Seeing as I started the Sporting one, I'm starting this before anyone else does in the hope that it's lucky.
It can be a Pre-Match, Match and Post-Match thread rolled into one to avoid causing too much clutter.
Plus, it can take our minds off the first-team's performance today.
Kick off is 5.00pm UK time tomorrow, coverage commences 4.30pm on Eurosport.
-
I was told that the kick off time is 5:00pm.
-
Right you are. Kick-off 5pm, coverage starts 4.30pm. Have amended initial post.
-
I didn't once hear any advertisement for this at today's game. I would have thought it would be a good idea to let people know so they could shout at the tv and spur the lads on.
-
It's on the same excuse of a pitch as the semi, too.
You'd think as it's a reasonably high profile game the organisers would have sorted a better playing surface.
-

There's probably some rule against promoting or advertising other channels' programmes during a televised Sky Sports game.
-
Ah, hadn't thought of that. You're probably right. Shame mind. People we spoke to before the game didn't know it was on tv and all said they were going to watch it.
-
Would be great to be first English club to win this. Winning this would add alot more credibility to that 'best academy in the country' tag.
-
Ah, hadn't thought of that. You're probably right. Shame mind. People we spoke to before the game didn't know it was on tv and all said they were going to watch it.
Good work Pauline.
What time does your flight leave?

Haha, Jon said today that if he wasn't working we would jump on a plane and go. We then decided we had no idea where, in Italy, Lake Como is.
So, I'll be like everyone else and watch it on tv in the comfort of my own lounge. Jon won't be able to watch it as he's working.

Samir Carruthers admits Villa have surprised a few people by reaching the NextGen Series final.
But the skipper's belief has never wavered during this memorable European campaign.
Carruthers is set to lead Villa out at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia in Lake Como for Monday night's all-English final against Chelsea.
The 19-year-old midfielder has unhappy memories of facing the west London outfit in a major final.
As a first year scholar back in the 2009-10 campaign, he was on the losing side when Chelsea defeated Tony McAndrew's team to lift the FA Youth Cup.
Three years later, though, the two clubs will collide again with continental supremacy up for grabs.
Carruthers is hopeful of a happier outcome - even if Villa were unfancied when they arrived in Italy for the finals weekend.
"It is great that we are in the final and probably a lot of outsiders didn't believe we'd make it this far," he said.
"But we've got good team belief and if we didn't believe in ourselves we wouldn't be here.
"I believe we can do it and we are here now so we've just got to prove to the rest that we can win this.
"When I was a first year we played Chelsea in the Youth Cup final and we lost narrowly so there is a little bit of rivalry.
"But it should be a good game so hopefully we can do it."
Carruthers was proud of the discipline and tenacity Villa showed in Friday night's semi-final victory over Sporting Lisbon.
He knows those qualities will be needed again against Chelsea.
"We stuck to our game plan and the lads dug it out," he added.
"In the first half we didn't play the greatest but we showed our quality in the second-half.
"Especially in extra-time as well, we showed how fit we are to carry on to the end and we finished them off with the quality we've got in our team."
The NextGen Series final on Monday evening kicks off at 6pm local time/5pm UK time

