Interesting selection. Westwood must have a niggle or run out of legs, as he and Bannan together have been a bright spot. The midfield looks very, very lightweight, but I am pleased Lowton looks like he is dropping into the back 2/3. Interesting to see if Herd plays in the back 3 or shielding a back 4.

My guess for formation is:
--------------Guzan
Lichaj-Lowton-Herd-Clark-Bennett
------Ireland-Bannan-Holman
--------Benteke-Weiman

Sorry to see Westwood left out , nice to see Weimann back in .

Can only think Westwood's done in. Started every game of last 10-12 and for his first run in the prem, he has covered a lot of ground lately. Resting him I can understand, I think Bannan was rested against Spurs to give us one or the other in these games. Bannan's hollywoods are more likely to catch Wigan out than Spurs too. I hope it is a bit more 4-2-3-1 though, with Herd playing holding than at the back.

Important we don't lose. It is a six pointer but a draw wouldn't be a complete disaster. They need the three points more than we do. I always thought 19 points after this game would have us on course to stay up. I still think we will have a better second half of the season and could get another 20+ points.

Come on Villa!!

This midfield is far too unbalanced for me and Holman for all is enviable workrate cannot control a ball half the time.  We have to get something out of this but I feared an early goal more than anything else.  The players  will be panicking.

I think it's clear that points aren't everything in football - the manner of our defeat at Chelsea has just completely destroyed us confidence-wise well beyond the points lost. The Spurs thing was kind of inevitable, and this couldn't look less like a side who beat Norwich and Liverpool an aggregate 7-2 in a week. They look down and out.

I mean honestly let's start thinking about it. What is the difference so far between the first half of last season and the first half of this season?

I can't think of much. Different players but same old shit performances with the odd good result;Chelsea away last season, Liverpool away this season.

We're still in the bottom 4/5 (3?) and our owner doesn't say or do anything.

I dislike the way our  defence sits waaaay too deep. Push the play up ffs

It's the three at the back problem. The midfield is overrun and they're getting forced back.

our belief has been destroyed. The Chelsea game was going to do one of two things. Get a strong positive reaction or exactly the opposite. There is not one string personaility in that starting line up and we are being torn a new one by every team now. The injuries need to clear up fast, players need to be bought or we are going in one direction. It was horrible last year and unless there is a Christmas miracle and sharpish it could be a lot worse in 2013.

It's three in midfield, but our lack of numbers in wide areas means the three are having to try and help out the full-backs, leaving it as more like two in midfield. Worst of both worlds.

Too many players who are not good enough.

Too much expected of too many young players.

A squad that really belongs in the Championship.

Major investment required in January, or we're in very deep trouble.

Our first 11 is good enough to be lower mid table while the kids learn, but losing so many at once has really killed us.

a side that would include Vlaar, Gabby, Petrov, Dunne, Bent used properly mixed in with the right kids would not be in this much trouble.

It doesn't matter though, because one and possibly two of those were never going to play. We need a much better squad.
Randy needs to start again...

a fully fit 1st 11 is easily good enough to finish 1/2 way or higher, but...........................

That's just it, though. A fully fit first 11, something no team goes through a whole season with.

I disagree. We've next to no quality, and too many kids.

I think the depth is the issue. We would not be winning at places like Liverpool if the first 11 was no use. The problem is they can't cope with too many out

It showed that we can play to a certain standard when literally everything goes right and that includes the opposition being inept in front of goal. We don't have the guns to perform to that level (by that level I mean mid table Prem standards) when the squad has been shredded by injuries and the opposition take their chances. I would argue that had we played Wigan after Liverpool we'd batter them. Instead we played Chelsea were ruthless in every sense and tore us to pieces.

We had pretty much the same team out against Liverpool, only changes are Bennett for Baker and Ireland for Westwood, the latter of which is unforced.  Liverpool was a freak result in a game where they missed chances are our front two who do have genuine potential clicked at the same time.  I think we are well past the point of looking back on the Liverpool game as some sort of sign that we are really infinitely better than the pile of cack we are at the moment.

Herd is just playing completely out of position.  He does not have the awareness to play centre half but has good energy and grit, which is best used in the spoiling midfield role or as an energetic full back.  He is a better right back Lichaj from what I have seen.

We are in decline while the likes of Everton and Spurs are racing ahead of us. It will be a long way back to where we should be and I'm not even sure the owners would be interested enough to keep us in this league, let alone start progressing properly again. Gambling that our youngsters were the new Man United c. 1993-1996 was a risk that has not paid off. We need to spend about £30m in January to ease the pressure on their young shoulders.

