It's a rather long read.
Karl Court
Dear readers of this article,
I am Stephen Staunton who very proudly played for Aston Villa Football Cub. I write as the joint founder of the Lions & Legends Association. I have been made aware of the following message on Facebook and I am not prepared to allow it to remain without response. This is a long overdue opportunity for us to tell you why Lions & Legends have been formed and of the success it enjoys. The message reads:
ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISING EVENTS
Wendy Anita > ASTON VILLA FORMER PLAYERS ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISING EVENTS
“For a period of time, there have been several posts on Facebook denigrating the Aston Villa FPA and the Aston Villa Old Stars football team. Our policy has been to ignore these and let our activities and actions speak for themselves. However, when a post last Wednesday by James Roach alleges wrongdoing within the Aston Villa FPA, we cannot ignore this serious allegation that is wholly untrue and potentially libellous. We are fully aware that a very small group of disaffected former players has set up a Lions & Legends organisation to rival the Aston Villa FPA and the Aston Villa Old Stars football team that have been doing great work for 20 and 54 years respectively. The Aston Villa FPA continues to enjoy the support of Aston Villa former players from the 1940’s to 2000’s, bar the very small number that comprise the core of Lions & Legends. The Aston Villa FPA is an open and transparent organisation whose core purpose has always been to provide essential health & welfare support to former players in need, whilst the Aston Villa Old Stars football team has to date raised well over £5 million for charities. It is run by a strong representative management team that includes former players John Donnelly, Neil Rioch, David Norton, Mark Kinsella, Mark Draper, Tony Daley, Gareth Farrelly, Jon Pearson, Derek Dudley, Charlie Aitken and Peter McParland among others. The Aston Villa FPA will maintain its integrity at all times and rise above the smear tactics employed by misguided and misinformed opponents. However, we cannot allow serious allegations that are potentially libellous to continue unchecked and we will take necessary action where appropriate.” Aston Villa FPA management team.
It is not the wish of Lions & Legends to have bought our disagreement with the AVFPA into the public domain in this way, but now we have no choice but to respond. Please allow me to state some facts to enable you to reach your own conclusions as to why we walked away from the AVFPA. You should know that its management team is self-appointed, self-governed and in my opinion not transparent. Its core purpose is also disputed and I challenge it. If the players are at the core of what it does, why not stand down and hand it to the players or bring into the open all of the issues ex-players have, instead of the one sided slant currently given.
I do not know the gentleman referred to in the statement released and the ex-players at the head of Lions & Legends have no idea what has been said. Whatever it is, it is not from Lions & Legends, although the above statement appears to be constructed to indicate that it is. Why mention Lions & Legends if not?
Lions & Legends were formed, along with my own foundation, because a number of high profile players had become deeply disillusioned with The AVFPA and the way it operated. To be clear, it is a company and not a charity and has never been so, with one shareholder, Neil Rioch.
The AVFPA claims it is run for the health and welfare of former players. It has only the ex-players as its vehicle to achieve this, yet when the players wanted a say and asked for the detail of what moneys came in and what went out, it was ignored. This was not acceptable to many who gave their time and reputations to that association.
We see the AVFPA makes a claim that it has raised £5,000,000 (million) pounds for charity. We have asked before for proof of this, but have never been shown it, not forgetting it is our names and reputations that have been used to achieve all that the AVFPA claims to have achieved. Should one player wish for this information, never mind a group of high profile ex –players, then surely it should be provided. Our group is not swayed from this opinion.
Led by Ken McNaught (who used to work for the AVFPA, but left because of the way it was managed and its actions) Lions & Legends now does what the players who support it required the previous incumbent of their trust, the AVFPA, to do.
The following wording within the statement to which I refer, apparently signed by the Management of the Aston Villa FPA, demonstrates the disrespect the AVFPA has for the ex-players associated with Lions & Legends and their considerable achievements in the football world. It reads,
“We are fully aware that a very small group of ‘disaffected’ former players” etc. The definition of disaffected is: discontented and resentful especially against authority: rebellious. Who are we supposed to be resentful against? How are we rebellious?
Let me tell you who that very small group of ‘disaffected players’ are, who, you should know, have written, through a lawyer, to instruct the AVFPA to no longer use the images or names to promote its business and to disassociate themselves totally from the actions of the AVFPA Those ‘disaffected’ players are :
Ken McNaught, Peter Withe, Gordon Cowans, Colin Gibson, Nigel Spink, Gary Shaw, Tony Morley, Des Bremner, Allan Evans, Kenny Swain, Dennis Mortimer, Pat Heard, Jimmy Rimmer, Dave Geddis, Shaun Teale and of course myself, Stephen Staunton.
