Like most on H&V, i`m a committed supporter who "Puts his money where his mouth is" and buys his season ticket every year, but for how much longer??. The club do seem to be taking our loyalty for granted, i am pretty certain that a conversation along the lines of "These fucking idiots will keep turning up every week no matter what" has probably taken place in the boardroom on more than one occasion, WRONG!!, an increasing number of supporters are beginning to question the whole package. WE EXPECT TO BE ENTERTAINED, THATS WHY WE GO, Speaking personally i am just not prepared to spend half a grand a year to watch the team lose or struggle to a draw every home game, no one expects a champions league place any more but at least give us a side who wins its home games, Lerner needs to tell PL that this is the bare minimum, our home record is quite shocking and has been for four seasons now, losing at home to the Arsenals and Man Us is no disgrace, losing to, and making the Fulhams and Wigans etc look like world beaters is another matter entirely, at one time we would say "oh we should beat these", no-one says that any more, we`re Aston Villa for gods sake, we`re playing at home, Lets start playing like it, before the rows of empty seats start to turn into entire blocks.
-
I let my season ticket go mainly due to the kick off times being moved so much making it difficult as I work shifts - I must admit I'm glad i never paid for a season ticket this year as I would feel very short changed.

See you next week.

I didn't go today.
I've started to give up on attending the Man. United game, my least favourite home game of the season. Never at 3pm on a Saturday, usually a horrible atmosphere in the ground due to the amount of away fans in home areas (was that a problem today?) and the less said about the 90 minutes the better.
I wouldn't blame anyone who doesn't renew as blind loyalty can only take so much, we have been terrible at home for years now, the results and also performances have been really dire at Villa Park this season.
I still go to more games than not and I'm going to Stoke on Saturday which should be a "classic". In fairness there is more fun going away as we tend to have more exciting games on the row and more chance of picking up a win but of course it's a little bit more expensive. I get to 3-4 away games a season and usually miss a home game around that period to make it affordable.
Really is it too much to ask to be a little bit more attractive to watch in home games? One fluke 2nd half v Man. City doesn't really cut it for me.

19 Years and counting now. They will be celebrating with us when it eventually happens.

Sighs heavily, accepts the inevitable.

We go because we are afflicted. We can moan on here or anywhere else but we errr... Go again in hope.
-
I shall think hard before renewing next season.
SOTC & I renew on the basis that we spend less in a year on season tickets than we would shopping even if we only went to town once a month. I think the time has come to spend some time shopping - it would be more fun even if it does cost us a fortune.
-
We're 11th in the league. That will do for me in May.

Didnt see any, but given the shoeing they usually get when they inevitably start celebrating, i`m not suprised.

We're 11th in the league. That will do for me in May.
Sadly the season doesn't end today, Lee. Forget midtable, we're a bottom half side in a piss poor league.
-

Pretty much sums how the club have lowered the fans expectations. Shocking resignation of any ambition.

We have four relatively 'winnable' matches coming up.

They will all be very tough games .

8 home games we've played this season against a mixture of opposition:
5 home defeats, 1 draw and two wins.
We have failed to score in five of the games.
The one draw we had we were second best v Sunderland and really should've lost.
The two wins really turned on two terrific free kicks by Bacuna which obviously won't happen every game. The City game was a fluke, an enjoyable one but a fluke as it's completely out of context with what we've done in other home games.
Really those are grim stats. Lambert is getting off lighty with those stats as he regularly picks up away points which keep us mid table.
We are not good to watch at home at all, we desperately need a number 10 in January, it won't solve everything and make VP in a fortress but it would make things more interesting and one would hope get Benteke firing again.
I don't blame anyone not renewing in the summer. It's up to the club to get a team on the pitch who can play with a bit of style and win some damm home games. The fans will come back then.

Let's hope things change but right now there doesn't appear to be any signs of improvement. We're getting worse not better.
-
It actually surprises me that Utd at home sells out every season. You'd think we'd learn by now.

After the last three years of chaos and near relegation, what postion would you be satisfied with, come May?
-
Exactly.
-
It actually surprises me that Utd at home sells out every season. You'd think we'd learn by now.
A few years back it only attracted 36k for some reason.
The reality is there's a floating 5k or so who turn up just to see the big players or worse are actually away fans sat in home areas so that inflates the figure. Same for Liverpool really as Chelsea and Arsenal don't tend to sell out as regularly.
-
bought two half season tickets for me and the missus out of some twisted logic that the second half of the season cannot possibly be as bad as the first. Really doubting my wisdom after today.
-
Empty seat next to me as my lad preferred to play football as his games kick off at 2 on Sunday's, he usually misses playing to watch us, but the opposition being that lot he opted out and I'm glad he did.
-
We've scored six league goals at home all season, and three of those were in one match! It isn't good enough for players and a manager representing Aston Villa.

And I missed that match. I'm fed up of this home form now its beyond boring and becoming a downright depressing chore to attend games at Villa Park.