Play the game, not the occasion,' is one of the oldest sayings in the coaching manual.
It is a mantra Janoi Donacien is embracing as he prepares for the biggest game of his career this evening.
The central defender says staying cool, calm and collected is key for Villa in the NextGen Series final against Chelsea in Lake Como.
Along with team-mates like Samir Carruthers and Graham Burke, Donacien has thrived on the responsibility of being one of the senior men in this Villa side.
The 19-year-old is in his third season at the club and has trained with Paul Lambert's first team squad on a number of occasions this term.
Coach Tony McAndrew will be looking for the St Lucian-born stopper to be a 'wise old head' in the claret and blues' back four.
"It will be a big occasion but we have come here to play the game and we have come to win," said Donacien.
"We've just got to stay calm and think about doing the right stuff and stay together as a team.
"We've faced them a few times but it is a different occasion.
"It is the biggest game I've played in so far but we've got to come away with the win at the end of the day."
Donacien says it is inevitable Villa will be made to dig deep, just as they had to in Friday's thrilling semi-final against Sporting Lisbon.
"We went away to Sporting and beat them then we had to face them on Friday night and did really well," he said.
"We had to dig deep and we got through it and now we are in the final so hopefully everything goes well.
"It feels really good to be here and hopefully we can come away with the result tonight."
Donacien reckons his first taste of European football through the NextGen Series has played a significant part in his development.
Having helped Villa reach the quarter-finals last season, he has his sights set on a winner's medal this time around.
"It has been really good because we get to go away and we get to play in other stadiums," Donacien added.
"It helps you grow as a player. It would be great to cap it off with a win and go back home and celebrate with the rest of the boys."
Follow our live audio and text commentary from the NextGen final, which kicks off at 5pm UK time, 6pm local time.

The view from Chelski...
Chelsea set up on Friday in a 4-2-3-1 system, and will likely do the same against Aston Villa. There will likely be a pair of changes from Friday though, one due to injury and one because of a late arrival.
Adam Nditi was injured during the game, likely as a result of the awful pitch the clubs were forced to play on. His ankle doesn't look like it will be recovered enough for him to play in the final, leaving Chelsea with two pretty realistic options in replacing him. Lewis Baker has played on the wings fairly often, and a move to the left would likely see John Swift inserted in the midfield. Chelsea could also put Connor Hunte out on the left, leaving Baker in place as they did after the injury on Friday. Either one would be a fine option, and there's a good chance we see both of them at some point tomorrow anyway.
The second change should be far more impactful, as one of Chelsea's best young players has joined up with the squad for the final. Nathan Ake was not involved for the semis due to training with the first team, but he has traveled to Italy and will reportedly be available for selection tomorrow. He'll likely step in for Danny Pappoe, partenring in the center of the defense with Alex Davey.
Ake for Pappoe should help balance the defense for Chelsea, as both Davey and Pappoe are big, strong, slower players. Both have very similar skillsets, and you could see on Friday that they were capable of being beaten by quick runs and slow to cover for the fullbacks.
Ake entering the mix gives Chelsea a player that tends to cover these runs very well. He's not nearly as good as either of the pair in the air, but he's far more skillful than either and reads the game at a much higher level. His presence should help stabilize the back line, and hopefully make the defense a little less open to runs in behind.
Chelsea will be facing a Villa team that generally lines up in a flat 4-4-2, some might call it a 4-4-1-1 with one striker tending to play a bit deeper than the other. They'll be without the services of one of their regular strikers though, as the tournament's second leading scorer, Michael Drennan, won't be available for selection.
The Villians do have a pair of players to watch, in Callum Robinson and Jack Grealish. Robinson will likely be the focal point of the attack, and he'll be a danger making runs in behind the center backs with good acceleration and pace. Those types of runs gave us trouble on Friday, so hopefully they'll be ready for the challenge tomorrow.
Grealish tends to play as one of the wide midfielders in the 4-4-2 look, and also boasts pretty good pace. Most likely he'll be on the left for most of the match, which would make for a very interesting matchup with 16-year old Andreas Christensen.
Just from the few Villa games I've seen in the tournament, this would seem to be a favorable matchup for Chelsea. The Birmingham side don't play the sort of high-pressure/high-line that tend to cause Chelsea loads of problems, instead picking up the pressure much closer to their own goal. Hopefully this will lead to Chelsea's midfield establishing themselves fairly early, trying to push the ball deep to the wings and find Jeremie Boga between the midfield and the defense.
The pitch will probably be a factor again, as it was absolutely dreadful for the semis. The final will be the fourth match played on it in three days*, so i'd have to assume the condition will be worse than it was for our opener. That may play into Villa's hands a bit, as they'll likely be looking to play over the top a bit more than Chelsea

The biggest match for an English club to win a trophy so far this season kicks off at 5 meanwhile I will make do with this warm up game at the bridge going on now!
-
At least, hopefully they wont try and knock the fuck out of us the way Lisbon did, Brutal and un-intelligent.

