Herd at left back maybe? Who do Fulham have on the right of midfield?

@MatKendrick: Looks like a 4-3-3 to me, possibly with Baker and Herd in central defence with Clark at left-back and Bacuna right-back #avfc

I find it strange Lowton is on the bench if the back 4 is how kendrick predicts .

Great to see Herd back, if only to piss off PaulWingeAgain.
More seriously, I'm not sure where Lambert plans to play him, unless it's in central defence with Baker going to left back. Strange selection but one thing about Herd, he never lets us down. I just hope he's careful with his tackling inside the box.

I'd have gone for the same attack and midfield but I will be interested to see how the back 4 line up - herd getting the nod ahead of Lowton is a surprise to me , but lets hope he takes his chance.

The fact herd is in for Lowton suggests to me he'll be part of a back three. Otherwise it really is a vote of no confidence in Lowton. Lambert seems to see herd as a bit of a last resort

Delph could be wasted at lwb, if that's where he's playing.

I can't see Delph starting at left back - I think its a 4-3-3

Lambert tends to see Herd as a centre back. It looks like 4-3-3 too so the only question is whether it's Clark or Baker at left back. I hope he goes with Clark at centre back.

Bit weird that Libor's nowhere to be found, he must have picked up an injury mid-week. I'm relieved that Bent's missing from the Fulham team as well, you just know he would have scored - especially with that unconvincing back four.

reckon herd is in at centre back. wouldnt like to see delph moved

this is the way I see us lining up.

--------guzan
bacuna, herd, baker, clark
kea, westwood, delph
weimann, benteke, gabby

to be honest that is a very poor fulham side. must be the oldest midfield in the league.

the swedish kid has the makings of a fine player, could cause us problems.

if benteke and gabby play well we should win comfortably.

4-2 to the villa

Back in the 80s (I think) small heath loaned a player to Coventry. He scored the Coventry winner in the last match of the season that kept them up and relegated small heath.

Haha. I'm hoping they both prove me wrong, which KEA has been doing in the last few games. I just don't like KEA and Westwood in the same midfield. I think Sylla must start, but what do I know...Lambert's the manager and to his credit, he doesn't change the team at the wish of the supporters. And so he shouldn't. Need the three points today.

Well he himself has admitted his bad lack of form and within minutes of him coming on last week we had conceded a goal due to him. Not too much to be mystified about tbh.

Herd isn't maybe technically the greatest, but he has bags of energy and will also be able to run with the ball and bring it out of defence if we need to try and hold on to possession.

Berbatov looks lively today. Can see his movement in and around Herd being a problem. I think we've started ok overall though. Couple of chances to have a chance on the break.

Would be surprised if Delph and / or Westwood don't get a booking today, which would mean missing the Man U game.

I don't think I've noticed Weimann yet?

We're passing it a fair bit better so far. And the midfield three look decent.

Breaking down a bit at the front though. Benteke doesn't quite look his sharpest. But we do look like we can win the ball high up the pitch today. Fulham look a bit ponderous at the back.

Our defenders are doing well so far. But the shape looks a bit awry and I can see them breaking our offside trap.

I honestly typed that before that Fulham chance! Great play by Clark. He did somethign similar v Southampton.

Delph must be booked there surely.

Bacuna having a shite day. However, Berbatov showed what having creativity in the side means - what a touch that was to put what's his name through. Would Kozak have done that? Lambert needs to overcome his allergy to real creative signings.

Fantastic pass from Berbatov

We're going to have to pull it out the bag again.

Are we actually playing worse than v Southampton? Probably defensive wise we are

Could really do with one before half time. Certainly need to avoid conceding

that was wonderful by delph. Gabby had to be following that in. It was the only place delph could have put it.

Again, I think Westwood is far away from our main problem. The whole right hand side is contributing nothing.

The movement is often very poor, which is a problem when you play so narrow and Baker isn't going to contribute much going forwards (from open play).

Berbatov giving us the runaround.Playing for a move no doubt!

When he has more than one defender on him because Premier League defences know what to do with crosses. I agree that we need more width and one reason is the cross option, but it's not the only option and 4-4-2 just concedes the match.

But why would you expect a holding midfielder to beat a man, have pace, or venture forwards too much? I think he's been looking to pass the ball forward a fair bit to be honest. As against West Brom, he's the only one who will pass it forwards on the deck under pressure.