To see European Cup Winners, League Championship Winners, League Cup winners and proven full internationals referred to as ‘disaffected players’ is a slur on what we achieved and the support the wonderful public gave us. We have minds of our own and therefore have control over our own destiny. A full and unreserved apology is expected.
Lions & Legends do not take sides. Any ex player can approach us and if we can we help, we will. The same applies to all charities and good causes. I would like to ask anyone, not just the AVFPA, when did John Donnelly and John Pearson actually play for Aston Villa Football Club and in how many games?
The Stephen Staunton Foundation, supported by the Lions & Legends, held a considerable event in Marbella this year and raised 33,000 euros for Children with Cancer. None of the players or celebrities attending asked for any money and their travelling expenses were met by the Party hosted by the Lions & Legends last Christmas to cover the expenses of the ex-Aston Villa Players involved. The other ex-players and celebrities costs were covered by Blackstar Sports of Mayfair, with whom we closely work and who have been tremendous supporters of what we do.
The Marbella event was supported by no less than: Harry Redknapp, Ron Atkinson, comedian Stan Boardman, Niall Quinn, Aaron James, Dean Smith, Larry Lloyd, John Gidman, Kevin Moran, Ken McNaught, Gary Shaw, Gordon Cowans, singers Tres Divos and Mel Williams, as well of course myself. Apologies if anyone has been left off the list. The letter of recognition from CWC is available to anyone who would like a copy.
The Lions & Legends Christmas Party was supported and attended by : Andy Blair, Pat Heard, Kenny Swain, Colin Gibson, Peter Withe, Brendon Ormsby, Gordon Cowans, Tony Morley, Gary Shaw, Tony Daley, Nigel Spink, Garry Thompson, Mark Walters, Gavin Price, Martin Carruthers, Gary Williams, Shaun Teale, Brian Little myself and over 300 paying guests. I apologise if I have forgotten anyone, but you can clearly see the belief there is in what we do.
When Ken McNaught left AVFPA, many players, including me, wanted him to continue with what he had started at the AVFPA, promoting the interests of the ex-players and what they wished to see happen. Many of us pushed him into heading an association that allowed us a voice, both within Aston Villa Football Club and of course in public. With this knowledge, AVFPA wrote two legal letters to Ken in an attempt to stop him doing what we, the ex-players, wanted him to do.
It should also be noted that the AVFPA continued to use Ken’s image, without his permission, whilst pursuing him in this ridiculous action. Of course the letters had no substance – other than to cause upset for Ken and his family - and went no further. Was this acting in the best interests of a caring ex-player?
Ken was on a considerable salary with the AVFPA, plus expenses and a company car. He walked away from all of that to do what he believed - and many ex-players firmly believed - to be the ‘right thing’ for ex-players.
The club have been magnificent. They are not in judgement, but listen to what Lions & Legends have had to say and have supported all that Lions & Legends and my foundation have done and are doing. Because of our work with the club, ex-players now have an enhanced deal for match day appearances at the club and more is being worked upon together. Ken, Peter Withe, Gordon Cowans and I presented the prizes after the excellent Aston Villa Golf Day at the Forest of Arden last Tuesday.
Lions & Legends were also asked to attend a fun day to mark the retirement of Sir Mervin King from the Bank of England. They did, paid their own way and provided a team to play to help celebrate the day. Paul Faulkner ‘turned out’ alongside ex-players, but poses no threat to any current first team player!
Lions & Legends and the Stephen Staunton Foundation have worked hand in hand to enhance a number of high profile charity days. This year they have funded their own way to attend, The Bev Bevan Charity Day, the Tony Christie Charity day, St Mary’s Hospice Golf Day, Dreams Charity Day, Help Leukaemia event and more, as well as the many matches it has played for charities and good causes, supplying HIGH PROFILE ex-players and winners. L&L provided the team to play at Halesowen last November for the Stiliyan Petrov Day, attended by Stiliyan, Ashley Young and Gareth Barry.
You may have seen that both L&L and SSF were heavily involved in the Help Harry, Help others bike ride and football match last weekend. All associated are very proud of what we do and, we are having fun doing it.
Because of what has happened, we now intend to host an informal meet the ex-players event in the very near future. We will ‘post’ the details as soon as they are agreed and there will be the formal opportunity for you to ask what ever question you wish appertaining to the L&L / SSF activity. In the meantime, if there are any questions, please send them through.
The following events are all being staged at Aston Wood Golf Club, Blake Street, Sutton Coldfield, in the marquee there. Wonderful people and again tremendous supporters of what we do.;
There are a few tickets remaining for my Autumn Ball on the 18th October, with Sing Out Sisters, Stan Boardman a meal and a disco. The benefiting charities are the Dogs for the Disabled and the Norman Laud Association. We will all be supporting an event on the 22nd November, with the magnificent Tres Divos from Spain and the Lions & Legends Christmas Party will be on the 27th December this year. Details will be published as soon as finalised.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
Best regards from all at Lions & Legends Association and the Stephen Staunton Foundation.

