@mac_zielinski: Looks like first moments of Tonev in Aston Villa shirt http://t.co/A5kGhmbo2e
-
Nice to see Stan there as well!
-
Welcome to Villa! Stan probably deserves some credit for this deal too.
-
Don't think much of the new home shirt.
-
For those at work/on mobiles etc who can't access the link.

Welcome to the greatest football club on earth, Aleksandar.
-
Welcome to villa!
-
Welcome and best wishes AlTo.
-
What position does he play?
-
Looks like the drummer from New Order.
-
I want to see if tsvet is excited about this or not? Nice to sign players before the last week of the transfer window as per MON though.
-
Welcome to the Villa
-
Welcome to B6 son. Do us proud.
-
My Polish relations and indeed, Poznan supporting freinds, say he was one of Lech Poznan's better players. How that league equates to ours though, we will find out.
-
What position does he play?
Winger
-
Welcome to the greatest football club on earth Alek, good luck!
-
What position does he play?
Winger
Left or right?
-
I like the look of this guy. He can play left, right, or through the middle. He's got a good eye for a pass, good feet, and he's not afraid to take a pop at goal from distance, left or right foot. He could be useful with set pieces too. I think he could be a find.
One more of Popov or Belhanda and our attacking options would be pretty much there to be honest.
Then we just need 2-3 new faces in the backline. Another CM and a backup keeper.
-
What position does he play?
Winger
Left or right?
One of the above. Or possibly both.
-
What position does he play?
Winger
Left or right?
Anywhere. Judging by his YT vid. He plays left or right, looks good attacking through the middle too. Can shoot from distance with his left or right. Decent balance and he's hard for defenders to judge because he's good with both feet. He's not like some players who'll always look to cut back onto their stronger foot.
-
He can supposedly play any of the attacking MF positions.
-
What position does he play?
Winger
Left or right?
One of the above. Or possibly both.
Ta, could be the end of N'Zog. Hope not.
-
Enjoy. Granted it's youtube, but he looks good value.
-
Just got the text message confirmation! Welcome to Villa Mr Tonev!
-
Villa seem to have stolen a march on the press with this one. Official site was the first to conform the signing.
-
Looks like the guy has some pace. At this rate teams are going to be frightened to death of us hitting them on the counter.
-
I think we'll be cashing in on Zogbia. We'll get more for him than we've paid for Tonev, and he'll be on a half, maybe ever third of his wages too. Makes sense to me. Charles is far too inconsistent.

Maybe Martinez will come in for him.

