Four at the back I tells you, four at the back!

However - IT'S STILL TWO IN MIDFIELD. I fear for that middle third, I really do. You'd have thought Lambert would like midfielders given his playing background, but he seems to hate the position for some reason.

Who would you drop between N'Zogbia and Weimann though, Monty?

Shocked our Graham has not come straight in. We need steel and Lambert said so himself, why wait to get it in there.

Would prefer Baker at left back too for both corners and solidity. Think we might get whooped.

Neither. I'd be tempted to drop Gabby, though I see why he's in the line-up as he was good second half on Tuesday.

Think that is a 4-5-1 with Gabby and Andi wide and Charlie through the middle

Good decisions, because respectively they a) couldn't give a shit and b) really, really needs a break.

It's a 4-2-3-1 really though, because Zog isn't going to make up much by way of defensive numbers in midfield. He's going to stay up the pitch, so we really might get overwhelmed in midfield again.

Totally agree. His pace is more effective later in the game.

Simply the pace of the game. Ligue 2 to Goodison Park is an unbelievable step up in terms of pace. Sylla could come on later in the game when it's slowed down a bit, but he might get overwhelmed first half.

Oh KEA may well get overwhelmed as well, especially in a two with Westwood. I'd have started all three myself, taken Gabby out of the side and given the middle some solidity and numbers, as well as giving Sylla the support of two midfielders alongside him to help him ease in.

Pace of the game? We've got KEA and Westwood, hardly speed demons, and KEA hasn't shown himself to be up to the pace of the PL since he arrived. By the time Sylla comes on, it's very possible that the game will be out of reach. I'd sooner we started him so the game is close heading into the latter stages, than bring on when it might be meaningless.

Four across the back is good but we should be absolutely packing the midfield in front of them.
We seem to be surrendering the middle of the park before a ball is even kicked,.

Pace of the game isn't necessarily sprint speed, it's about how much time you have on the ball and how quickly you have to make decisions. Especially in deep midfield, that would be a huge shock to Sylla no matter how good he is, just because of where he's come from.

In any case, that's the thinking behind the decision. As I've previously stated, I'd have started all three.

There's absolutely nothing to lose by playing them. The current lot have shown they a not up to it against inferior opposition. I'm not suggesting changing it up is the answer because we could still be beaten, but it would have different to same players trotting out. Even from a energy standpoint, we might have gotten an extra lift simply because they are new.

I know exactly what pace of the game means. Mentally or physically, KEA has shown he isn't there yet. We don't have time to integrate. We have change things and be creative now. The time for steady development passed us by when we decided to roll over in January to put us in the position we are in. We need a catalyst to change the momentum and given the limited choices, choosing the same again in my opinion isn't it.

Thats Lamberts major weakness he refuses to have a defensive team.No one wants the crap Mcliesh served up but at times espec against much stronger opposition you need to keep game tight. Its what QPR have done under Harry.

Firstly, sorry about the miscommunication, just you used the phrase 'speed demons', so I was just making sure I had used the right phrase. Anyhoo.

I agree entirely, I'm just trying to think what Lambert's reasoning could be. As often this season, it's not the easiest thing to try and work out!

Just gotta make sure gabby and weimann stay wide. Gabby has a tendency to switch off and wander inside, as he did towards the end against Newcastle. Weimann needs to keep baines pinned back. Stretch them across the pitch, make a bit of space for CNZ to conjure something up, chance of coming away with something. End up too narrow, we won't have enough of the ball for our front four to make an impact

... but it could just as easily destroy them before they have really started their careers at Villa, although I understand the frustration of having new signings and not playing them!

That obviously raises the question of why buy them in the first place but I am afraid only Lambchop can answer that question!

i'm not surprised both Sylla and Dawk are on the bench. It's asking a lot to chuck either straight in after less than 2 days at the club.

At least it's 4-3-3.

I would have had Baker in there instead of Clark and Delph for KEA, but I assume Delph is injured. Other than that the team is our best shot of getting something.

What does Clark have to do to be dropped!? He's a liability as much as Bannan is in midfield. He'll lose his man and lose the challenge on every header...as he has done all season.

If we are going to go with that line up then we better keep the ball and attack them. The is no point having forwards and playing without the ball for 80 minutes. It leads to one thing, and one thing only.

