As much as I despise Russia's human rights / anti-equality / anti-freedom laws, I'm not in favour of boycotting Sochi.
I like the approach that the USA is taking, ie not sending any high ranking politicians and packing the official delegation with openly gay ex-athletes. I hope that Team GB takes the same approach.
Moving on to the sport itself............................
I see that the Jamaicans have qualified a team in the two-man Bob again this year.

I don't know whey the press are dubbing this "Cool Runnings II"; after their initial fame in 1988, the team qualified for the next four straight Olympics*.
Lindsay Vonn is out of the women's "hurtling down a mountain on two planks" competition.
Vanessa Mae will be skiing for Thailand -

(* the kind of Olympics that Russian leaders really want)
-
Jamaica they got a bobsled team.
-
If Vanessa Mae is going. Some are saying our Nige would be also be good at the Winter Olympics as he knows the 4 seasons well.
-
For a country that's not supposed to like that sort of thing, some of the men's toilets in Sochi are pretty intimate

3 to 5 medals likely no more no less
I see the skeleton , curling and ski disciplines as the chances .. all women to get medals too !!
-
Won't watch, Putin is using this as a propaganda tool for his totalitarian state where he strives for almost cult like status. Rank corruption oozes through the political class whilst millions are in poverty.
Plus it's dull.

Don't write off the men's 4 man bobsleigh who have had some very decent results this year and if Kristian Bromley can put two decent runs together he has a chance in the skeleton (fastest 2nd run of the day in a World Cup event yesterday, shite 1st run though).
I've been doing my research ready to sound all clever once it starts!
-
Dan Snow's documentary last night on the history of the Winter Olympics was pretty good.
He even pointed out that the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" hockey match between the USA and Soviet Union was not the final game. I expect that there's a lot of Americans who forget that the USA still had to beat Finland to win the Gold Medal.
-
It was ok. A bit too much focus on that horrendous ice dancing "sport" though.
Looking forward to the ski and snowboard cross events. Had never seen either until four years ago and really enjoyed them. I'll also be watching the lube, skellington and robertsleigh as well as the curling if Scotland, sorry Britain, look like they might win a medal.
-

I keep banging on about my "Competitive Arts Olympics" idea for all events that require subjective judging but will the IOC listen, will they feck.
-
They used to have something like that. In the old days you could win Olympic medals in things like poetry, painting and sculpture.
-
Olympic soggy biscuit?
-
Don't give Putin ideas.
It strikes me as surprising that someone as homophobic as him would spend a fortune to host the Winter Olympics which is, let's face it, really gay. "We have no homosexuals in Russia. Now get out of my way I'm trying to watch the man in the sequins continue his pretty ice dance".
-
Putin is like one of those Evangelical Preachers from the southern USA. Despite all his anti-gay spoutings, sooner or later you know he'll be caught in a motel with a transvestite hooker.

They want the hockey gold. There will be enormous pressure on the team to deliver.

Bugger, I meant to get up early to watch the Downhill live.
Has anyone else watched Graham Bell's guide to the course ?

-
Already on the Medal Table with not an Australian in sight 😊
-
Is there any event we're favourites for a medal? Don't care about the facts and figures just something I can watch rather than tuning in to some other god awful event hoping to see if a Brit is in it and doing well. usually aren't even if they are in the event.
I read something about a young kid on the BBC Sport site who had gone to live in Norway, and he was doing really well in that stupid ski walking one and how the Norwegians had become wary of him and he was one of the good outside shouts for a medal. So I flicked it on for a few seconds trying to catch a Brit doing something well. Frigging 62nd he finished. Tit.
-
We're expected to get medals in the women's skeleton (possibly two) and both the men's and women's curling I think.
Could have a chance in the four-man bobsleigh, the men's freestyle skiing slopestyle event and the women's short-track speed skating.
Info including relevant TV times, HERE (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/winter-olympics/24728307).

I realise when he does these he doesn't have to get up to race speed, but he does bloody well to film those with the camera and not go arse over tit.

And she's a big Villa fan to make things brilliant ! Go jenny

I watched that, it was very impressive.
The scene with her parents afterwards was lovely. They were so proud of her.

Sorry to be a killjoy but isn't this rich kids messing around in the snow? I watched the snow boarding and most of them messed up. The access to this for the majority of the population is limited.