In many ways, the first 20 minutes were the worst of the season.  We seemed totally devoid of confidence, quality and energy.  The last 10 were marginally better but only because we've started to go long to Benteke.

Thought Ireland was the worst I've ever seen him, then oon 27 minutes he picked out Benteke over the top and from then on he was finding space, getting on the ball and the best route forward for us. He still can#t tackle, but we don't have anyone else to play that role.

Agree with Monty that the thing wrong is the formation. Apart from lacking quality almost everywhere :-)

At least with Bennett I've seen him go past a man, I've never seen Lichaj do that he's shit. Herd is massively overrated by some Villa fans because he came in with a bit of bite last year, but he's fucking rubbish as well. Awful, end of. No excuses this is shit.

Paul, what has Herd done to you, you've turning into a screaming little girl. We have a make shift team, Herd is being asked to play in a position he's no familar with, there's no defensive cover from the midfield, the full backs are constantly exposed and caught out of position but in your eyes it's all Herd's fault. Not just today, it's every bloody game.

There's not a great deal to cheer about admitedly but the least we can expect is the players to put a shift in, something no matter where he plays, Herd never fails to deliver. Massively overrated? Nah. Scapegoat for some? Absolutely.

Fed up with the Herd bashing he's the type of player who will hound players all day and get stuck in, he's clearly trying to do a job for the team at the back and I for one think he's giving it everything he's got. His passing needs to improve but I'd have him in midfield happily at the moment.

Same goes for Bennett, he's clearly got quality and he's young and only played a handful of times for us, please don't get on his back.

That said, fucking abysmal start to the match but we can get the 3 points here.

The next 45 minutes are absolutely crucial for us.

As well as the obvious points issue, lose to this lot, and can you imagine how much worse the confidence will be?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on December 29, 2012, 04:01:37 PM
Thought Ireland was the worst I've ever seen him, then oon 27 minutes he picked out Benteke over the top and from then on he was finding space, getting on the ball and the best route forward for us. He still can#t tackle, but we don't have anyone else to play that role.

Agree with Monty that the thing wrong is the formation. Apart from lacking quality almost everywhere :-)

Largely agree.  He was easily the worst player on pitch for the first 25minutes, he did improve afterwards but I'd still take him off for Westwood at half time.

Lichaj has been terrible, far too central defensively which gave Beausejour far too much space when Wigan were bossing possession, offers nothing going forward either.

I think Bennett, Weimann, Bannan and Lowton have generally been good and Benteke went from terrible to threatening once we started getting a foot on the ball.

It's not all Herd's fault, hence I've mentioned Lichaj and Bennett being poor. However he's not a good player. By definition of your defence of him you must see he's not playing well. As I say I don't blame him alone and he does put a shift in, but he's just not good enough to start for Villa. There are plenty of others who fall into that category.

Well HT..... Well despite all my moaning we were getting a bit better towards the end of the first half...

All it takes is a scrappy villa goal and we could grow in confidence. We are due a slice of luck aren't we?
So sad we have been reduced to hoping for a scrappy goal against Wigan.  I could cry.

I am trying not to get as emotionally involved this season. I was a wreck during April and May last year, trying to 'hope for the best' this time around. I'm beginning to get used to the struggle for survival.

I wouldn't go too attacking, a point against them would at least maintain the status quo.

I think it may be too late unless we're buying 4-5 quality players.

Another Darren Bent style signing isn't enough, we need quality throughout the pitch, not just one or 2 big signings.

Lambert's policy of youth and potential is a season too early, we needed to ensure a safe position in the premiership first with experience and build from that. This will take us to relegation and a loss of a lot of money to the club.

The wages is the key thing.  Yes we spent £20M on players but we got half a dozen for that money so you can bet they're not earning fortunes.  And as we all know your finishing position correlates more to your wage bill than your transfer spend.

Randy let MoN spunk all the money then MoN fucked off.  Randy then showed us his football knowledge by employing shit managers who between them ran the club into the ground, allowing the squad to end up paper thin and short of quality.
We now have a decent manager who has fuck all to work with, a squad that would not get promoted from the division below us.
Randy needs to take ownership of the situation and spend big in january or if you think things look bad now wait till May...

It isn't incredible, it is entirely predictable.

Look at the squad. A few injuries and it falls so far short of acceptable, it is laughable.

Run down the squad, invest only in lower league dross with the hope it comes good, and you end up with a squad this piss poor.

Terrible stewardship from Lerner to reduce such huge investment to this in so short a spell of time.

