Benteke and Vlaar both start
-
Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Luna, Westwood, Bacuna, Weimann, Delph, Agbonlahor, Benteke.
-
Subs: Steer, Sylla, El Ahmadi, Kozak, Albrighton, Tonev, Donacien
-
Hallelujah!
-
Think we will get at least a point now. Great news.
-
Can't believe Weimann is starting. WHY?
-
Good news, we desperately needed these two back.
-
I would rather Albrighton start than Andi
-
Weimann has to be the luckiest footballer in the world. Favourite is not the word.
-
Donacein on the bench.
Great to see. The lad's class.
Strongest line up we could have hoped for. No excuses. Let's start the new year with three much needed points.
1-3 Villa
-
See the chuckle brothers are on the bench again, surely one of them & get Gardner on there...
-
How much would you give for a Benteke goal early doors to give him his confidence back!
-
He clearly does not rate Gardner? Another one of our youth 'talents' that has fallen by the wayside...
-
I didn't expect to see those two in the team.
-

He's had two career-threatening injuries. Saying 'talents' like that is totally out of order.
-
Huge boost to have Vlaar back and benteke - massive lift - bacuna in midfield will be interesting - worried about luna at left back and Weimann is very lucky to keep his place .
It really is an enormous lift though to see Vlaar and benteke play.
-
I didn't expect to see those two in the team.
I hope they are both fit
-
Happy New Year everyone!! Let's hope we are not rushing these two back as much as we absolutely need them. Here's to a successful day and my sincere best wishes to all of brothers and sisters at H&V for 2014.
-
I've never really seen the fuss about Weimann to be honest. Had we stuck it out with Delfouneso as much as we have with Andi, we might have a better player on our hands. I think Fonzie had more natural ability, but Weimann has the right attitude and work-rate.
I certainly don't think Weimann is worthy of all the fuss that happened in the summer regarding him signing a new deal. He's probably getting paid very good money at the moment. But the fact is he's a player who should be a bit fitter, and his touch is pretty poor.
He's been held back a lot though, by being played as a right sided forward, as opposed to up through the middle. He's an out and out CF. How good potentially, who knows? As a wide player he'll only ever be mediocre.
Right now he does need a rest though. But I suspect a large part of his inclusion is that we're getting by mostly on work-rate at the moment, and he'll offer that.

And the same to you Toronto - lets hope we can get off to a winning start.

How can a player who needs to be a bit fitter get in the team on his work rate?
-
Gardner needs a loan away to get fit properly and test his fitness. 2 months in the Championship would be ideal.

I think this is the final year of this contract so the next few months will be huge as to whether he gets another deal - its a shame he has suffered such injuries .

Agree with most of that. Not sure about Delfouneso though, just don't think it ever would've happened for him here.
-
Weimann starting.

-
Pleased to see donacien on the bench today too.
-
Let's hope vlaar and benteke are genuinely fit
It's actually my strongest side bar Clark in for baker. But that's on paper and plenty of players are out of form and potentially not fit
But if they are, and looking at the Sunderland back line - Roberge and diakite at centre back - and I'm optimistic we can win this . .
-
@SAFCofficial: #safc team to play @AVFCOfficial: Mannone, Celustka, Bardsley, Diakite, Roberge, Cattermole (C), Ki, Colback, Ji, Giaccherini, Fletcher.
-
We need to go out all guns blazing at Sunderland and quieten the hone crowd.
Get ourselves into an unassailable lead and bring Benteke off after 60.
We'll then have just under two weeks to get Vlaar and Benteke in shape for Arsenal.
UTV I'm feeling surprisingly optimistic. 0-3. Come on you lions!!!!!
-
He clearly does not rate Gardner? Another one of our youth 'talents' that has fallen by the wayside...
He's had two career-threatening injuries. Saying 'talents' like that is totally out of order.
I am well aware that he has had those injuries. If he can't get on the bench even with our injuries, suspensions etc then clearly Lambert doesn't rate him. There was nothing 'out of order' with my post.
-

Without tempting fate that team looks truly shit.

Or, after being injured for months it's going to take some time for him to be back to the level of match fitness needed to play.
-
Great news. But Lambo will be without the 'spine of the team/ strong players' excuse should the match not go well. Hope he does not need it, though. Come on, you Villa boys!

I disagree entirely. By putting talents in quotes you seemed to indicate that this was never the case, which as I pointed out was unfair given the injuries he's had.

It's entirely possible that given his current fitness level and with two key players returning he just didn't make the final 18. What objectionable in your post is that inverted commas around talent which to all suggests it's his talent you are questioning and ignoring the fact that his emergence as a key player has not been hampered by two very serious setbacks.
-
Come on, fellas. Are the hangovers hurting? Let's start with a happy new year.

I rate Gardner, I really do. I am just surprised that Lambert cannot find a space for him on the bench given the current situ. He may not be fully fit, but I would rather see him come on after 75 mins than Tonev. Anyway, let's move on. Come on villa!
-
I think that's about out best side apart from baker (Clark). Must win today and we should have a good chance of doing so looking at that Sunderland team.
-
Forgive my ignorance but who is Donacien and how does anybody know how good he is?
-
He's a defender. Very promising young talent.
-
O'Shea & Brown both missing for them? Weak defence against Benteke, Gabby & Weimann. Changed my mind, a 1-2 win.
-
Forgive my ignorance but who is Donacien and how does anybody know how good he is?
Donacien looked an outstanding talent in the youth team last season. Whether he's ready for the Premier League remains to be seen.
-
McInally having to apologise on Sports Saturday because he keeps referring to Villa as 'we' when previewing the game.
Top man!
-
I would rather Albrighton start than Andi
Seconded..
-
Ok - peeps (sorry for not being more active). Happy newyear! heres to more points than we can imagine (15 over the year).
I need help, as I am hungovered: do I :
1. drink nothing
2. drink some of my variety of beers that i have on fridge (30+ in quantity)
3. drink wine
(ps. no sambuca on storage)
-
McInally having to apologise on Sports Saturday because he keeps referring to Villa as 'we' when previewing the game.
Top man!
Hero!
-
Can't believe Weimann is starting. WHY?
Probably because of all the players he seems to link / blend best with Benteke.
Either that, or Lambert is desperately seeking last season's alchemy.
-
Forgive my ignorance but who is Donacien and how does anybody know how good he is?

