Sad to hear that he's passed away aged 80. Played for Villa in the 60's. RIP
-
One of the first Villa players I was aware of though never saw him play. RIP
-
Brilliant at getting free kicks.
-
Played and scored in my first ever Villa game, 16th April 1966 v Burnley. RIP Phil Woosnam.
-
What's the H&V policy regarding player deaths ?
Should they all get a thread of their own ?
I first mentioned Woosnam's passing yesterday in the Celebrity Deathwatch Thread.
Earlier today, someone else posted notification in an existing thread and now we have this new one.
Can a Mod/Admin please advise of the standard procedure
Thanks
EDIT - I see that there's now yet another Phil Woosnam thread over in "HEITS".
-
NASL founder, ex-West Ham and Villa midfielder Phil Woosnam passed away today in the States aged 80.
Just before my time but older Villains will have fond memories of the Welsh international.
RIP.
-
RIP Phil
-
Villa-related to be posted in HD then archived in HEITS I suppose.
-
I remember being pleased whenwe signed him, as not only had I heard of him, but also had a Barretts Sweet Cigarette card of him at West Ham, and so I could pretend he was wearing a Villa shirt.
As shallow as I am, I did think his crew cut was rather uncool.
As a player, I have nothing but good memories of him, and I seem to remember that we replaced him with Peter Broadbent who seemed past it to me, and all part of the rot that had set in.
-
He was the first player we signed that I had previously heard of, can't think how that could be but there you go. I remember seeing him on his debut and being impressed, was one of our better payers during his time with us, which wasn't difficult.
RIP
-
RIP
-
can not remember seeing him play, but remember reading about him in the Programes as the Villa trail blazer in the states converting those dammed yankees to a civillised sport.
Was he at Portland Timbers or is the memory playing games ?
-
RIP Phil
-
One of our most underrated players,a really great player. He was badly missed when he left for US. I'm sure he 'starred' in an episode of 'Crossroads' along with other members of the team for some visit to the motel.I really shouldn't have admitted seeing that.
RIP.

Atlanta Chiefs.

Phil Woosnam. I have great memories of him. In my first year of senior school my school team went unbeaten the whole season and won the Erdington and Saltley League and Cup double (I wonder if any other members of that team post on here)
Phil Woosnam presented me with my medals. 1966 I reckon. He was Villa's captain then and an inside left. He went on to be the commissioner of the NASL and I went on to work at Dunlop loading wagon's.
-
Phil Woosnam - one of my first Villa heroes who I actually saw play on a regular basis in the 60s
RIP
-
He was the man Jimmy Hill would have liked to have been. A fine player and a true football visionary decades before his time. Thank you for everything Phil.

The problem with the Celebrity Deathwatch thread is that it (quite rightly) doesn't allow RIPs and "So very sad"s and it can be a bit irreverent.
People who feel the need to throw a RIP the way of a favourite ex-player should certainly be allowed to start a new thread.

For an ex player it is fine to start a thread about them in HD.
For other celeb deaths, if it is someone you like a lot, or you consider highly topical, again, most welcome to start a RIP thread in OT.

And RIP Phil, enjoy playing on the Villa Park in the sky.
-
He would have fitted in very well in our present set up, talented footballer.
-
Highly intelligent both on and off the field, with a forward thinking business head on him too as exemplified by his work in the States after his playing days were over. I saw him regularly playing in the sixties.
-
He played and scored in my first ever Villa game. A 2-0 home win over Sheffield Wednesday in 1965. Tony Hateley got the other. It would be interesting to know how many assists he gave for Hateley to score all his goals. I was in the old Trinity Road Stand with my Dad. My Dad paid and in time honoured fashion, I ducked under the turnstile and my Dad chucked the gateman a shilling or two. Those were the days.
-
Phil played in my first ever game, v. Spurs in April 1965. A one-nil win helped us to stay up that season. I think he wanted to leave because of the obvious lack of ambition in the boardroom at the time.

Nice piece in the Gaurdian today Clicky (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2013/jul/26/phil-woosnam-west-ham-aston-villa-america?).

...and I didn't know that Ian Woosnam was a cousin of Phil's. Nor indeed that Phil's middle name was Abraham.