Sorry to repeat what I've written on the post-match thread, but it's the way I feel right now.
As a ST holder, I’m pissed off: having supported Lambert’s candidature as manager and welcomed his appointment, I’m at a point where I think he has reached a bit of an impasse. Today we faced a Utd team which could have been taken down by a side with energy, passion and verve. Instead, we saw a team that proved to be every bit as flaky as other Villa sides of the last three years. Luna, Sylla and Baker were, simply, hopeless. All three made mistakes that turned into goals for a side that was not particularly threatening otherwise.
Along with Luna, Sylla and Baker, KEA is not a Premiership player. Furthermore, Benteke is going through what seems to be a nightmare of a self-confidence crisis. And the ball retention of this team is awful.
Taken all into account Lambert really does not seem to know what to do about it all: his tactical options are limited; his substitutions are too little too late; his half-time talks seemingly ineffectual. The choice of MF seems to me to be critical in top-class footie these days: today, we saw a poor Sylla and a limited KEA team up, with Gardner and Bacuna on the bench. I said before the game, I’d love to have seen the youthful and technically-capable Bacuna and GG play as a breath of fresh air, alongside Westie. Lambert stuck with the tried and tested … but ultimately fallible.
Let’s hope Vlaar and Delph make the difference we need them to, otherwise we’re knackered this season.
And we need to make some astute January acquisitions - not "another one for the future" or "from the bargin-basement department". Everton, whom I thought might have struggled this season, pulled two fantastic season-long loans out of the bag and are prospering - any chance of Lambert doing this?? - nah, thought not.

I'm told that we are the only team in all four divisions yet to score a goal in the first half at home in the league. Is that true?
-
I hope not.
-
Yep all our league goals have come in the second half.

Tell you what Barry as a holding midfielder protecting the defence would have made a huge difference !!

No-one else?

Yeah. Ronaldo would've been useful too. Unfortunately we can't force players to sign for us.

I don't know of other league teams Legion.
I pity the diehards in the North stand, all they've seen is the opposition scoring infront of them this season.
No wonder Saunders_Heroes is always on suicide watch on here. ;)
-
3 goals from open play too... it's December. I'm amazed we get the gates we do.
-
Something has got to give with this home form. It's a fcuking disgrace.
-
We really are a shockingly awful football team, we have gone backwards since the end of last season. Benteke may be off form but the service he gets is woeful. Cannot think of one positive at the moment.
-
The return of Albrighton.
-
Strangely enough I had a similar chat with my brother in the pub, if you were thinking of buying a season ticket after watching the last two games on sky you'd be put off for life
-
The return of Albrighton.
Yeah maybe, but that says everything about the squad.

We are used to it. I've had it for the last three years. The best part is filing out whilst the away fans party and then walking past them all on Witton Lane with their happy smiling faces and chatter.

Benteke's first touch is woefull as well. So where do we go from here then ?
Cause i'm f..ked if i know.

I'm already worried that Xmas will be ruined by palace and Swansea. We've lost our way at home, it's become psychological I fear.
-
It doesn't help that our owner is never there to suffer with us. I wonder when Randy checks the scores on his phone if he thinks the fixtures are the other way round like in American Football....
-
You'd think RL would have some idea of how bad we are at home and want to do something about it...

Don't worry , enjoy your turkey and Xmas day - the games fortunately fall after Xmas day so don't let it spoil your Xmas.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a 0-0 draw my old friend :(
-
I wish it was only the cost of the season ticket. When my two sons and my grandson sat down with me a couple of weeks ago we would have done over 1000 person miles by the time we got to our respective homes. Norwich away is the least I have to travel and that is over 100 miles round trip. Yesterday I drove a round trip of 220 miles for a bag of chips and a walk round the club shop. Just keep the faith. Grit your teeth, sit in a corner with your elbows over your head like a chimpanzee and do the pain. As we used to say in the army. It is not always this bad. Most of the time it is worse. Up The Villa.

You should have been there the day we were relegated in the 90th minute of the last game of the season. A huge lazy lob was thumped towards our goal at the Holte End. It seemed to hang in the air for an eternity. The legendary Jimmy Dugdale had tracked back to defend the goal line. The Holte End held its breath. If it went in we were down. If Jimmy cleared it we were safe. Jimmy Dugdale was the most one footed player I have ever seen in a Villa shirt. With his right peg he was majestic with his left he was like Long John Silver. You could feel the prayers ascending from the Holte. Please God let it fall to Jimmy's right foot. It fell to the left, Jimmy kicked fresh air and we were down.
-
Don't get me wrong I will never give up on villa, I can't. But I'm a middle aged miserable git and I'm entitled to moan about anything. Villa being no exception :(

He did. He sacked the last manager partly due to the poor home form and negative atmosphere at home games...