Good work on the photo Mr Shin and welcome Mr Tonev.
-
This is what Stan has to say on the official site:
"I think Villa fans have one exciting player on their hands. I think the Club has been monitoring Aleksandar for a few months, they have watched some games and some DVDs.
"He doesn't have a dominant foot which is really interesting and the main thing about him. He is quick, he is an exciting player and I think Villa fans will see he is a good player. He is the kind of player who can really make an impact in this young, exciting team. We spoke last night and he is really looking forward to it. He knows that it will be a challenge but he is ready for it."
Roll on more exciting, young signings!
-
Aleksandar Tonev is looking forward to becoming an important part of Paul Lambert's young and hungry Aston Villa team as the 23-year-old attacking midfield player completed a medical and agreed terms today at Bodymoor Heath.
With a deal agreed between Villa and Polish club Lech Poznan, the final paperwork will be completed next week to rubberstamp Tonev's move.
His arrival in England has been made easy by the presence of former Villa and Bulgarian international captain Stiliyan Petrov who welcomed his compatriot to the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.
Tonev lined up alongside Petrov when he made his international debut against Wales in October 2011 in Sofia and he is determined to make his own mark in the Barclays Premier League.
"I am really happy to be part of Aston Villa and I am really proud to be able to pull the shirt on," Tonev said. "Aston Villa is a big club and the manager and club have a belief in young players and in the team ethic. Football is not about the individuals. It's a team sport and all successful teams play well together. That's what you can see at Villa, the team is playing together.
"I am part of the team now and I am hungry for success. I want to show everybody what I can really do. I have played in front of big crowds before but the atmosphere here in England is unique. The crowd is like a 12th player for the team and I am looking forward to playing in front of the fans.
"I can't wait to start and to meet my team-mates and the manager. When I heard about Aston Villa, I thought about playing in the Premier League for such a big club. I wasn't thinking about anything else.
"Stiliyan being here wasn't a massive influence on me coming here. Stiliyan and Dimitar Berbatov have done really well in this league and I hope I can do the same. They are both great Bulgarian players and hopefully I can do the same and make my mark on the Premier League.
"I have been watching Villa and I know there are some very good players here. I am really looking forward to being part of the team."
Petrov, now assistant development coach at Villa, added: "I played alongside Aleks, so I know a little bit about what kind of a player he is. The main thing is that the manager likes him as well and the way he plays.
Tonev began his career at CSKA Sofia. He made his debut as an 18-year-old, coming on as a substitute against Belasitsa Petrich in March 2008, playing twice that season as CSKA won the league. He went out on loan in 2008-09 to Sliven 2000 but returned to Sofia in 2010-11. He played 23 games in the league that season, as well as eight times his club's Europa League campaign and three times in the Bulgarian Cup-winning campaign.
Tonev's performances in 2010-11 were recognised by his fellow professionals when he won the Bulgarian Footballers' Young Player of the Year 2010-11 aged 21, after being voted into third place in 2008-09 aged 19.
His performances for CSKA earned him a move to Polish club Lech Poznan following the 2010-11 season. Tonev played 27 times for Lech in 2011-12, starting 17 games and scoring three goals. He started 22 games the following season, coming on in another four, and scored four goals as Lech finished second in the league. He played in all of the Europa League qualifying games for Lech in 2012-13 and scored once, in the home leg against Xäzär Länkäran of Azerbaijan.
Tonev has also played 11 times for the Bulgarian national team, after playing 15 times for the U21s. Lining up alongside former Villa and Bulgaria captain Stiliyan Petrov, he made his debut against Wales in October 2011 in Sofia. Tonev scored his first goals for his country against Malta in March 2013, going on to complete his first professional hat-trick.

Love this quote:

Great news and good luck Alek.
Just listen to Stan and he will see you right!

Certainly the kind of attitude Lambert is after.

Welcome Tonev
If we don't do the Poznan when he scores I'll be disappointed
-
Is Bulgaria the new Scandinavia?
-

Oh dear god, no...
-
Is Bulgaria the new Scandinavia?
Yes, until we sign Jores Okore, then Scandanavia will be the new Scandanavia.
-
Welcome to Villa.
-
New signing, la la la, its a new signing la la la!
-
Where's Dan?
-
Villa seem to have stolen a march on the press with this one. Official site was the first to conform the signing.
No they were not. ;)
-
Interesting words from Stan, especially the last part about the "challenge". It will give us some serious options to change games from the bench and with Lambert, if you take your chance, he'll keep you in the team.
Welcome, Aleksander.
-
Where's Dan?
Hello mate. Nice to see him in a Villa shirt, a few days late but he is ours. Welcome to Villa Mr Tonev.
-

Welcome aboard tonev. Quite impressed with my limited YouTube knowledge of the lad, very excited by what lambert is doing.
-
Welcome to the home of football Alek.
Can see the fella starting a lot of counter attacks next season...and finishing them!
-
It is great to know we have our very own meerkat at Villa.
-
tremendous news, welcome Alex

It is great to know we have our very own meerkat at Villa.
More importantly - we go again.
So, Dan (oh Oracle of Lanzarote), who's next on the inbound flight?
-
Don't rate the training top if that's it.
-
Aleksandar Tonev today passed a medical and agreed terms on a move to Villa, with the deal set to be rubberstamped early next week.
Tonev put pen to paper on the contract alongside chief executive Paul Faulkner before his in-house media duties.
Check out exclusive pictures of Tonev at Bodymoor.
The 23-year-old took part in an exclusive interview with the club's in-house television channel AVTV.
He was joined by compatriot and new development assistant manager Stan Petrov, who acted as translator for the flying winger.
Tonev was clearly thrilled to be joining such a traditional and historic club in Villa and spoke of his excitement at playing under Paul Lambert, who is building a young and enterprising side in claret and blue.
Then it was the turn of club photographer Neville Williams, who took pictures of Tonev for the official website and external press uses.
He snapped away as the sunshine shone down on the magnificent training ground facility.