Teams coming out now

Well, they're late. Tsk

Well, they're late. Tsk
Kids....
-
it is in italy...
-
Watkins great save
-
AVFC flag there.
-
Great run Carruthers
-
Did I hear right that Chelsea have flown a kid with first team experience over just for the final?
Used to be called a ringer in my day.
-
Sky go on my iPad is a minute behind the tv. Just thought I'd mention it.
-
Commentators showing the same degree of neutrality as the semi, I note.
Chelsea seemingly just have to turn up ...

Nathan Ake

Yes Nathan Ake , Dutch born, made his first team debut in December and played v Boro in the Cup match from the start in 5th? round.
-
I was gobsmacked with the quality in the first five or so minutes. It's dropped off a fair bit since then.
The pitch clearly isn't helping.
Not sure anyone looks first team ready so far. Carruthers looks skilful but has made the wrong choice quite often. Front two look dangerous. Not really sure what type of player grealish is. Neat on the ball but doesn't look to go past his man much for a winger.
-
They look to have a bit more quality and incision on the break. But we've looked dangerous at times. Donacien looks good and strong
-
Last few minutes reminds me of our first-team defending.
-
To be fair Chelsea do appear to be the better team. Fast and more precise.
-
2 poor delvieries from Carruthers.
-
Yes they have that speed you associate with better players. We don't look as good technically. But then I don't imagine too many of their players are from west London. We need carruthers to start getting a grip on the game
-
Is it me or Chelsea kids are just a touch bigger than ours?
-
Our 'keeper has kept us in the game so far and the midfield and defence are both giving the ball away a little too easily - just like the first team!!
Robinson, Carruthers and Grealish all look dangerous for us.
Grealish has a lazy skillful style that reminds me a bit of Sid.
-
Robinson has been taught at the gabby school of finishing it seems ;)
-
Some of the names will get the plaudits, but so far Villas no 4 looks a good defensive midfielder.
We lack a bit of pace at the back.
-
Their no 8 is their best player imho.
-
Robinson has been taught at the gabby school of finishing it seems ;)
Slightly unfair, eastie. The ball was not easy.
-
I think the villa no 4 is a real barrier today. But doesn't look a first team prospect at this point to me
Grealish and Robinson are coming into it
Barton doesn't look to have the same threat on the right.
-
Am am in a bar in Budapest watching, just happened across a telly in a window.
School boy error though, ordered a litre of lager...
-
This commentary is really annoying, the only real difference between the sides is that they're quicker up front, but the commentators are going on as if we've barely touched the ball, I reckon the possession is probably about even but they keep saying chelsea have dominated possession.
-
Calder clears off the line. Phew.
-
Dodgy defending - it's lucky Watkins is playing we well as he is.
-

Just like Friday, they're biased towards our opposition.
-
Riding our luck a bit. Hope we pick up a notch in the second half.
-
To be fair, Chelsea do look better to me. Some of players like grealish and Robinson look dangerous, others don't look to have the quality to me. I suspect more of the Chelsea players will be playing top flight football in a few years. Chelsea have had quite a few chances whereas I only recall one for us?
-

I wouldn't mind if it wasn't just a case of Chelsea pumping it to the right wing from everywhere on the pitch as soon as they can. If a les fashionable team did it they'd be 'playing long ball', but the media favourites are just 'playing direct'.
-

The commentary on Friday was a joke throughout. I know I am biased to wanting Villa to win but they really do seem to want whoever we are playing to win. It comes across as plucky little Aston Villa they're doing so well just to be here, it's pathetic. They're just obsessed with clubs like Chelsea that is all they care about.

