Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar [c], Baker, Bennett, Westwood, Delph, Sylla, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Benteke

Subs: Given, Holman, Lichaj, Bent, Bowery, N’Zogbia, Bannan

I've got a horrible vision of us being a goal down going into the last 20 minutes and resorting to Bradford tactics - Bent and N'Zogbia on for Bennett and Sylla and the ball just being launched at five people in the box.

As long as we don't lose then I'm going to remain confident of staying up.

Aston Villa make one change, with Fabian Delph coming in for Charles N'Zogbia, while Phil Bardsley and Craig Gardner return to the Sunderland starting line-up.

They're just analysing the other games and Gary Neville has picked up a reason that led to Spurs equaliser at the weekend, that no other pundit did. He's very good at his job.

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Sunderland Match Thread
Post by: PaulWinch again on April 29, 2013, 07:30:26 PM
What was the reason?

Earlier in the game Huddlestone had a free kick in a very similar position and had a shot and hit the post. That meant for the free kick that resulted in the goal, Wigan had put an additional man in the wall to prevent the shot and that meant there was space for the ball to come in.

Sensible side. We can't keep getting overrun in a two man center mid. Our weird 4-2-4 that we play too often doesn't work, either defensively or offensively.

I'm hoping for a good game from Sylla. I want to see him step up. So far he looks like a poor mans Osbourne if I'm being perfectly honest. Hopefully he can have an impact on the game though. He'll allow Delph and Westy a bit more freedom.

Much as Zog has improved since the turn of the year, he's still mostly a passenger when he plays. Weimanns been off the boil so if we do need some attacking flair in the 2nd half we could bring Charles on, if Andy's having a quiet game.

At some point, if we're can't get the breakthrough, I'd like to see Bent on. I'd fancy him to grab a goal against Sunderland. I do think Benteke could play the sort of wide role Andi does. Breaking into the middle. So we could conceivably fit Bent in without switching system or sacrificing Tekkers. Tekkey works the channels very well too.

What do they do all week in training?  The midfield is OK, and our attack very good, but the defence?  Sweet baby jesus and the orphans, they are all terrible to a man.

We desperately need someone wiling to swing in a cross. We are so narrow and our best weapon is a beast of a centre forward. Go figure.

Sunderland look much more composed. We're a bit too frantic, and look all over the shop at the back. Baker looking very wobbly. Need to regain some composure.

Sylla repeatedly giving it away isn't helping.

We are a threat though, and will get chances if we can keep Sunderland chances to a minimum while they're on top.

Come on Villa!!!!

Keeping the ball and passing it around to find an opening is a better option than hurling it forward aimlessly. Let's just hope we find those openings and take the chances.

No one ran with Rose. Vlaar was with the striker, Rose ran passed the midfield.

And that's handball every time, fuck off.

I do agree that Weimann is an exciting prospect but composure isn't really one of his strong points. Not yet anyway. The potential is there and at times he shows it but he misses some sitters too and needs to iron those out of his game before I'd consider him to be a composed player.

Sit back, soak it up and catch them on the counter.

Westwood has developed a nasty habit of not watching runners, who go on to score. He did it against Everton, Lplop and tonight, wakey wakey.

So far not too bad. Okay going forward. We look like we could get 1-2 more and we'll need to.

Defensively awful. Baker is lost at sea again. He's just not good enough at this level to be honest.

Vlaar is a number 2. What we need is the lynchpin, the organiser, who can keep the defence in order. A Laursen, a Mellberg, a God. Vlaar is not that. Same with Cueller. He's good if he's got someone beside him keeping the line together, and keeping everyone sharp.

Law of Aston Villa dictates that we've had our good half (mostly first halfs innit) and we'll be bobbins in the 2nd. Lets break the law today lads!

Win today. Beat Norwich, job done.

Good half - playing with plenty of promise and both full backs getting forward- good movement up front and 2 good goals- still look a bit jittery at the back though- i think we will need to score at least one more.

Decent half for me, still need to be a bit more precise in the final 3rd but we've done well up to there and the 2nd goal in particular was excellent, great ball from lowton, excellent first touch and finish from Weimann.

Sylla looks like he's struggling with the weather to me, just seems to be misjudging the spped of the ball.  Has put in a couple of belting tackles though.

Tekkers or Weimann in that position and it probably would have been.
That said I fancy Gabbaldinho to pop up with a goal tonight.

Sit back, soak it up and catch them on the counter.
No, no, no.

Just no.

Do you not watch this team? When we sit back, we do anything but 'soak it up'. We implode and concede lots of goals.

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Sunderland Match Thread

great response after their equaliser, we played our best football of the game. but again we seemed to shit it after weimann scored and were thankful for half time. two cracking goals from us and we havent even been that great going forward thus far. to be fair Lowton has made hay from a poor Sunderland tactical set up, with Larsson playing so infield he has had loads of space to come forward into and we have exploited that. I expect to see McClean on at half time, saw him warming up just before the half time whistle.

We will definitely need the third goal. Johnson is giving Bennett a lot of problems. Graham causing problems too for our centre halves. Think we will need to improve further in order to go on and win the game. Gabby has gone out of it a bit since the missed chance. Need a lot more from Benteke whose touch has been poor. Weimann was very quiet until the goal but hopefully will get him going. As others have said Sylla is a headless chicken out there. Id bring on Nzogbia instead and drop Delph and Westwood into a 2 man deep midfield.

Going to be a very nervy second half.

Well, we know that they cannot keep it at 2-1 without getting deeper and deeper, then conceding. Have to go for the third and make timely substitutions.

Sylla the weak link big time.

His energy and tackling has been good, but he's a bit clueless with the ball. Wish KEA was playing instead.
Couldn't be more wrong, this kid looks a real prospect give him a chance.

I agree he's looked lost a few times tonight but it is unusually high tempo and I think he'll be a good player.

I did predict before the game that Benteke could finish the top flight career of either Cuellar or O'Shea tonight......

The sheer awfulness of some of those Sunderland players has been truly exposed tonight. How is Phil bardsley still earning a crust at this level?

Delph has had a great second half. Sylla too vastly improved. Our two full backs have had their best games for the club tonight.

Wouldnt mind a 6th

I've decamped to the kitchen to listen to R5.

Alan Green and Lily in massive change of attitude towards the Villa in 90 minutes shocker. Us or Wigan to go down at the start of the night, now they are creaming themselves about us...

Is this a sign of things to come for next season?

It'll take a season or two but it's coming I tell ya.

It's coming mate, and if we can shift out the surplus and invest again in the right areas what a prospect this team will be

I honestly can't wipe this smile off my face. In sheer disbelief. Jizz everywhere.

At Villa Park it probably looks like they turned on the pitch sprinklers early. ;D

To be fair (spit) we'll have changed a lot of minds with this performance.

The only way this could possibly be better would be if there was one MON in the away dugout...

Lowton has been impeccable. Best RB display tonight that I can remember from a villa player.

I'm sure Lambert has more class than me, but if I was there right now, I'd be putting on a big old pair of Kenny Everett hands and returning Di Canio's 'going down' act right in his face.

we've missed so many chances this year and given away so many sloppy goals. Yet under the surface as bad as it got at times, it was bubbling. Somebody was going to take a royal tonking at some point and Sunderland happened to get in the way.
