Weimann owes Lambert a fucking huge display. Lazy git needs to pull his damned finger out today.

Lambo's team selections are never predictable. Settled sides perform better. 442, presumably.

our left side is woeful. dyer and/or routledge could have a field day

no defenders on bench seems strange, herd must be injured again

would have much preferred albrighton on the left instead on tonev

Gabby as main forward might work well, but I'm stuck for a reason as to why Tonev deserves to start and Albrighton doesn't. However, given that the games are days apart, maybe fitness is the reason.

Hopefully he's gone easy on the turkey over Crimbo. He can't afford to look any more Rooney-esque.

Albrighton unlucky and Weimann very lucky .

I expect them to target luna .

The Albrighton thing has to be fitness. 3 starts after months out in quick succession.

Tonev looked positive and actually dangerous for a few minutes the other night.

I'd rather see Tonev right and Weimann left - Weimann looks better when cutting inside and Tonev is better with his weaker foot than Weimann, giving him more options on the right.

This is right up there with some of the worst line ups I've ever seen. We'd put out line ups in the stiffs 5 years ago that were far better than this to be honest.

It does mean there is no way we can play the route 1 stuff today. Maybe Lambert has not actually advocated it and is frustrated with us doing it constantly.

I may be wrong but looks like 4312 to me. 3 new players to bring energy in midfield. Much will depend on how Delph and bacuna protect the full backs v Swansea wingers and whether baker is switched on v their movement

I wouldn't be counting on us not lumping it up to Gabby in vein hope if we're struggling to get beyond the half way line. I'd have personally kept Kozak in because he's the only one in anything close to goal-scoring form.

There's players on Swanseas bench (fucking Swansea!) who would absolutely walk into our first 11 with ease.

Our bench has Bowery on it still. Nuff said really.

I honestly couldn't tell you mate, but I didn't bring the squad to this point. We're just cobbling together a load of players who aren't really good enough.
Personally I'd have left out a lot of the dross cheap signings and played some of our promising yoof players, like Johnson, Robinson etc. I'd have had Grealish in by now. Being too young isn't an excuse we can use any more.

ok so Albrightons been our better player of late and hes dropped

weimann has been utter rubbish and keeps his place  and Tonez starts ?

Luna is awful but I suppose who do you put in

Its about time Bacuna started in his right position and good to see Kea not in .

I dont think it was Kozak's fault on Thursday , more of the service he wasnt getting , might have a knock .

That's what it looks like to me. I think it's a pretty decent call all things considered. We definitely need fresh legs in midfield and albrighton has been out for a while so not surprised to see him on the bench

Hopefully less hoof ball though I expect Swansea to have plenty of the ball today. Plenty

All I can see is negativity, things aren't good at the moment but theres very little that can be done before todays game. If I was feeling as bad as a lot of people appear to on this site I'd just avoid anything to do with Villa or football in general?!? I don't see the point in logging in to just add 'Here we go for another woeful game'........... Do something that makes you a little happier?

It's the English gentleman's McGrath given right to be pessimistic. It's what this country was built on. Fish, chips, tea and pessimism.
:)

The more miserable and negative I get before a game, the more chance the side has of either matching my expectations (ie being really shit) or exceeding them. That's my logic and I stick to it. During this feck awful run anyway.

Steve Hodge
Andy Gray
Simon Stainrod

Genuine 4-4-1-1, Weimann behind Gabby and Bacuna wide right. Not sure how I feel about this, but not a bad start so far, with a couple of good passes from Westwood.

It's not two 'up top', though. Weimann's playing plum between midfield and Gabby. If it weren't Weimann in that position and was, say, Tonev nobody would be thinking it was 4-4-2 with Tonev up front. This is 4-4-1-1 like Moyes always used to play at Everton.

Well, as opening ten minutes or so go, we've had worse this season, eh?!

Westwood and Delph are going to have to really work hard to get a grip on the midfield, could us Bacuna tucking in a little more to help out I think.

Bacuna and Lowton down the right could end up being a great combination. They can cover each other as one of them goes forward.

We're pressing as well. I don't know why we stopped pressing teams? It worked against Arsenal. Plus they're young player and should be able to keep it up all game.

This is the most 'hussle' I've seen from the team for ages, too. I think he's picked the right midfield for that, to be fair; Delph, Westwood and Bacuna all put a decent shift in when they play.

When we were doing well early in the match, Weimann was dropping very deep and giving midfielders another option. The defence retreating has led to the midfield doing the same but Weimann has stayed roughly where he was, so we've been getting completely overrun in the middle since then.

This is the conundrum I mentioned earlier. This formation is great of we're good enough to keep attacking, press them back, but if we're the team chasing the ball (as we frequently are) then it offers very little protection in the middle of the pitch.