Here we go again, Stuart Robson and whoever the hell he is, 'Aston Villa have made a habit of beating superior opposition'.
Tossers.
-
Whenever Chelsea get on top, "Villa are beginning to feel the pressure" or "Chelsea are dominating". Whenever Villa get on top "the game seems to have lost its way". Biased tossers.
They've probably edged it, but there hasn't been much in it. A blind person relying on the commentary team would assume Villa had been as out of place as Nick Griffin at a Jay-Z concert.
-
I really want us to beat the classless bastards
-
Also there is no consideration by these two 'experts' that these are kids learning the game. It's all 'that was a poor effort' and 'he looks like he could be quicker' etc, etc, and that's for both teams.
Poor and lazy commentary, as well as biased towards the 'bigger' teams.
Come on 'plucky Aston Villa' for the second half
-
They have very quick forwards and I think we could get caught out by that.
-
Penalty come on
-
Get in
-
1-0 villa
-
Go on me babbies!!
-
YEEEEEESSSS!!!
-
Get in, brilliant penalty...
-
Yes
-
Why didn't Barry take the pen?
-
woo hoo
-
Yesssssssssssssssss!!!!
-
Great play Villa.
-
get in :)
-
I see sporting beat Arsenal 3-1
-
Diving tosser
-
No matter the level, Chavski players are diving cheating little shits.
-
Booked for a dive, how typical of that bunch...
-
That was a shocker of a dive.
-
Need to get Grealish on the ball a little more.
-
Do you have to shave your head to be a part of the Villa Academy coaching staff?
-
I get the feeling they might have some very good individual players but we are more of a team
-
When Chelsea players have a poor shot, Robson says the pitch is to blame; when the Villa have an attempt, it's poor play or a poor decision.
-
We're playing really well now. Carruthers and Robinson are really playing well, as is donacien. I'd hope Robson will agree we've been the better side in this half
-
Oh that's lovely. Popped out to do an errand and come back to a 1-0 lead...
-
I understand John Terry has been flown out to the final to lift the trophy should Chelsea win it.
-
Oh that's lovely. Popped out to do an errand and come back to a 1-0 lead...
Typical part timer ;)

The Portuguese commentary here on Friday was very complimentary towards us, despite us playing a 'home' side. I'd imagine it's a reflection of how much importance they give to youth football and it's development. Over here they will show live the national u18, u19 and u21 games and people are interested in seeing them. They very much appreciated and respected the characteristics of the Villa team and there was no sour grapes when Sporting lost.
-
If drennan was playing, would he be upfront instead of Robinson? Or does Robinson play on the wing? Is this the team Jordan graham normally plays in?
-
Oh that's lovely. Popped out to do an errand and come back to a 1-0 lead...
Yes, I have just got back from a run and had the same nice surprise. I was following the pre-match thread before I went but then, peculiarly, completely forgot about the game during my run
-
Terrific save? It was but what about the shot. Idiot commentator.
-
I understand John Terry has been flown out to the final to lift the trophy should Chelsea win it.
A Chelsea legend...which tells you everything you need to know about that sordid little outfit
-
Robson has gone from saying the Villa players are 'technically inferior' to Robinson and Grealish are both 'excellent players' !!! Come on me Villa babbies !!!
-
Chelsea sub: CHunte - any relative of J Terry, I wonder?!
-
Robson has gone from saying the Villa players are 'technically inferior' to Robinson and Grealish are both 'excellent players' !!! Come on me Villa babbies !!!
We're talking here about a bit part, utility ex West Ham and Arsenal player so I don't think we ought to get too steamed up
-
Never a foul.
-
Oh that's lovely. Popped out to do an errand and come back to a 1-0 lead...
Typical part timer ;)
To my credit I did ,for a second, think about leaving the wife stranded and not going but..... That would resulted in a meltdown later!