Out-thought and out-played. This has been as bad as anything we've served up this season, against a dire team. If ever a team really, really needs a break, we almost always oblige with gushing generosity.

Every time we get the ball, we are surrounded by Fulham players, hasselling and nipping at us, putting us under pressure.
When they get the ball, we stand off, stand back and let them play.
Westwood, and Kea, totally, utterly ineffective midfielders.

The back 4 cost less than £1mil ..there are times when you need to pay for quality and we haven't for a few years.

That's now 4 goals ..WBA ..Soton 2nd and 2 today Bacuna has been at fault for , Lowton should be brought back

If we had a 100 million (as if) to spend in the summer I would honestly replace every defender we have and Westwood and KEA.

I would buy 2 wide men of real quality, a number 10 and a holding midfielder

Unfortunately they don't. We've ridden a lot of luck in recent months and we're in a solid position but lose a key player and things can change quickly in this league. For me I'm not sure Weimann (certainly in his current position), KEA, Westwood, Bacuna, Baker, Herd, Luna, Bennett, Lowton, Sylla, Tonev, Helenius, possibly Clark and perhaps Kozak are good enough.
Who in our side is a really good footballer? Decent touch and eye for a pass? Not sure.
We have a solid spine with Guzan, Vlaar, Delph and Benteke but as we see, lose Vlaar and the defence is a total shambles, and whilst Benteke struggles we look poor in attack. Delphy hasn't been at his best since returning either.

January needs action so we can cement our top half finish. If we don't we could conceivably fall back.

As for today. A good half time bollocking and I think we'll push on a bit, but we need to make changes. This game isn't over as Fulham look ropey at the back. That said, I don't think they're done scoring either.

Towards the end of last season we saw Villa score some amazing goals coming from some excellent passing moves. I was hoping we'd see that develop into our style, but we seem to have gone a different way altogether. We no longer seem to pass it patiently. Weird.

Collymore really laying into the ref on Talksport just now. Saying he's ruining the game.

They're not even that tidy at the moment. KEA is one of the poorest midfielders we've had. Westwood is Championship standard at best.
Westwood keeps playing Hollywoods. He's fast becoming the new Bannan. When he's not doing that he's pointing at which players the person on the ball should be passing too, but not showing any movement to receive the ball himself. He's hiding again. In fact he's been pretty fucking cowardly this season. Quite why I don't know because he looked quite assured from Feb- May.

Goals change games. This performance isn't very good, but then we haven't played well very often this season in my view. But if we don't give away two soft goals, and stick one of our reasonable chances away, the perspective looks very different.

I find it frustrating that if anyone criticises a performance where we win (eg Southampton) they're accused of being negative.

The things to criticise today are the defending for both goals - from the same player each time. And that we've shown up again our deficiencies in passing in movement. But we've passed it better than we did v Southampton and we've created more chances than we did in the first half of that game (ie more than one).

I wish we had a player that could pass the ball the way Berbatov did for that penalty.

All the people criticising Westwood, can I just ask what it is that you think he's doing badly.

We've only got two players who are looking to get on the ball and pass it forwards.

Come on then Bacuna. Smash this. Bit close for up and over the wall

Regarding Westwood-he rarely goes forward, rarely passes forward, hardly ever takes a good/different variety of freekick/corner. Can't beat a player, has no pace. I don't understand the support of him.

But why would you expect a holding midfielder to beat a man, have pace, or venture forwards too much? I think he's been looking to pass the ball forward a fair bit to be honest. As against West Brom, he's the only one who will pass it forwards on the deck under pressure.

That's fair enough, but he doesn't make any penetrating balls, has no real presence. A holding midfielder needs to be more dynamic in this day and age.

This is technically the worst villa side I think I have seen. Football was shit under McLeish but at least we had some players with a bit of ability.

Agreed. Smash and grabs are of course great but it would be nice to know we could play some football sometimes. All the posters down on anybody querying the stats during the week missed the point. Yes, three points in the bag but what happens in games like this when a team says 'ok, here have the ball we won't let you counter'? We lack the ability to do anything when the onus is on us. Eventually teams will put the onus on us.

Confirms that we need a midfielder who can tackle and close down more than anything, there is no point in having a playmaker if you dont have the ball.

Well I cannot see any progression in this side.  Our ability to keep the ball is becoming a joke in the PL. You can only get so far counter attacking and I can't see that these players could progress us further. If this is Lambert's strategy and he won't consider change, I wonder how long before a Stoke / Pulis type decision will need to be made.  We've regressed so far in terms of our play and the transfer and wage budget excuse doesn't wash any more.