Just about to post this myself. Can anyone shed any light on what has transpired?
-
Same article as above is here
http://www.lionsandlegends.co.uk/article.asp?a=972
its a little bit easier on the eyes.
-
Christ this is bloody awful. Is Neil Rioch going to reply to Steve Stauntons letter. The Villa old stars have been going for over forty years without seemingly any problems. Does Dave have any inside info on this situation?
-
It's all a bit depressing. Which team does Balaban play for? I'll support them.
-
Staunton was always a moody bugger but its horrible to see dirty linen from the old boys being aired like this.
They all do it for a love of the club and charitable causes so it is not nice to see that become politicised.
-
The AVFPA player age has got younger, maybe there is an ego problem or two!
-
Very sad - please sort it out behind closed doors lads.
-

I'm sure that is true, but the implication from the words above might question that.
-
This is getting very nasty on Facebook. Accusations are being made and it is not pretty.

Sounds like Jeremy Kyle.

I have wondered why there are two different ex-villa players associations on the go.

Splitters!
-
I Haven't read the article and don't intend to.
Aston Villa to me has always represented class and integrity.
Hopefully the two sides understand this and sort out their differences with the class the club has always shown

Only that it's been brewing for a long while and will be covered in the Mail tomorrow.
-
Could be worse, could be the Mercury.
-
Who's Gavin Price?
-
Er, is that really Steve Staunton? Last time I saw the poor fella he was taciturn and hapless as manager of Ireland. I can't imagine him being so verbose - in mouth or quill.
What gives, exactly?
-
If the AVFPA is run by a self appointed board then i would find that troublesome. all members shoud be elected and it seems transparancy isn't big on the agenda. That is if the letter is accurate.