Grealish has come of age in this tournament. Watkins could also develop into a fine keeper.

Apparently both Lambert and Faulkner have flown out to watch the final and support the boys. Shame th cameras haven't picked them out ;)
Come on lads 10 minutes to go....
-
What was Burke doing then? Apart from being a berk.
-
Horrible challenge by Burke. Should have been a red.
-
Could have been a pen if their player went down then.
-
Horrible challenge by Burke. Should have been a red.
Living up to his name there :(
-
Bloody hell that was an outrageous challenge by Burke!
Been really impressed with carruthers second half
-
They do look like a very tight unit - well-organised and supportive and they keep their shape well. I've been impressed so far, even if Burke does appear to have lost it a little.
-
Some of these lads already look a cut above kea and bannan .
-
Gaining possession upfield by throw ins!
-
Watkins is positively Guzanest.
-
THUMB

Truth hurts...but yes
-
Chelski go to 10.

Full backs have played well as well - Kinsella has handled Kiwoma well. And Donacien and Lewis look good.
-
Can't afford extra time here - mrs east waiting for remote for emmerdale.
Tell her to record it. -:)

Terry's private jet has just turned back!

Very nice, good performance and an excuse to get drunk tonight :)
-
Champions of Europe!!!AGAIN!!!
-
I still don't understand why the final games of such a prestigious competition were playing on a ploughed field inside Stalag Luft III
-
It's a European Trophy.
When they show off the trophy at the Fulham game, the very least the club should do for the kids is get Withe and/or Mortimer to present it.
-
Well done the Villa lads....Champions of Europe !!!! Eurosport: Crap...We don't even see them get the trophy !!! We must have a lap of honour at the Fulham game !!
-
We know what we are, we know what we are. Champions of Europe, that's what we are.
-
I enjoyed watching that, good stuff! Congratulations to the lads, too, deserved the win, I'd say.
Some promising players too. The standouts for me were Donacien, Carruthers (who looks like he should be close to first team action soon, to me) and Robinson.
Well done, the young 'uns!

Andreas Weimann @andiweimann 5m
Buzzing for the boys 👍! Great win #NextGen #avfc ... @CallumRobinson7 man of the match for me 👏 and 2 great pen
-
Fabulous stuff, this calls for a Stella Artois Cidre (pear or apple, I have yet to decide) to accompany my bath and book. I could never ever tire of beating that bunch of loathsome tossers.
-
As I said before, this underpins our reputation as best academy in the country. Dare I say this lot are the next golden generation? Let's hope they fair better than the last lauded crop of youth. Brilliant performance though. Character and bottle in abundence. Kept a clean sheet and saw out a lead too. The first team should take note.
-
April 1st used to be called April Fool's Day. From now on, the World will refer to it by another name.
Victory In Como Day.
Fantastic performance, hopefully we won't have to wait nearly 21 years before being crowned Champions of Europe again!
EPIC.
-
Callum Robinson looks a great prospect, great movement, excellent close control and always looking for the players coming on to the ball, if we can get his finishing sorted he looks like he can make it.
I really like Grealish as well, lovely feet and again, he's very "clever" for his age.
Donacien again was solid and seems to be the organiser in defense, I think he'll make it as well.
Carruthers will make it, I'm sure of it, looks a really good midfielder already.
Watkins did very well, we've got a good record of keepers called Brad.
-
Well done the kids, definitely a silver lining to a cloudy season. ;D
-
Oh and Carruthers should be involved in the run-in now. Could be the wild-card that can make something happen when we really need it. Why Lambert doesn't rate him, I'll never know.
-
Yes Champion of Europe. Most f the big houses took part and we cameo out on top.
The clubs
Ajax, Anderlecht, Arsenal, Athletic Club, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea
PFC CSKA, Juventus, Olympiacos, Paris St. Germain, Aston Villa, Barcelona
Celtic, Fenerbahce, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City, Marseille
Molde, PSV Eindhoven, Rosenborg, Sporting Clube de Portugal
Tottenham Hotspur , Wolfsburg
-
So is he Little, little Brad? (the goalkeeper)
-
For once, watching Villa was quite enjoyable. ;D
Well done boys a great result. Excellent stuff.
Grealish looked good and I thought Barton was excellent.