Has RL even watched a home game this season? Villa are shocking value for money and have been for the last 3 years, especially to season ticket holders like myself

The only thing Randy is watching is the balance sheet. Man U at home, biggest crowd of the season, on the tv= kerrching. Wages are down Premier league money is up, so the football is crap, let them moan just as long as they keep paying. This is the Aston Villa franchise. Weren't we told success is the deloitte top 20. I bet Villa will have a bigger revenue this season than ever. There's your modern success.
-
Lerner stopped caring once he realised it's harder to break into the top 4 than he thought. I think we're stuck with mid table ( that's if we achieve that ever) obscurity for a long time until the guy up top has a change of heart.
I don't really blame Lambert for everything. It must be tough working under financial restrictions with fee and wages but then I look at Swansea, Southampton and Everton who have spent a lot less than us over the few seasons but play with a vigour, freshness and style of football now not yesteryear.
I look at the resigning of Guzan a positive, Benteke a positive, Okore a positive and maybe Vlaar, but I have to say that's about it for me. Luna, Bennett, Lowton, Westwood, KEA, Tonev, Bowery, Bacuna so far have definitely not been and don't look like being good enough at this standard. Helenius and Kozak I still have to make my mind up about, but 8 poor signings out of 12-14 isn't great is it?
I guess we just have to put up with it and wait and see what happens but I feel its going to take decades for Villa to even get anywhere near European football again unless its luckily through a cup win.

The problem wth the north stand is that it combines dreadfully impaired leg room, guaranteeing no physical comfort for 90 minutes, with an infuriatingly decent view of the pitch, and the grimness which inevitably unfolds there.

That's it in a nutshell. The view is fantastic. A perfect view of just how awful we are.

I gave up going after last season, a combination of abysmal home form, players with little regard for the club, and the fucking ludicrous kick off times made up my mind. This was before considering that some of these players 'earn' in a week what I do in a year.
I now watch Halesowen Town, my nipper gets in free, the money I contribute makes a big difference to the club, I can stand with a pint and watch a game and they kick off every week at 3pm. The players run their knackers off week after week. It's like how football used to be, and how it should be. I love Villa, always will but I hate the fact at Villa I was a customer, at Halesowen I'm a fan.
-
The home form is not acceptable. It can't carry on. I fear it will. I'm sick of it, but I've resigned myself to it.

Tell you what Barry as a holding midfielder protecting the defence would have made a huge difference !!
Yeah. Ronaldo would've been useful too. Unfortunately we can't force players to sign for us.
Turned down the opportunity to have Barry on loan didn't we?

Well, if you have been a Villa fan Pre Sky days you'll know we can bear loads. Like being a Junkie, "Is this our low point" Not on your Nelly. We are showing an improvement on last season, things still aren't right in areas....In Lambert we trust. UTV
FFS I've seen Stainrod in a Villa shirt. Jeez I've seen Steve fuckin Foster in a Villa shirt.

Stainrod could definitely fill a Villa shirt, were you there when he tried to dive for a penalty in front of the Holte? now that was desperate.
-
I saw Stainrod score 4 on his debut against Exeter so I will always have a soft spot for him.
As I've said elsewhere we need to sort home form/entertainment out. Its an absolute disgrace.
If were going down this route for the long term we can't keep alienating our 'customers'.

I went to loads of shite games in the 80s watching the talents of David Hunt , Mark Lillis , Bernie Gallaher and Carl Tiler etc . Having fun at Oldham in the cup and all those Simod games I went , I remember this shite one against Boro on a rainy night , could have been a semi actually , I think thats what it was called but you know , I never thought it was expensive then , I paid the money , got the programme , gave the car watchers a few quid and really enjoyed it with my mates to be fair but today fuck me , its expensive and Im not going to keep paying out for me and the lad to watch that shite every home game .
we havent seen a goal yet - oh I lied , Newcastle at home I did .
-
I understand JP, I can't talk as I only get to 2 or 3 home games a season, I'm trying to point out tho that we aren't, after last season, suddenly look like a top 10 team. Just have to take solace in the signs of improvement, better points, more clean sheets, nae hammerings (YET).
-
We have a number of out of form players it seems to have been all season in some cases.. I'm waiting for Lambert to turn these players round.
The longer the season goes on the less optimistic I am that it is going to happen.
I'm not saying sack him by any means but managers get sacked for less.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, Stainrod in a Villa shirt, I watched Villa get relegated with Preston North End, All those... moments... will be lost in time, like Holt Enders in the sky. Time... to die...
-
I would normally have gone to one or both of the Christmas home games but won't this year. We may win one , we may win both, but the football down there is so turgid I get no enjoyment. The Sunderland 0-0 will take some getting over, I'm still in shock.
-
You should have been there the day we were relegated in the 90th minute of the last game of the season.
I seem to remember going to a testimonial game for Jimmy Dugdale. He was getting on and suffering with his health. If my memory is correct, at that point he was literally one footed.
-
I hate the fact at Villa I was a customer, at Halesowen I'm a fan.
One sentence sums up the modern game in the top flight
Quite sad really
-
When they did that ridiculous competition at half time and announced that one of the prizes was a five year season ticket, half the ground could be heard muttering about booby prizes. I bet there won't be many match tickets for Boxing Day as presents this year.
We keep going, not in the Lambert way, but must need our heads examining.
-
I wish I had won a five year season ticket. Over two and a half grand saved would be very welcome.

Just reporting it as it is. Music Hall stuff, like it always is at times like these. We all keep going and all have claret and blue in our veins but it is fucking crap at the moment.
-
We are in a poor run of performance and iffy results. Things change and always have done.