Yep, and looked excellent in pre-season too.
-
Team looks stronger today on paper. Good to see Vlaar and Benteke back.
Come on!!!

After two career threatening injuries, putting him in before he's physically ready for it would be a sure-fire way to completely finish his career.
-
I hope Vlaar and Benteke are fit enough, the last thing we need to do is rush them back and then lose them for even longer.
-

Pretty much everyone's concern. Both are critical players.
-
Happy New Year one and all! Come on Villa, if fingers crossed we can get a win here.
-
McInally having to apologise on Sports Saturday because he keeps referring to Villa as 'we' when previewing the game.
Top man!
Hero!
Is Kozak the new McInally? - very similar playing style I'd suggest.
-
Where is Helenius again?
-
I would rather Albrighton start than Andi
Seconded..
Thirded. Albrighton can beat a man and get a decent cross in to feed Benteke. Surprised to see Weimann get the nod over him

Different players. I certainly don't ever see Kozak dribbling the ball from inside his own half through several players and scoring?

I dunno - I can't imagine him running the length of the field beating five players as mcinally did against millwall - both different types to me but valuable assets in their own right.
-
Happy New Year to all, Come on you Villa, lets get something out this game today.

Hmmm, maybe both you and TV are right; perhaps my memory of McInally is defective!
HNY to you by the way.
-
Weather looks pretty foul
-
Cattermole is a dirty prick in he?
-
CB looks more up for it today. Hope that lasts for 90 mins.
-
Not sure if I can ask for a link here or not?? Could someone provide me with one if poss, maybe via PM? Thank you and Happy New Year...

-
Awful defending by Baker leaving Fletcher completely unmarked.
-
Dreadful mistake by Weimann. Should have cost us
-
happy new year
finished work
ok see weimann give ball away
whys he playing , love to see albrighton provide crosses for benteke
nice to see vlaar back
-
Weimann just played us bang into trouble
-
Sums us up there. Weimann misplaces a 3 fucking yard pass. 3 yards.
-
Stupid unforced error and we;re lucky not to be one down. We need to cut that shit out.
-
Shocking from Weimann. Should be 1-0.
-
Christmas was last week, the time for handing out gifts has passed, Weimann,
-
Jesus Christ, how shit was that?
Terrible from Weimann and horrible positioning by Baker !
-
Fuckin hell Wiemann.
You can accept mistakes, but then to just stand and watch is criminal.
-
We look so poor its scary
-
Luna..... If it's possible, he is worse than Bennet at his worst.
-
We've seen Lowton and Westwood lose form this year, and both be dropped for a bit. Yet Weimann.. who has been a passenger for most parts of every game continues to start.
-
Sunderland are trying to play football. I've no idea what we're trying to do.
-
I'm surprised Weimann is playing. He looks so low on confidence. We have to close them down better and really get a grip on their runs especially Giaccherini!
-
How can you make so many simple errors week after week?
-
Really starting to dislike Baker.
-
Really starting to dislike Baker.
Baker is a 2nd division defender. Big, clumsy, whole hearted donkey.
-
Really starting to dislike Baker.
Not good enough at all
-
Weimann's needed a kick up the arse for at least a couple of months now.
-
How are we playing ?
-
Midfield looking a little weak. We are just looking very nervous. Rabbits in the head lights!
-
How are we playing ?
We're more existing than playing to be honest.
-
Really starting to dislike Baker.
Baker is a 2nd division defender. Big, clumsy, whole hearted donkey.
Perfectly put.
-
Weimann's needed a kick up the arse for at least a couple of months now.
Weimann needs a bench under his arse.
-
Another quality assist.
-
ggooaaalllllllllllllllllllllll
-
Gabby!!!!
-
Gabbbbbbbbbbyyyyyyyy
-
Get in!!
-
Goal - Gabby
Get in
-
Fuck yes Gabby!
-
Gabby, one nil. Wahoooooooo
-
Really starting to dislike Baker.
Strange one really, he reached a reasonable level of performance last season but has regressed massively. Think it started after that nutty own goal at Reading.
-
YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS. Gabby from fuck up by Cattermole
-
GAAAABBBBYYYYY.
Now come on Villa. Show some fucking belief.
-
gabby, our talisman again
-
goal
-
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!! Gabby! Cattermole shattermole.
-
Happy new year everyone and yessss!!!!
Bit fortunate but who cares!
-
only 31% possession and winning
possession means nothing ;)
-
Get in
-
Gabby!
-
Nice one cattermole - another 3 and he may need a tissue again :)
-
Another first half goal YYYEEEESSSSS
-
Thank you based gabby!
-
worse than us!!
-
Gabby ",
-
Don't that it matters, but was it a good goal?
-
GABBY! Thank you!
-
Gabby! Two really composed finishes in the last two games. Fucking hell.
An absolute gift though, because we've been typically shite. That will hit Sunderland hard I think.
-
I like Gabby, looks so muscular in our kit as well.
-
A gift
-
Long time to cling in here!
-
Get in Gabby!! And thank you to my Villa Breadbins
-
HA! Brilliant from Cattermole. He must hate playing us.
-
Get in, Gabby!
What was the goal like?
-
COmedy defending there but we got away with it
-
ffs whats luna doing
-
Another good finish from Gabby.
Southampton, Swansea, Southampton.....
-
Good work from Vlaar there.
-
Let's hope they've learned from the Swansea game and do not try and survive on that goal.
-
Comedy defending from Villa
-
Don't that it matters, but was it a good goal?
A gift. Cattermole with a misplaced pass at the back and Gabby was on it. Similar to Kozaks goal the other week.
-
What the hell was Luna doing there?
-
Awful from Luna again. Nearly 1-1.
-
Get da fuck in. Now go on with it Villa, none of this back foot shite...COME ON!
-
settle down boys don't make and silly mistakes!
-
Happy New Year everyone......things have taken a turn????
-
well done bacuna
better position in team looks better
-
What a great run Bacuna
-
Luna is going to give me heart failure
-
Played Bacuna
-
Seriously Luna is the worst full back in the history of the premier league. Just a total liability.
Great run form Bacuna
-
Bacuna, nearly goal of the season.
-
... That will hit Sunderland hard I think.
Here's hoping ...
-
Unlucky Leandro. We certainly need his pace in midfield at the moment.
-
Going back, Luna is a liability
-
Fuckin brilliant Bacuna
-
good move bacuna
-
Villa fans in great voice.
-
I like Gabby, looks so muscular in our kit as well.
Would you like a tissue?
-
defend the Corner!
-
Silly challenge.
-
Wow, he actually stayed on his feet.
-
Lambert seems to be the only one who thinks Weimann should start. Villa look low on confidence and Lambert doesn't seem to have a clue how to arrest this worrying decline. What happened to the vibrant Villa that showed up at Arsenal and Chelsea in the first two matches of the season?
-
Baker and Luna are seriously poor - it's little wonder the confidence levels are low with these two in the team.
-
I like Gabby, looks so muscular in our kit as well.
ok ;)
-
Gabby scores some really vital goals for us when we are down. Not the greatest player but a true Villan who cares.
Don't we have a youth team left back? He can't be worse than Luna.
-
If Norman Wisdom played football, he would play exactly like Luna. For comedy effect, Luna is golden but as a footballer he is a hapless liability
-
I'd go 4-5-1 now to stifle them like we did in the second half against Swansea
-
Jesus we are going to concede if we keep this shit up. KEEP THE FUCKING BALL!
-
Shay Given and Zat Knight conspiring against Bolton apparently.
-
Luna has been dreadful - pretty open game this , could be a few goals today .
-
Gabby scores some really vital goals for us when we are down. Not the greatest player but a true Villan who cares.
Don't we have a youth team left back? He can't be worse than Luna.
He's a Villa legend in my eyes already because of his loyalty and some of the critical goals he's scored. He might not be the best player to ever wear our colours but when it's all said and done, and he'll never leave, he'll be a legend in the proper sense.
-
What wrong with Edna Stevens at left back , better than Luna
-

