An away banker, it might only be 0-1 but City will win.

These days Man U, Man C, Liverpool, Arsenal and now Chelsea and even Spurs never have an off day at Villa Park, but sometimes do at places like Southampton and Norwich  :-[

Those seem to be acceptable these days.  Really hope that we can get some fire in our belly but am dreading that we will have to keep looking at their rabble encroaching onto the pitch with no arrest ever being made.

Play like we did against Newcastle and we'll get a sound thrashing. We need to get back to the performances we delivered against Arsenal and Chelsea, but without Okore and Benteke I fear the worst. How depressing is it that I'll be strolling across Aston Park hoping we don't lose by too many. Gabby's perfect hat-trick against these seems light years away. Five years is proving to be an awful long time in football.

They've been poor away from home with 1 point out of Cardiff and Stoke and we've proved that we play better against the bigger teams; I can see us doing well. Not to mention they've got to play Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

2-1 Villa.

Post by: supertom on September 25, 2013, 01:20:10 PM
Can't see us scoring to be honest. I think this one will be a stroll in the (villa) park for City. They've got four top quality strikers to pick from, no matter who they want to rest, who would have field day against our backline.

Expects Milner to put one past us too.

City have banged in 9 goals in their last 2 games and will come here full of confidence - our home form is really poor and i fear a heavy beating is on the cards sadly.
We need to find a style of play that entertains and gives us chance of getting results at home as this home form has gone on far too long - we look a totally different team in away games.
Now with okore and benteke out for a long spell it looks a far more depressing scenario than a month ago :(
Forecast 0-4

The optimism of the first 3 games is now sadly a distant memory. Try as I might,I can't see anything but a comfortable 3 or 4-0 victory for Man City. Really can't see us scoring & the defensive frailties are still there for all to see.

Oh well,at least I can have a few beers before & after!!

We need a performance and result akin to the 2-0 doings of Chelsea a few years ago, just to break the mental block that Villa Park may have for our players.

We've certainly got to keep the ball a lot better. Westwood was poor against Newcastle, but it seems he was injured. Hopefully a two week rest up will allow him to come into the side match fit, as his ball retention and use is very good and we're quite sloppy with our play (rushed at times) when he isn't on form.

Delph and Sylla to partner him. I hope Gabby is fit. I think 4-3-3 is the way to go in this one.

Hoping for a draw but probably lose because that's what we do against the big spenders at Villa Park but can't see it being the hammering many on here are predicting. They lost at Cardiff and was goalless at Stoke so I expect us to give them a hard game.

Also (like a lot of other teams) they tend to perform well against the top teams and less well against those lower down the league.

I still think they'll win, but I wouldn't be totally shocked to see us snatch a draw or narrow victory.

Apart from their Champions League game they have not been fantastic away from home, they have not turned us over by vast scorelines in the last 3 seasons at VP and they have a big game on Tuesday. Not saying we'll win but a draw would not be a total suprise and I don't think it will be an absolute spanking.

Although, my other option was the Newcastle game and that was bad enough watching on the internet.
This trip is costing me a lot of money so please Villa boys, put in a bit of effort, please try and pass the ball to someone on your own team and please don't be an embarassement.

Who should we go for in midfield? Sylla, Delph and...? Al Achmady? We need as much brute force as possible to stop that lanky streak from the Cote d'Ivoire. If Ireland was still here, it might be the one game where he'd bust a gut.

2-4, Gabby with a sexy brace in vain.

I think he'll go Sylla, Delph and KEA.

Thats probably what I'd do tbh.

At this stage, Delph is pretty much a given.  Sylla we'll need to add a bit of strength (especially against the likes of Toure).  I know KEA has his detractors, but if nothing else you can rely on him to press and hassle the opposition when we dont have the ball, and at the moment he's better on the ball than Bacuna (who'll probably play at RB).

Can't really see any other result, they are starting to get in their stride and seem to enjoy playing at Villa Park, and we are still a little iffy in certain areas.

If we can get a draw having won at Norwich last week then that would be steady progress for me.

I'd be temped to play 4-4-2 and have bacuna wide midfield to help out Lowton- city are powerful in midfield and worry me. If we get overrun in midfield they will tear us apart.

If we play 4-4-2 we are absolutely guaranteed to get overrun in midfield. Our best chance is to crowd the centre.

I was thinking of bacuna, Delph kea and sylla as a midfield 4 with gabby and Kozak up front.

I don't think we can go with Weimann, gabby and Kozak against city .