I'd like to point out that I suggested him in the transfers thread on 23 May, before there had been any links with him! He just seemed like a good fit.
Celtic have been linked with Aleksandar Tonev of Lech Poznan in the past. He is 23 and can play as a winger, and could be an option to give us some formational flexibility. Based on his age and the level that he is currently playing at I would have thought he would fit our recruitment strategy - but the Polish league might not be on Lambert's radar.

So if we were to go back in time, it's a bit like saying Barcelona have been linked with Neymar of Santos in the past. He is 21 and can play as a winger, and could be an option to give us some formational flexibility. Based on his age and the level that he is currently playing at I would have thought he would fit our recruitment strategy - but the Brazillian league might not be on Lambert's radar.

You just watch out, in 2 weeks time he'll be wearing that cheap looking Villa top.

Yes because Neymar and Tonev have the same profile

Hopefully first of some young exciting signing

...but we haven't signed Neymar have we?

Well well well. This is already better than January.
(not a pop at our Sylla, I like him.)
Welcome, Aleksandar! And more to come, mmmmm.

Can I refer the honorable gentleman to Dan's he signed last Saturday at 07:30 post.
-
First time for everything, but I wonder if the OS have printed something in the story of Tonez's signing incorrectly.
It reads "Stiliyan being here wasn't a massive influence on me coming here..."
Surely he would have said he was a massive influence

I hope it is 3 years with us having the option of an extra year. Villa should use this type of insurance policy more.

I took it as he was so keen to come to the England, and to a big club, that it didn't matter so much that Stan was at the club.

That's how I read it too, I think he's saying he was attracted by villa and the premiership rather than petrov.

I was more meaning in the "official" sense than the ITK sense.

yeh, maybe but players are always very willing to pay tribute to players that influence them and inspire them. I'd have thought Stan would have been a huge influence on Tonev in the discussions given his almost legendary status in his country.

Bit harsh TV, I think FatSam has every right to be a bit pleased with himself on this one. Indeed I was having a gander through the main thread to find the post as I remember commenting on it at the time, but could not find who it was. Fair play on a good call FatSam.

alright, alright, sorry Fat Sam. If indeed you did suggest this on May 23rd, then fair play to you. I'm delighted you were right as I think this player will be very good for us.
-
Who? Anyway, best of luck.
-

No they were not. ;)
Dan well done for bringing us the news on Saturday that has been confirmed now.
-
I like the tonev of his interview!
-
I'm happy with this one, looks to have a bit of pace, a good shot and, my favourite bit, he's is genuinely 2 footed. It makes someone so much harder to close down if they can move it and pass/shoot/cross from either foot.
I think he'll be competition for gabby and weimann.
-
Is this the end of Albrighton at VP?
-
I'm looking forward to more top goals from us next season. We raised the bar considerably for spectular strikes last season and this kid isn't afraid to have a go from long range.

He may have been quoted correctly.
He was also linked to Celtic. Maybe he felt that he had to say that Stan did not influence his decision.
-

No need for an apology. He's probably a bit raw, but it will be exciting if he does prove to be a good player for us. I'm pleased that we are now one of the clubs being more creative in the transfer market, rather than just paying top dollar for developed Premier League players. I understand that CSKA Sofia are due a sell-on fee from the deal.
-
Is this the end of Albrighton at VP?
i'm hoping its the end for N'zog,
he doesn't fit into the new model at Villa anymore, plus the fact hasn't been very good
-
Welcome to villa
-
If Popov and/or Belhanda follow. Then there may not be much room for Alby. I think he deserves another crack, but a loan for a few months, or till Jan could do him good. Get him fit and playing again. If injuries crop up, he'll get his chance.
-
A new signing in June! Brilliant. I like the cut of Lambert's jib
-
Very encouraging as Lambert has identified an area that needs strengthening and has acted very swiftly. With Gabby and Weimann (hopefully) still at the club next season, it means that Tonev can be integrated gradually and there won't be massive pressure on him to perform from the off.