Totally agree. Long live Gabs!
-
Now, I love that we're winning and everything, but there's no doubt that it's totally undeserved at the moment.
-
What wrong with Edna Stevens at left back , better than Luna
Loan spell has been extended.
-
Baker! FFS.
-
What wrong with Edna Stevens at left back , better than Luna
Just extended his Doncaster loan .
-
Jesus we are going to concede if we keep this shit up. KEEP THE FUCKING BALL!
BBC give us 25% possession - ominous against Blunderland who are not exactly renowned for their possession football.
-
Baker truly is a liability
-
Silly free kick fucking no need baker booked
-
Excellent ref.
-
Ooops my mistake
-
good shot gabby
-
Brilliant move.
-
Class layoff from the big man.
-
Lovely link up benteke and gabby.
-
We're going to need 3 to win here today I reckon.
-
Should have gone for goal there gabby.
-
(http://i.minus.com/iYK3PuvorePso.gif)
-
better on break
-
They are having the possession, but we are doing ok here.
1 goal and 2 very good chances.
I think Bacuna is having a great game, doing his defensive stuff and good going forward.
-
Benteke looks much more himself
-
Playing much better going forward on the counter-attack. It's the only thing we know how to do.
-
Nathan Baker truly is the worst CB to play for us in the last 5 years. I'm struggling to think of a worse player technically, who starts for his side in the Premier League
-

Proper team player.
-
least it isnt dull like palace game
which isnt hard of course
-
Fuck sake Baker
-
You can just sense with Benteke that a goal will transform him. He really needs one. A few nice touches so far though. He looks a little brighter.
-

Lee Cattermole.

A stalker or a smirker lol
-
wrong ball CB there
-
Thanks, Legion. Love that Gabby fella.
-
I do like Bacuna. Works hard, and has some genuine ability too.
-
We look a proper threat for the first time in weeks
-
having chances here - sundrland cock ups
-
Should be 2 up here at least - benteke and gabby looking very good.
-
Whisper it very very quietly without wishing to put the kiss of death on it, but we are playing ok here.
-
Whats with the shit passing choices around their penalty area?
-

He can pass 10 yards - that first touch for the goal was classic Baker!
-
We look much more 'up for it'
-
Can someone please remind our players to move for throw ins?
-
get luna off - we will win it then
-
Fookin hell their defence looks worse than ours!
-
This is actually a real good game of football.
-
Whats with the shit passing choices around their penalty area?
it's a marked improvement on where we have been. It will take a few games and everyone fit to get the chemistry back properly. The important thing today will be to not take our foot off the pedal and take our chances. A goal for the big man is must just so he remembers what it feels like again.
-
Some of the buildup decision making has been a bit slow at times. Tekkers just needs to be thinking more 'first time'. Gabby and Bacuna working their arses off.
-
Fulham level against West Ham...Sidwell
-
Baker and Luna are a heart attack combo they really are
-
Baker & Luna. Isn't that a solicitors in Swaffham.
-
Love Delph.
Not as muscular as Gabby but I still love him.
-
Baker and Luna are a heart attack combo they really are
I think that's one of the reasons Luna has looked worse than he did at the beginning of the season - because he's got absolutely no confidence in his left CB
-
Afternoon chaps, hows it going?
-
Bacuna in his best position I think!
-
Afternoon chaps, hows it going?
better than normal. Not playing badly and we are playing a team as careless as we have been in recent weeks.
-
Delph is everywhere at the moment.
-