Still, at least the wage bill looks a bit better.

LOL back in the bottom 3.

we need to buy good experience in J anuary, you can't expect such a young and inexperienced team to get better without the help of older players to guide them in the right direction.

this is beyond belief what is happening. I actually thought we would win today.

Lerner should have sold up in August 2010. He hasn't got a clue.

He started with good intentions, trusted his manager 100 percent, threw loads of money around, realised too late that we couldn't afford it, his manager dumped on him, he made a poor appointment, had to throw more money at it, made a truly gobsmacking appointment, then got fixated by a dream that we could turn into Ajax and get by by signing cheap players and using academy graduates.

It's a cliche because it's true.

Some of it ... a lot of it is hysterically delivered received wisdom.
Too fucking right I am hysterical, anyone who loves the club has every right to go fucking ballistic.

Lambert has to take a fair share of the blame today. This pissing formation has not just seen us beaten in the last two games, it has seen us ripped to shreds yet he sticks with it and compounds the problem by selecting the most ridiculously unbalanced midfield known to man and let's Wigan have a free run at our shellshocked defence.  We may well all be sticking with him but he is contributing heavily towards this utter devastation at the moment.

It isn't a new manager we need, it is a realisation that kids and lower league players alone are nothing like enough.

So tell that to Lambert, he's the man that buys the players.

He also has to work with the wage bill, hence all his signings being either lower league or selling European league, which means low (comparatively) wages.

There's no real proof of that though is there. Just putting two and two together and choosing a number that suits the argument. Obviously the wage bill had to be brought under control but it's still down to Lambert who he buys and I don't believe we now have a wage ceiling on players. There's plenty of clubs with far smaller wage budgets than us so I don't see it as a principle reason for Lambert buying kids.

McLeish was brought in to lower the wage bill. I'm sure not a lot has changed. I think Lambert would have bought better players if he had more money. Lerner's policy is to keep the wage bill down and stay in the Premier League.

Agreed. I mentioned a couple of pages ago that we were willing to stump-up the cash and wages for Dempsey in August. I don't think it's as cut and dried as telling Lambert he can only buy players on less than 30 grand a week. Lambert in his press conference yesterday made a telling comment that how experience has caused Villa's problems in the last couple of years. He wants to mould young players who happen to not cost the earth in fee or wage. That's his thing.

18 according to the match commentator. Against Wigan

I think he should offer his resignation after a run like this.

I think and hope Lerner would reject it, but in doing so, he absolutely must then back him properly in January. Big, big style.

If he's not going to get backed, if he's not going to be allowed to buy anything other than low wage players, then we're going down, it's as simple as that.

100% agree with all of this
I 100% disagree.  This manager can sort us out if he is given the resources to do it.

The fucking idiot was given more than most managers in the summer, on top of a team that even Mcleish managed to keep up!  3-0 at home against Wigan after an 8-0 and 4-0 - he's got to go, if he's got an ounce of decency he'll resign, he's clearly not up to the task.

So you sack him tonight.

Then what?

Two days before the window opens, what do you then do?

It's easy to be righteously angry, especially when there's reason for it, but it's much harder seeing a way out of the mire we are in.

The only thing that would rubber stamp our relegation more than not spending in January would be to change manager right now. I can't think of a more daft thing to do.

Lambert going is the last thing we need. What we need is 4 players in January, and some of the other lads being fit. We have 1 centre half today and second half against Spurs realistically. We need a big hard bugger in the middle, and some options going forward.

I still think we will be ok.

He has to be backed in Jan.
The whole Ajax nonsense was a badly thought out pipe dream from square one. if they had travelled to Holland they would have very quickly seen why Ajax were successful and that it has less to do with youth players and more to do with their place in the Dutch food chain.
The club wanted to give the fans the sense that we had a plan, when in reality we have been all over the place since pubehead left.

Collymore's tweets are really giving Randy hell. He is really putting the boot in. We must be the worst run club in the League.

Why what's he saying?

That e don't have a PL squad and you need a mix of youth and experience. If quality leaves it must be replaced by quality, Luke Young, Barry, Ashley young, Downing, Milner all left for big money and were never replaced. We sold Cahill on the cheap. He actually said we need to invest or die (which is way OTT).

No one outside of villa gives a shit about young players, injuries ,or inexperience.

Collymore just tweeted this

Arsenal 27th Dec 2009 Friedel - L Young - Dunne - Cuellar - Warnock - A Young - Petrov - Milner - Downing - Gabby - Heskey.

Even allowing for Heskey, compare that side with the side today and you see the problem straight away.