Given the amount of snow we have in GB and access to ice slides I suppose anybody going for success really has to go abroad. That would be where funding comes in. A bit like the specialist summer games sports; sailing can be expensive, so can anything with horses!
Not suggesting trying a horse down a piste.
-
The other point about most of them falling over - ice skaters fall over when they go for that extra twizzle on a jump, as the technical term is. The snowboarders were on their last run and out to impress, trying to get those extra twizzles.
2 of them ended up cracking open their helmets instead of their heads, so it seems like an all or nothing sport, like the sliders and the jumpers.

We only really win in Olympic sports where half the world can't afford to compete - see also rowing, track cycling, equestrianism, etc.

Loads of people who are average Joes do stuff like snowboarding. My mate does it and doesn't have rich parents or anything and he has worked in shops etc all his life.

It all depends on how you prioritize your spending.
Say you live in Manchester, you can snowboard on a decent slope with jumps/obstacles for less than it'll cost you to go to watch Citeh or Utd (or even Blackburn or Bolton for that matter).

This is fantastic. The BBC have recreated some of its best Winter Olympic momnts in LEGO.

Gotta feel for the dutch guy in the speed skating, timing comes up on the board (2 decimal places) showing him as the gold medalist, then the official time comes through (3 decimal places) and demotes him to silver. That is surely the definition of heartbreak.

Chance of a medal in the womwn's slopestyle skiing in a bit.

No, she crashed!
Another run to go though.

I was watching that but the commentary is possibly the most moronic I've ever heard.

Sorry but it was commentary in the same way FanZone on Sky is commentary. Screaming in joy down the mic when a non-Brit competitor falls over isn't commentary.
And as for any of the following little gems - "She's got a face that could help bread rise"; "this feels like I've got slugs in my knickers"; "riding switch is like writing left-handed while wearing a chip hat and being attacked by seagulls", and "She's got the same birthday as me, so she's obviously very cool". Come again?!

What's snobbish about wanting to hear intelligent, impartial, informed commentary of an international sporting event? Most of the coverage I've seen so far has been embarrassing and inappropriate - the red button round-up seems to be like some sort of Clare Balding video diary. We couldn't even see footage of the curling without endless cutaways to Clare in the crowd making concerned faces to camera and stating the bleeding obvious. With all the trendy nonsense (snowboarding, FFS, with all those rails and stuff, that's not sport, it's shopping centre japes) and the inane presentation, it's like watching T4. I keep expecting the bobsleigh to be interrupted so that Miquita can interview Scouting For Girls. Just show the bloody sport, you bastards, and keep your tweeting pleas to a minimum.

I can't understand why they are showing snatches of the Winter Olympics on the Clare Balding Show? It's really odd how after sitting through her waffling on about nothing and trying to be hip and trendy and down with da kids on the snow sloop or some other trendy term, they actually then show some of the action. It's like the One Show meets the Winter Olympics.

Jaysus, I might have a quick butcher's for the lewdness in it, so.

Watched a bit of the women's Curlers, where
Scotland Britain lost to Canada. Was pretty exciting in the last end.
-
Just looked at the format for the ice hockey tournament.
There are twelve teams in the Group Stage. The top twelve go through to the knock-out stages. How pointless is that?
-
Is it really mean of me to love it when they build some British woman you've never heard of in your life and will remember for about a nano second when it's all over unless she's a Villa fan of course and she then falls on her backside? With her family all watching from the sideline

Yes. It's perfectly acceptable to laugh if an American buggers it up though.

I just saw James Woods competing in the Kickstart with skis instead of bikes event. Didn't know they let celebrities in.

Elise Christie of GB about to start in the speed-skating final. Chance of a medal.

Silver barring disqualifications. Three of the four got knocked over though so possible the result won't be allowed to stand.

That silver didn't last long. She's been demoted to fourth place. Don't think she did much wrong, not sure if we're allowed to appeal.

Hardly the best way of building up the tension though is it knowing that even if you lose all your group games 10-0, you still go through?

I quite fancy a go on the Skeleton Winter event, or head first down the ice on a tea-tray as it should be called.
Wouldn't fancy going feet-first (Luge) as much though.
-
I would quite fancy a go on Amy Williams if that's an option.
-
GOLD! For Lizzy Yarnold in the skellington toboggan. Well done that woman.
-
Yep - fantastic stuff.
-
I thought she won it on the third run, but it turns out the last one was the top time as well. If she hadn't have whacked the walls she would have won by over a second. But great work from Lizzie Yarnold, it was a brilliant competition from her.
As an aside, do you have to be beautiful to be a skeleton athlete? None will slot in above Amy Williams for me, but I haven't spotted any I would kick out of bed for eating crisps.