very true

Not us playing well?
-
Afternoon chaps, hows it going?
better than normal. Not playing badly and we are playing a team as careless as we have been in recent weeks.
Blimey, they must be bad...
-
We have just started to sit deep again. That switch has been flicked.
We need to push the game out
-
Liking the As It Stands league table right now. Especially as 'Pool oughta thrash Hull.
-
Love Delph.
Not as muscular as Gabby but I still love him.
Looks the part in the away kit I think ;)
-
having chances here - sundrland cock ups
Not us playing well?
were playing ok - but sunderland have helped us sometimes ;)
-
We have noticeably started to sit in
-
Can't see Sunderland scoring. They're tidy in midfield, having all the ball but up front there's nothing. Fletchers a player long past his best now and was only ever average. No cutting edge at all. Think we might have the 3 points here.
-
Weimann off please...
-
We're not going to hold out here unless we get hold of the ball.
-
We will not hold this we need a second and third here!
-
Bacuna in his best position I think!
I've been arguing for a while that Bacuna and Delph are the natural midfielders in front of a holding midfielder. Both have skills, energy and a pass. They can also both score goals.

I can see them scoring but also can see us scoring again - there will be goals to come .
-

Liverpool now one up

They will score twice today at least the way we are defending
-
Weimann really is struggling.
-
We will not hold this we need a second and third here!
Defo.

Maybe but you never know with Baker and Luna in Keystone kop mode.
-
If you're the Villa manager, and have one sub left to make and your options to take off include an injured Baker, and a close to getting sent off Delph.. who would you bring on for Weimann?
-
Well they don't look like scoring against us, but I wish we wouldn't keep giving them the chance to with our ball-hating attitude to football.

That's the trouble. If we gift them something on a plate, as they did with us, then they just might. But they look woefully short of confidence in the final third.
I'm just sensing Benteke might net one today. Well...more hoping than sensing.
-
Albrighton. ^
-
Who's the scot commentating?
He's getting on my nerves, keeps going on about 'contact'.
Since when was football deemed a non contact sport.
-
Pfffftt....a yellow for that!!!
-
We will not hold this we need a second and third here!
Defo.
One is not likely to be enough as we found out at Swansea
-
Silly foul by Bacuna
-
If you're the Villa manager, and have one sub left to make and your options to take off include an injured Baker, and a close to getting sent off Delph.. who would you bring on for Weimann?
Heskey.
-
like to see albrighton on HT for weimann
Luna - well what can we do ?
-

I would probably give Albrighton a chance.
If Bacuna does one more stupid foul he will be off!
-
Bacuna was going to foul him as soon as he lost the ball. The booking was 2 tackles in 60 seconds.
-
We will not hold this we need a second and third here!
Defo.
good call, straight swap for Luna? We need a goal scorer
-
Pfffftt....a yellow for that!!!
Should have had one fro the previous foul and got warned by ref next time it's a yellow. Silly foul
-
Baker saves us!!
-
chance for sunderland there
block by CB

Defo.
One is not likely to be enough as we found out at Swansea
The pessimist in me thinks 2 might not be enough.
-
We are inviting them to score. KEEP THE FUCKING BALL! Jesus.
-
Fucking hell...
dropped right off now
-
Living very dangerously, as we do.
-
they are gettting into this
-
Pfffftt....a yellow for that!!!
The ref had warned him twice already to be fair.

Heskey.
Why didn't Barry take the penalty?
-
ooops it was CB,
Now calm down lads, keep the ball for three mins, that's all!
-
This is the most frustrating thing about us. Why it happens is a task for a shrink to sit the players down and ask them why they do this?
-
No convinction in any of Sunderlands attempted finishing. Cattermoles all but killed them today, short of a miracle half time team talk from Poyet.
-
Kevin Nolan sent off for West Ham

Eagles 0 canaries 1
-
they are gettting into this
Seems like we are letting them in.
-
they are gettting into this
Yep, we starting sitting deep and letting them come on to us from about 15 mins ago.
We are playing a dangerous game now.
-
Palace level against Norwich so other results going well for us so far
-
Does anyone else think wet wet wet had some good tunes?
-
No possession again
No composure in the centre of the park
-

Sounds kinky
-
Does anyone else think wet wet wet had some good tunes?
No but my favourite cheese is goats cheese.
-
Win or lose, it is embarrassing having so little of the ball every game.
-
Does anyone else think wet wet wet had some good tunes?
This is becoming a very camp start to the new year in some quarters...
-
phew!! hung on. We really need a couple more!!
-
ok, HT let's regroup now.
-
well were winning clean sheet
im happy
second half will have sweaty ass and its not gabbys muscular body neither thats doing it
-
Westwood was a great passer last season, what has happened to him?
-