Steve Staunton = tit.
Shame he was a top player for us.
-
The AVFPA couldn't organise a gang-bang in a brothel.
-
Can anyone in the know provide a balanced version of what's happening here? In 1 paragraph.
-
It would appear that Ken McNaught was high up in the AVFPA but didn't agree with how it was run. He quit on principal, despite being well paid for his services, and set up the Lions and Legends with Steve Staunton. A lot of former AVFPA players and former Villa players who weren't fit to play but showed their support are now part of the Lions and Legends. The AVFPA now appears to be made up of 'new faces'. Since Neil Rioch has been the main man for the AVPFA for years and is specifically mentioned in the statement, it would appear criticisms of how it is run are mainly aimed at him.
-
I alays thought Neil Rioch did a good job? No?
Are we talking about his role in the FPA?
-
I am only summing up my personal conclusions formed after reading the statement. I'm not ITK. Although a few years back I wanted to donate a ton to the charity the AVFPA were playing for that day in return for one of the old stars shirts. When approached, Neil Rioch bluntly said no. I donated the money anyway and when the old star in question found out he seemed less than impressed with Rioch. He then went out of his way to make sure I got a shirt. That former player happens to be one of the ones who has now left the AVFPA to join the Lions and Legends.
-
In a nutshell, without any inside information, it would be appear that Ken McNaught wanted to take things in a different direction to those who have run the Villa Old Stars for some years and they obviously didnt like it. It would appear Ken has the backing of the European squad
who seem to agree with his ideas. Stephen Staunton (a touch of the Andy Coles it would seem!) has also got involved.
No doubt finance is the major factor in this disagreement or possibly ego's.
Its all rather disagreeable dont you think.
Interesting to hear what Neil Rioch has to say.
-
My mate played against Villa old stars a couple of weeks ago for the Harry Mosely charity, Staunton didn't even turn up and he was supposed to be there and he had been given a free car by MG
-
My take on it. http://thebirminghampress.com/2013/10/civil-war-in-b6/

Karl Court was, until last week, my supervisor at work.
-
Interesting to hear what Neil Rioch has to say.
I reckon that a Solicitor might hear from Neil first, judging by some of the accusations that he may wish to challenge.
-
If AVFPA is a company don't they have to file and publish annual accounts, and if so wouldn't that provide at least some of the transparency that is supposed to be in question?
Staunton's statement reminds me of that Harry Enfield Brummie character: "excuse me but I couldn't help noticing that my former players appear to be considerably more high profile than yowers"
-
Is someone suggesting financial mismanagement? If this is the case they had better be able to provide irrefutable evidence to their Law Firm to work with otherwise they could find themselves in a very difficult situation personally.

The statement by Staunton doesn't make such a suggestion, he just claims that (some of) the players want to know what has been raised and what the money has been spent on, and this has been refused. What has been said by this James Roach, and who he is, I have no idea though. And I don't have a facebook so I can't access his allegations, whatever they may be. Staunton says he doesn't know him.

Karl Court was, until last week, my supervisor at work.
Newcastle finally managed to get rid of him then.

Why no longer? I've known Courty for years. Great guy who always sorted me out a ticket when I needed one.