You can bet your life if chavski had won Eurosport would have continued coverage to present trophy.

Tony McAndrew seems more able to organise a team than another Villa manager I know!
-
Feel very proud, well done babbies.

Kinsella deserves a lot of credit. He had that Kiwomya sewn up in the second half and Chelsea hadn't got a clue what else to do. The midfielders tightened up well also.
Dunno about other teams having better players (c. Eurotwat), Robinson was the player of the weekend for me.
Well done the youngsters, and if EUFA have half a brain they'll think hard about who plays in their tourney next year.
-
Fantastic stuff indeed. Was on the Chelsea tour at the weekend (my friend begged and paid me to come along, honest) and at the start the guide asked us all who we supported. It was mostly foreigners who gave their home team (Rapid Vienna, Juventus etc.) and then "Chelsea in England". When I said I was a Villan he said "Really? Why? Oh, you're no fhreat(sic) to us anyway".
So, Jack, surname unknown, have some of that you philistine!
Oh, there was a bloke from Thailand who was wearing an Arsenal baseball cap but said he supported Yanited much to Jack's chagrin.
P.S. Anyone know why Mikey Drennan wasn't involved in this?

What's this Aegon Cup that's on Eurosport now ?
-
Will look forward to them parading the trophy at the Fulham game?
Can give them a deserved round of applause.
-
Well done the Villa lads....Champions of Europe !!!! Eurosport: Crap...We don't even see them get the trophy !!! We must have a lap of honour at the Fulham game !!
You can bet your life if chavski had won Eurosport would have continued coverage to present trophy.
Disgraceful coverage and the commentary couldn't have been worse if you'd stuck Paul Tait and Robbie Savage together. I'm sure if they approach Withey, Tony Morley and co they'll have something special sorted out for the Fulham game.
This is a massive scalp for our youth system and thoroughly deserved they seem like a really tight knit group, lets hope they can kick on from here and we get a few coming through next season if not a couple for the last few games of this one wouldn't hurt to give them a place on the bench once we get safe.
-
I thought we had the for best players on the pitch by the end of the game: Robinson, carruthers, grealish, donacien.
Suspect most of the others won't make it, but these four looked very good, especially in the second half. Carruthers was miles better than that Ake who's played for the Chelsea first team. Long long way to got for all of them in development terms
-
gutted i forgot to tune in but great result, especially against chelsea who were a disgrace at VP a couple of years back in youth cup
-
Anyone remember when we paraded the Peace Cup round VP when we played Fiorentina? Barry Bannan was carrying it and he looked like he couldn't given less of a shit.

Is it me or was there something very wrong with Arsenal having a complete team of foreign youngsters for their semi final?
-
Well done lads, 3-4 of that team plus current crop in first team potentially means investment in youth may pay off

From the BBC...
"Huge congratulations to Aston Villa's Under-19's after they were named champions of Europe this evening by beating Chelsea 2-0 in the NextGen Series final - Graham Burke scoring both goals.
Villa are the first English side to win the competition, which was set up in 2011 to provide players the chance to test themselves against the best youngsters from the big clubs across Europe.
Things might not be going particularly well for the senior team at the moment but the youth team's success has got to bode well for the future."
-
Will the NextGen Series continue next year? Or will this 'UEFA Youth League' that starts next season replace it?
-
Thought Kinsella had a great game ......
Is he any relation to Mark or Brooke ?