Mmmmmmm, a man who wears his cagoule with pride
-

Wensleydale for me, as it is or with bits of apricot in it
-
Afternoon chaps and Happy New Year to you all!
A better showing this afternoon, albeit helped out by Cattermole's crapness. As ever, it's our lack of composure and passing in the midfield that will do for us (if anything does, I'm confident we'll get something out of this).
-
Does anyone else think wet wet wet had some good tunes?
No but my favourite cheese is goats cheese.
Not sure what my half time biscuit will be.
-
Half time, 0-1, time to settle us down.
-
I love a bit of paneer. Mildly sauteed, of course.
-
With better decision making near their goal we could be 3 up by now. At least we have the lead a the moment. Lets hope Lambo doesn't make any stupid decisions during HT.
-
Better so far, but we're still happy to let them have the ball. Cattermore obviously the answer to our central defensive issues.
-
I hate cheese
-
We're winning, but if we're honest we know we don't deserve it. Our goal was the result of a hideous defensive mistake, and we've had so little of the ball again it's kind of hard to believe. The defence looks much better with Vlaar back, though, even if Clark instead of Baker would make everything infinitely better.
-
Bacuna has put a couple of good crosses in to the near post but Benteke isn't making the run in front of the defender, he really needs a goal.
-
Bizarrely we played rather nice football the last 2 minutes of the half. Knocked it about, neat passing, ended with a Bacuna pass into the box. Lovely.
How come during the rest of the half we give it away all the time?
-
I hate cheese
Agreed, it's moldy milk.
-
Miles better than recent showings, although if we persist in giving the ball away and letting the opposition keep it, we'll end up in familiar territory.
-
We should be able to keep these out but I'd be happier to get another goal. Think 2-0 would be game over.
-
We are looking better but we still seem incapable of retaining the ball for more than 2 passes. Luna is abominably bad and Baker out of his depth. CB looks 75% which is a massive improvement on the 35% we've seen recently. Gabby took his goal really well albeit a gift from Cattlemole. Bacuna looks good going forward.
It suits us while we are one up as we can counter at pace. We need another (and possibly another).
-
Its not the lack of possession per se that bothers me, its the way we drop so deep, what happened to that pressing we did at the start of the season?
On the plus side, I think the Delph-Westy-Bacuna midfield has a nice balance to it
-
Typically woeful again, but Sunderland look hopeless in attack. That goal just seems to have knocked seven shades out of them. They look a beaten team already, even despite having 75% of the ball.
Luna and Baker look bloody awful though so there's a chance we might gift them something back, but off their own back they don't look like scoring. We're the same though. We're just waiting for errors to pounce on. The lack of any skill or touch in our players is frightening though.
Second half, hopefully Benteke will get a goal. I think it'll transform him. He's had some nice touches today, he just seems worryingly fearful of the penalty box at the minute. He's dropping far too deep. That said, our midfield is so poor he's got little option but to keep coming short if he wants a touch of the ball.
Has Westwood touched the ball today?
-
Ki bossing midfield for them , if Swansea don't want him I'd take him looks class.
26% is pretty poor again but at mo we are winning so can't complain too much.
-
Like to see Albrighton on for Weimann
This. All he's been doing is marking space i've been watching him close.
-
28% and 2 shots on target, not good stats. However the one that counts is 0-1. How long can we carry on like this without getting another Chelsea like hammering?
We need to learn to pass the ball and hang on to it for a bit.
-
We look to have some of our attacking threat back. There are still deficiencies but it's a definite improvement.
-

Big shout on the Wensleydale but with cranberries in it for me!
-
We're playing really well, come on Villa.
-
Will be a big 3 points if we hold on today - tough fixtures ahead and this would be a huge boost .
-
If we keep giving them possession and not pressing them, we'll pay the price, Ki looks likely as he keeps popping up with chances.
Lambert needs to stop them keep dropping too deep and allowing them to knock the ball about. One is not going to be enough.
-
I'm convinced our inability to keep the ball is not to do with the midfield three, but the back four - their movement and decision making is utterly awful at times. Oh for an Okore to play with Vlaar and encourage us to play a little bit.
-
Taking into the conditions, I'm more than pleased with the first 45 minutes. Key factor is the midfield and defence working together as a unit. Not once have I been concerned about Sunderland scoring, it's all very controlled by us despite them having plenty of the ball. Whisper it but we're actually putting a few passes together. Best of all is we're giving Sunderland very little time on the ball.
So far, so good.
-
No cheese here. Just Belgian Waffles with whipped cream for brekkers. Yummy.
-
Someone needs to tell Benteke to stop flipping moaning and get a grip. Played ok in the last 4/5 mins though.
-
Why do we insist on making this game so difficult. Keep the ball, just make short simple passes to someone in the same shirt, preferably moving forward. I am happy to see a patient build up. much better that the pass and hoof , hope for one of ours to get on the end of it!
-
Ki bossing midfield for them , if Swansea don't want him I'd take him looks class.

He did at Villa Park too. Looks a really good player - very comfortable on the ball
-
We're playing really well, come on Villa.
Really. We scored via a mistake.
-
Missed Gabbys goal (as my river is not flowing properly) but sounds like a great atmosphere up there. Assuming that Bacuna doesnt get sent off (and he might) we have a chance. Nice piece of hold up play from Benteke just before the break.
-
Have to say, it does remind me of Dortmund - under Ottmar Hitzfeld. I suppose it won them the CL, so who knows.
-

Mrs Rob is South Korean and we saw him play at Ricoh during Olympics - a class act. Seems to have had a fall out with Laudrup.
-
thank f**k Lowton jumped over ball with that sunderland chance from weiman giving it a way . Ive seen so many own goals with those kind of things
-
It's really interesting the wide variation of opinion being posted on how Villa are playing.
Guess it' what makes for lots of discussion on Lambert, the team etc.

He doesn't look any worse than ours!
-
Shit - Cattermole off, Barini on. Not sure who'll create our chances now
-
Come on boys!! keep it simple!Keep possession, don't give it away lightly and just please make sensible moves!
-
Gabby's goal celebration was stranger than his last one.
-
We're playing really well, come on Villa.
Really. We scored via a mistake.
And have had numerous other chances, just so happened that was the one that went in.
-
Last season I could never have envisioned Benteke ever looking so devoid of confidence.
-
good effort leandro
-
bacunu shot
-
Gabby's goal celebration was stranger than his last one.
what did he do, didn't see it??
-
Great shot Bacuna
-
crap corner ash
-
Shit corner from Westwood again.
-
Gateshead pulled one back at Halifax
-
Great corner Westwood. Absolutely great
-
Our first corner and..and its shit!
-
Dreadful corner
-
bacunu shot
is this some sort of alcoholic drink?
-
Gabby's goal celebration was stranger than his last one.
what did he do, didn't see it??
He just kind of ambles off, sinks to his knees and then gives a look as if to say: did I leave the bathroom light on?
-
Thank you ref.
-
Shot corner from Westwood again.
how the fuck can professional player do that?
-
Just got in and we are winning. Yes
-

His brain was just catching up with what had happened.