That will be true for most signings this summer, our first 11 is good, it's the options when we need to change things or to cover injuries that let us down. Everyone we sign will be adding depth, even if 1-2 go straight into the side.
-
my favourite bit, he's is genuinely 2 footed
Yeah I love that bit, I wish that had been drilled into me when i was a kid. The so called "world class players" that are so one footed still bugs me a little.
-
Well full marks to the club for getting him in early. The last thing you need with foreign players is signing them near the end of August so they don't get time to settle in and have to spend 3 months in a Travelodge in Aston. Black mark for Lambert for signing someone during his holidays. Doesn't he know the club's supposed to go into paralysis when the manager is away? Kendrick must be bummed. He looks a good prospect and certainly has the right pedigree in the league he's coming from. Word of caution though - he's very young and not all Lambert's transfers are going to come off (probably) or straight away.
Anyway welcome Aleks

fuck me, that made me laugh. One transfer in and eastie is getting way too carried away. He'll be hugging and kissing complete strangers next.
Bang on the money and greg nash have rarely belonged in the same sentence
ONLY KIDDING nasher ;)
-
Welcome Tonev, hope you have a long and successful Villa career.
-
Good point Greg, and if Kendrick was wrong about this one, fingers crossed he's wrong about Belhanda too.
I know I'm being greedy but he does look ever so good.
-
I like the tonev of his interview!
Works better I reckon.
-
Good stuff - type of player we should be going for and glad it looks like it sorted in a timely manner. It is so Un O'Neill thankfully
-
Upon closer inspection of the pics that really is just Matty Lowton in a new top putting on funny accent.
Nice try Villa, nice try.
-
Welcome Alex.
Weird to see us signing someone this early. Probably a product of three years of Martin No Deal and managerial instability where we haven't had a manager in charge at this time of the year.
-
Is this the end of Albrighton at VP?
If anything it will help \albrighton. All eyes will beoff him now and allow him to play without the pressure from us lot.
-
Wingers:
No winger "does it" week in - week out...
You'll be hot/cold/hot/HOT/cold/freezing/HOT/HOT/warm
Welcome, we'll love you/hate you/like you/"who" you/love you again.
But we're Aston Villa, and you're now part of us. You lucky, lucky man (but you might never know it)

Welcome to Aston Villa FC Alex....Ooops I mean Aleks! ;)
Looks like a great addition to the squad!
-
One in already, I like it. He looks promising and in keeping with our new model, seems hungry to succeed.
Suspect we're going to see us add more depth to the squad this summer, more options, more competition.
-
I know what you mean but the best one of all was all left foot.
Sorry, that was at mrfuse from the bottom of page 6.
-
No doubt it's been said, but great to see Stan looking well on the video.

He looks a good prospect and certainly has the right pedigree in the league he's coming from. Word of caution though - he's very young and not all Lambert's transfers are going to come off (probably) or straight away.
Anyway welcome Aleks
Bang on the money as usual, gnasher!
Somebody frame this for posterity
Sometimes even a h&v legend needs his ego massaging ;)

I like signing's like this. He's someone the vast majority of us don't know too much about and it makes it all the more interesting. It's also nice to have a manager with a bit of imagination in the transfer market.

Loving the Anglo Villa / Bulgaria vibe continuation.
They love the villa out there.

Just back from there and the souvenirs on sale are mainly Man U , Liverpool, arsenal, Chelsea - I saw a couple of blues mugs on sale but nothing villa.
If we could seal the okore deal this week it would be an excellent start to the summers business.
-
Went skiing there a few years ago, saw loads of locals in villa hats etc
Also most of the bars had villa flags and scarves up.
-
Villa's Bulgarian shirt sales to go through the roof.
Welcome, now head down and do the business Mr Tonev.

There's a Bulgarian supporters club because they were at the Lions Club Awards the other week.

Hopefully this time neat year the media will be asking why the so-called "big clubs" missed this one.
-
Presumably he's here to play in the Gabby/Weimann role. Play wide, is quick and is willing to track back and defend (can't see Lambert signing anyone who wouldn't track back).

Not sure he would score the number of goals that gabby and andi provide but i expect him to provide a lot of assists , another option and the more options in the squad the better.
-
4-5 screamers next season wouldn't go amiss. He has that in his locker.
-
Daft question because I'm never up to speed,
but has he actually signed yet ?
-
Papers are saying he has signed a 3 yr contract and will be unveiled next week. I am hoping this delay is because Faulkner is in talks with Okore/Belhanda (speculation) .......