I think it's a great prize personally. Like Ads said, it's saving you a fortune should you win it.

Things do go down and up but, like a yo-yo, never come as far back up, unless you are very good at it.
You can give me the 5 year ticket as well, even though it would only save me £1500.
-
I've had a night to sleep on this.
Decent performances and results in the next 4 games and he'll have bought himself a bit more time to convince me that this "project" is something other than the emperor's new clothes. Load of rubbish yesterday, same at Fulham the week before. Even if he's not sacked, is someone going to stand up and tell him this is unacceptable? The only reason he can point to some improvement over the same period last year was simply because we were so absolutely shit last year that it would be harder to not improve on it. Is that the best we can say about ourselves at the moment?

The frustrating part is we have it within ourselves to be playing much better but the signs have been there for months now. We've been playing terribly. When you play terrible and pick up results the issue isn't so much of a red flag, but now the results aren't going our way. We're now seeing the inevitable side of playing piss poorly. If you do, you're going to lose most of your games.
Lamberts got to do something. He always seems like a late reactor. Hopefully he never gets to a stage where his reaction is too little too late. We're that bad at the moment, if we play like this for the next dozen games I can see us going a dozen without a win. So I'm hoping he's doing some bloody hard work on the training pitch and maybe a few Witch doctors in desperately trying to fix Concrete Ron.
-
For as long as I can afford to go, I will go.
-
How much more can we bear? Our home form has been disgraceful for seasons now with regular beatings from all comers. We are like street fighters, the beatings hurt at first but the more of them you get they become the norm. So, we can take a bit more before we're damaged beyond repair unless something changes dramatically.
-
I'm bringing the wife and kids along with me on Boxing Day for a family day out. Oh dear, what have I done? I've ruined Christmas.
-
I don't mind losing to a better side but it's just bloody dreadful to watch and we aren't even giving it a go.
-
We're 11th in the league. That will do for me in May.
Sadly the season doesn't end today, Lee. Forget midtable, we're a bottom half side in a piss poor league.
We have four relatively 'winnable' matches coming up.
Fulham was supposed to be winnable...
-
For as long as I can afford to go, I will go.
It's only the finance that has stopped me going.

The next few games are very important, if I don't see an improvement in performance my faith in Lambert will disappear pretty quickly.

And Hull, and West Ham, and Albion....

I only get to watch it on TV and even i think i'm being robbed.
-
and we were supposed to be slaughtered by Arsenal and Man City.
Most expected nothing from Southampton
That's what you get from a team like ours.
Win some lose some.
I don't see how we can expect free flowing football with the players and resources at Lamberts disposal.
So far we have lost to Liverpool Newcastle Spurs Everton and Man United at home. Yes its extremely disappointing but it ain't the end of the world just yet. Taking into account our victory against Man City we have now had 6 of what is likely to be the top 8 sides visit VP.
I'm pretty confident that the remainder of our home season will see a few more victories but don't expect to be entertained to any great extent.
-

If I was in Melbourne I would be quite happy to watch it on TV. So long as they were showing it in 'The Gentlemen's Club'. Is that still there?
-
don't expect to be entertained to any great extent.
That's my bare minimum requirement. Even if don't win games, I expect my money's worth in terms of entertainment.
-
The problem is though Chico is that managers are under so much pressure to get results that entertainment is well down their list of priorities.
Its ALL about results, results, results atthe moment with us sitting in 11th position I'd say the hierarchy at VP are delighted with how things are going

If we continue playing as badly as we have been then we can't expect to stay in 11th. Some of the luck and rub of the green we had in that 5 game unbeaten spell has now deserted us. Lambert has to sort this out quickly because the games are coming thick and fast over this period. We should have been addressing a lot of problems even when we were winning matches, but we haven't. Now we're losing games so we've got to do something pretty quickly because once you get in a slump it's hard to get out of it. It's easier to lose 5 on the bounce in this league than it is to win 5 on the bounce. I think Lambert has been and is, asking for trouble.
-
This is the first year since 1995 I haven't had a season ticket. I do not miss it. I miss some things about not going to the game, but my missus has just had our first baby, so I'd rather be at home with them on a saturday and money is tight. But, if I still had one I'd seriously be considering sacking it off next season. Pile of shit lately.
-
We're 11th in the league. That will do for me in May.
Pretty much sums how the club have lowered the fans expectations. Shocking resignation of any ambition.
For the past two seasons a good many people on here have had us down as "absolute certs for relegation" - we didn't go down.
Now we are mid-table and the same people are still not because we might slip down the table.
We are where we are, low wage budget, no real money for big name players and Lambert had to start from a basis of building from scratch whilst having to off-load practically a whole team of high-earning wasters. For that he gets a lot more time from me.
-
I don't want him sacked.
I do, however, want him to start to get us playing football better because at this point and for the last few weeks, we look as poor as we did at almost any time last season.
We're mid table currently, which is good - or at least better - but look below us, there isn't too much of a drop and it'd be easy for anyone to get sucked into it (look at Albion).
Earlier, someone used that "we're approaching a run of winnable games" thing. That's fair enough, but look what happened last time we approached a run of winnable games, against the likes of Hull, Sunderland, West Ham, Albion, Fulham. We didn't win any of them. We only actually managed to score in one of them.
Taking things for granted at the moment - ie being mid table - is extremely risky. It's December. The relegation places don't get decided now, but then again, neither do any of the other places.
I want Lambert to do well, and I want him to build something here, but the fact is, for a long period this season, we've played some of the most inept football we've produced in recent years. We're not even getting the basics right, we can't keep the ball, we can't pass, we can't move off the ball, we may as well just boot it straight out of play at corners, and we struggle to get throw-ins right at times.
No matter how much you support Lambert, that is really, really poor, and there's only one person who can sort it out.
-
It may well be progress of a kind, but it is not good to watch at the moment.
I just do not get some of Lamberts thinking. If he were to be given some funds in January then he may well bring in some experience, i hope.