Shot corner from Westwood again.
how the fuck can professional player do that?
makes you wonder doesn't it, but then again I've seen some of the best players ever miss penalties and shoot over from 5 yds out.
-
Shit
-
Phew
-
Fucking hell. Last season Benteke would have roasted Colback in a one on one race. He seemed to give up as well.
-
off side
-
Close one lads. Offside.
-
Offside.
-
Close offside decision there - looks level to me.
-
Phew - off-side
-
Lucky. That was god awful defending yet again.
-
lucky lucky lucky....
-
shit we are lucky there
-
Sums up our luck at the moment and Sunderlands in one moment.
-
Phew
-
Just got in and we are winning. Yes
Its like two tramps fighting and we have one hand on the hooch.
-
Just saw replay - we were very lucky - looked on
-
Don't be fooled, though, that goal is coming.
-
Looked Level to me. Advantage their should be to the attacker shouldn't it?
-
We're really asking for it.
-
offside
-
Its like two tramps fighting and we have one hand on the hooch.
LOL, that really does picture this game!!
-
Really riding our luck now - they've had chances, a penalty shout and a dodgy off-side. Need another goal quick
-
No fucking support for Gabby there.
-
Not enough support there for Gabby.
-
One of those games where the result is everything today - not great conditions to play in either - I'd take the points however we get them on this occasion.
-
Please villa. Keep the ball.
-
Is Wiemann still on?
-
Crowd are wound up now!.... just concentrate boys!
-
Weimann is not involved at all. May as well take him off.
-
Has Vlaar shit himself?
-
Getting a bit dirty now.
-
Silly booking Delph for dissent .
-
Weimann using his weight.
-
bookings everywhere....
-
get Weimann off now! He just looks shot to bits!
-
A lot of dickheads in their team.
-
Silly booking Delph for dissent .
Agree, fucking hell Delph.
-
Oh look Weimans on the pitch. Hadnt noticed.
-
HOOF
-
Getting scrappy now. Need to get Weimann off and Marc on
-
Getting scrappy now. Need to get Weimann off and Marc on
Agreed.
-
Getting scrappy now. Need to get Weimann off and Marc on
agreed!
-
Only 70% possession for them. We must be improving.
-
The composure in some of our players just kills me
-
Andi has to do better there
-
Poor ball Weimann - wasted chance.
-
Square, square, back, hoof.
-
their gonna score - come on villa
weimann off now
-
Hanging on here. Dreadful to watch.
-
Andi again. So so poor.
-
Weimann off NOW. That was truly shit.
-
Square, square, back, hoof.
Yep, this kills me - we always seem to end up givng the ball to either Baker or Guzan, turning 100% possession into 50:50.
-
Weimann off forever and ever please.
-
Dreadful attempt Weimann. Does Lambert not see this?
-
Weimann needs dropping for his own sake.
-
They are looking more threatening than Villa now. We need another goal to finish them off
-
What a shit shot. Seriously, is that the best you can do?
-
Betcha Lambo puts KEA on for Bacuna in an attempt to keep the ball in midfield. Huh.
-
Sunderland starting to full us out of shape. Concerned that we're not making anything ourselves.
-
Hanging on here. Dreadful to watch.
Agreed - although I'd take a scrappy 1-0 win over a free flowing 3-3 draw to be honest.
-
decision making shite at times
and whats weimann doing on - come on lambert
-
Gabby should have been off
-
Never intentional that and that c*** has been on the wind up all half.
-
Weimann's shot was horrendous.
And Benteke's pass through to Gabby was a perfect example of him trying to be too classy. Simple pass eitherside we're through on goal.
-
Betcha Lambo puts KEA on for Bacuna in an attempt to keep the ball in midfield. Huh.
Which is logi-bollox of course.
-
Fucking hell, I wish Benteke would get his mojo back
-
It is actually like we have been told to lose possession, something is not right.
-
The refs losing control a bit here.
-
It's painful to watch it really is. Shockingly poor. Westwood is bloody awful. He's the one who might potential make things tick for us, or is supposed to in that deep lying playmaker role. He's shite though. Totally lost in the game.
We need 3-4 good signings and quick to solidify are fortunate position in mid-table.
-
Can the FA review that Gabby 'elbow' after the match?
-
Dreadful attempt Weimann. Does Lambert not see this?
I can understand with Benteke returning whey he would reunite the front three that did so well last season. That said, it isn't working, and a change is needed. What we need is a poacher type forward to play with Benteke and Gabby. Weimann isn't it unfortunately.
-
Hanging on here. Dreadful to watch.
Agreed - although I'd take a scrappy 1-0 win over a free flowing 3-3 draw to be honest.
We'll be incredibly lucky if we manage another smash and grab.
-
Square, square, back, hoof.
Yep, this kills me - we always seem to end up givng the ball to either Baker or Guzan, turning 100% possession into 50:50.
It defies all logic. We have the ball, and now we're going to put it up for auction.
-
This is heating up now.
-
has to be a red in this game
-
FFS change it Lambert
-
if this was a boxing match Weimann's corner wold have thrown in the towel by now! The poor lad is just looking more and more out of sorts , for sure he will only get worse as this goes on!
-
Ref losng it alright.
-
Ref has done us some favours today.
-
there number 4 going to get himself sent off
-
someone is going to get sent off in this , could be two!
-
This half is really dragging - baker injured now.
-
Ref has done us some favours today.
agreed, I think he's been very good
-
It's painful to watch it really is. Shockingly poor. Westwood is bloody awful. He's the one who might potential make things tick for us, or is supposed to in that deep lying playmaker role. He's shite though. Totally lost in the game.

