Holman. Really like his workrate and the way he plays. He's non stop. He also makes things happen too. He can force errors, and can pick a pass, he'll try and make things happen. You also sense he'll score a few screamers this season. He's been unlucky not to have a couple already.
Second fave, Guzan. Like how assured he is and I think he's gonna get even better the more he plays. He plays with passion too.
-
I like Bannan. Proper footballer and is in my opinion very underrated.
-
I too like Bannan. He's got a creative spark in him that not many of our players have these days.
Guzan has done excellently, it's nuts really, considering how close he was to leaving in the summer.
-
Westwood. He looks really composed.
-
Benteke for me - the guys an absolute beast!
And can't argue with Holman as he's the type of all action player we've needed for a while. His effort and tenacity is rubbing off on the rest of the team, IMO.
-
Ickle Barry Bannan. We have'nt got anyone else who can spray the ball around like he can. He'd be in my team every week.
-
I'm actually getting excited that we don't have just one talisman. Any of Vlaar, Westwood, Bannan, Holman, Gabby, Guzan and Benteke can get you off your seat.
But, I'd plump for Benteke right now. Even on Saturday, when he didn't have the best of games, he looked like he could conjure up that yard of space that would win the game.
-
Benteke for me too. He's the first hero in the making we've had for a while, if England elect international defenders keep bouncing off him the way they do then it will be sooner than later.
-
Gabby.
When Benteke and Westwood have given me moments like Gabby has then that might change my mind
-
Benteke and Westwood- two top signings , and I hope we can hold onto both for several years.
-
Also an honourable mention to Lowton. His names not come up yet, but I think he's doing very well!
-
Wee Barry, I've always thought there was a good player in there somewhere and it looks as if Paul Lambert is managing to get it out of him.
-
Is it a good sign that so many have been mentioned? I think so.
I really like lots of them. I also think Bennett looked good until his injury.
-

Agreed, the players signed by lambert look great value so far, I think Bennett when fully fit will be fine , he's had a few injuries and not really had a decent run yet.
-
For the first time in ages, there isn't a player in the first team who I can't stand. Favourites would be either Weimann or Bannan.
-
Guzan,
Think he's our new Spinksy and play for us a hundred years
-
I love everything about Benteke. His touch is superb, he operates really well in tight spaces and he's strong as an ox. He'll only get better with better service.
Not that he's my favourite player but I'd like to throw some love in the direction of Enda Stevens. Very solid, if unspectacular and he's had to face some really good players in the past few weeks and hasn't been given the Nathan Dyer vs Stephen Warnock treatment in any game.
-
Gabby. I bloody love Gabby. He may not be our best player but he's provided some fantastic moments over the years. Plus he genuinely seems to love the place even if stories about him being a lifelong fan are exaggerated.
-
As someone said previously there are about 7/8 candidates...
Brad, Vlaar, Lowton, Clark, Westwood, Wiemann, Benteke, Holman and not forgetting Gabby.
Says a lot when two of our big money signings don't even get a mention!
-
I'd like to see them get a few wins under their belt; then we really can shout about them with pride.
Bannan, Westwood, Clark, Weimann and Benteke all look good. Lowton has had his moments, and I am also a big fan of Herd. Lichaj is underrated and seems to be hard as nails as well.
-
Ciaran Clark, I just think he has a lot of class for somebody so young and that he is a fast learner.
Vlaar and Benteke will be heroes if we can progress
-
Benteke has become the player who has probably been most talked about when AVFC is mentioned. But Lowton-Concrete-KEA have had a big impact in the team. Think Weimann will become a massive player for Villa in the near future ...........
-
For the first time in ages, there isn't a player in the first team who I can't stand.
That's a good point and might explain why the crowd are so behind all of them.
-
I like Ireland 8), with the other names being mentioned.
He links up the play well in forward positions, his workrate is good, seems to calm the play and gets it flow better than without him.
-
don't really have a favourite at the moment, I just love the club.
UTV
The Doc
-

Good call (the first sentence.)
Although I do find myself questioning why when we apparently have all these players we all think are great we are currently 18th in the table.
-
Although I do find myself questioning why when we apparently have all these players we all think are great we are currently 18th in the table.