His biggest problem this season has been his bloody awful touch. Lost count of the number of times he's shinned it 5 yards to an opposing striker...

Exactly. And,another danger with that line up is an early goal for us will invite their pressure and we are not comfortable when forced to defend. I think the side lacks a bit of balance so would have preferred a more defensive left-back. I guess we have Sylla if we need to shore it up at any point.

You have to massive defensive discipline with that type of line up, and strength at the back in win the ball and not give it away. Bennett's confidence is very low right and they will be targeting him, and Baines will be overlapping a lot on the left. I don't know who is going to compete with Fellaini in the box either. I know I shouldn't be so miserable so early but the side doesn't instil any confidence in me.

i'm not surprised both Sylla and Dawk are on the bench. It's asking a lot to chuck either straight in after less than 2 days at the club.

At least it's 4-3-3.

I would have had Baker in there instead of Clark and Delph for KEA, but I assume Delph is injured. Other than that the team is our best shot of getting something.

forgot about Delph , he really is becoming Jenas

Agreed TV. It's a better line-up than the Newcastle game, but then almost anything in a sensible formation would be.

CNZ has shown signs that he's up for it. He's gaining in confidence but I really don't want to see him through the middle. I'd rather see him attacking the flanks, as well as Gabby too. I think we could have some joy attacking their flanks with pace. Andy can drop off to link play and make runs beyond Benteke.

I'd look to see KEA starting to look like a solid international. He looked okay in his first half a dozen games, settled in fairly well without really excelling, but he's been bobbins ever since. However, because he's got more physical stature in the middle I would have picked him today. He's played DMF for club and country in previous years, I thought we signed him as such, but he really has been neither here nor there. I'd like to see him impose himself today and try and look like he's worth having played at a high level.

Of course he'll play shite though.

Like some of the other players, I think he probably has got what it takes to be a decent Premier League player, but the blend of players is wrong. If we play 4-2-3-1, which I think is a good formation for the players we have, then KEA as the deep, playmaking type of defensive midfielder alongside a, well, a big old unit, really, would be a god combination. BUt as it is, he and Westwood are sort of the same, same with Delph, and to a lesser degree, Bannan (although I don;t think Bannan is a deep-lying defender at all, really.)

AND THAT'S A GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! BENTEKE!

Exactly. And,another danger with that line up is an early goal for us will invite their pressure and we are not comfortable when forced to defend. I think the side lacks a bit of balance so would have preferred a more defensive left-back. I guess we have Sylla if we need to shore it up at any point.

Clark is shit. Our defence is atrocious.

N'Zog needs to stay on the right. We have to attack the space Baines will leave. Everton will score more, so we have score more goals. Simple as.

Will Lambert see sense? No. Weimann isn't being utilized anywhere near his best playing out wide.

What result do we want from Wigan v Southampton? Wigan on 21 points and Saimts on 24 as it stands.

draw? Keep as many in the mix as possible, a Wigan win would be the worst result in my view.

Exactly. We need to use every possible avenue of attack possible and use our assets, including the pace of players like Gab and Zog.

I once saw Glos city 4-1 up at Halesowen after 75 and lose 5-4 after two of the most ridiculous penalty decisions ever (really - they made Jay Rodriguez look honest). I think the ref scored the 5th.

One of our better first halves for a while, then.

Benteke looking excellent again, N'Zogbia and Agbolahor playing well, Westwood too. Weimann hasn't been in it, KEA looks a bit ponderous as usual. CLark has made some great tackles and shown some dismal positioning. Vlaar has been solid, as has Lowton.

Bennett, though, has been really poor. I still think there's a good player in there, but he needs to be taken out of the firing line, I think.

We have fluffed our lines so many times at crucial times in games this season. We are not a bad team, we just lack that little bit of composure that a bit of experience brings both ends.

It's only a small thing but it's making a big difference today, but Guzan is kicking everything today instead of constantly throwing short to a centre half.
It does give the defenders a break and let's them 'reset'

Lots of good performances only count if you accumulate the points. We should have got something against United at home, Swansea away, Newcastle on Tuesday and against Everton today.

Our defence is beyond a joke.
