We're warming up now, we should hopefully have 1-2 players back, and hopefully a bit of extra cutting edge in one of our senior attacking players. We're due a win, so I'll say we'll win.

We'll also get a clean sheet and people will stop worrying about our defensive frailties going into next season! ;)

3-0 Villa. Westy, Bacuna mattata, Grealish.

Nil nil. We defend stoically for ninety minutes. Vlaar and Baker clear everything including 27 corners. Which gives us the new worry of how come our midfield is so over-run by Crewe.

Does Dario Grady still have anything to do with them? I got a bit confused for a while back there, he was always resigning then being re-employed.

I thought we called these things "monster" threads?  *confused*

Anyway, I wonder if Lambert and his scouts will be compiling a dosier on the Crewe side for future reference?

My first visit to Gresty Road (or whatever it's called now). I'll go for 2-2. Benteke and Lowton.

Think they will be a little embarrased over the Luton result, and feel that this is our first pre season win.

Would love to take a 0-2 win, but with pollyfilla Ron on top form I'll go for a 1-2 victory (Benteke both goals)

I think he implied that a few of the crocks would be ready for Friday, but not all. Weimann's out for a week or two more.

1-0 to them.

Agent Westwood shows his true colours and scores an OG in the 90th minute. He wheels away to his celebrate with his dad in the crowd who points at the score board looks into the AVTV camera and mouths "lights out Villa" with that and all power to the stadium goes out in a flash. In the confusion Westwood disappears and is never heard from again.

What a goal! Lovely build up. Well taken by Tekkers.

KEA has been very good today. He's looked a lot sharper on the ball today. Quicker, more zip about his passes. Lovely assist there too. This is what we want to see from a Morocco international.

Post by: fredm on July 26, 2013, 08:23:21 PM
Really beginning to think that the reason we concede so many as per this evening is because our reactions aren't quick enough.  There was time when he brought the ball down and it ran away from him slightly for anyone with sharp reactions to get a foot in but he had all the time in the world to get his foot behind it and slam it home.
Then we go up the other end and the ball falls in their area and Clark (and others) are not quick enough reacting and the ball is cleared resulting in Clark making a red card challenge in a normal match

Where's Bacuna playing today? at Full back, centre mid, or out wide?

Yep, all of those. From right back when he scored, following the subs of all 10 other players at 60 mins.

Fucking AVTV won't work even though I pay 40 notes a year for the yoke.
Can anyone post the line-ups we've fielded tonight? Thanks.

Villa line-up v Crewe: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Agbonlahor, Luna, Westwood, Benteke, Weimann.

Villa line-up v Crewe (After 60 mins): Steer, Donacien, Baker, Bacuna, Helenius, Delph, Sylla, Robinson, Herd, Gardner, Carruthers.

Ta. Is working now, just very slowly. Think it's my laptop. I always get those "Shockwave has crashed" messages even though I tick the right boxes in Chrome tools.

Enough of the fitness sessions. The team is taking shape. I think its agood idea to haveDelph in the 'second' team. We want him playing like he did in the last couple of months. We have a season of that and he'll be in Brazil. But you don't wanthim to start slowly as he has very few brownie points with the fansthat would mean we would be patient with him. So, start him in the half-hour team andmake him produce thatform of last year to get into the starting 11.

well I definitely think that these matches have shown that Gardner, Carruthers, Burke, Robinson and, after tonight, Donacien need to go out on loan for the season to see how they perform.  Don't think they are up to first team standard at the minute and keeping them at VP playing reserve and under 21 games won't help their development.

I'd agree on all them except Gardner. I don't think he's stood out by any means but we need 3 CM's to cover our first choice 3, so he'd be one of those to cover. With injuries, resting etc, we'll need him. Maybe put him out for the first month or two, but not more than that.

Carruthers may be close to the first team squad. He does need a bit of an attitude adjustment. He reminds me of Craig Bellamy.

Very reminiscent of a young Ugo Ehiogu. Tall, leggy but has some pace once up to stride, good in the air and strong in the tackle.

He impressed me at right back the other day too. A season too early perhaps but he's impressive, and if comparing to Ugo, he's roughly the age Ugochuku must have been when he made his debut.

I think this is where it's a shame about his injuries, because he should have had a season out on loan 1-2 years ago. I think it might be what'll mean he never achieves what people hoped he would when he was just making waves in the youths 3-4 years ago.
This is probably his sink or swim season. Putting him on loan would be too little too late IMO. Unless we sign 1 more midfielder we do need him to make up the numbers.

Good point sir. In all the excitement of getting into a new season I'd forgotten about the pointless early season International bollards. A couple of months at a good championship club would do him good.