So a diamond? Well, it'd help out the centre, but they'd just go wide with Navas and Nasri and their overlapping fullbacks and drag us all over VP. No, conservative, solid, 4-5-1/4-3-3 has to be the only way, and that front three have to work their bollocks off as well - particularly the wide two in getting back.

My prediction -
Villa beat Man City- everyone on here says we are brilliant and we are going to win the league. Paul Lambert is the best manager in the Preimer League.
Villa lose to Hull City - everyone on here says we are total shite and will be relegated. Paul Lambert hasn't got a clue.
Villa beat Spurs- everyone on here says we are brilliant and we are going to win the league. Paul Lambert is the best manager in the Preimer League.
Villa lose to Everton- everyone on here says we are total shite and will be relegated. Paul Lambert hasn't got a clue.
etc

I would use bacuna on the right of a midfield 4 to help out Lowton , certainly wouldn't go with a 433 at home to city , maybe a 451 which could be deemed a bit negative at home but considering the opposition would be acceptable.

At some point I'd like to see Bennett wide left in a midfield 4 as i think it might suit him better and also provide more cover for luna .

Off topic, but still on topic, does anyone know of any places to watch Villa games in Tokyo? I have just moved here and although often on this site, i have no idea how to post a thread of my own requesting knowledge of places to watch the game.

If someone can recommend places in Tokyo or teach me how to post a new thread, I'd be very much grateful! Cheers

I can see what you are saying, but unfortunately those occasions always seem to be away from home these days. I also agree with eastie that our problems on the left mean we should consider playing Bennett in front of Luna. I have actually swung today from being convinced we would lose to fancying us for a draw. And I haven't had a drink yet.

What are we worrying about? ."............
Aston Villa v Manchester City - referee: Mike Jones M1, YC2, RC1, PK1.
Jones steps out for just his second top flight game of the season and has Aston Villa, who he has refereed in 10 Premier League games since he got onto the select group referees list. They are yet to lose.
That’s quite a sequence for a team who lose their fair share of games, and Jones was in charge when they lost narrowly at Arsenal in an FA Cup tie two years ago. Given that Jones also sent off City’s Samir Nasri and Gareth Barry in 2012 and you might fancy an unexpected home win......

Sorted then

Aguero missing for them is a slight boost. However, I'm very worried about the prospect of Yaya Toure running the midfield and making our guys look like amateurs. Need a big shift in there from Delph and Sylla, keep things tight and look to play on the counter. A 1-1 draw is possible, however my head is saying a 3-1 defeat.

Got to start Sylla, Delph and Westwood in the middle for me. Then Weimann and Albrighton on the flanks and Gabby up on his own IMO. We need to play to feet and on the counter, not launch it to the big man.

I like this idea, though there is an argument for Kozak's abrasive hard-work. But Albrighton looks sharp and motivated, and speed on the break might be our saviour - and Kozak, for all his good qualities, is not quick.

I think if they don't score within the fist 15 we can make this very difficult for them. Personally I wouldn't start Kozak:

Guzan
Lowton Clark Vlaar Luna
Bacuna Delph Kea
Albrighton Gabby Weimann

My thinking here being that Bacuna can protect Lowton more than if we played Bacuna at right back and Sylla in the middle. Kea makes the team ahead of Sylla based on recent performances, especially against Spurs where I thought Sylla looked a bit headless chicken and I think we need to try to play it around Toure rather than out-muscle him. Kozak on the bench so we don't play it long and continually invite pressure on ourselves when it invariably bounces off him.

Having said all this I'm pretty sure Kozak will start.

I could see us getting spanked. On the other hand, citeh have been poor away from home this year and rested a few ahead of their last big CL game.

I think the most likely outcome is probably a 2-0 defeat.

Can't see us having too much goal threat. Perhaps Bacuna's set pieces will be a threat with Citeh having looked poor in defending set pieces so far this season.

But with kompany back I can see it being a difficult afternoon for kozak

More than their attacking ability it is Kompany and Toure that are the two players that make them so very solid. I still think we can get a draw out of this and with a bit of luck a win, but we don't match up well physically. We'll have to play very well to win this.

If we lose 4-0 but actually try to win the game and put some effort in, then, whilst defeat is always hard to take, I will walk away thinking that at least we gave it a go.

So, my prediction is 4-0. How we go about losing 4-0 is entirely down to the players.

Could be worth telling Delph just to go wherever Toure goes to try and stop him. However, one, that's not really Delphs game, two, he'd probably get himself sent off very quickly with his stupid tackles and three, he's the one player this season that has driven us on in games.
