Can't see anything other than a home win. Clearly we have not done anything to improve our defence and our midfield looks lacklustre and unimaginative.

I think it is key that Sylla comes back in. You can have instances then when he and and Westwood sit, giving Delph a bit more licence to get forward, as the kid is doing it all on his own at the moment.

I am not sure whether we will see a change to the forward line to be honest, as at Arsenal and Chelsea, we looked very good attacking wise hitting them on the break. Bacuna might consider himself unlucky not to come in for Lowton.
Title: Re: Norwich City v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Tuscans on September 16, 2013, 01:41:48 PM
The small amounts of Norwich I've seen they don't look a bad outfit. I think we'll lose if the same team, style and mentality goes there. With Okore certain to miss out I would go for this....

                                      Guzan

Bacuna         Baker                        Vlaar            Clark

                      Delph                     Sylla

                                  Helenius

Agbonlahor                  Benteke                      Tonev

Reasons for this are I would of dropped Lowton as I think he's been dreadful so far....could put Herd there maybe but I'm willing to give him one more game to shape up. Secondly Westwood for me offers little playing the deep midfielder so Im going to give Bacuna a chance. With Helenius he quoted he likes to play behind the front man and had some clever flicks and touches in pre season so I'll give him a try in the hole and see if he can do what we haven't. He might of scored a good goal against Arsenal but Luna looks very poor defensively for me so I'm going to give Clark a crack and lastly I'm dropping Weimann for Tonev on the basis I've never thought Andi looks majorly comfortable playing as a wide forward so I think we need to let Tonev try and reproduce some of his Youtube magic.

Bollocks, I forgot about Sylla....scrap that and put Bacuna in for Lowton and Sylla in Bacunas place.

I wouldn't have Clark at full back. I have visions of Barry at Reading.

We're an excellent away side, who have looked a bit clueless at home. We certianly need a central three, but the blend and balance has to be right.

I reckon he'll only make a couple of changes at the most, a replacement for Okore and Sylla for KEA. They've proved they're a decent side away from home so there's no need to change it around too much.

Agree with the changes and I'd consider Bacuna coming in for either Westwood or Lowton. It's vital that the players are aware if their performance is below par they won't be playing. I'm not sure Westwood, Weimann or Lowton believe that at the moment.

It's what we were both saying on Saturday after the game Paul. I really hope PL thinks the same. I want the 11 on the pitch to know their shirt is up for grabs if they don't perform and Weimann has this season to look anything like last seasons player. Gutted as I rate him but we can't keep carrying him.

Yep I believe Weimann is a talent and he can come back, but at the moment he doesn't warrant a place in the side. The same goes for Lowton and Westwood, but the former has the advantage that we didn't bother to sign any direct competition for him.

Blimey, talk about a mood swing from last week.

Our away form is fairly good, and our tactics actually work away from home.  Norwich have bought well, and are probably a better side than last season, but (despite being awful on saturday) so are we.  Still going to concede though!

The biggest criticism that Norwich fans seem to have is that Houghton is too negative, so them coming onto us is exactly what we want. The side we've seen so far is built to hurt teams on the break and I think we can again.

What we do about the remaining 17 home games though...

Are we getting the dream team of Gregory and McLeish in charge?

We look at Okore's injury and think "we may need a centre half on loan in January". Lambert looks at this and goes "we need a creative midfielder, maybe another striker given the extra goals we may concede".

I'd agree with that, apart from the part about Lambert wanting a creative midfielder. He'll sign another 6 ft 3 striker in Jan because Kozak or Helenius are cutting it! ;)

Why, when people play badly, do fans always jump straight to the conclusion that they don't care enough, or have got complacent? Especially players like Weimann, Westwood and Lowton. Surely it's must more likely that they've lost confidence, have had limitations exposed or haven't yet got into form? That doesn't mean they should necessarily keep their place

I do think this is a massive game though. Wouldn't want to lose four in a row going into our next run of games

I'd go:

Guzan - Lowton (lucky) vlaar Clark baker - sylla Westwood Delph - Weimann benteke gabby

If Tonev looks good enough in training, he could start ahead of Weimann

I'd like to see a starting line-up of:

Guzan

Vlaar
Clark
Luna
Westwood
Delph
Sylla
Benteke
Agbonlahor
Tonev

I like Weimann a lot but he has been off the boil for the last few games. Also I think Clark is more consistent than Baker.

Guzan - Bacuna - Vlaar - Clark - Baker???(Redmond threat??)