It's a good question.
In many respects the praise for the likes of Benteke and Westwood are largely based on pontential as much as present contribution. As a young side we're learning as we go and the recent performances are generally better then early season ones.
-

I dont see what big impact kea has had on our team- I think he's been the only new signing who has looked below par.
-
Weimann for me. Really would like to see him succeed at Villa!
-
Vlaar for me, I was worried when he went off on Saturday but the young un's did well without him.
-
Can't stand any of them, bunch of leaching prima-donnas who are....oh, er, sorry, that was last year and the year before....
Can't stand any of them . second-rate championship crap who are only going to take us one way...oh, er, sorry that is the nay'sayers!
:-)
Gabby obviously, with Benteke a close second.
-
I've seen Bannan have some unbelievably good games in the stiffs and the youth team. Great to see him doing it at the senior level. He's my favourite. Honorable mentions to Clark, Baker, Albrighton, Herd and Weimann who I've also followed through the reserves.
-
I like Ireland and Westwood.
I'm not keen on NZogbia & Agbonlahor if I'm honest.
-
Bannan and Gabby.
-
Ireland - his vision, touch, passing - all excellent. Also he seems to have started working for the team when he plays.
Weimann - I love his work rate and finishing. He's been unlucky not to score more goals this season and think they'll come for him soon. Also seems to love playing for the club, which links to...
Bannan - Always admired him since I first saw him which must have been 07/08 sort of time. Great passer and a hard worker. Surprised he hasn't scored more goals as well!
Westwood - Didn't think he'd be much good after Southampton but he's been on fire since he came back into the side at Sunderland. Looks extremely promising. Can see why Swansea apparently wanted him as his passing/composure is absolutely superb.
Vlaar - Great signing and will hopefully be with us for years to come - if he is, I can see him making a name for himself like Laursen did.
Baker - That word again - Composure. Most composed player I've ever seen come through the ranks, which with his strength, heading ability, tackling etc is a great asset to him. Think he'll be a big player to us in years to come.
To be honest, I could probably carry on writing and end up describing the whole squad, bar one or two. As others have said it's very hard to dislike anyone out of this lot. People can slate the football we're playing - it's a results business, but I'm really enjoying it at times and if nothing else, Lambert has got them wanting to play.
-
Gabby for me Mr Villa.
-
Impressed with Benteke but my favourite for a while now has been Weimann. I hope he gets an extended run because I think he's great at off the ball movement, is a natural finisher like Bent, and has more to his all round game.
-
A lot of Weimann fans aren't there!
Vlaar, Lowton, Guzan, Benteke in that order at the moment for me.
-
Gabby for me Mr Villa.
Still needs to do more for me I'm afraid.
-
Gabby for me Mr Villa.
If the question was least favourite I would agree with you.
Hutton and Warnock still on the books eastie....
Gabby should be the most common name, longest servant etc, but consistency, sulking on the wing and not carrying a goal threat for 3 seasons at all have seen him become a bit of a Paul Dickov like footballer with a bit more pace. Runs about a lot, is a nuisance, but not really a massive concern to the opposition until he switches it on once in a blue moon. Sad, but in the side for his work rate now, not his quality.
-
Edit.
Pointless drivel. Nothing to see here
-

Fair assessment Ozzie, regarding Hutton and warnock I wasn't thinking of them as they are on the way out.
As for gabby I'm pleased to see him improving in recent weeks but have been frustrated with him over the last couple of years.
His loyalty cannot be questioned but he is nowhere near the player he was 4 years ago, I hope that lambert can help him rediscover that form.
We have the nucleas of a very good young side and the future looks bright if we start to pick up a few wins.
Impressed this season by Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Westwood and benteke .
-
Vlaar.
Followed by Lowton, Westy, Weimann & Benteke.
-
Ireland, Benteke, Weimann, Guzan in no particular order. Honorable mentions to Bannan and Enda.
-
As others have said, it's very refreshing to look at our current squad and actually like all of them. I don't know about anybody else, but I haven't felt as connected to a Villa team as I do now for a very, very long time. I think this is because they're such a young, likeable group of lads, and given our current position in the league I literally feel like I'm fighting with them for every ball.