It is going to be a long hard slog, but if Randy is there today which is rumoured it may help convince him 20 million or so to the manager might be useful.

3 games in such a short space of time, with the massive defeat of Chelsea has hurt. Vlaar out, Baker out from half time against Spurs meaning 7 goals since he was out.

Bennett looks like he will be ok to me. Lichaj and Herd are not good enough in the slightest.

We've heard about nothing but the wage bill for years now.

There is absolute proof there - look at the discussion of the wage bill from the club, the endless talk of self supporting, and then look at the incoming signings and every one of them fits that bill.

Collymore just tweeted this

Arsenal 27th Dec 2009 Friedel - L Young - Dunne - Cuellar - Warnock - A Young - Petrov - Milner - Downing - Gabby - Heskey.

Even allowing for Heskey, compare that side with the side today and you see the problem straight away.
when I saw the team lineup against spurs I thought to myself how this team is unrecognizable compared to just two years ago. right now I can say maybe 6 definite starters. guzan, lowton, vlaar, holman, benteke and weimann.

Keep faith based on what though? sorry there needs to be something from the club and consecutive massacres does not inspire faith.
Fuck it then, lets just give up.

Well that's the attitude coming from the very top down at B6 to be fair.
I don't give a fuck if Randy has given up.  I and many others will never throw the towel in, we were here before Randy and we will be here when he has fucked off....

My point is that the club expect us to still dig deep into our pockets when they won't.

My point was in order to keep faith, you need to be given something to keep faith in. I'll keep supporting the club as I always have done, but at the moment there is nothing coming from top to bottom to believe our troubles can be sorted.

That's called shock

Eh?  Just heard an immense amount of booing on my stream.

Thankfully I'm not watching it and was responding to the previous comments. It's hard to imagine that the locals having paid their hard cash over the past few games, plus Christmas won't be venting their spleen.

if money was so tight in the summer, it begs the question why lambert bought benteke and bowery when we already had bent, gabby, weimann and delfouneso as strikers, and failed to get a strong midfield player which it was clear was a vital need.

obviously benteke is looking a good buy, but if there was a limited budget surely we could have done without another forward and spent the money where it was needed more.

and a stricter wage bill does not necessarily mean having to buy youngsters from league 1. other clubs have low wage bills but dont have a team full of kids.

Yep, Randy will be over in the Summer getting his staff to ring us pleading for us to buy season-tickets for the Championship. Bright future?....

When was the last time we were 3 up away from home and looked as utterly comfortable as Wigan have here?

Anfield. I suggest you buy yourself a memory stick.

Comfortable?

I certainly don't remember that bit. I remember us throwing bodies in front of everything at 3 up. Wigan barely had to break sweat to hold onto their lead today, we looked so blunt.

Lucky deflection got them a goal...just because we're used to losing a slim lead we're hanging on to doesn't mean it's always like that. Liverpool had lost their way and really didn't look like scoring until they got lucky.
It's bad and results don't lie. No cause for hysteria though. Stay Calm and Win The Cup. UTV

Terrible week to be a Villa supporter. Tough to see how we go forward as a club right now. Maybe the transfer window will have some pleasant surprises.

It's also called having the sound muted, there was plenty in evidence from the stream I watched.

Considering the numbers left in the ground I'd agree that the booing was quite spirited.

Yep, I feel for Lerner when he's down to his last $1.5 Billion - money is very tight.

The only good thing about being this end of the table is that I have lost all interest in the doings of the red and blue scum of manchester and the other Sky arse teams. And that is a pleasure.

A three game bad run. Yes we may get relegated but there are still 18 games to go to try and save our PL status. At least it will be 'exciting' or nerve wracking rather than boring mid-table mediocraty?  Plus we may get a trip to Wembley too!!

We have to stick with PL - changing the manager would be utter madness IMO. It is tight at the bottom - string an unbeaten run together things will look a whole lot different.   If we get relegated so what - I think a more exciting league to get out of and I think PL would get us out of it??

Think positive chaps!!

I very rarely look at this thread but agree with a great deal of it.
It is a pathetic situation. We can all have faith or just blind faith but this is fucking crap.

Just heard Lambert say on the radio after the game, that he won't be looking  to bring any experience in during the window, but will try to add some young hungry kids if he can. Never dreamed i would be saying this, but the longer this guy is in charge the more clueless he seems. He comes across to me as being even more stubborn than the loser we had in charge last year.If Lambert is serious in what  he says, then Championship here we come i'm afraid .This present squad just not good enough