Sylla - Gardner - Delph

Tonev - Benteke - Gabby

Time for Lowton to be left out also KAE - left back is the problem spot Bennett got destroyed at Norwich last season but can Baker do any better in that position. I do think Luna would get torn apart by an in form Redmond as well. Westwood may be unlucky to be left out but Gardner's greater creativity i think warrants an opportunity. The side has been crying out for Sylla to come into it over last few games.
I dont think for one minute that PL will select Gardner but my opinion.

I agree with your team there, but I think he may give Andi another go at it. He should have bagged three league goals so far, as he missed two sitters against Chelsea and should have scored at the weekend.

Tonev looks nifty, but has a tendancy to drift in (argh!) from what I have seen. That seems more suited at home, when you want somebody moving in the lines between the opposition back four and midfield.

This game is a big test of character. We need to bounce back and show that we are more resilient than we were this time last year.

We're better away from home, so hoping for a win. Sylla should be back in, his energy helps us. Tbh Westwood was the worst midfielder last match, but would imagine he's more likely to drop El Ahmadi to make room for Sylla.

Lowton was poor as well, but is allowed the odd bad game I guess.

I'd actually completely change the shape, as I think we've become far too predictable to play against. I'm going 4-4-2, as follows;

Guzan; Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Luna; Agbonlahor, Westwood, Delph, Tonev; Kozak, Benteke.

Don't have much of a problem with that line up RussellC but I still think there is a place for Sylla - perhaps at the expense of Gabby, with the thinking that when we go 2 nil up and Norwich have to attack bring him on and get a couple more using the counter attack.

I will be, probably thankfully, otherwise engaged on Saturday. It could be painful to watch if we're losing and 3 points from 15 would be a wretched start indeed.

I think Norwich could have some joy against our full backs, but hopefully we can likewise. Is it too early to call this one a must win?

Sylla in for KEA, Tonev in for Andi, Clark to take Okore's place and keep the rest the same. We can't go changing huge swathes of the team at this stage (despite the Newcastle performance) and with Okore out let's not mess around with the back 4 too much. I think Helenius and Tonev both deserve a chance but we're very likely sticking to 4-3-3 as it does work away from home so let's get Tonev in there and hope him and Gabby can produce enough chances for Bentekknotronic. Sneaky feeling Delph is going to score as well. 1-2 Villa win.

Baker is made for this type of game really, he played very well against Holt at the back end of last season and is good in games where teams will go direct first and foremost.

Norwich have a better team than last season but are still a team most in the league would expect 4 points from over the season. We really should be winning this as we did win there twice last season so clearly Lambert is fired up for this game. I fear 2-2 though which will suddenly be a pretty underwhelming start to the season.

Good point SoccerHQ. I think I'd agree just on the basis that Baker is better aerially then Clark. Clearly with Norwich playing 4-4-2 much of their game-plan will revolve around their wingers getting balls into the box for their front two.

Holt doesn't play for Norwich anymore. It will be that Wolfswrinkles bloke up top and either Elmander or maybe Hooper coming in for his first game. It will be direct so I want Baker in there as he did well last 10 games of last season imo.

Oh, those Brazilians, you know? Circa 1970? Broke the mould. Theory out the window. Free expression of football. Uncategorisable. Is that a word? It is now! You know? Far cry from small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts. Rush goalie. Two at the back, three in the middle, four up front, one's gone home for his tea. Beans on toast? I'd like to see some wide midfielders slinging some crosses over, would probably go 4-4-2 with a front 6 of Bacuna Sylla Delph Tonev with Gabby and Benteke up top.  Stick one of the other big fellas on for Gabby in the second half.  One one, Benteke.

Go 4-4-1-1

Lowton Vlarr Clark Luna

Bacuna Delph Sylla Gabby

Tonev/ Helenius (whichever is looking better in training)

            Benteke

Gives some protection to our FBs which will hopefully mean that our CBs don't get dragged out of position as much

I'm in the same place. Though Norwich have only lost once in about 14 home games.

433 for me, with sylla offering more support for Lowton against Redmond.

Could easily go either way though

I've got a nasty feeling we might see benteke and kozak together which I just can't see working

Baker tends to get praised because of his last ditch lunging tackles, but they're as a result of his poor positioning.

Agree Paul and most would result in a red card in the modern game if his timing was slightly out.  The fact that he tends to do them in and around our penalty box is not good either.

I'd be tempted to stick with the 4-3-3 on Saturday, but try that formation against Spurs on Tuesday night.  Would probably switch Tonev and Gabby in the above line up though.

I agree we should keep the 433. We've generally looked good with it since feb - the most coherent and in form we've been for a few years. Plus we don't really have the wide players who are proven in wide midfield nor the centre midfielders who've proved they can really compete in a two in the middle.

