Donacein on the bench.

Great to see. The lad's class.
Strongest line up we could have hoped for. No excuses. Let's start the new year with three much needed points.

1-3 Villa

Huge boost to have Vlaar back and benteke - massive lift - bacuna in midfield will be interesting - worried about luna at left back and Weimann is very lucky to keep his place .

It really is an enormous lift though to see Vlaar and benteke play.

I've never really seen the fuss about Weimann to be honest. Had we stuck it out with Delfouneso as much as we have with Andi, we might have a better player on our hands. I think Fonzie had more natural ability, but Weimann has the right attitude and work-rate.

I certainly don't think Weimann is worthy of all the fuss that happened in the summer regarding him signing a new deal. He's probably getting paid very good money at the moment. But the fact is he's a player who should be a bit fitter, and his touch is pretty poor.

He's been held back a lot though, by being played as a right sided forward, as opposed to up through the middle. He's an out and out CF. How good potentially, who knows? As a wide player he'll only ever be mediocre.

Right now he does need a rest though. But I suspect a large part of his inclusion is that we're getting by mostly on work-rate at the moment, and he'll offer that.

How can a player who needs to be a bit fitter get in the team on his work rate?

Gardner needs a loan away to get fit properly and test his fitness. 2 months in the Championship would be ideal.

I think this is the final year of this contract so the next few months will be huge as to whether he gets another deal - its a shame he has suffered such injuries .

Let's hope vlaar and benteke are genuinely fit

It's actually my strongest side bar Clark in for baker. But that's on paper and plenty of players are out of form and potentially not fit

But if they are, and looking at the Sunderland back line - Roberge and diakite at centre back - and I'm optimistic we can win this . .

We need to go out all guns blazing at Sunderland and quieten the hone crowd.

Get ourselves into an unassailable lead and bring Benteke off after 60.

We'll then have just under two weeks to get Vlaar and Benteke in shape for Arsenal.

UTV I'm feeling surprisingly optimistic.  0-3. Come on you lions!!!!!

He clearly does not rate Gardner?  Another one of our youth 'talents' that has fallen by the wayside...

He's had two career-threatening injuries. Saying 'talents' like that is totally out of order.

I am well aware that he has had those injuries.  If he can't get on the bench even with our injuries, suspensions etc then clearly Lambert doesn't rate him.   There was nothing 'out of order' with my post.

Or, after being injured for months it's going to take some time for him to be back to the level of match fitness needed to play.

I disagree entirely. By putting talents in quotes you seemed to indicate that this was never the case, which as I pointed out was unfair given the injuries he's had.

It's entirely possible that given his current fitness level and with two key players returning he just didn't make the final 18. What objectionable in your post is that inverted commas around talent which to all suggests it's his talent you are questioning and ignoring the fact that his emergence as a key player has not been hampered by two very serious setbacks.

We've seen Lowton and Westwood lose form this year, and both be dropped for a bit. Yet Weimann.. who has been a passenger for most parts of every game continues to start.

I'm surprised Weimann is playing.  He looks so low on confidence. We have to close them down better and really get a grip on their runs especially Giaccherini!

He's a Villa legend in my eyes already because of his loyalty and some of the critical goals he's scored. He might not be the best player to ever wear our colours but when it's all said and done, and he'll never leave, he'll be a legend in the proper sense.

it's a marked improvement on where we have been. It will take a few games and everyone fit to get the chemistry back properly. The important thing today will be to not take our foot off the pedal and take our chances. A goal for the big man is must just so he remembers what it feels like again.

Baker and Luna are a heart attack combo they really are

I think that's one of the reasons Luna has looked worse than he did at the beginning of the season - because he's got absolutely no confidence in his left CB

Can't see Sunderland scoring. They're tidy in midfield, having all the ball but up front there's nothing. Fletchers a player long past his best now and was only ever average. No cutting edge at all. Think we might have the 3 points here.

I've been arguing for a while that Bacuna and Delph are the natural midfielders in front of a holding midfielder. Both have skills, energy and a pass. They can also both score goals.

A better showing this afternoon, albeit helped out by Cattermole's crapness. As ever, it's our lack of composure and passing in the midfield that will do for us (if anything does, I'm confident we'll get something out of this).

We're winning, but if we're honest we know we don't deserve it. Our goal was the result of a hideous defensive mistake, and we've had so little of the ball again it's kind of hard to believe. The defence looks much better with Vlaar back, though, even if Clark instead of Baker would make everything infinitely better.

We are looking better but we still seem incapable of retaining the ball for more than 2 passes.  Luna is abominably bad and Baker out of his depth.  CB looks 75% which is a massive improvement on the 35% we've seen recently.  Gabby took his goal really well albeit a gift from Cattlemole.  Bacuna looks good going forward.

It suits us while we are one up as we can counter at pace.  We need another (and possibly another).
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread

Its not the lack of possession per se that bothers me, its the way we drop so deep, what happened to that pressing we did at the start of the season?

On the plus side, I think the Delph-Westy-Bacuna midfield has a nice balance to it
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on January 01, 2014, 03:50:54 PM
Typically woeful again, but Sunderland look hopeless in attack. That goal just seems to have knocked seven shades out of them. They look a beaten team already, even despite having 75% of the ball.

Luna and Baker look bloody awful though so there's a chance we might gift them something back, but off their own back they don't look like scoring. We're the same though. We're just waiting for errors to pounce on. The lack of any skill or touch in our players is frightening though.

Second half, hopefully Benteke will get a goal. I think it'll transform him. He's had some nice touches today, he just seems worryingly fearful of the penalty box at the minute. He's dropping far too deep. That said, our midfield is so poor he's got little option but to keep coming short if he wants a touch of the ball.
Has Westwood touched the ball today?

I'm convinced our inability to keep the ball is not to do with the midfield three, but the back four - their movement and decision making is utterly awful at times. Oh for an Okore to play with Vlaar and encourage us to play a little bit.

Taking into the conditions, I'm more than pleased with the first 45 minutes. Key factor is the midfield and defence working together as a unit. Not once have I been concerned about Sunderland scoring, it's all very controlled by us despite them having plenty of the ball. Whisper it but we're actually putting a few passes together. Best of all is we're giving Sunderland very little time on the ball.

So far, so good.

Ki bossing midfield for them , if Swansea don't want him I'd take him looks class.

26% is pretty poor again but at mo we are winning so can't complain too much.
He did at Villa Park too. Looks a really good player - very comfortable on the ball

Mrs Rob is South Korean and we saw him play at Ricoh during Olympics - a class act. Seems to have had a fall out with Laudrup.

I can understand with Benteke returning whey he would reunite the front three that did so well last season. That said, it isn't working, and a change is needed. What we need is a poacher type forward to play with Benteke and Gabby. Weimann isn't it unfortunately.

My 10,000th post. Would be nice if it was a Villa goal, instead of which it's a penalty to West Brom. Sums us up really!

That little spell of possession showed what a bit of composure can do. We didn't rush, we weren't flustered. We can do it. But 30 seconds per game isn't enough. A cool, experienced head in the middle and at the back would make a hell of a difference in helping us keep the ball better.

Gabby is twice the size of Colback and fell over like he'd been shot after having barged Colback over. Yellows for both is fair

I think Weimann just does " running around a lot' that's his training. He then reflects that perfectly at the Game!   Why doesn't the Coach just tell him to calm down! and use a bit of brain!