From The Evening Mail
Wife of Neil Rioch says player association row is 'killing' her husband
Lynee Rioch revealed her partner had attended hospital and shed five stone since the feud began
The devastated wife of former Villa star Neil Rioch has hit out at a bitter legal dispute between rival ex-player associations to warn: ‘‘This row is killing my husband.’’
Loyal Lynne Rioch revealed her partner had lost FIVE STONE and attended hospital since the feud began between his group, Aston Villa Former Players’ Association, and the breakaway faction, Lions and Legends – which includes members of the 1982 European Cup winning side.
The bitter war of words went public this week, with both sides releasing online statements, as revealed exclusively in the Birmingham Mail.
Mum-of-two Lynne, 57, slammed internet comments made against her husband’s group.
“It’s horrible. It’s vile,’’ she said.
The ill-feeling between the two camps has turned ugly following demands for greater transparency over AVFPA’s charitable deeds.
Lions’ leading light and ex-Villa star Steve Staunton has publicly asked for proof of their rival’s proud boast to have raised £5 million for charity.
But the dispute has taken its toll on Rioch, 62, said Lynne, his wife of 30 years.
“It is killing Neil, all this, because he is the most trustworthy person you could meet. This has devastated my family. It is horrible,” she said.
Lynne spoke out after news the rift between the newly set-up Lions and AVFPA, set up by Rioch 20 years ago, is now so wide solicitors letters have been exchanged.
The dispute between two groups who raise cash for charity to help former terrace heroes who have fallen on hard times, is complex and acrimonious.
The Lions and Legends were set-up by former AVFPA member Ken McNaught last year. The breakaway group includes Steve Staunton, Peter Withe, Gordon Cowans, Gary Shaw, Dennis Mortimer and Jimmy Rimmer.
Staunton says some members have taken legal action to ensure their names are not used to promote AVFPA.
Aston Villa Former Players Association was set up 20 years ago by chief executive Rioch and the Old Stars team. Members include Tony Daley, Charlie Aitken, Peter McParland, David Norton and Mark Draper. The dispute has been cranked-up on the internet.
Former Irish international Staunton has publicly spoken of the “deep disillusionment” felt by some ex-Villa stars towards an alleged lack of transparency by AVFPA. The Lions have demanded Rioch’s group provide evidence of their boast of raising £5 million to charity.
Yesterday Lynn stressed she would not allow her husband’s reputation and health to be ruined. She said: “It is horrible because there is nothing I can do (to stop this). My husband doesn’t get paid. He does it for the sheer love of it.
“It is about one man who is after Neil’s blood. It is killing him. He has to go next week to hospital again. He has lost five stone. Don’t they realise the £5 million goes to the charities they (the Old Stars) play the matches for?
“He is my husband and I know nothing untoward has gone on. I will stake my life and my daughters’ lives on that. My youngest daughter is beside herself. She has defended her father on Facebook.”
Fighting back tears, Lynne added: “People were friends and they have just turned and thought they could do it better and they are ruining my husband’s reputation and integrity and I am not having it. I am not having it.
“We went to Bulgaria and played for children with leukaemia and raised £70,000. We are not charity status, but everything we do is for charity. Neil would never do a wrong thing to anyone. He is the most kindest, genuine person.”
The bad blood thickened after AVFPA issued a statement following “wholly untrue and potentially libellous” comments were said to have been posted on the net.
The statement pledged: “The Aston Villa FPA is an open and transparent organisation whose core purpose has always been to provide essential health and welfare support to former players in need, whilst the Aston Villa Old Stars football team has to date raised well over £5 million for charities.”
It added: “The Aston Villa FPA will maintain its integrity at all times and rise above the smear tactics employed by misguided and misinformed opponents. However, we cannot allow serious allegations that are potentially libellous to continue unchecked and we will take necessary action where appropriate.’’
In the statement, AVFPA also labelled its rival organisation as a ‘very small group of disaffected former players’.
But the comments brought a swift response from former claret and blue captain Staunton, who won two League Cups with the Premier League club. He demanded an apology and maintained Lions and Legends were not behind the Facebook smear.
In a long response, the former Republic of Ireland boss said: “Lions and Legends were formed, along with my own foundation, because a number of high profile players had become deeply disillusioned with the AVFPA and the way it operated.
“The AVFPA claims it is run for the health and welfare of former players. It has only the ex-players as its vehicle to achieve this, yet when the players wanted a say and asked for the detail of what money came in and what went out, it was ignored. This was not acceptable to many who gave their time and reputations to that association. We see the AVFPA makes a claim that it has raised £5,000,000 for charity. We have asked before for proof of this, but have never been shown it, not forgetting it is our names and reputations that have been used to achieve all the AVFPA claims to have achieved.’’
He added: “To see European Cup Winners, League Championship Winners, League Cup winners and proven full internationals referred to as ‘disaffected players’` is slur on what we achieved and the support the wonderful public gave us. A full and unreserved apology is expected.”
McNaught, who gained European Cup and European Super Cup medals with Villa, was less forthright when The Mail approached him. He did reveal, however, he had received legal letters from AVFPA.
The 58-year-old added: “We are just doing what we set out to do. What the other group want to get up to, is up to them.”
Aston Villa FC declined to comment.