We have got to buy a creative player for the middle in January, because we're utterly devoid of ideas there. Like Merson said, we don't have the creativity to play through Fulham, so we're just going to lump it long at Benteke and feed off those scraps.

That was that sort of player we needed to buy last January, but we didn't, and we didn't in the summer, either, so to not buy on in January would be very risky.

Why let Bacuna stay on the pitch, his guilt for the first goal should see him removed, don't blame him for the penalty ref made i believe the wrong call. Guzan has to share some of the blame for first as well but hard to overly criticise him.

Delph showed why he will not make Woy's England team, his impetuousness is so costly, a mad tackle and now he is suspended for a game that we had hope of winning
for the first time in years.

Lowton on for Bacuna for me as well please,as he is great going forward, leave Weimann on to start with but may have to bring Tonev on for him.

Some of the hyperbole about how bad we are every week makes me laugh it really does. We have not played well first half but had 3 really great chances. At the same time the defending for the first is the worst all season, from BOTH Bacuna and Guzan IMO, and the second just is not a penalty any day of the week. The guy has backed into Bacuna to ensure contact, WTF is the lad meant to do, just let him get the ball without contest? Mike Dean is a shoddy ref, and always will be. He will send off Delph second half given the chance. Such a poor ref.

As for the team - Westwood is always looking to be available and pass forward, the issue for him is movement in front of him! Weimann is nowhere, so there is literally only Gabby. KEA does nothing for me. Sylla should hold, with Westwood and Delph in front, Gabby needs to get wider more often and we need an outlet the other.

Oh and we clearly, clearly miss Vlaar

still think there is a result in this for us. Benteke missed a sitter and Delph was unlucky. We have handed them 2 goals. Not really getting the rub of it luck wise today, penalty was very harsh and the one we cleared off the line was blatantly offside. New manager has organised Fulham properly though, defending deep so Gabby is out of the game. Berbatov is playing deep and they have successfully isolated our two full backs both who have been awful.

Lambert paralysed again on the sideline, he really has a lot to learn tactically.

Weimann needs to be taken off, absolutely useless yet again. Lowton to come in at right back. Unfortunately Delph is going to have to go left back. Id move Herd into midfield and get him to man mark Berbatov when he drops in there. Think Herd has done well if looking like he is going to kill someone with a few of his tackles.

id try
Guzan
Lowton, Clark, Baker, Delph
Bacuna, Herd, Westwood, Albrighton
Benteke, Gabby

In a way, that team with Tonev is now even more counterattacking. The midfield two will have to sit deep and rely on out-balls to the pacy front four - that's conceding the midfield and that is a defence-and-counter tactic.

Bloody hell....where do you start trying to put that right?

For all the talk of this number 10 we need in midfield, I say we're crying out for someone prepared to roll their sleeves up and go into combat.
KEA and Westwood together are wetter than the front row at a Boyzone concert. So when Delph gets his obligatory yellow card and has to tread carefully, our tackling in the centre of the park virtually disappears.

Herd is never a centre half. Baker is never a left back. Surely Lowton, Baker, Clark, Bacuna is preferable?

As with the Albion game, this isn't over - their confidence is fragile and a goal will rock them.

Come on Lambert -- earn your stripes.

Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Marton on December 08, 2013, 02:39:44 PM
A trafficcone would be an improvement over KEA today, sadly the same can be said for Westwood.
Weimann gets no service but doesnt help one bit getting the ball or applying any kind of pressure.

The one thing Bacuna can do is take a freekick it seems. I don't know why we don't put him on set pieces. Tonev would also be better than Westwood.

There must be two Aston Villas... the one I see most weeks (either live or on TV) struggles to pass, can't take corners and rarely looks like scoring, acts like a championship team and makes the two worst team in the league look good... There is another one... it played on wendesday night in front of about 2000 Villa fans... we are dreadful to watch.

was just thinking the same, he fits in well in the current squad with the other collection of garbage

wouldnt like to be a sub on the villa bench today, if the manager doesnt think your worth a run on a day like today its time to find a new club

Weimann has been truly awful today.

That is far, far too kind.

Much of the issue in midfield is the lack of options up top. Gabby is too central, Weimann never seems to have a position. 4-3-3 should have 2 wide forwards, who can beat players and get in behind to supply the big man.

Can see us getting sucked into a relegation battle.