Agree, Westwood it absolute shit, by far our worst midfielder.
-
Can the FA review that Gabby 'elbow' after the match?
not unless the ref completely missed it. If the ref saw it (see elbow on Benteke vs Chelsea by Ivanovich) then the PL/FA cannot take further action.
-
well If sunderland lose this - they are down
albrighton coming on
-
Fulham 2-1
-
Ref needs to keep the lid on this
-
Fucking hell, I wish Benteke would get his mojo back
Fat Bastard must have stolen it while Benteke was out injured and cryogenically frozen.
-
Oh shit. Vlaar is down. Not again, no no no.
-
Vlaar feeling his calf fuck
-
vlaar injury
-
Fulham winning - taxi for big sam?
-
thats vlaar back to the docs
-
This is where we need a bit of experience in the midfield, hold the ball and just pass it about, take the sting out of the game...
-
I fear Vlaar could be out for a few weeks after this - need to see transfer action fast now.
-
weimann use your brain
-
Weimann horse shit again.
Get him off.
-
Dreadful touch again Weimann
-
... and the move ended with Weimann.
-
No fucking composure. Hoof even when 30 yards from goal.
-
Can the FA review that Gabby 'elbow' after the match?
not unless the ref completely missed it. If the ref saw it (see elbow on Benteke vs Chelsea by Ivanovich) then the PL/FA cannot take further action.
Was it deliberate that's the question
-
Albrighton for Vlaar - Lowton centre half - bacuna right back?
-
Andi a complete liability there.
-
Vlaar is gonna go off. We need another goal.
-
Weimann loses it again.
Oh shit, Vlaar off
-
Weimann just gave the ball away AGAIN
-
Vlaar off Albrighton on
-
Wiemann is a prick. Doesn't look like he gives the slightest shit.
-
Albrighton on for, wait for it, Vlaar.
?
-
Great, Vlaar off.
-
Come on me babbies.
-
weimann is lucky vlaar has injury
-
oh god this back four oh god oh god oh god oh god
-
Vlaar goes off. We will now concede a headed goal. Absolutely guaranteed. Stick a tenner on it.
-
Donacien at FB; Lowton to CB?
No, thought not!
-
Now what, how best to replace Weimann?
-
Gabby is smiling all game
-
Weimann also has to go off. All attacking play is breaking down with him.
Vlaar off for fucking Albrighton. Why not give the actual CB a chance?
So Lowton at CB, Bacuna at RB.. Albrighton right side of midfield..Weimann.. where?
-
If we win this I'll be absolutely gobsmacked.
-
No way we're hanging on to this now Vlaar's off
-
Unfortunately this is why we are in desperate need for an experienced CB. The one we do have is unreliable. Vlaar will always get injured sadly.
Bloody awful game. They have all the ball and can't do anything with it and we're bloody horrific.
-
CB in January then
-
Uh oh, did not want to see Vlaar going off - urgh
-
Desperate stuff now without Vlaar - deeply worrying last 20 minutes .
-
Donacien at FB; Lowton to CB?
could be a good call!
-
Benteke so close to killing the game .
-
Weimann off for anybody.
-
I still can't see this finishing with 22 players!
-
shit....that could of been 2
-
fuck should have been 2
-
FFS. Off the line.
-
Now what, how best to replace Weimann?
Coco the clown?
-
What the feck was that? Should have scored
-
they are shooting from miles away now. If this is all we we were doing we'd be moaning about how shot our shooting has been.
Fuck Benteke off the line
-
How the fuck did that stay out? Criminal.
-
Weimann also has to go off. All attacking play is breaking down with him.
Vlaar off for fucking Albrighton. Why not give the actual CB a chance?
So Lowton at CB, Bacuna at RB.. Albrighton right side of midfield..Weimann.. where?
Strange decisions again! Fuck me, should of scored there. Not quick enough getting support in the box.
-
That would have killed them off...
-
Weimann off for anybody.
Mrs Hampshire said she would be happy to play in place of Andi!
-
albrighton in space and they go thee other way ffs
-
Bloody hell Tekkers. Never looked like scoring there. What the fucks happened to him? Its upsetting to see, because it's not for the want of trying, he's just really lacking in confidence.
-
Ahhhhhhhhh, compose yourselves!!!!!!
-
defend the corner!!
-
Lambert, tactically, is pissing me off.
-
Where the hell was Benteke's second effort there? He did well with the shot the stopped and from my observation was not in an offside position and gave up.
-
I don't think I've seen a bigger bunch of morons on the ball. We had a man out wide screaming for it, and we just pump it in the air over the shoulder. Brainless.
-
Benteke's second chance was embarrassing too. Hit the ball.
-
Our midfield have about as much composure as....
-
This is excruciating now.
-
As they push forward we may kill it on the break - hopefully.
-
You can see Benteke struggling to hit his top speed. I wonder if he's still not quite right?
-
That was great defending from Bardsley, to be fair. Shame, the big man needs a goal to get back in the swing of things.
-
Whats so hard about playing a few short passes to people in a bit of space?
-
Giving it away again? FFS
-
Lambert, tactically, is pissing me off.
Clueless.
-
no conviction from CB needs a scappy goal
-
Centre half on the bench put a winger on WTF
-
You can see Benteke struggling to hit his top speed. I wonder if he's still not quite right?
I'm sure you right about this - he's been off it ever since the hip problem.