My daughter showed me clips off the net of him bollockin `em in from all over the place "Dad weve just signed him, look", my reaction was "yeah, right", get it confirmed off the club site, Happy campers all round. :)

If our model is to buy young players, we need to start giving out 5 year contracts.

I'm not sure. If they're any good then they automatically seem to get offered a new contract anyway - see Westwood, benteke and lowton this year.
-
If our model is to buy young players, we need to start giving out 5 year contracts.
I'm a bit surprised that he only got a 3 year deal TBH. It basically means that if he has a great season and refuses to sign a new deal, we'll effectively be forced to sell him next summer.

The reason its not official yet is Mr Lambert still on holiday, back on Monday.
-

I think our poster tsvet is a member of the Bulgarian Lions

Welcome. Do nothing less than sweat blood and run through walls for the club and you will be loved.

When we played Litex Lovich a few years ago they were there in numbers - 20 +

She still going? Wow.

Lambert is hardly on holiday mate. He is working hard to build a squad to have a proper go at European football next season. Holiday, no.

Hi all! Unfortunately due to work and family commitments I am not as often on H&V as I used to be.
I am not currently a member, but yes there is a Bulgarian Lions club - http://bulgarianlions.eu
Typically Villa are not the most popular club in Bulgaria, but because of Stan it is currently a lot more popular than what it was 25 years ago when I started supporting them. Now after Tonev signs (and possibly Popov if it happens to be true) it will surely grow even more in popularity.
Regarding Tonev - yes I am excited, but with the normal reserves about how he adapts to the league and lifestyle there. Eastern europeans tend to find it more difficult to settle in Britain, but since Tonev left Bulgaria very young and since he looks a smart and hardworking guy I guess he will have no problem. At least Stan is positive about him.
-
Well said tsvet, what about Popov, is he any good?
-
She still going? Wow.
Apparently still bemoaning the fact that she only has a single bed.

Great site mate, but i cannot understand how to log in or subscribe, as i do not speak Bulgarian. Is there a translation option at all on the site ?

He is.
Current Bulgarian captain.

No idea about translation on the BG Lions site though, sorry.

Agreed, he's taken a few days off away from the club but still in the country and at the end of a phone.
-
He could be in Australia and he'd still be at the end of a phone.
-
For someone with such a great shot on him off either foot, it's noticeable that he doesn't score that many. He's got 1/2/3/4 goals in his last four seasons. Maybe that means he'll get 5 next, though I doubt he'll go straight into the team.
Perhaps there are a lot of shots that go miles wide?
Not sure how many assists he tends to get.
-
Being in charge of footballing matters at Aston Villa FC is better than any holiday on this earth!

Any idea why tsvet? Normally we find that Southern Europeans and South Americans struggle and Scandinavians and Dutch/German/French tend to fit in quite well. Surely its not the pace of the game and hectic schedule? What can we as supporters do to make them feel " more at home"?
-
have to spend 3 months in a Travelodge in Aston.
No not Travelodge ....we use the Aston Hotel!
-
Some Eastern Europeans may find it hard to adapt but there are a fair few who are living, working ( very hard mainly) and enjoying life here.
I come into contact with a lot of Polish people in my work and I actually think its a breath of fresh air having them here.
(Sorry off topic!)
-
Apparently still bemoaning the fact that she only has a single bed.
Noosha Fox that was, not Lene Lovich!
-
There is plenty of east europeans people to meet when I went out to salsa nights. So if he like dancing he got a social network apart from his team. But I won't recommend him to dance on the night before a game :)

There were loads of Eastern European folk around for Stan at the last home game. Lets hope some come back to watch Tonev.

I was going to say. I know plenty of Polish and Romanian people who have settled in just fine.

A few in the Duke, a curry at Karma's, feed the ducks in Mary Stevens Park. That sort of thing.

When Stan first moved to Glasgow he was so bored that he used to help his mate out on Saturday nights, selling burgers from a van in Maryhill.

Was that through boredom or to improve his english. Either way its a pretty cool thing for a professional footballer to do.

Both, if I remember his autobiography well. My recollection was that he took a time to settle in Glasgow.

Fair play - if only Savo had served me a burger after a night on the razz in Snobs (is it still there?) he could have beaten Billy Walker's scroing record.

I've not been in there for years. I always prefered Edwards No8 though.