Unlikely to be back this season from the sounds of it.
-
There seems to be a school of thought that although we are mid table we are not far away from a relegation battle. Fair enough but we are not far away from challenging for Europe either. At the moment we are in mid table, which I think is acceptable. If we are in the top six in a few weeks that is fantastic. If we are in a relegation battle then that is a different matter. Don't judge us on speculation, judge us on the facts of our position at the moment.

still think his goal against spammers was one of our most important with the Lowton goal and weimann ( fulham one )

There's a big gap to even 8th now, 8 points I think.
We need to stop the rot in the next 4 games, they're all games where even if we play at 80% we can still get at least draws from them.
I've looked at Swansea who are 1 point clear of us and their next 5 are Everton at home, Chelsea and us away and then the two Manchester clubs so as long as we don't lose to them (which given it's a home game is very possible) I would still expect to be in the top 10 on NYD.
It's going to be that sort of season where thankfully I don't believe we'll be in any sort of relegation battle but we'll be miles away from even 8th place. When you're stuck in a stangnant position for months you can only hope the quality of football improves quickly to make it a little more appealing.

We are 12 points away from Europe and 6 from the bottom 3 so yeah we're miles away from Europe, not that I expect that. Add in 10 pts in our last 10 games including Hull, West Ham, Fulham, Sunderland, Cardiff and West Brom, not exactly hard and we've failed to score in 7 of the 10 games.

There's one way to get things back on track and stop all the moaning, and that is to start scoring more goals, and winning more games - especially at home.
The experience of watching us at home the last few years has been about as miserable as it gets in football terms.

Without Vlaar, we don't look capable of winning as our defence is all over the place. Definitely a case of being visited by the ghost of Christmas past, as you only have to look at our results last year in December and January to see where a defence containing Baker, Clark, Herd etc. will take us. What's that ghost of Christmas past? We'll beat Wigan, we'll beat Southampton, we'll beat Bradford, we'll beat Millwall, we'll beat Newcastle?

I've just checked the last few years home results - in both of the last two seasons the only teams with worse home records than us were the relegated teams. This season the only team with a worse home record is Sunderland and no team has scored as few goals at home as us.
Do you want another depressing stat? We've won just 11 home games in 2 and a half seasons! Pass the noose would you?!
Our season tickets must be the most expensive by a mile if you go on pounds per win!!

One of these days when I've nothing better to do I'll work out how many times in the past thirty years our home form has been better than our overall league place.
EDIT: Just done it - five times in the past thirty seasons, and the last time was 2002-03.

The data backs up my thesis that the clubs biggest problem is the home fans.
We need to buy new ones in the January window.
Lerner has let the problem fester for too long. Its a clear out that's been long coming.
Sorry for those of you who will be moved on to other clubs but its best for all parties that you get more regular support, Aston Villa needs to build a new younger and vibrant fan base in line with our policy.

Where do I sign?
-
Does anyone care to work out how many goals we've averaged against us without Ron vlaar? I suspect it's over two.
Lambert' comments about him sound ominously similar to last year when he was never reported as being out for a set period but missed a third of the season. If he doesn't come back, or we don't get at least a loan player in, then I can't see us avoiding a relegation scrap again.
The run of fixtures up to Xmas is also crucial. We can stack up the points in theoretically winnable games to pretty much see us safe. A bad run and then we're back into the sort of fixture list we had at the start of the season.
Given we're not scoring goals we could really do with being tight at the back again. I'm mildly concerned at the moment. Nothing a decent win or two wouldn't remedy of course.
-
Did Vlaar have a history of injury problems before coming to Villa? i know he has his detractors but he is the best we've got.

I am hungry most of the time, does that help?

Did Vlaar have a history of injury problems before coming to Villa? i know he has his detractors but he is the best we've got.
With the arrival of the new Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk and new centre back partner Kevin Hofland in the season 2007–08, Vlaar was ready to make the next step in his development. However, on 16 September 2007, Vlaar got injured in the Eredivisie away match against Roda JC (1–3).[13] Vlaar needed a surgery on the cruciate ligament and was out for the rest of the season.[14] After the surgery, Vlaar was confronted with an additional setback, as he had a bacterial infection. Vlaar recovered from his injury at the beginning of the 2008–09 season. However, during pre-season, Vlaar got another injury at a medial collateral ligament of his knee. After being sidelined for over a year, Vlaar returned to the training field. After an innocent coming together with Kevin Hofland, Vlaar damaged his cruciate ligament again. It was the same injury he had in the previous season, causing him to miss a complete season again.