I had a similar thing happen when I took my missus on the tour about six years ago. They went round asking who everyone followed there were fans from various clubs in Europe included some Bayern fans who gave me some dirty looks when I said I was a Villa fan. The guy basically took the piss when I said who I followed and it was along the lines of why do you follow them? To which I replied "Well at least we've won the European Cup" obviously couldn't use it now but it felt good at the time and soon shut him up.

Only the Daily Heil has anything on their website about this victory.
Doesn't speak well of other football media outlets.

Real Madrid had won the European Cup several times before the British press cottoned on to it.
-
Lewis Kinsella and Janoi Donacien were both superb and depending how things end up this season could do a job next. Carruthers would have had a run but Lambert would be crucified if we lost the game. Robinson and Grealish both will make it.
-
Hurray, and I forget to watch this game arrghh but there is repeat at midnight :) on Eurosport 2 HD (Channel 526 on Virgin)
-
I think there was an incident involving Carruthers at the start of the season which Lambert took exception to,and he's never really been involved first team wise since.Hopefully,he might have learned and Lambert might be ready to forgive.
Grealish really could be involved first team wise, next season
-
Great win. Very Proud.

Here's the Guardian match report - maybe I'm imagining things but it seems a little bit pro- Chelsea? As others have said on this thread, the Eurosport commentators were pretty shocking and this smacks of the same mentality. There is certainly an institutional media bias against Villa/(the city of)Birmingham/the Midlands. It's as though journalists and media commentators' brains are all set to a default mode that thinks: "Anything from the midlands = shit."
Anyway, enough of me ranting on, what is, a lovely evening. The report:
"Two second-half penalties for Aston Villa decided the destination of the NextGen Series trophy, the Under-19 European competition reaching its climax on the banks of Lake Como in Italy.
Chelsea had a tough passage through the knockout stages, where they defeated Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal, and in the first half especially they gave Villa plenty of problems with pacy attacking play. However chances were not taken and Villa, coached by the former Chelsea player Tony McAndrew, deserved credit for their resilience and the way they matched the London club in the second half.
Chelsea's confidence was dented after going behind soon after the interval, with the second goal coming right on the final whistle and shortly after they had been reduced to 10 men. More used to the bumpy pitch, having beaten Arsenal at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia three days earlier, the signs were Chelsea would get off to a good start in the final.
A Villa shot did clear the bar by some distance after a Nathan Ake error in the opening seconds but Chelsea hit back quickly with Lewis Baker playing Alex Kiwomya through the middle. Bradley Watkins, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, was quickly off his line to smother at the winger's feet.
Islam Feruz had a fierce shot saved inside the first 10 minutes, Jérémie Boga's confidence on the ball having created the chance. But when Villa did go forward Graham Burke shot tamely wide of Mitchell Beeney's goal. Chelsea should have gone ahead on 21 minutes. Ruben Loftus-Cheek won possession and Baker played the perfect pass inside the Villa left-back Lewis Kinsella. However, Kiwomya struck his shot just wide of the far post.
Chelsea were hit less than four minutes after the restart. Callum Robinson was near the byline when Alex Davey made contact with his leg. Robinson went down and Burke converted the penalty.
Kiwomya's day got worse on 88 minutes when he earned his second booking of the game. And Villa completed the task when Burke scored his second penalty with the final kick of the game, after Daniel Pappoe fouled Joshua Barton."

Same for the 1957 Cup Final . We were expected to cave in to the might of Duncan Edwards etc etc....but we didnt. We played as a team and won.
Just like today!!!

Bringing in your phone to training isn't really serious enough to exclude someone from the first-team for a whole season is it? And to have someone like Dawkins ahead of him FFS!