As for my stand-out favourite, it has to be wee Barry Bannan. He just seems like the only player in our squad with a proper bit of flair in him, and always brings a sense of urgency with him when he gets on the ball, which players like Ireland, who you see getting more praises, seriously lack.
If we're going to become this fast-paced, tika-taka, all-action team that fears nobody, I'd say we need to build the team around him.
-
Gabby, vastly underrated by many and one of the hardest working players we have who makes the team better when he's in it and on form. Lambert appears to value him too, which makes a change as his two immediate predecessors didn't use him effectively.
There are plenty of others who show promise but I have a nagging worry that if they fulfil that potential they'll be off and we'll all be trying to convince ourselves that they weren't that good anyway.
-
Got to be Bent. The man is a goal machine and kept us up last season. Also like Weimann.
-
Gabby should be the most common name, longest servant etc, but consistency, sulking on the wing and not carrying a goal threat for 3 seasons at all have seen him become a bit of a Paul Dickov like footballer with a bit more pace. Was that a reference to his goals at Citeh earlier this season? ;D
The way I've been describing him this season is as a grafter and decoy: whilst he's on the pitch, oppo defences know they'll get a run-around, and I think that benefits Benteke and Weimann. Also, he does his share of tracking back.
For where we are at the moment, that's the sort of player we need, isn't it?
-
Andreas 'Bill' Weimann.
-
Bannan and Clark for me.
Both have played a fair bit in poor sides and haven't really been given the chance tto show their quality. This season they've become an important part of the side and are both showing signs of being just as good as we hoped.
Of recent signings I think Lowton may turn out to be the best value, he looks comfortably good enough for the premier league and has all along. Living in Norway no one here had any idea who he was or where he came from and everyone at work who's watched us thinks he looks quality.
-
Benteke but Westwood is closing on the rails.
-
Wee Bazza. I've loved watching him play since he was in the reserves bossing games and being the team's 'quarterback. It's really good to see PL giving him the confidence to do it in the first team. Long may it continue.
Honorable mentions for Vlaar & Benteke.
-
I literally feel like I'm fighting with them for every ball.
That's the key point. That's how I have felt all season (despite being pissed off with some performances). You just can't fault the enthusiasm, effort and the fact that they improve and will get better. By the end of the season i expect Brad Guzan, Ciaran Clark, Ashley Westwood, Matthew Lowton and Christian Benteke to be household names.
That said we do need a few wins. But I am confident that we will grow as a team once we notch up a few wins.
-
Benteke is my favourite player of the moment, but Gabby is the real favourite and always will be.
-
All of them.
-
I too like Weimann but I also like Vlaar and Benteke
-
All of them.
+1
-
Need a poll
-
Lowton for me, he has been superb, even when moved to centre back.
-
If i had to pick another i'd say Baker. I just wished he'd stay fit because he looks a bloody good defender.
-
Need a poll
Provide the options and I'll happily oblige.
-
Benteke. Every part of his game has potential.
Dumping Smalling on his arse and then picking the pass for Weimann has been the highlight of the season for me.
From what little I see of the reserves nowadays, Daniel Johnson. Maybe I see too little reserve football but I can't understand why he has not had a first team run out yet.
Westwood looks to have a very good future ahead of him, as does Weimann.
If we are to operate successfully at the other end of the table I suspect Bannan, Ireland, Holman and Delph are going to have to give way to something better.
It would be a great shame in Delph's case, early glimpses of him suggested he had the necessary to become a very good all round player.
Has anyone else noticed that there are an increasing number of compliments being expressed in the media? Even Kamara offered a few words of appreciation on Sunday.
-
Stan. Some of the new bunch have been very impressive but they're still too new to have been taken to heart yet, for me at least.
-
Apart from the Stan, I think that the best is Benteke, but my favourite is Andreas Weimann, for THAT goal vs. Fulham, because he'a always PREPARED when is called in the team and for the way he is willing to sacrifice himself on the WING for playing 4-2-3-1 even if he could be a very good striker and could be more prolific playing closer the goal.
-
Lowton

-
Done. Option to change vote also included.