Snobs is getting knocked down for some kind of redevelopment sadly. Or not sadly. I hate the place but I still end up there every time I go out on the piss in brum, it'll be like losing a limb.
It also remains only the second place I've seen a Villa player out in public - Gareth Barry in the urinals about 6 months after he went to city ???, (Mark Bosnich in the Safeway in Bromsgrove was the first).

Interesting read on young Mr Tonev http://www.myoldmansaid.com/aleksandar-tonev-bulgarian-insider-view/ (http://www.myoldmansaid.com/aleksandar-tonev-bulgarian-insider-view/)
I think we are going to be kicking a few arses next season.
-
I can't believe snobs is being knocked down. I had a good track record there, unlike Dome II.
-
Played football with a Bulgarian mate of mine last night and when I asked him about Tonev, he didn't know that we had signed him, but knew that he was at Posnan and said that he was a good player.
On a side note, he knew all about the 19th minute applause for Stan as well.

Snobs is going?!

That's because it is never boring in Maryhill. Rainy yes. Dull often. Uninteresting never. One Stan Petrov.
-
Surprised it hasn't been mentioned - on here or even the official site news, that the interview Tonev gave to the club and quoted earlier in the thread was translated by...Stilyan Petrov! Well-worth a watch on avtv, quite surreal seeing Stan taking on a "new" job.
Unless Stan comes to the dressing room for every match I'm not sure how Lambert is gonna communicate with Tonev or are mumbles the same in every language?
The question on Petrov being an influence on his decision to come here (Tonev apparently saying "Not really") was answered professionally and translated seriously by Stan himself which was quite funny.

Apparently (http://topsport.ibox.bg/news/id_537456309) Lech Poznan are trying to work out who to pay the 10% sell-on fee for Tonev to, as CSKA Sofia are in the process of going bankrupt. The article claims that Lech Poznan are trying to make a EUR360k payment, which would mean the fee Villa paid was EUR3.6M or pretty much exactly £3M.

I wasn't really following the match thread on here on Saturday, but I did dip in once or twice.
At one point of dipping, it was "here comes Tonev" and so on.
I went for a piss, came back, refreshed and it was the first comment about shooting from 50 yards and the ball coming down somewhere on Saddleworth Moor.
This place does make me chuckle sometimes.
-
At least he had two shots during the time he was on the field. How many did Gabby and Andi have?
If you don't buy a ticket you will never win a prize.
-

He never ever looks like winning a prize though
-
I thought he did ok when he came on actually. Yeah, he did his normal blaze over the bar but he looked livelier than Gabby did.
-
As soon as he came on he ran at his man, made a yard for himself and then blazed it into the sky.
At least he managed the first two, something that Gabby hasn't done for many moons. He was also very close with his curling effort later on. There's definitely a player in there, he just needs one of his ferocious shots / clearances to go in.
-
I wonder if he is shooting because he wants to score a wonder goal for us, or whether the movement ahead is so crap that he decides it is the lesser of two evils to shoot.
-
His second curling shot wasn't too far wide of the post. De Gea was certainly concerned.
-
I wonder if he is shooting because he wants to score a wonder goal for us, or whether the movement ahead is so crap that he decides it is the lesser of two evils to shoot.
It's a fair point. Benteke is lazy around the box and Weimann hopeless. In the pre-season match against Malaga he set up Benteke with a lovely little through ball and he got an assist from a brilliant whipped in corner. Everyone watching thought that he could be the number 10 that we needed. Then the season starts and the movement up top is almost non-existent, which is probably why he shoots every opportunity he gets.
That being said he has had a couple opportunities to set up players in acres of space around the box and both times he decided to thunder one into row Z.
-
One of these days one of those shots is going to scream into the back of the net, almost ripping it off the posts. Unfortunately he'll likely be playing for someone else by then.
I was hoping for lot more from Tonev, and maybe he can still come good. Not looking great though.
-

He appears to be buying tickets for a different game most the time!
-

He's obviously on a shit basic salary (relatively speaking to the real world), but with a goal bonus which would keep his family in retirement.

He might think that he can win a prize but he appears to be shooting with one of those wonky guns you find at a fun-fare stall.