It would be interesting to see Donacien against better opposition. On the evidence of the last two friendlies he has outshone his more experienced colleagues.

Steer looks good enough to be second goalkeeper. He doesn't seem to be that tall by goalkeeping standards but that doesn't seem to stop him coming off his line and mixing it.

Luna looks a better bet at LB than Bennett. I like the way he was given offside on the right hand side of Crewe's penalty are at one point. Our defenders do need to be good - and pacey - the way we play. It's very easy for opposing teams to work a player free on our flanks. I hope Luna startr the season in the team and Okore hits the ground running.

Steve Rose, good to hear the comments re Donacien, he does look a good prospect. Liked the way Luna was bombing down the flank on Tuesday, though we have to make sure that we keep it a bit tight at the back as well. The other night we only had one holding midfielder, firstly Gardner and then Westwood, fear we will be picked off against good teams playing like this if full backs are too far forward

I thought we were rubbish at Luton tbh. As the fitness picks up and the better players come back we'll hopefully continue where we left off yesterday. Málaga will be our toughest pre season test so far. Fingers crossed we put in a good performance taking us into the 7 day thriller.

I assume that he means "why is getting caught offside evidence that he is a better full-back than Bennett?".

It's not as if Bennett didn't spend lots of his time attacking last season - it's just that his defending was a bit dodgy a lot of the time. I'm not sure we've seen enough of Luna to know how his defending is going to compare. I expect that it's easier to look comfortable against Crewe and Paderborn than it will be in the first two games of the season.
Title: Re: Crewe Alexandra v Aston Villa All-in-one Thread
Post by: Steve R on July 27, 2013, 08:03:10 AM
ah. It's a bit misleading the way it was written. I thought he looked a better full back  than Bennett adn liked the way he still managed to get offside in such an unlikely position.

Defensively he seems to have better positional sense than Bennett. We do get exposed on the flanks at times, he seems better equipped to cope with that.
Title: Re: Crewe Alexandra v Aston Villa All-in-one Thread

Not to mention a lot of Bennett's problems last season came from him being physically smaller and weaker than a lot of his opponents.

Tony Moon isn't a big dude by any means but I think he'll cope with the physicality of the game better.

Agreed. Bacuna looks as though he is taking things steady and settling in. As his goal showed, he's got a bit extra and that will come through more with confidence and game time. Thought Donacien looked really good, as he did on Tuesday and Luna looks like he could be a bit of a stonewall defender.
Bit worried about Gardner and Carruthers - thought both were poor and gave possession away far too easily without creating much. Nice to see Gabby back and Helenius.
Interesting cameo by Baker on the left wing for most of his 30 minutes!
And that Benteke bloke!!!
Great to be among the Villa faithful at Gresty Rd enjoying an away win!

Now they might not even keep Bale.

It looks as though he wants out.

Unfortunately they will be a lot richer and can buy half a team.

Easier said than done though.

I missed the Sunderland match last season. Bastards.

You probably didn't miss anything. Did you ever find out how the game ended?

He's looked very competent in all of the games SH. He looks to have a good motor on him too. I think he will be a very pleasant surprise.

I think every time Leeg got a text from me during the Sunderland game he cried a little.

I'm beginning to notice a pattern here. This is the second game I've missed now (no internet connection on a nightout) that we've won convincingly...

I've just bought you a one-way ticket to Ulan Bator.  ;)  Do you want it by mail or Fedex?

Oh and if it's any consolation I flew back to UK for a weekend in London and the Sunderland game. Due to work I had to fly back early on the Sunday. At least my colleagues in the bank were treated to the sight of me bouncing round the office as I followed the game on the BBC. To be fair to them they're a lot of them are Zimbabwean (mainly Chelsea) or Kenyan (mainly Man U) but they're always chuffed to see the Villa doing well.  Maybe because I've been to their grounds more than they have and they saw how despondent I was during the Bradford games.

Was Benteke his normal self? He didn't seem to celebrate his goals much.

I noticed that, also he did not seem to be congratulated much by team mates much either - still he could have gone completely over the top and kissed the badge which would have made me more angrier

I think you perhaps over analysing, looking for things that aren't there. It was a friendly at a league one side, I don't think anyone is likely to swallow diving into the crowd.

Andi's goal was celebrated, then CB's first was celebrated a bit less, after that I think that were realising that it was virtually a stroll in the park so couldn't be bothered celebrating. Am sure it will be different on 17/8.

After all CB goals , he just wiped away the flesh from his mouth with his shirt after he had just eaten the defender.