-
I've gone for Bannan, but i think Gardner deserves a mention. Before his injury he is the one young player i really feel will go on to big things. His contribution that led to Weimann scoring against Fulham was just as crucial as the finish. Hope he returns to where he left off. Weimann is looking better every game too.
-
Lowton for me considering he's played every game and made the jump 2 leagues really well
-
Difficult to select just one.
-
Stan. Some of the new bunch have been very impressive but they're still too new to have been taken to heart yet, for me at least.
Was going to say this too. But went for Gabby as he's playing at the moment and is also a senior player who obviously cares for the club and on his day can be devastating.
I've been very impressed with Westwood and Lowton in the last few games, he could be a real player! Same with Benteke.
-
Steve - saw Johnson was subbed after 36 minutes for Yoevil for not being too good last week, has he struggled out on loan?
-
They've sent him back haven't they, I just assumed he'd picked up an injury?
As for the thread question, probably either Vlaar or Guzan.
-
Westwood for me, composed on the ball and looks confident in the middle of the park, really think if Stan was fit they would make a very solid central midfield with Ireland/Bannan/Holman being able to be the attacking creative option, shame.
-
Good to see support for Guzan too. I think he is very good for us
-
Guzan, Petrov, Vlaar, Westwood and/or Benteke for me. Getting closer!
-
Guzan, Petrov, Vlaar, Westwood and/or Benteke for me. Getting closer!
Holman was 2 inches away from glory on Saturday. I am in the same position Every Saturday. ;D
-
Clark because, out of all of them, he really has been thrown into the deep end and has grown in stature with every game. I think he will learn so much from Vlaar and eventually could be our captain.
-
Guzan, Petrov, Vlaar, Westwood and/or Benteke for me. Getting closer!
Holman was 2 inches away from glory on Saturday. I am in the same position Every Saturday. ;D
A good spread then by the early voters, interesting times.
I do really hope that if we do drop, the club and fans stick with Lambert and this squad and see them grow and come back up.
-
Steve - saw Johnson was subbed after 36 minutes for Yoevil for not being too good last week, has he struggled out on loan?
I have no idea. The last I heard Yeovil wanted to extend the loan so I assumed he was doing well. Have just had a look around and he was indeed subbed early and then sent back to VP with a week to go on the loan.
-
It's been a long time since I felt such an affinity with the vast majority of our squad.
-
Benteke has become the player who has probably been most talked about when AVFC is mentioned. But Lowton-Concrete-KEA have had a big impact in the team. Think Weimann will become a massive player for Villa in the near future ...........
I dont see what big impact kea has had on our team- I think he's been the only new signing who has looked below par.
I admit his form has slipped. But he started really well and against Newcastle he was excellent. Not having a go at Bennet but i think he is the one player who looks very lightweight especially when you look at how well Lowton has adapted .....
-
Just my own slant on this, but your favourite player is not always the one you consider the best player
You can have a personal favourite for any number of reasons but he doesn't have to be the best player in the team
For example, and I will give my age away a bit here, but my all time favourite Villa player is Frank Carradus, always has been always will be, but he wouldn't make the top 30 of the best players I have seen at VP
-
Indeed John, Tony Daley is one of my all-time favourite Villa players, but he wouldn't be that high in the best player i've seen list.
-

As said I've mentioned before, the difference between Lowton and Bennett is that Lowton had a full summer with a premier league team, Bennett didn't and has had a few niggly injuries early in the season as well so he's been really disrupted. Given that I think he's settled in ok but needs an injury free run for a month or 2.
-
Thats a good point Paul. But two months is a lot of games and if we do not defend as a unit now it will get harder to gain any momentum. Think Lichaj is a more established player and has a lot of prem experience to deal with our battle .......
-
Wee Barry is my favourite. I love the idea of him as a player, and the prospect of him playing in the first team the way he used to for the reserves (not that I'm anywhere near sure yet that it will happen). He's the best player I've ever seen at that level, completely dominating games and dictating the way we played. If he can do that in the Premier League we will be a joy to watch.
-
I like our squad to be honest. No twats I know of. I do feel kinda bad for Shay.
Favourite? Probably Holman right now, I really love to see him bombing around.