Chaos in the Women's Super-G
http://deadspin.com/super-g-course-a-disaster-18-different-skiers-fail-t-1523434692
Why the hell did they put a jump into a slalom course ?
-
Not sure what you are saying? Super-G is not slalom, it is downhill with gates. They usually use a slightly shorter version of the downhill course.
-
Having been downgraded from Silver to 4th the other day, our Speed Skater got disqualified for not finishing today. All because the one foot was marginally over the sideline. I hope she wins Gold in the 1k because the officials seem to have it in for her. Someone should explain the concept of 'common sense' to them.

The fact Team GB didn't appeal suggests it's not that controversial. I'm sure that particular rule is there for a reason.
-
I agree with the second decision, she knew the rules before the start and should've concentrated. The first one seems harsh. Another lady seemed to make the initial contact, three of them got knocked over and only our girl got DQ'd. Watched it two or three times and can't see why she was penalised more than anyone else.
-
Not sure what you are saying? Super-G is not slalom, it is downhill with gates. They usually use a slightly shorter version of the downhill course.
Super G is a slalom. "Super Giant Slalom".
A large number of the failures were because of a jump that, per the commentators, the competitors were not used to dealing with.
IMO, there's no need for Super-G. It seems a "false" event, neither a proper slalom or a proper downhill.
-
But it must be good it has "Super" in the name!

The word slalom merely means there are gates. Super-G is essentially a downhill race with gates, usually on the same downhill course. There are very few Super-G specialists, most the competitors are from the downhill field.
I don't disagree with it being neither a slalom or a downhill, it is definitely caught between the two disciplines - but I think there is room for it.

The women won, they play again this afternoon. They go through if they win or if either Japan or Switzerland fail to win. If they lose and both Japan and Switzerland win they play-off against Japan for a semi spot.
The men have just lost but luckily so did Norway. GB play-off against Norway for a semi spot tomorrow.
-
Scratch that, if the British women lose and Japan win, they go into play-offs regardless of the outcome of the Swiss match, according to the BBC.

Is this why the Americans don't bother with curling? In their world of straight forward wins and losses this set up would blow their minds!
-
Now, according to the BBC, the British women curlers are through to the semis regardless of their result against Denmark (currently winning 3-2). I wish they'd make their minds up!

All the pictures on BBC of Eve on the ice seems to show that Muirhead is something she is good at.
I'll get my coat.

There's plenty of times when the Americans don't do "straight forward wins and losses". In fact the NFL playoffs and NCAA Basketball tornament are just about the only times that they do straight knock out.
Don't get me started on the "double elimination" system that's used in NCAA Baseball.

These games are confined to the rich countries of the world so not a good representation of olympic ideals of brother/sisterhood and unity. And there is far too much posing, acting and make up involved for these to be a true test of athleticism despite some daredevil stuff on the slopes.

Well wow....despite these being elitist games there are some aspects I can admire!

The women curlers really made a hash of that last match and now have to play the unbeaten Canadians. Bronze at best it loks like.
-

Don't focus on the 0 losses, being unbeaten in a tournament like this isn't good. Eve herself went unbeaten at the recent European championships and lost in the final.
Eve had a shot to win against the Canadians, admittedly it was hard but not many teams have had that opportunity and the Canadians missed very makeable shots when put under pressure. I think Jennifer Jones would rather play one of the other two teams in a semi-final.
Edit: reading some Canadian curling forums (I play the game, I'm allowed to be sad enough to look at them!!) and there is a some consternation at the thought that Eve lost on purpose to get Canada in the semi rather than Sweden. All quite funny.

Watched the Snow boarding snow cross before work this morning, that was ace. Shame it was Beavis & Butthead commentating though.

The women curlers really made a hash of that last match and now have to play the unbeaten Canadians. Bronze at best it loks like.
Thanks for that insight. I couldn't believe they blew a 3 point lead in the last end so didn't fancy their chances. Sounds like we've got the Canadians quaking!

I've quite enjoyed the BBC commentary.
I've watched some of the events on German TV and their commentators can suck the excitement and joy out of any event.

British women losing 5-4 to favourites Canada with one end to go. Need to pick up at least 1 stone to force a play-off end against the hammer, so very unlikely.