yeah just seen it on my lunch break....
-
I used to work with Neil Rioch's daughter and once, when in town for an Xmas drink with her and other colleagues, bumped into Neil and many ex players having a drink in the Mailbox. He bought us all drinks and seemed a lovely person, as is his daughter.
-
Can't see this ending well.

Another story about Teale's wife being nuts from 'Appy 'Arry. Just throw her into the middle of this and let her sort them out.

In a nutshell, what's going on here then?

A great deal of it has vanished from Facebook. Too late for some, I think.
-
How sad to see your heroes (and villains) squabbling.
-
I just read the exchange between Chris Price and Shaun Teale. To be honest, I didn't understand a word. Footballers eh?
-

Now we are getting all manner of posts on Facebook, by the original perpetrators, that try to look as though they have been penned by legal people, starting with 'without prejudice', for example, but then going on to make loads of howlers.

It's a bit like thinking the word 'allegedly' is some sort of magic bullet that wards off libel writs.

It is, allegedly. :D
-
It all sounds very confused but not half as confused as the Villa Lions & Legends logo and website. It's a very long time since I've seen anything that bad.
-
It's very hard to like Steve Staunton.
And Stephen Staunton, for that matter.
-
Seems like the Judean People's Front and The People's Front of Judea to me.
-
I just read the exchange between Chris Price and Shaun Teale. To be honest, I didn't understand a word. Footballers eh?
It would appear Chris got help when needed from the AVFPA and Shaun who suffered a recent serious back injury go no help at all.
Obviously they have very differing views of the AVFPA but are still mates.
-
LL have released a further statement, it's a fortnight long.
-
It is a dreadful situation where supporters of the Club are drawn towards siding with one faction or another.
The Club need to sort this out. In my view, we should go back to how it was with there just being the Villa Old Stars. Surely the Club must control who runs something like this.
It is getting to an 'I am a bigger ex-player than you' situation, which is a poor thing when some of the former players with a lesser playing record than others have genuinely turned out for the Old Stars for years before this sudden era of former players holding sports forums every weekend commenced.

Maybe at the next game we'll get chants in support of each - a bit like the old Rangers-Celtic and Left Side-Right Side chants.
Or, maybe not.
As others say, it's all a bit sad and cetainly tawdry.
-
It would be interesting to see what would happen if one of the groups, particularly the FPA, happened upon an enormous fundraiser. Would we see those who have walked away from it sidling back in with the others? Are they going to canvass all former players to find who, if either group, they are with so that they can draw on funds from the one they are with but not the other.
-
It's all a bit life of Brian isn't it?
-
It's a bit embarrassing that they've made it public. Also everyone deep down knows that players who turn out for charity games etc get appearance money but we'd like to think that they do it for charity first and foremost. So it's particularly sad to see that they've made it such a public spat over how much money ex players earn. It's all about the money even when they've retired and it's all very shoddy indeed.

Sad to this kind of squabbling so publicly .

Chris Price and Shaun Teale are having an argument about this now on Facebook.
With each other? I have not seen this.
Could just be a local non-league spat between current Southport manager and ex Burscough manager - they are very passionate about their football up here in Lancashire - VCTM jnr goes to school with Staunton Jnr - I will see if I can get any gossip :)
No, its a proper debate over the FPA & L&L. Quite interesting to spectate.

This can only be resolved with a match between the warring factions before the next home game, i'll support whichever team Sid's on. Or a tickling competition.