Plus I don't really like the diamond

I just think the choices are Clark or baker; sylla / bacuna / kea and Tonev / Weimann / or maybe a little radically helenius in that position
Title: Re: Norwich City v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread

I think clark had looked decent this year. So I think I'd go clark / sylla / Weimann but with Tonev potentially coming in early. I just think he looks a bit scattergun at the moment

The frist goal is always key and we have given up the advantage every game so far this season. We need to start well here. We know we can win the game, we put six past them in two games at Carrow Road last season, but we need to cut out giving up a cheap goal.

One thing I remember from our last game there (apart from our goals and that superb Westie pass to Gabby) was Benteke getting really wound up by their defenders, notably Bassong. I hope Lambert has a word before the game. I'd also like to see Gabby have  a few runs through the middle like he did at Arsenal. A booking or two for Norwich defenders early on in the game wouldn't go a miss.

Oh and the ref is Chris Foy.

I hope we bring Sylla in, as his arrival coincided with a tightening up of our defence last season. He offer more protection which allows players like Lowton to get forward knowing they will be covered.
Lets not get gloomy everyone, it was a bad game on Saturday but we'll talk our way into a crisis if we aren't careful..

1-2 to the Villa.

Its a tough place to go to, but I think often we play better away from home and Norwich do have one or two issues which I think will edge the game in our favour.  Important to get something with City next in the league.

Bentake 24, Weinmann 38

Snodgrass 68

Can't see us keeping a clean sheet personally, they will be dangerous from set pieces.

Make no mistake as to the importance of this game, a defeat puts us well and truly in a rut.
Sylla simply has to start, I would drop Westwood personally, the added drive could make the difference.

Forget style, substance and all out attack for now, I'll take a clean sheet and a one- nil all day long.

Prediction reserved until I see the team sheet.

Both players have qualities, both have flaws or things they could work on. Both will need to step up their game and avoid thr mental errors that have affected their play. The worst thing about all of this is that Vlaar was looking better next to Okore. Collectively we will need to stay focused and for the best part of 12 months that has been the deficiency in our defensive play.

Baker and Clark don't have the excuse of lack experience now, they've had a whole season in the firing line. So like you say, the mental errors that were accepted last year to some degree won't be this year. If they haven't improved on last year, and don't perform better then they need to be moved on.

Of course they do. Football fans as sad twats has been a staple image since we all stopped being hooligans.

Unfortunately there will always be those willing to oblige in furthering that stereotype. Like the complete plonkers in Fulham kits today. Fuck me

Wonder if the team stayed at the Marriott Sprowston Manor? Nice hotel spa and golf course

I'm pretty confident that they weren't staying at the Travelodge by the bus station where I was. I'm glad that I brought my earplugs

There is something odd about waking up at half seven to drive a hundred and sixty odd miles, to stand outside a pub at half eleven.

We played at Norwich on New Years Day in the BFR years. A bunch of us all met at mine for a luxurious journey down in the back of a Land Rover. Everyone I opened the door to looked progressively worse than the previous person. I wasn't feeling too clever myself. One of our party proceeded to be ill out of the window art various points of the journey, which didn't help the rest of our delicate gang. I think it is fair to say that when we arrived none of us fancied a trip to the pub so we went straight into the ground.

Villa lost.

AVFC: Guzan, Bacuna, Clark, Vlaar, Luna, Delph, El Ahmadi, Tonev, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Benteke.
Subs: Steer, Baker, Albrighton, Sylla, Kozak, Helenius, Bennett.

No Lowton or Westwood, Bacuna RB it appears

Not sure on this team, looks like a 4-4-2 as Tonev in for Westwood and Bacuna playing RB.

Thinking a draw at best here unless Tonev can get the front trio into the game, Weimann is very fortunate to still be starting games as he has done very little this season, needs to do something positive today.

That midfield is a bit lightweight...

2-4 and a roller-coaster ride all the way. Lets hope we keep 11 on the pitch.

4-2-3-1, Gabby and Andi either side of Tonev I reckon.

Not much strength in midfield there  ???

Not the changes I thought would be made.

Has Sylla done something wrong?

Still confident we can get a win though.

Tenacity and strength aren't the same thing. You can have physical players that don't work hard or as a unit. Today those players need to close down Norwich when off the ball quickly and work together as a unit. Sylla must be lacking some fitness. I reckon we'll see him start on Tuesday.

The Werewolf is back, alive and kicking here in Norwich.

Where abouts ? Just a glimpse would make the weekend.....along with 3 points...UTV

Going towards Morrisons, opposite the ground.  And we got the three points.  Welcome back, Werewolf.