Aye, they did all they could. Only way they could have caused more trouble would have been to have a shot at the front of the 4 ft circle if we were sitting second shot but we weren't so forcing the draw was as good as it could have been.
Switzerland played their best game of the competition and still lost the other semi so hopefully they'll not be at that level tomorrow.
We go again.
:D

Russians losing 3-1 to Finland with one period left in the hockey. Putin will not be happy at all if they don't turn this around.

Will be a big, big shock if they go out at the quarter-final stage.

I had it down as 3-1 in a predictions league I'm in. The only problem is that I had it 3-1 the other way!

Yeeeeesss!!!
British men into the curling final.
If there's one reason to oppose Scottish independence it's because it will ruin our chances of Olympic curling glory.
-
Quite enjoyed that, considering we looked like we'd blown it with 2 stones left. Found myself giving it a big "yessss" at the end!

After that defeat, Ovie and co need to get the hell out of Sochi and back to the safety of the NHL asap

If I was a Russian ice hockey player I wouldn't let any of my drinks out of my sight for a while.

Time for the future Mrs Maria Redsox to dump that loser Ovetchkin.

British ladies level at 5-5 with Switzerland going into the 10th and final end, but we have the Hammer. Advantage GB.
-
And bronze it is for the women in Curling :)

Great match. Some gorgeous eyes on show too lol!

It's Sweden's Christina Bertrup for me. I could watch close-ups of her curling all day long.

Just install a webcam in her loo...

A bit harsh but the Women's Swedish Curling captain reminds me of Miss Man from 'Scary Movie'.

Canada win the women's ice hockey after America do a bottle job Villa would've been proud of from two goals up.

I watched the end of the third period and saw the tying goal.
However, I clean forgot to switch back for Overtime
-
Not looking good in the curling, five-one down to the Moose Fuckers after three ends.
-
Well i'm qualified enough after watching curling for a week and a half to say that Britain are playing absolutely horrifically.
-
At least we have the advantage in the 4th end - score a 3 and we're right back in it :D
-
Getting farcical now. I accept they are nervous, but bloody hell.

They didn't play well, they'll be the first to admit that but come on. It wasn't farcical, give the Canadians credit, they were just brutal and were going straight for the jugular from the off. It's the way they play and we couldn't match it.
Such is the strength in depth, to get to the Olympics the Canadians have to beat all the other top teams in Canada. As a curling competition, The Roar of the Rings as it is called, is the best tournament in the world but it means that these guys are on top form arriving at the Olympics. Any of the top 5 teams in Canada could win this they are that strong.

I prefer Beaver Hunters!

That sounds like an upcoming programme on The History Channel, just after Pawn Stars.
-
Elise Christie knocked over as she was about to qualify for the final. Not sure if they might let her back into the final or not.
-
Christie penalised and eliminated? No idea what she's supposed to have done wrong this time. She's had a disastrous Olympics, I can't see why she's been penalised for getting tripped up by somebody else?
-
Shocking refereeing, anyone could see the Chinese took her out and didn't look.
-
The fact they're having to speculate about why exactly she's been penalised suggests that it was a strange decision.
-
I have just watched the highlights of the race and thought she barged the Chinese gal on the back straight before the corner. Whether that is legal I wouldn't know but as she was done for slipping into someone else accidentally in the first race, I would say no.
-
There is some argy-bargy allowed so what went on prior to the fall was legal. No idea what she's meant to have done wrong, it was a ridiculous decision.

The Canadians did play well, but didn't really need to exert themselves that much when we were constantly failing to get past our own guards, rolling simple shots through the back of the house and turning twos into ones.
I think at one stage, Andrew's had an accuracy percentage of 38% (around 5th/6th end). All 4 of our players were so far below their usual standard in this tournament it was crazy.

What about the attempted rugby tackle by the Chinese woman just before the finish line in the final. I can't believe that's allowed, is it ?
-
The Chinese woman was disqualified too.

I'm talking about the final, not the semi
-
Oophs, sorry. I was in too much of a sulk to watch the final.
-
I lost interest after Elise was screwed by the officials for a third time. Such poor officiating for an Olympics.

Well surely for at least two of them it was good officiating as she did take out two others and didn't "skate" over the finish line.

Yes, exactly.
-
What pisses me off is they bring in rules to stop people like Eddie and Eric competing in the Olympics, and then let twats like these in.
-
Them seem to be a lot less strict for the winter games. See Vanessa Mae as an example.
