

but agree on Lowton , I would keep Marc in thou and drop andi

albrighton does ok against these

In the tradition of Villa allowing the same players to score against us, expect sideshow Raheem to open the scoring. Probably after using knuckledusters to get an advantage.

it's our attitude today more than selected the side itself that will dictate whether or not we can win this game. We've shown that any number of combinations has worked and failed, but where it has worked it is because we've gone in with a desire to win the ball and knock it around. I've always said, I'll take a loss if we tried to win, and that's the most important thing today too. We can certainly beat this lot because they'll be under massive pressure to perform.

I wonder how we'll set up. I'd prefer 4-2-3-1. Albrighton on the right and Gabby on the left, with Andi dropped off Benteke.

I suspect though it'll be more like a 4-2-1-3 with Albrighton in the middle, no width and lots of our players stepping on each others toes.

Lambert really doesn't have many options, does he? - this looks very light in the middle but there is noone else available unless he plays Bennett and Lowton to provide extra defensive and wide strength.

David James is a tool.
Still we have the joy of listening to Michael Owen's monotonous drivel & stating the bloody obvious to look forward to.
Title: Re: Manchester Utd vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: passitsideways on March 29, 2014, 12:42:20 PM
I guess if Lambert is really going to buy and then play a no. 10 as everyone seems to want/expect him to, he's going to have to do so at the expense of one of the midfield three, so why not get a start on it now?

We're not quite safe yet, of course, but whatever.

You are kidding - I haven't seen any other players 'slip' - wear the right studs for a start .

Not really, United are having a spell after scoring, which considering they're at home and assembled to the cost of a small country's GDP isn't surprising. We're doing fine.

Again, saying after one bad game that he shouldn't play the position is a non-sequitur. He has played well at full back many times this season, so saying he shouldn't play there because of isolated low points you can remember makes no sense whatsoever. Benteke's had bad games and missed chances, is he not a striker then? Or is it because the first time you saw Bacuna he was in a different position, so any mistake he makes in another one is because he's not where you imagine he should be? It makes no sense.

That's revisionist. He's had bad games and good games like everyone else in the team, why don't you question whether they should play in their positions? You only think this because the first time you saw Bacuna he was playing somewhere else so you got a fixed idea. He makes no errors which to me look the result of being in the wrong position - he makes mistakes because he's an enthusiastic but limited footballer, like almost all of our players.

I went for 2-2 on the pre-match, with us taking an early lead and then being pegged back, it's gone pretty much exactly as I expected.

Buttner is very lucky to not have got a 2nd yellow for the high boot on Clark, that was exactly what happened to Benteke vs Chelsea last year and you see yellows for those challenges fairly regularly.

Bacuna makes mistakes because his tackling technique when he goes off his feet is poor.  If he'd made a 'textbook' challenge there his trailing leg wouldn't have been anywhere near making that contact.  You could also see him preparing himself in the couple of strides before he made the challenge, its always the same, you can see him thinking about how to make the tackle, someone more confident in their technique wouldn't do that.

Beginning to wonder if I am watching the game on BT Sport or MUTV. The united love in even from the like of an ex Villa player in David James is embarrassing. Great goal from Westy but worryingly early for us and although we played well we started showing them too much respect. Both goals on the counter after Gabby lost possession?

All is not lost here I think. Their defence is not great. Still believe we can at least get a point here.

Ron must be feeling sick. He's been great first half.

I have to believe that because losing against these is bad enough but when it's their worst team for over 20 years it really sticks in the craw. And BT should really be ashamed of themselves. Their bias is sickening.

I'm sorry but Bacuna is not a first choice fullback, for every good game he's had a nightmare. If Luna or Bennett played as he did against Stoke they'd be slaughtered. Why Clark leaves Rooney standing unmarked for the first goal is baffling.

Gabby needs to start earning his wages, since the fame at Anfield he's brought nothing to the team.

The worst Man U team in a generation & we gift 2 soft goals. They've created nothing.

Look, I've been a Bacuna fan all season but he's playing out of position.

Its sickening the way they drool over United even when they are shit.

It's bloody roasting at the Theatre of Wet Dreams, like an end of season game! No way should we be losing this, they're just a long ball shower of mid table shite.

We will do these wankers in the second half.

For some reason I read that 1st as we're just a long ball shower of mid table shite

Fulham away is a better example, but how about Norwich at home? And Chelsea at home? He played well and as a full back in a full back way, which isn't just not making rash challenges - if that was the case then you could say Christian Panucci 'isn't a full-back'. Making a mistake in a position doesn't disqualify you from that position.

I think he actually gets caught out of position a lot - he's very frequently on the wrong side of the defender. Watch how many balls the Mancs loft down our right flank.

FFS. Our defending as a team is absolutely shocking. Just before the goal, they had the ball in the midfield, and our midfielders all backed about off about 15 yards. No pressure whatsoever and they can pick a pass into the front men. We're only ever any good when we press, so why aren't we doing it?

It would have been a poor decision in any position. It doesn't matter where you play, diving in is a bad idea. Full backs in general dive in more than other positions, actually. Playing in a position is about, funnily enough, positioning, and I think he's improved massively since the Fulham game at this. Once again you've just asserted that he's playing out of position, as if merely saying it counts as evidence. You've said it a lot I'm sure, but that's all you've done.

Another afternoon beckons  of looking nervously at what the teams below us are doing . Sick of this shit

Yes. We are a mid-table club.

So long as the teams below us do us a favour that is.

I'll say this much - that from Bacuna was not bad evidence against his being a full-back. Completely misjudged everything.

I'm talking about this fixture in particular. They've taken more points off us than any other prem team. We have performed well against the other top clubs and beaten them fairly regularly. However when it comes to man u, form and performance just doesn't matter. We've beaten them twice since 1995, nearly 20 years.

The main difference today hadn't been the comedy defending but the poor attacking.

We've had 7 shots, Man U 6. But the difference is that Man U have had 5 on target and we've had 1.
