I like that he's not just blindly sticking with a tactic which worked and changing it to suit the game we're playing - Baker does not deserve to be dropped, but the tactically correct move is to return to 4-3-3 and therefore Baker has to make do. I like it.

Also, that midfield should be looking to dominate possession, or at least to try and prevent Thuddlestone from doing so.

Fuck me. Are you post something positive this morning? You'd think we were sitting in the bottom three on the back of consecutive batterings, not wins.

No Lowton and no Helenius either. And that is the midfield which looked unbalanced against Newcastle.

Got to think Helenius and Lowton have knocks? Or something has happened with Lowton and he is not a happy boy at the minute.

Not so much unbalanced as crap - and they must have had strains in their necks from seeing the ball fly over their heads in the vague direction of Forwards.

Wouldn't be surprised if it turns out being a 4231, with Westwood and KEA anchoring and Gabby, Delph, Weimann slightly advanced.  I think if we put Delph (pace and tenacity) directly against Huddlestone (their playmaker, but painfully slow) then we could stop them from playing.

We're making this harder than it should be. Westwood and KEA shouldn't be in the same midfield.

That's what I thought, but then KEA played further forward against City in That Second Half and did very well, so maybe that will be a good solution for now until we get a properly creative number 10 type.

Edit: Dants, I agree but like I say, I think it'd be KEA forward rather than Delph.

We are playing Hull right? Given some of the posts I was thinking it was Man City away or something.

I realise they've started reasonably well this season but have a little bit of confidence lads. Our midfield will be fine and with Gabby back they can't push up as much as they might like.

My take on it:

Bacuna needs to push on down the line. Has he made a forward pass yet?
Weimann needs to sort his head out this season, his cigar is out. Little movement and zero threat.
Balls up to Kozak need to be better and Kozak needs to win a header and hold it up better.
Better interchange between Delph, El Ahmadi, Agbonlahor and Wiemann
Title: Re: Hull City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on October 05, 2013, 03:53:20 PM
Not to bad so far. Gabby's causing problems. Andy and Kojak are very quiet today. Perhaps an ideal game to bring Tonev into? He's got the ability to just run at people and get a shot away. Wiemann in all honesty looks lost playing on the wing. He's a filler there. He doesn't have the technique or dribbling ability to be effective enough.

Westwood needs to come off I think. We just need to up the pace in midfield a bit. He's done okay today, but just looks intent on getting himself sent off. I'd bring on Sylla to provide some energy.

Other than Sylla and Tonev there's not really anyone on the bench who can change the game.

As for Kozak again. If he's just waiting for service then his Villa career will only end one way. Just ask Darren Bent. He's got to put himself about a bit more. Davies has had it easy so far.

We won't play too many worse sides than Hull this season. They have looked really average. Longer the half went on the more we were dragged down to their level. Proactive substitutions wouldn't be Lamberts strength but he needs to change it up top badly. We get the first goal here and we will win comfortably

I'd be tempted to go 4-4-1-1/ 4-2-3-1. Put Wiemann in behind Kozak again. I think long term Wiemann is a mediocre right winger. He filled in reasonably well last season but long term the lad has to be playing through the middle.

I'd then bring Tonev on for Westwood and play him on the right.

Kozak looks a pretty crap player to me.

He looks a yard too slow to be really effective in the prem, but I don't think the long ball is his strength to be honest.

3-5-2 might actually work for us here you know.

Yea I have no doubt that isn't part of it, but I don't see any technical quality so far and that has nothing to do with time and adjustment...you either have it or not. He hasn't won a header, he's not quick, he isn't holding the ball up, things no one here can say he is doing....so my opinion is he doesnt look good enough.

Why not? The price doesn't dictate whether a player should be ready or not. Spurs spent £30m on a forward this summer who doesn't start every game. I'm sure they hope long term Lamela will be worth every penny.

I'm not going to join in the moaning just yet to be honest. We've missed a few chances today for sure but we've created a lot more than Hull and 0-0 at this stage in the game is not worth complaining about too much in my opinion. I'm hopeful the changes we've made and the usual will to win could turn this in our favour rather than constantly complaining.

I agree. More than the central forward, we need players to genuine challenge those two who can become quite ordinary when they are marked well. Benteke is different class and creates a lot of space for them to be more effective.

a £7 million player , not ready ?

Why not? The price doesn't dictate whether a player should be ready or not. Spurs spent £30m on a forward this summer who doesn't start every game. I'm sure they hope long term Lamela will be worth every penny.
Toronto is positive energy in its purest form today.

Today is showing that Lambert made a mistake in signing Kozak, or at least in signing Kozak in place of the mythical number 10. Benteke or no Benteke, we'd be more likely to win this game with a number 10 than with Kozak, I'm afraid to say. And I actually like Libor.

I think he bought Kozak for long term not expecting Benteke to be out. He's thrown in him before he's ready. I think coming in once in a while for Benteke was the plan.

We needed backup for Benteke and Kozak is that. We now need 2 wide players, Tom Ince style, to challenge Weiman and Gabby. We need those options.

I agree. More than the central forward, we need players to genuine challenge those two who can become quite ordinary when they are marked well. Benteke is different class and creates a lot of space for them to be more effective.

Whatever we do with the forwards wide and central, we need that creative player who can dictate the tempo, find space for himself and others, play the final pass and be a goal threat. We're conspicuously lacking that player today.

Hello mate!

How are things? Very well, hopefully!

I have just moved to Tokyo this last week. All is well, look forward to seeing you if you're out this way. I still believe Bowery will grab the winner!

Not falling asleep just yet..haha. But I was hoping we would kick on after the City game....still time..
I guess it's not too late just after midnight. Next time Tokyo is in March. Anyway whatever happens in the last ten minutes there is always Roppongi!

For sure and the fact that we looked at that Japanese lad in Germany suggests the manager might feel the same way. Maybe we just didn't find the specific player we wanted this summer.