To be fair to him, his second shot was very close and also had De Gea well beaten.
He just needs a fortuitous gust of wind to help guide one of his shots back toward goal at some point, and hope the keeper slips over too. His goal will come.
-
Serious question. Has he played many times for the reserves? If so, has he scored for them?
-
I don't recall him playing for the reserves at all -perhaps the odd game.
And no, he hasn't scored.
-
Thanks Dave.
-
Makes me laugh when people say one day he will hit a screamer right into the top corner from 35 yards,
I dare say he will one day,
but it will make no difference whatsoever as to him ever being good enough
-

Well, if what we want from our attacking players is them scoring goals then him starting to score goals is going to have a pretty big difference as to whether or not he turns out to be good enough.

His biggest problem so far is that he's been trying to do too much (score from 30 yards + for example). The confidence in his natural game that would come from getting a goal might be what he needs to settle down, he wouldn't be the first player that's happened to.
For what it's worth I thought he looked a lot better than he has before on Saturday.
-
with Benteke and Gabby out -Tonev will probably get a game on Saturday.
God help us.
-
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Using the logic that's he simply shit based on what we've seen so far would have seen us ditch players such as Petrov and Vlaar and they've both proved that it can take a year or so to adjust. In fact we've afforded the likes of Gardner much more time and what has he ever done?
-
when does his shot start rising? could we paint lines on the pitch where he will score from?
-
Tonev reminds me a bit of Milosevic, (Savo, Savo,Savo), and if Tonev can score a screamer at Wembley I'll overlook his current target practice
-
I think he's a player worth persisting with. It's not as if he's cost us the earth.
-
Gabby and Weimann look totally jaded right now. Both seem like they've run out of puff. Nowt is going right for them. Tonev made a difference against Utd (well, as much as you can when the games already gone). If anything he had a full tank and looked really fresh.
I'd give Tonev a run. Thus far I've not been impressed, but lets get him in for a few games and see if he can turn it round. I'd be tempted to play Tonev and Alby either side of Helenius. That probably won't happen. I know Helenius has struggled a lot to settle but he was one of the few bright sparks against Sheff Utd, so I'm surprised with a goal in his back pocket, he wasn't given a bit more game time after that.
-

exactly Bardsley does it twice a year , would we have back ?
-
I don't buy the 'once one goes in, the rest will follow' line. I could shoot as often as he does and get one right occasionally
-
With all these injuries at least he's not playing today!
-
Hey, he got a shot on target today!
-
Hey, he got a shot on target today!
for a spit second I thought that today was going to be the daye
-
All his recent appearances were good, I could understand everybody moaning at him at first, but I think the more he'll play for us, the more he'll improve. Good shot on target yesterday, I thought that was it for him. He might not be mature enough, but he's got the pace, might have a fair bit of skill, and definitely the will to do well and to prove he's worth the villa shirt every time he comes on. Of course he didn't achieve much, but I like him to be fair.
-
Not exactly a defensive tiger though is he.
-
There will be shirts printed for the next game "I was there when Tonev got a shot on target". To be fair he looks like a lad who may come good to me
-

24 years old, New country, new language, new culture, new style of play, new team mates, new manager, new coaches, new tactics and new fans who are too quick to judge.

Sorry the bloke is a genius, his goal scoring, assists and shots on target stats show what a great player he is.
We are lucky to have a player of his calibre. I am sure this manager can find a few more just like him.

Daily Heil.
Aston Villa midfielder Aleksandar Tonev will have a medical on Monday ahead of joining Celtic on a season-long loan.
The 24-year-old Bulgarian was a target for Celtic before joining Villa for £2.5million last summer.
He flew to Glasgow on Sunday night and talks will continue on Monday.
-
That's a good move for him.
-

Yep found his level.

Seems to be gathering pace, best of luck to him and hopefully we can get our money back for him.
-

Honestly, if I'd read he'd gone on loan to Reading or somewhere like that, I wouldn't have been surprised, but Celtic is a very impressive one for him.
I really think part of his problem is he has been trying too hard. Going there, getting games in front of a big crowd week in, week out, and with the bonus of playing shit teams who you steamroller routinely, all that could boost his confidence hugely.
Good work from his agent. Or from Villa, whoever set it up.
-
I bet Keane had something to do with it.
-
I wonder if the Stan Petrov connection that got him a move to us also helped get him a move to Celtic?
-
I agree with Paulie, I think it is potentially a very good move for him and us.
-

That's not a bad shout, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Not good news for the Greenhouses at the back of Celtic Park
-
Good work if you can get it. My guess is either Lambert or Keane will be keeping an eye on him while he's there to see he can produce anything.
-

Ha
-
We actually gazumped Celtic last summer to sign him if I remember.
-
I've just looked at a Celtic forum and they're split about the idea but I did smile at a thread on there bemoaning gloryhunters in Ireland supporting English teams. Irony is not completely dead.
-
Let's see if Tonev can have a similar resurgence in his career as another former Villa winger that went there; Alan Thompson.

