Those ones of the Holte End brought back so many memories, good and bad. One was relating to my Mom who passed out in the Lower Holte in the game v Sunderland in 1975 ! She had to be helped to the front by the medics. The weather that day was very bright & sunny and (how fitting) as we had sealed promotion from the old Division 2. If I'm not mistaken we beat them 2-0. I have her to thank for my love ofg all things Villa, God Bless you Mom. She is now a Holte Ender in the sky (since 1986).

What a great set of photos Legion. Love the ones of the Holte and the snowbound Witton- what must it have been like scrambling down the bank after that game! One year in the early 70s days Ansells used a picture of the matchday Holte End in an advert for their Bitter.

The A.V floodlights were a thing of beauty and really set us apart from all the other clubs who just had boring square floodlights. At night when driving along the Expressway they seemed to float like guardian angels over our historical ground. I for one would love to see them returned. Perhaps a "Bring back the A.V floodlights" campaign should start.

Some superb photos in here, thanks for sharing.  The one taken from the back of the Witton End in the snow is the first view I ever had of Villa Park.  Only exception being that the Witton Lane stand was the one built for the World Cup.

Whenever I think of or someone asks me about Villa Park, that is the the image that comes in my head.  Villa Park is just not the same for me anymore I'm afraid

Just looked it up in the Weir and the Wonderful book. Taken at Ashton Gate on 3rd Sept 1977. Game finished 1-1. A few weeks ago I was going through a box of some of my old Villa stuff and I found two packs of the old Terry Weir photos that we bought off Terry when I was a kid. One set is from the 5-1 over Liverpool, the other includes that Brian shot as well as some of the '77 LC final. Really wish I had a scanner so as I could put them on here.

For anyone interested in old Villa photos I can't recommend the Terry Weir book highly enough. It truly is superb.

I think it's the second FA Cup, which they stopped using in 1910.

Some wonderful photos on here but this is my favourite, simply because it's the view I had for the last 15 minutes of every game when I was a kid (apart from the Witton Lane Stand on the left had been replaced by then). We always started the game down the front of the Witton End but moved to the back during the second half so that as soon as the final whistle went we could turn and run down the bank at the back. That dirt track through the weeds was the fasted way out but looking back now I'd be surprised if it didn't cause a few injuries. Much more fun than the queuing I now have to do to get away of my seat!
Has anyone got a picture that shows the bank at the back of the Witton? I don't recall ever seeing one.

23/8/80. Peter Withe scored both goals in a 2-2 draw. They were his first goals for us in what was his third appearance.
By Xmas he had only added another 4 to take his league total to 6. In his final 16 games of the run in he scored 14, taking his tally to 20 and the Villa to the top.

It wa indeed v Bristol City at Ashton Gate, a 1-1 draw.  I was there, with my mate Steve Weavin and his dad, who drove us to the game.  We were in the upper tier of the stand you can see in the background of the photograph.  I remember this goal vividly, as spectacular seen from our seats as is shown in Terry Weir's photograph.

Who can put a healthy guess on when that was taken?  I don't think I've ever seen the Holte more sparse than that.   Seems like everyone is huddled into the middle.

I'm pretty sure it was the Blackburn game during 1962-63, when the winter was so bad that football was virtually postponed for a couple of months. We were skint and desperate for gate income so we put this match on even though the pitch was unplayable - the snow was rolled to make it just about possible. As a result the pitch was so damaged that we were the last club to play again once the weather improved, we had a backlog of fixtures and our worst run of defeats ever. The Mercer Minors never recovered.

That is definitely versus Blackburn Rovers in 1963, I was at it.  Score was 0-0 and the touchlines that day were painted blue.  The same colour as my arse as it was that cold.  The year of the big freeze.  I remember it as clear as if it was yesterday; yet I can't remember what I had for my breakfast today!  Aston Villa...I love you.

It looks literally like they are playing on an ice rink.

And if I hadn't been there with my bluenose mate, there would have been even fewer on the Holte.

Maybe not an iconic photo but the first time I ever cried at a football match upon realising we wouldn't win the league (I was 12).

As an aside, how awesome does the Holte End look!

Good picture, but there's always something not so iconic about seeing a football shirt with a sponsor's name on it.

If that last one is too modern then how about this one?

It's circa 1923, and shows Witton born Cyril Spiers giving some of his team mates a lift home after a game. Again not exactly iconic, but a great photo nevertheless.

That's a good one Danno. Where's it from?

I've always suspected Claude Monet was a Villa fan.

Look at the Doc in that kit. Something about it reminds me of Alan Partridge in his leather thong.