Not wise to upset Mr Lambert it would seem. I mentioned on the other related thread that in the semi against Sporting, Carruthers came across as a bit of a big head . But he played very well today and if he continues to impress Lambert will have to give him a chance to shine.
Grealish will need to develop his frame a bit. He appears to have the Chris Waddle skills lets hope they dont let him take penalties!!
-
I thought that with having such a young first team, Lambert might have been a bit reluctant to introduce
any more academy lads to the squad just yet.
Its been stated before that blooding Clark Bannan Albrighton etc when we did, may have harmed their
long term development.
Maybe the plan is to wait until we have a bit more of a steadier season before we try to bring through
the likes of Carruthers Grealish Kinsella etc
-

Definitely not Mark? He's an Aresenal youth team reject. Ha ha.
Arsenal had an abundance of LB when he was 16 but he has earned his spot now in the team and has made great progress. Scored a vital goal against Fernabahce and totally out fought one of there top players tonight. Great performance all round .......
-
Nobody has mentioned Watkins who i thought was superb in the 2 games i watched on tv. Similar to guzan; very quick off his line, narrowed the angles well and was excellent on crosses.
Well done the boys; hopefully 3 or more will make it at Villa !
Can someone please clarify as hearsay is doing my head in with regard to sons of ex Villa :
Is Graham the son of Mark (Burke) ?
Is Samir the son of Martin (Carruthers) ?
Is Lewis the son of Mark (Kinsella) ?
-
Seeing as I started the Sporting one, I'm starting this before anyone else does in the hope that it's lucky.
It can be a Pre-Match, Match and Post-Match thread rolled into one to avoid causing too much clutter.
Plus, it can take our minds off the first-team's performance today.
Kick off is 5.00pm UK time tomorrow, coverage commences 4.30pm on Eurosport.
Help yourself for the rest of the season.
-
Not in favour of all in one match thread. Seen that on other forums and its more clutter than clarity. I say stick to our format.

I think I started another one for the first-team once and we lost so my "luck" only works for Yoof games!
You've already started the Stoke thread anyhow and I have no wish to undermine your role, sorry.

I thought one thread was better as a youth game will attract a lot fewer posts, even for a final.
For the first-team games where you get hundreds and hundreds of posts, it makes more sense to have separate threads. On this occasion, I thought one thread was better.
Again, apologies if I annoyed anyone with this.
-
Undermine me!
This is getting a bit too S&M for my liking.
I know we won and everyone feels like celebrating, but I'm just not that kind of boy.

I did the same thing with the pre-season games. One all singing and dancing thread is all that's needed for these games.

Probably known already but Sid's kid (Henry) is in the academy

Nope, not imagining things. That reads like a piece out of chelsea's next matchday programme. But they're not all like that; here's one that's a little more appropriately weighted

Much better but no mention of Callum Robinson.
-
What great news. Bodes well for the medium term - provided that certain people in club hierarchy appreciate that not all of that team - and realistically a couple at most - will have what it takes to become stand-out first team regulars.

In fairness to whoever wrote the guardian article, part of the reason it sounded so pro-chelsea was probably because of how match reports are written. Mr Journo watches the first half, and then does a write up of it during half time. However, they usually have to send off the report to their editor almost straight away at the end of the game, so the summary of the second half tends to be a lot shorter. Chelsea were the better side in the first half, hence more attention being paid to them (although im sure there is an element of bias in there- sadly there are a lot more people interested in Chelsea than there are in the Villa)

I hope the lads get to parade it around Villa Park at the Fulham game.
It should get the crowd going and really lift the place.

What a fantastic achievement. A bright spot in a thoroughly shit season. I hope the seniors sat and watched like we did.

Andi did, but he probably knows a lot of the players personally anyway compared to some of the more senior bought players.
-
I watched it on TV and cheered on our team.
What talent they have!
Loved the goalkeeper, Brad. Please, let's keep him.

We should never again employ a goalkeeper who isn't called Brad.

Absolutely, we should be scouring the Maternity Hospitals, 1st Brad we come across, sign him up

Haven't seen a bad one in a Villa shirt yet :)

Wonder what Brad Pitt's like at football. Hes American his name is Brad therefore it stands to reason he must be a great goalie!

We should put in a bid for Brad Jones, Liverpool's reserve keeper.