Performances have been poor recently, there is no escaping that and something really needs to change. However, I've been taking solace from the fact that we have taken a full 11 points more this season than from the equivalent fixtures last season (19 vs 8 points). Having said that we won the 3 equivalent upcoming fixtures last year and I don't see us doing that again unfortunately.
Not sure if this is of interest but here are the season vs season stats:

Interesting stats and makes me wistful for the return of villadawg .
THose stats suggest a vast improvement but we will see how the next few games go.

That's what happens when I'm bored at work.
I've put in Cardiff as Wigan, Palace as Reading and Hull as QPR fyi
-
If we are still 11 points better off after the next three then it will be the best Xmas we have had for as long as I can remember

I Stand by every word of this.
-
Really struggling to give him much more support.
-
That's enough now, 4 straight defeats finishing with losing to palace at home is too much.
-
Much better managers have been dismissed for much less.
Grow some Lerner
-
How much more can we bear?
Nowt. Get rid of him.
-
No more. Terrible. Should have been booted after Bradford game but enough is enough
-

how did that work out? by my estimation one point better off after an "easy" run and very poorly prepared for the second half of season
-
I'm starting to pick and choose my home games now. For someone who not so long ago hated missing a home game it's becoming pretty normal to watch us play at Villa Park in a pub somewhere.
It's not like it's a boycott or anything, money is tight and I went to Stoke at the weekend. Just decided Swansea would be the better game.
As I said a few weeks back, I don't begrudge anyone who decides enough is enough. We must be the most wretched team to watch at home in the league. Even bleeding Palace won twice at home in 4 days a few weeks back
Even today from watching from 20 mins on, we just have no idea how to create. And this was with a decent amount of attacking players on the pitch and at home to a very poor team.
I do wonder what on earth we've done to deserve this. We have decent loyal support and yet we see the likes of Southampton (in league 1 3 years ago) and Newcastle (run comically with Joe Kinnear as DOF) both above us, both challenging top 6, both good a decent amount of good players, playing good football home and away.
Yes we've made some big errors in the last few years but this seems a neverending cycle of misery. Even when we win a game or have a shock result the joy is shortlived. Look at our three best results of the season:
Beat Arsenal on the opening day, lost our next three
Beat Man. City, didn't score in our next 4 games and had two points from 4 games.
Beat Southampton, have now lost our last 4.
I don't think it's acceptable at all personally given the progress that was being made at the end of last season that increasingly it is looking like another relegation battle with us playing increasingly McLeish style football.
Just not good enough but we'll plod along playing caveman football picking up enough points to be o.k.
-
To be honest I've had enough of it now, we lose all the time and it's not getting better
-
I said on another thread today was the first time ever that I couldn't be arsed to go - I forced myself to go to fulfil my season ticket.
I have seen some poor sides down the villa over my 38 seasons - but not one as clueless as this lot.
No goals in the first half of any home games this far - the worst home record in all 4 divisions in the uk this season - the worst home record over the last 3 seasons in the whole of Europe .
It really is depressing.
-
Somebody at the club needs to shout STOP.
Year on Year we are breaking all sorts of records for being poor. Worst home record two years in a row, worst beating last season Chelsea away, not scoring in the first half of a home game and now you tell me no team in Europe has a worse home record over the past three seasons?
That is absolutely awful. I know there have been other bad stats and I couldn't be bothered looking them up.

A laboratory forensic type research by tomjennings III and totally bunk.

Really struggling to give him much more support.
I must say today I am at the turning point. Turned up early at VP. Heard the team news and thought that's the best he can put out. That was the high point of the afternoon. I was sure after 28 mins that this will end in 0-0 at best and it did almost bar the goal from the Palace kid. We really are an inadequate outfit that plays inadequate football. To be where we are today fighting relegation for the fourth season in a row makes me want to gouge my eyes out. It is nearly unbearable.

Are you sure that was your highlight?

Is he still here?

Are you sure that was your highlight?
Oops sorry. Listen everyone the real highlight of the day was shaking hand and exchanging seasons greetings with one MR PWS before the game.

I take it I'm out of favour, then?

No not at all. I checked the tree and there was no sign of of a tall good looking man errr intelligent man so I headed for the gate!

I didn't see a seller before or after the match. After the match particularly concerned me. I thought maybe a suicide pact?

I was promoted/relegated to the bus stop outside the church today. Sold out of the latest issue and was feeling really good on the way into the ground. It all went pear-shaped from then on in.

When you collate it all together it's amazing really we haven't actually between relegated these past three years.
It just shows that thankfully it's actually really hard to be bad enough to go down, I thought we'd reached that point last season but we got things together just in time.
Even though it's pretty grim right now, I don't see us going down. Not with Cardiff in turmoil, West Ham having no strikers and a few other teams in poor shape.