Clueless.
-
Delph, I love him, but he's started playing like a fucking twat
-
no conviction from CB needs a scappy goal
lacking belief and confidence
-
This might be 4-0 if Benteke was anywhere close to his form last season. He's had opportunities.
-
Whats so hard about playing a few short passes to people in a bit of space?
I know. It drives me bonkers.
-
Big man fell over, reminds me of Heskey at his finest :)
-
Thank goodness Sunderland are toothless up front.
We're making very hard work of this. I just wish we'd try and do something ourselves rather than play backs to the wall.

Adam Johnson on for them
Oh no he is due 15 minutes of decent play every 3 months
-
how the fook does weimann get in front of marc
-
Albi's done well so far, need to get the ball wide to him
-
This is nerve wracking to watch but I just fancy us to get one on the break, we're creating chances.
-
We haven't got motoring this season at all. It is just so patchy and bity from us. After such a great win at Arsenal we should have settled in.
-
I know we are winning and Sunderland don't really look like scoring but we are hanging on against a team that is bottom of the league and have only scored 15 goals all season.
-
Off behind the sofa, see you at 4.55.
-
Sunderland going hung ho now. Just stay steady lads!
-

I am dreading the upcoming home return against Arsenal
-

-
Oh Marc what are you doing???? SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
-
Gonna be a long 10mins :(
-
Albi's done well so far, need to get the ball wide to him
hes had his hands up so many times in space and the players has played into trouble instead delph for eg
-
Bloody hell this half seems interminable
-
This is so ridiculous, just keep the ball, it cant be that hard!
-

-
We're wasting time like we waste chances.
-
I know we are winning and Sunderland don't really look like scoring but we are hanging on against a team that is bottom of the league and have only scored 15 goals all season.
True and that will probably come back to haunt us. However, they have been in quite good form recently and gave Chelsea a very good game a couple of weeks ago. Always an optimistic and pessimistic way of looking at things
-
excellent shot by Marco, good save
-
Albrighton is much > than Weimann
-
Albrighton done more in 10 mins than Weimann in the whole game - sunderland poor considering our defence .
-

I am pessimistically optimistic about us this season.

-
This is a 5 minute injury time jobby.
-
Gabby MOM for me
-
Can someone tell me when I type the word S P A R K Y it comes up as Alisa Stewart???????
Because of people using that in place of Mark Hughes. As for what you were typing, SHARKY won't do that.
-
They take the ball off us so easily at times, when we don't just give it to them.
-
Chelsea three up at Southampton
-
Albrighton done more in 10 mins than Weimann in the whole game - sunderland poor considering our defence .
Fast forward a year, Albrighton has signed a new deal and Andi only has 2 years left. It will be the other way round then.
-
Our best spell of ball retention in ages??
-
AAAARGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!. Hit the target
-
This hurts to watch. Just aching everywhere. The fucking tension.
-

-
bad miss
-
I missed the first half, but from what I've seen we've looked a better team today.
-
My 10,000th post. Would be nice if it was a Villa goal, instead of which it's a penalty to West Brom. Sums us up really!
-
if they score they'll have deserved it for our wastefulness alone. Horrible
-
Fucking hell Albrighton!!!
-
Filthy Stripes 1-0. Penalty
-
WBA 1-0
-

Sexy babe from home and away - married to alf ;)
-
And Albion go one up
-
sparky
-
That would've been our goal of the season. Maybe they'll take the hint about passing the ball as well - that was good.
-
Hopeless from Albrighton. Truly shite
-
Hopeless from Albrighton. Truly shite
It really was. He has to score there, just not good enough.
-
That little spell of possession showed what a bit of composure can do. We didn't rush, we weren't flustered. We can do it. But 30 seconds per game isn't enough. A cool, experienced head in the middle and at the back would make a hell of a difference in helping us keep the ball better.
-
Other scores
Arsenal 0-0 Cardiff
C Palace 1-1 Norwich
Fulham 2-1 West Ham
Liverpool 2-0 Hull
Southampton 0-3 Chelsea
Stoke 1-0 Everton
West Brom 1-0 Newcastle

Thank Christ they're utterly terrible.

Why cant we just string a few simple passes together? What do they work on when training?

-
Thank Christ they're utterly terrible.
Goof job.

-
Just calm down. 5 mins added!!
-
Why cant we just string a few simple passes together? What do they work on when training?
Play tig?
-
Colback should be sent off for off the ball contact there tbh.
-
nice to see some passion
-
We've had some nasty games recently. Horrible atmos.
-
Gabby gets a yellow for being pushed over
-
Handbags? What happened?
-
5 mins of pain to go.
-
Come on villa see this out .
-
Colback should be sent off for off the ball contact there tbh.
Gabby is twice the size of Colback and fell over like he'd been shot after having barged Colback over. Yellows for both is fair
-

I think Weimann just does " running around a lot' that's his training. He then reflects that perfectly at the Game! Why doesn't the Coach just tell him to calm down! and use a bit of brain!
-
hold on Villa
-
hold on Villa
Please
-
Desperate times - clear this corner
-
nice to see some passion
I agree. It pisses me off when we don't even argue penalties against us, futile as it might be. Show you care
Everton level against Stoke - good for us again and Arsenal now two up
-
The tension
-
pooping myself here. Can I say pooping on the internet?
-
Defend the Corner! FFS

-
I'm going to need clean pants on after this
-
Blow up blow up reffffffffff!
-
90 seconds left
-
We are the worst footballing side in the league with the exception of maybe West Ham. Truely dull and uninspiring. I hope the travelling fans are all wankered otherwise I've no idea how they'd cope watching this shit.
-
Come on Villa see it out.....
-
get the ball to Milner in the corner
-
Who hoof it? find a Villa shirt ffs.
-
Easy.... Easy...
-
pooping myself here. Can I say pooping on the internet?
You can say it but I'd suggest that you dont google image it