Still, we've shown we can get at them so let's see what happens.

It's not bad if you want to be defensive, dig in, frustrate and counter, but if you want to have a lot of the ball and go toe-to-toe with an opponent, especially one like Swansea, you just can't fucking play it.

I hope everyone watching this who ever advocates 4-4-2 is now seeing the futility of playing like that. It's not bad if you want to be defensive, dig in, frustrate and counter, but if you want to have a lot of the ball and go toe-to-toe with an opponent, especially one like Swansea, you just can't fucking play it.

It's not the formation, it's the style. We need to push up and press them. Any formation is shit if you have everyone in your own third except for your strikers.

Come on, that's willful blindness. The formation is a huge contributor to the crapness of the style: not having options on the ball, everyone being miles from everyone else, being too far away from anyone else to be anything other than stodgy and stuck in 'your position' and never interchange, being constantly outnumbered in the middle of the pitch and nobody knowing whether to commit or run backwards all of this virtually guarantees less possession and being overrun, especially by a side like Swansea.

Swansea practice how to move off the ball and into space and play with a nominal formation which allows them to be more fluid. The problem with our formation is that it's too much of a Formation, with players stuck in their positions which, combined with our obvious lack of practicing these moving-off-the-ball novelties, means we're being utterly dominated.

What's so odd is how we actually looked up for it for 5 minutes or so. It suggests these players CAN do it if they want to.

I don't know what's wrong, whether it's confidence, malaise, revolt against the management or whatever.

It's plain to me they aren't giving 100 per cent.

I can't accept 10 professional footballers are constantly out of position collectively and not know what they're doing..... They stand by a member of the opposition when we've got they ball, and then get as far away from one when we're defending.

I can't accept Lambert doesn't see it, I can't accept he is not trying to correct it.

I can only assume this lot don't want to play for him and his demeanor today suggests he knows it and is prepared to accept his fate.

Think the tactical change Lambert made for the last ten minutes, moving Bacuna into the centre and Weimann wide right has improved us a bit.

Delph and Westwood couldn't get near Swansea but the extra body has helped. I'd move Delph to left back for the second half and bring Sylla or Kea in.

Weimann has been much improved in fairness today as has Bacuna.

The problem isn't that they don't think they can attack, the problem is that they have no patience and try to attack right at the goal every time they get the ball - a position compounded by 4-4-2 because 4-4-2 is a counter-attacking formation, not a front-foot formation.

Which might give us more of a chance. Still, they don't practice pass-and-move in training really so we'll still probably be hoofily rubbish.

Would be interesting if someone near the scene could tell us they ran to on the post match thread.

The problem isn't that they don't think they can attack, the problem is that they have no patience and try to attack right at the goal every time they get the ball - a position compounded by 4-4-2 because 4-4-2 is a counter-attacking formation, not a front-foot formation.

Not true, it completely depends on the type of players you have playing and how you instruct them.

England played 4-4-2 in the Euros a couple of summers ago and were painfully neutral/defensive.

Mixed feelings about this half. If we sneak a win here somehow is it just papering over the cracks? Sounds crazy but are we better off getting battered and forcing Lerner to make a change?

The change could be replacing Lambert or freeing up funds and wages.

They are so easy on the eye to watch Swansea. Lovely football to watch.

Anyone got a rough idea how much this Swansea side cost to put together ?

About £28m quid.

So their side cost less than ours - that's what a good management structure does for you.

pardews spent less that lambert in the last 18mths

Yes. That's what I'm saying - it's a defend and counter formation at best, and if you try to use it to play proper football on the front foot then it will fail.

Again no. England weren't counter attacking.

Man United have won championships with a 4-4-2 and didn't counter attack.

Firstly, counter-attacking is inherent in being actively defensive. It's the other side of the coin and the reason it exists. England weren't counter-attacking because they didn't mean to be defensive, but because this formation, executed rigidly, cannot compete on the front foot in modern football.

Secondly, United last played real 4-4-2 in the year 2000 and Ferguson brought in Queiroz to stop it (in fact, Ferguson claims to have never actually played 4-4-2, but to have ini fact invented 4-2-3-1). Also, of course they counter-attacked, they were famous for it, but not in 4-4-2 and not for whole games.

KEA got shovelled off the ball way too easily there. Resulted in a very nearly lethal counter attack from Swansea.

I would take Steve Bruce at this rate
You fkn bet. It's 4-0 now.

I always thought that the idea of getting Lambert was that he was going to instil a passing, pressing style to our game. It isn't working out like that, but there's no need to go back to the stone age.

We're already there.
Hull look like Brazil circa 1970 compared to us though to be fair.

Not that I'm advocating getting Bruce.

Bruce is a decent manager, always has been unfortunately.
