Lowton back in, and Bacuna to right midfield. Looks like 4-4-2.

Would rather have albrighton in than kea to give us more width but its not a bad line up , defence looks solid .

Looks like a reasonable team - now, can Lambert get them 'up' for this?

Would have beem happier if Gabby was fit but still fancy us tonight. Prefer making sure he is fit rather than risk knobbling him for longer.

Looks like 4-4-2, in which case Monty may blow a fuse:

Guzan,
Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Bertrand,
Bacuna, Westwood, El Ahmadi, Delph,
Weimann, Benteke.

Don't like Westwood and El Ahmadi at home.

It may just be 4-3-3 with Bacuna replacing Gabby ?

Could be, but I would bet against  it. PL does not trust Lowton's pace enough  to let Bacuna get too far  forward. Much will depend on whether WBA have a competent and pacy wide left attacking player.

That's what I think, when has lambert ever played 4-4-2

I'd be very surprised if we lined up 4-4-2 but then why bring in Bacuna instead of Albrighton in a 4-3-3? Either way we do have better players than them all over the park, with midfield being the closest, so should win if Lambert can get them composed and ready to play football. Big IF. UTV UTV UTV

Thats what I reckon, Bacuna or KEA in the hole. 4-3-1-2.

Yeah this is my feeling. Probably Bacuna roaming, but spending more time on the right to cover Lowton.

Well, it's not dull

The neutrals are probably enjoying it.

In the same way you might walk past a schoolboy fight outside the school gates at 4.30 and chuckle to yourself.

I wish we'd stop fucking lumping it. I know it worked for the goal, but fuck me, there's a limit to how much that'll work.

Every day I go past Villa Park, and it always looks brilliant. This lot don't deserve to play in such a fine setting.

Amen to this, it always raises the hairs on the back of my neck when I see Villa Park. Iconic.

My brother in law's a Blade so I did a bit of lurking after our FA cup defeat.  I know they'd have been in a good mood but it was noticeable how many loved VP.

Of its type (ie proper) it's the best in the country.

Bacuna's had two glorious openings. Should have hit the target the first time, and needed to do better with the chip the second. Maybe not score, but at least get it towards the goal.

An extremely entertaining half, mind, and we showed great resolution to come back, but towards the end, they're passing it about significantly better than us again.

I wonder, are their players better than ours? Is it the coaching? Confidence?

Both sides are defending truly terribly, though. Lowton is fine coming forward, but you could hold a concert in the space he leaves open behind him.

Cracking game.
Their defence is all over the bloody place. Our defence has been very sloppy. Vlaar has been disappointingly below par today.

This will probably end up being 5-4 (to us) or something like that.

I'd like to see Albrighton on to offer some width. KEA has barely touched the ball. Bacuna can slip into CM and Alby can switch wings.

Weimann and Benteke have been excellent. When they're on form (particularly the big man) we look a much better side.

Weimann looks a different player when he's in the middle. He's got the freedom to drift to the left and right and also make runs off their CH's. He's brimming with confidence too, which is great to see.

I think there's a goal or two in Benteke today. I can't see their backline stopping him.

What a first half, I have never seen anything like that.

Bertrand has been immense. I really hope we can sign him in the summer.

Both defences are not looking good, there will be chances in the second half. Mostly for us ;-) They have left Benteke unmarked twice at corners, odd.

I hope their late goal wont give them confidence again.

I think we've just been sloppy on a few occasions where-as they just look persistently all over the place. If Vlaar wakes up in the second half, and Lowton stops leaving acres, we shouldn't have many problems from their attack.

The Albion are there fir the taking, it's all down to whether we can tighten up at the back and take our chances up front.

Personally, I'd take Lowton off, his positional sense is shocking. also a bit worried about Vlaar, doesn't look quite fit?

On a plus note, its third time lucky on the left back front. If he wants to come I don't think we could afford not to take him on a permanent. Send the other two back to where they came from to help fund it.

It was almost identical to the goal Sturridge scored against us the other week. A lot of their players look very comfortable on the ball. Thankfully they have a very dodgy defence. It's really up to us to expose it and avoid exposing our own. This game can go either way, neither side managing to dominate midfield and both teams making plenty of errors.

This is where Lambert earns his money, at half time they'll feel better having got it back to 3-2 than we will having let the lead slip.

He's got to say the right things, and send us out to play the second half the right way, too.

My money is on 3-3 though.

Absolutely. He would be murdering them.
I also have to say, that half a season of having Luna on one side and Bacuna or Lowton on the other might have ranked as one of the poorest pair of fullbacks in the top division, but I think West Brom could well claim that title with Reid and Ridgewell. Reid in particular has no place still being a premier league player. Bloody awful player.

I genuinely fear a goal every time Westwood, Bacuna or El-Ahmadi attempt to pass to a team-mate. Not because Albion are brilliant, but because I expect a massive fuck-up.
Aside from his slightly farcical goal and a great pass to Benteke, Bacuna has been poor. I'm not sure playing that AM role suits him because his touch is abysmal. I wouldn't mind have him as the mop up man in midfield or out wide to use his pace, but he hasn't get the technique to be playing behind the front two.

I'd take KEA off, bring on Albrighton, and put Bacuna back to help out Westwood.

If we replace KEA and Westwood with two better players, I think that helps our defence and our attack and we'll look a better side. It's unlikely. The best we can hope for is a last ditch signing of Hoolahan this window, but we should be a bit ambitious. Buy two decent mids and make a good push for top 8. Southampton and maybe Newcastle's places could be there for the taking.

This picture perfectly encapsulates why we are so shite at the back.  Why are the two centre backs on the same blades of grass?

There's some potentially pornographic photoshopping to be done there I think.

I tend to agree re Lowton. Bertrand, by comparison, has been pretty much flawless, whereas Lowton just seems all over the shop.

I'm also nothing like convinced by Westwood, keeps giving the ball away, then letting the game pass him by.

2 days to find a genuine holding midfielder. More I watch us, the more I think we need that more than anything.

If you want to play modern formations you need two of those chappies, and we do not have a single one.

I think both Westwood and KEA need replacing. You get a couple of midfield signings of Bertrand level quality and we'll look a hell of a lot better as a side.