-
He's been woeful.
Hopefully he can go there and improve.
-
Signed for Frosinone, wherever that is. Good riddance, easily the worst player I've seen in a Villa shirt, and a racist to boot.
-
That's good news, a really poor signing.
-
He's managed to get a move to a newly-promoted Serie A club, shocked at that. Looks like the club he's gone to are like Italy's version of Bournemouth, in the top flight with just a 10k capacity stadium. Thought Serie C would be more his level.

An added bonus to some of the Lambert signings moving on is the fact I have learnt the name of a couple of clubs I had never previously heard of.
-
Sounds like it's only a loan.
-
Another year of Lambert and we would have had more players out on loan than Chelsea.
-
Sounds like it's only a loan.
How many years has he got left? This would be his last wouldn't it?
In all honesty I don't see why we couldn't have torn up his contract.

2 years left. He's only been here 2 years, seems an age, that's how shit he is.
-
Well, when you see West Ham have just let Kevin Nolan go 'by mutual consent', you do have to wonder how much it would have cost the Villa to just say 'yeah, we don't want you anymore.'

I'm not certain, but I think that sort of thing usually means paying the player the value of rest of their contract plus maybe the loyalty bonus? So you might as well keep them on and try and loan them out if you can't sell them, as you'll end up paying them the same amount anyway.

Bloody hell. I thought we'd have given him a 2-3 year deal at first, but 4?
Stan got this one badly wrong I think.
-
Permanent deal, not loan, according to this article which quotes their official Twitter...
Sleep tight sweet, racist, prince. (http://app.football-italia.net/?referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.football-italia.net%2F71662%2Fofficial-tonev-joins-frosinone#article/footballitalia-71662)

Great news all round:-)

Frosinone are in Serie A, along with Carpi.

Which shows the danger of appointing ex-players. Nice guys and "proper Villa men" don't always make good coaches/scouts/managers.
-
Permanent deal according to the OS
-
He really was staggeringly shit, best of luck in Italy.
-
Excellent news that it's a permanent deal.
-
He always did his best, so I don't resent him. Pity he was staggeringly shit though.
-
He might get some shots on target at Villa Park now he's playing in Italy.
-
good riddance.
-
he didn't cost us the earth though did he
so he's not in the same league of bad signings as N'zogbia and a few others of recent times
-
Farewell, young Tonev, you truly were one of the shittest, most racist players we've had in a long, long while.
-
Good luck and good riddance.
-
The Tonev chapter proves, in case we needed it being proved again, that YouTube footage should always be viewed underneath a huge asterisk warning viewers to be cautious of what they see. We all saw the videos of him rifling shots into the net from 25 yards, but what the story doesn't include is that it took until the 5,328th shot before one went in. Also, that birds, planes, hot air balloons and Superman were all killed in the process.

What's the racist link?? Must have missed it...

Its easy to over react on the internet but he really was the worst player I have ever seen play for us, absolute white.

That's certainly how he liked to see himself.

Wow....I definitely missed that! Cheers TV...good riddance indeed!
-
Awful player, quite happy we got shot of him permanently somehow.
-
Without doubt he'd get in my all time (that I've seen) worst Villa team. I never saw him have a good game, not one. Utterly hopeless.

Took some good corners against Malaga.

He was good overall in that game.

Either that game got him his move or the club shopped his head onto Grealish's body from the other night. Because there isn't any other footage of him playing well.
-
some of the crap handed out for pointing out what a crock of shit he was is pretty embaressing.
yes one of the worst players i have ever seen wearing the shirt.
-
Thanks TV for starting the day for me with a laugh. The thought of an agent putting Tonev's head on Grealish's body has just enough possibility to it to make it very funny. They would leave Jack's shooting at goal in just to add authenticity.