There was a pundit this week banging on about 'regression to the mean' for teams after their new manager's honeymoon period ends. What's Villa's mean? Are we terrible or going through our bad patch? Logically you'd say this side is never going to get better, but bar a couple of personnel changes, we've seen against teams like Arsenal and Chelsea that it can. That's what I'm focussing on following today - that the possibility exists that we can play ourselves into some better form. After all, there wasn't a single incident that you can point to to make it happen last season.
-
Last season the catalyst for change was do or die. In the position we were in it was win or bust. So we had a go and won the necessary games. In that little spell we still failed to impress against quality teams and lost to Arsenal and manu away and Liverpool and Chelsea at home. Lambert has failed to find a method to win games in normal circumstances particularly against weaker or equal teams. Playing Russian roulette only works once.

Russian roulette can work more than once, but in Lambert's case he really is stacking the odds against himself, by playing a sort of 4-2-4. We all know that our defence is weakened right now, and it's made worse if the MF is weak. Against Stoke and today he started out with a 2-man MF and expected everything to be fine. I don't get what he's trying to do.
I agree that he has not found a method and I - a PL fan - am pretty much drained of all support for him.
The real issue is that the club seems to lack direction and commitment from those who own it.

Carroll will get West Ham out of it once he is fit. He will create mayhem and Sam will flood enough players forward to win the second ball. It won't be pretty, but right now I would back them to finish above us if we both stick.
And no, I do not want Big fucking Sam at Villa Park.

He may well also have been made aware of Culverhouse's alleged exchange with fans - which is inexcusable at any time

If Carroll is ever fit. And Benteke can do more for us than Carroll can ever dream of doing.

We heard Lambert on the way back on Tom Ross. He sounded very very down but said he wasn't a quitter.

Lambert's demeanour in his interview on AVTV after the game was one of someone who has given up.
He must be feeling so fed up.
Three key players with long term injuries after the season began so promisingly.
The real puzzle to him (and a lot of us) must be how his players have collectively lost their effectiveness as a team, whilst cutting down on the number of goals conceded. You would expect confidence to be high after achieving this but it just seems to drain out of these lads the longer they go without a goal/ win at this point.
Was it only a month ago that the same team was sitting on 5 games without a loss? The same players were injured then, but there was a run of results for the team which boded well for the rest of the season, even if consistency in performances was a bit hit and miss.
Whatever, it can only be a matter of time before the team's fortunes change, as individuals realise that they need to showcase themselves for the WCup squads somewhat more effectively than they have been doing and motivate themselves and those around them to greater efforts. Nobody else can do it, which may lie behind outbursts from the coaching staff when the players seem to forget what they knew and we all saw, just a few weeks or months ago.
-

Well there are couple of big ifs. If he is fit and if he can do what you said. Whenever he has payed 3 matches in a row and that's not very often he has not done much. Sam flooding the opposition penalty area no I can't see that but if he does they will be easily picked by teams on counter. No worries they will finish below us.

How many of our are looking to go to world cup,2 at most. That is a very small straw you are clutching. The team has lost all shape, and most importantly the manager now looks lost.
-
I realise it's a small straw, but it's all I could think of.
Just hoping that Vlaar and fully fit Benteke can get back soon and inspire a few wins.
-

It's good to know he isn't a 100% O'Neill clone then
-
What we could really do with is a Krulak pep talk about how he wouldn't want to be with us in the trenches and we are all Balti eating surrender brummies.
-
Loads , not the first or last time.
You sack them , they have no accountability .
We go down , they lose money and credibility its a short contract arrangement.
Sick to death of swing door false dawns.
Naive he maybe , but a decent manager is there

People were saying the same at this point last season when it clearly wasn't the case. But I do have concerns that the club and fans may not have the fight for this for a fourth year running.
My biggest gripe is that villa have put me off football again. I love football even more than I love villa. And the league is really exciting this season. But I just couldn't face match of the day last night.
Plus I know England are going to ruin the World Cup this summer!
Fuckers!
-
I'm staging my own little boycott of the world cup. It's a total circus, and the people that run it all have their fingers in the till.
Aside from that, Villa are rubbish again this season. Yeah, there's injuries to a couple of key players (Okore looked good before his injury, but he seems to have become the second coming of Franco Baresi since being sidelined), but this is Lambert's squad and there's no quality out there whatsoever, from the defence to attack there is nothing worthy of note (Guzan aside). It's a total nothing team that while they try hard, are just not up to the task of playing decent football.
-
After yesterday I would not even credit them with trying hard. Several of our players, the worst example being KEA, have reduced just getting to a tackle in time not to be hurt by it to a fine art. They make a show of trying hard but they are fooling nobody, least of all the opposition.
-
Based my thoughts .

Ok, so just opinion. I would love you to be right in that case and Lambert turns into Arrigo Sacchi but I'm still scarred by the thought he got tactically outdone by a 4th divison manager last season.

