Only change would have been Lowton for El Ahamadi with Bacuna in his position. They're shit, let's rub their noses in it and have a comfortable home game for once.

That Sunderland back four is fucking slow and gash. And Mannone is a big step down on Mignolet. If we start with a positive attitude and really go at this lot we'll get the result.

I like that team.  If we play well we'll win.  And given how shite Sunderland are, if we play like arseholes we may still win.

Quite.  You'd have thought he ticked all the boxes for them as a midfielder:

1) good engine
2) combative
3) chips in with goals
4) isn't Cattermole

Couple of years ago I took my mom into the just done up Holte Pub for a meal.  She had chicken wrapped in panchetta on a bed of mash and spinach, it looked really nice.  When the waitress had gone she looked at me and said 'where's the fucking veg?' totally out of character for my mom to swear but then i realised that a large glass of wine in a tiny 80 year old body did not mix too well.
She was asleep in the car before we got out of the car park...

We still haven't mastered the art of passing a football, so we frequently lump it and lose it. Then we have to chase it back. We're going to tire easily the longer we go without a goal.

The inability to even get simple 5 yard passes right is fucking frightening at this level. There's non league sides who could teach us a thing or two about ball retention, or at least we could read "The dummies guide to passing a ball 5 yards."

Good first 5 minutes.
Very average next 15 minutes.
Woefull final 25 minutes.

Another very poor first half from us. I know we will get a stream of posts tonight about the project and building and time but on the pitch there is very little quality, no composure and no brains.

Benteke has been terrible today, he has barely showed for the ball.

Luna is poor. Benteke is either still not fit or just no at it at the moment. Kea prob the weakest of the midfielders. Otherwise not too shabby individually but as a team we have lost momentum through the players mentioned, benteke particularly making poor decisions and not forcing errors when Sunderland started with visible nerves.

I'm beginning to wonder if we should have cashed in on Benteke in the summer.

Being honest, he is playing like somebody who either doesn't want to be here or just can't be arsed now he has a bigger contract.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland Match Thread
Post by: Rigadon on November 30, 2013, 03:51:11 PM
A poor half of football after the 1st 5 minutes of promising endeavour.

Our fullbacks aren't quite good enough defensively, the midfield lacks creative spark and Benteke is desperate for a goal.

Ho hum.

We'll have a better second half I'm sure.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland Match Thread
Post by: supertom on November 30, 2013, 03:53:09 PM
We've seriously got to rethink the ethos at the club. We lack a bit of quality. If we get into a run of shit games like Cardiff and West Brom, which go against us, instead of for us, we could find ourselves in trouble again. That little bit of luck we had in some games won't always happen. We can't always be poor put pull off results from one moment when we get a free kick or the ball drops nicely and the game turns. These things will even themselves out and things will go against us. We need to start properly dominating games.

We've got to buy quality in January.

As for Benteke, he just looks increasingly like he's wishing he'd forced a move through in the summer. It doesn't look purely a confidence or fitness issue. He's not working hard enough and doesn't seem too bothered.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Sunderland Match Thread
Post by: Steve R on November 30, 2013, 03:53:41 PM
Sunderland are doing a great job of closing us down. Our lack of technique really doesn't help. Delph and Westwood have played well, and Weimann has looked lively. Bacuna is not a full back.

As always we give the ball up very easily. You have to win to justify the way we play. Unless something changes or we get lucky we're not going to win.

433 rarely works at home - need Lowton on and push bacuna forward into midfield - Weimann has looked well off the pace - really poor half - lets hope we deliver in the 2 nd half as we usually play for 45 minutes.

Benteke and Agbonlahor have been awful. What's wrong with them.

carrying a bit of timber it seems and Weimann maybe aswell.

After Baker I cant think of a player in our squad with a worse first touch than Weimann.

Disappointing really and Sunderland clearly the better side as the half wore on.

Hopefully they will end up regretting that sitter. We are poor in quite a few areas but our lack of presence in midfield is worrying. Sunderland look very dangerous on the counterattack and Clark has made quite a few key interceptions.

Still think if we can score first they will collapse but looks like it will take a fluke or a mistake for us to score today.

Id bring Lowton on at the break see if he can add anything going forward. Bacuna isnt going well today either so either hook him or get Kea off.

I appreciate that you can't win 'em all, and you can't always play good football, sometimes you have to grind out a result and all that. And of course, we're in a transitional phase with a young squad.

But it would be really nice if now and again we could actually produce something other than utterly dire football for more than about 10 minutes of a match.

Two wingers? I hope so. It's not subtle, but the last effective side this club had was with two wingers under O Neill.

This is the start of a tricky period for Lambert concerning the fans. He'shad it very easy so far. But 1 point or less today and the fans will be be booing and be demanding more, especially at home. I think that unless there's a marked improvement he'll lose the fans fairly quickly.

I see young, very average players with not many stand out attributes being led by a manager who is learning how to be a premier league manager.

I am convinced they are! Technical limitations yes but for me they are playing for him. Did we just lose the last 4? I  was very disappointed today but not surprised, having watched them for many many years I am used to us struggling against teams we are bound to beat, I just knew Sunderland would start to improve a tad under a new manager. I have just one main concern after today, Benteke worried me, is it just confidence? Movement was the worst I have seen from him.

Positive spin on things...cause I am royally pissed off with the cretins behind me who slag players off before they even come on...we are playing crap with no fluidity and yet we still getting results not a great one, but a point on the board and we are no where near danger, nor will we be. It will click, we will get players and we go again.