That's a tad dramatic isn't it?

I can imagine it happening if we continue playing this poorly for an extended length of time.

Doesn't that apply to every team? I imagine Man U fans are thinking the same thing. We could win next weekend against a team who have been playing as poorly as us in recent weeks.

No, because it depends how poorly you are playing to start with.

I'd also bet everything I own that Man U fans aren't thinking anything like the same thing. They're not going to get sucked into a relegation battle. If we carry on with this sort of level of performance for too much longer, we will be.

What I do know is we need to start putting together some much improved performances, and soon.

There's no movement, no passing, no ball retention, and far too much hopeful lumping in recent weeks. We've got away with it to an extent, but we've been found out today by a side that has lost its last fourteen thousand matches.

No presser is ever going to ask him a clever enough question to give us some insight though. There won't be any questions about the system, or lack of substitutions or creativity, or why so many long balls. It'll just be 'how do you feel to lose' and 'Benteke didn't play well, are you concerned'.

It's odd, I think individually Herd and Clark have been two of our better players. But the team as a whole has looked very shakey at the back.

I think this second half is pretty good evidence of why we don't play 442. We're not good enough. Westwood and Delph just aren't physicallly strong enough. And we don't keep the ball or create well enough to warrant that degree of risk.

Excluding the GK, this has to be the worst defence we've fielded in the prem league. Its breaking new records for shitness year on year in recent times, we lose a promising youngster for the season together with the best of a bad bunch being out for a couple of games and we get this lot. I think Bacunas a good player mind, but he's no fullback.

This team is crying out for two or three experienced players, particularly in midfield.  There's so little leadership in the side at the moment.
We don't 'do' experience.
Remember we were able to turn our nose up at the offer of Barry in the summer, because he doesn't fit our new model.

Should have been a penalty regardless of our performance.

Still, this has been terrible and I fear an absolute mauling against man u next game.

Fulham have had 20 shots, 8 on target. Pretty similar to Southampton game.

Yup.

As was the cast for most of last season.

Randy won't do what needs to be done.

The old chestnut of who could we bring in to replace Lambert will no doubt be the last line of defence.

Its times like this that I think Martinez might of been a GREAT option.

Oh well, time to watch 2 teams who play football in 40 mins.

The funny thing is that the most experienced midfielder we've had on the pitch today was our worst and least leaderly performance of the afternoon.

I don't know how much Everton are paying Gareth Barry but ........well, you know the rest.

I'm afraid you may be right: the kind of player I'm talking about wouldn't cost much in transfer fee but the wages would probably be higher than we're prepared to pay.  But someone of the experience of Scott Parker, for instance, would be so beneficial to us.  Or Petrov, sadly.

Parker, Barry, Nolan, Milner... all would do a job in our midfield.

Yes, and at least three of them are on wages that we just wouldn't pay

I think we do have enough players who are Premier League quality. Just the ones who are are woefully off form. Benteke has looked shite for a few games - he'll be back but at the moment it's not good. Same with Weimann. Same with Lowton. Same with Westwood. They're the footballing equivalent of the England Cricket team at the moment. A lot of good players off form and it needs to improve.

He was and he turned down an approach as he did with Liverpool because he wanted to stay at Wigan. He only took the Everton job once it was vacated and Wigan had gone down.

We never make anything look easy, or comfortable when we attack. It's desperate and hopeful(hopeless). We've been totally outclassed today. Parker might be past his best but he's been excellent today. He's premiership quality. Sidwells a solid player and has done well. KEA and Westwood are nowhere near Prem level. Not even within a country mile.

The warning signs have been there for the last few months. Carry on as clueless, desperate and huff and puff as we were, and results would eventually flounder.

Tonev is a fucking poor excuse for a footballer.
I'm not sure what he is meant to bring to the team but you get what you pay for & we pay fuck all.

Our results have been better than our performances. Anyone who watches us knows we are a shit to watch, totally reliant on the one or two quality players we have. Unless we buy some quality we are going to need every one of those points come May.

Mike Dean - twat.

I would. Doesn't look arsed, right now wouldn't care if he went in January. Give Kozák the CF spot.

Go all out for Fischer, Kiyotake and maybe one other.

Centre back on loan too.

Central defender and central midfielder with experience, leadership and an exceptable level of quality is pretty much all it needs. Been saying it for 18 months, maybe longer but i'll say it again anyway.

Shame the player who could do both roles is playing at Highbury at this very moment