The hardest thing for me to take is that I love everything about our club apart from the current stewardship and team....and that's crazy.
If anyone reading this sits in Trinity middle block B......
I was the bloke sat alone in his seat as the stand emptied, I sat there till I was asked to leave and I was just thinking to myself what a totally beautiful place this is, how it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I take my seat and how its been such a massive part of my life for 40 years and how it deserves better than what we have had for the last few years.
Last night I realised that I have started to fall out of love with the game, and the frustration is that there's very little those of us who really care can do about it apart from sit back and watch it all happen because its totally out of our hands.
I haven't felt as bereft as I did yesterday for a very very long time. I believed in the young and hungry philosophy because I thought it was another example of our great club taking a leadership position and sticking two fingers up to Sky and the modern game.

You're not wrong Arnie. Keep the faith.

The young and hungry policy isn't necessarily wrong, but the young and hungry players need to have the ability to play Premier League football. Half of our team sadly just aren't up to the mark.

I feel the pain Arnie - I have another 10 years on top of your 40 and I too share your feelings - I recall the dross during the 1960`s and to be perfectly honest this squad mirrors that one - no style, no class, no shape, poor leadership, totally out of its depth ...
Like many I have also fallen out of love with the game .... or should I say "business" .

That's the exact feeling as me, I have 5 season tickets in my house with my kids and you can ask Legion how passionate we all are but I really don't know how much more we can take.
My eldest Georgia 11 for the 1st time in years has asked not to go anymore, to see the look on her face after the game yesterday was heartbreaking, she plays football for 3 different teams and loves every aspect of football, she always watches football on telephone no matter who is playing and being the kind hearted girl always wants the smaller teams to win.
I know she's not the same as you 40years strong but just wanted to let you know that the dire dross of football being played at villa park is even effecting her.
Can I keep doing this..... Change is needed.
-
The current Villa are making it very hard for me to like football anymore. We have 3 season tickets but my 12 year old has no desire to attend anymore and has been to 3 games this season. My eldest loves Villa but I can see the disappointment on his face every time we leave VP. His dream would be to see us in the Champs League but I can't see it ever happening.

I can attest to that. That is a shame if she feels that way, but if she is rooting for the underdog can you ask her to wish for us to win on Saturday? See you there.

She's gunna come Saturday mate more for dad time then to watch us but another performance like recent and got a feeling that it will be me staying at home with her.

Absolutely bang on the button. This post along with a few others are keeping my sanity at the moment. I'm feeling the same emotions and glad that there are others out there that are like minded. I am really struggling to put yesterdays game out of my head. There are more important things in life but when you are passionate about football and your club it is hard to swallow.

I will keep most of my powder dry on this as new issues of H+V tend to come round frequently at this time of the year and I feel an article coming on.
However, I share the feelings of many here. I fell out of love with the modern game some time ago but never shook my Villa obsession.
It must be said though that I am not enjoying this season. It is becoming more of a chore to go down there with each passing game at the minute.

I am with you on that - thank heavens for Viagogo- Due to holiday and family commitments I have managed to sell my tickets for Man Utd, Palace, Swansea and Arsenal - I am avoiding the pain of being there whilst making back hard earned cash - Plus the fuel money saved. I have spent too many long journeys back up the M6 after abject performances at B6.

I sold my ticket for the Man Utd game and the worrying thing was I didn't miss it. I knew we'd lose beforehand, the team didn't disappoint and the read up of the game afterwards confirmed that we'd been abject, again.
I remember talking to a Chelsea fan years ago who had been a season ticket holder for 20 years but then gave it up after one season of Mourinho took over. I couldn't believe he'd give it up when Chelsea had finally become the team to beat and he responded by saying there was no excitement in going anymore because he knew they'd win almost every game before he got there so what was the point.
I was never really sure I got that mentality but I have to say that after the last few years I'm starting to feel the same way about the Villa but at the opposite end of the spectrum. Home wins are now so rare and the performances are so predictable I really do wonder why I bother. I'll be there again tomorrow but I know we'll start OK, steadily get worse, never threaten the Swansea goal and gift them a couple of easy finishes. 0-2 is my conservative expectation of the result tomorrow and when it gets to that stage, really, what is the point?
-
It would take a very good manager to make this young and hungry thing work. We don't have that. Paul Lambert is a manager who destiny probably will go the Paul Jewell route and head back down the leagues. Very limited, and no inspiring enough.
-
Gary Shaw is on Sky ;) great man
-
I'm no massive fan of Lambert but I can't take anyone seriously who thinks Hoddle or Allardyce be our next manager.

I know it's only a computer game but on Football Manager I've reached 2017 and Lambert has just taken over at Blues which I found quite amusing. To add to the satire his first signing was Tonev on a free.

Aha so you're the guy who I keep buying 15 quid tickets off in the Upper Trinity ;). Seriously I feel ripped off paying those prices!

It was interesting that Gary Shaw was saying that he thinks we need to buy this and that. Sounds like he still has plenty of faith in the Manager. I am not sure that Lambert will change his style from up and coming, potential, cheap, never heard of them type players.

I know it's only a computer game but on Football Manager I've reached 2017 and Lambert has just taken over at Blues which I found quite amusing. To add to the satire his first signing was Tonev on a free.
That's not football manager that's a crystal ball mate! ;)