-
I find myself not wanting to elevate Benteke up to favourite level as I can see him wanting away in the not too distant future and seeing everyoone on here calling him a judas bastard. In the meantime though i'll say he's exciting to watch.
-
Lowton for me, he has been superb, even when moved to centre back.
He was far better on Saurday after he'd moved to CB. I thought his first half was poor, with Podolski beating him comfortably several times (he seemed to get pulled out of position alot).
But, for the season so far, I agree that he's played really well.
-
Sorry legion I had to log off. That's what I wanted but now I can't choose #dilemma
-
Like everyone else I like a fair few of our current team, but the player I am most delighted to see get a goal is Gabs. Even if the only reason for that is that it doesn't happen often enough, that is the reason he got my vote. A Gabby goal makes me even happier than any other kind of Villa goal!
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
-
Gabby for me Mr Villa.
You could be on to something there, often mediocre, does something good every now and then to let you know there is/was potential, works hard and huffs and puffs a lot, not too much quality on the ball, not really rated outside Villa Park. Yep, Gabby could well be the personification of Villa.
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
I'm more concerned with N'Zogbia getting a vote!
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
Must be a H&V user!
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
Must be his heroic performance away at Burton Albion pre season.
-
Re: Marshall - I voted for him.
His amps are brilliant.
-
Can't believe Lowton not getting more votes, only 4 ?
Vlaar 13 votes ? Why ?
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
He's never put a foot wrong.
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
Must be a H&V user!
And his wife
-
How and why has Marshall got 2 votes?
I'm more concerned with N'Zogbia getting a vote!
I'm more concerned Albrighton got a vote. If ever a player was destined to drop down the leagues quicker than Stefan Moore, it's him.
-
Why hasn't Lichaj got any votes? That handle bar piece of godlike facial hair is brilliant. The new Olof's beard, and he needs to keep it.
-
I'd go for Guzan.
-
I went for him (Guzan) as well.
But I think we should be able to vote for as many as we want, quite frankly. All the lads need some appreciation!
-
Went for Holman, liked him the first time I saw him in a villa shirt. Plenty more to come from him also. Reminds me of a modern Cropley or Carrodus
-
Has to be Benteke, looks a real handful and is exciting to watch.
-
Westwood. for such a young lad, very composed, and importantly, does the simple things right. (ie passing to a fellow player). Good running with the ball, great distribution if needed, good marking, calm and assured. Because he doesnt make many mistakes, you can almost miss him on the pitch. Great signing
-
Went for Bannan. To be honest, I'm pretty surprised at how much stick he gets sometimes. He is quite often the only player who is brave enough to constantly demand the ball and try and make things happen. His passing range is excellent and he works incredibly hard for the team. Despite the moans whenever a long range pass doesnt come off, he does keep it simple and on the ground the majority of the time. In any case, the attempted long balls are at least an attempt at some form of first-time incision, as opposed to an aimless clunk upfield.
I would imagine that a number of his 'dinks' over the defence would pay off if matched by intelligent running. I don't particuarly rate Bent, and, without mixing threads, don't think he should be in the team, but his movement is something that Bannan has excelled at picking out in the past with a reversed thirty yard chipped pass. Benteke is a little bit more static. The amount of time that Robin van Persie peels off from the defence to receive a lofted pass straight through the middle is a prime example of what Bannan is trying to acheive.
I'm also pleased that Westwood is in alongside him. Measured passing and ease in possession is required to exert any controlled pressure against a team. Delph and Herd generally cause more problems than they solve.

Great post.
-
I voted west wood , I think 2m he is a bloody steel of a buy
-
Westwood. A touch of the Scholes to him. Minus the gingerness.
-
What a positive thread. Excellent.
Holman by the way.
-
Benteke, closely followed by Westwood and Vlaar.
-
I went for Vlaar, who seems to be the natural leader we've been missing for a while. Also a big fan of Lowton. Looks solid and consistent, pretty unspectacular but his defensive awareness is excellent. Reminds me vaguely of Mark Delaney.
-
Guzan, Petrov, Vlaar, Westwood and/or Benteke for me. Getting closer!
Still can't decide...
-
Would the OP mind me altering the thread title so more than one player can be chosen? If not, I'll amend the poll aswell.

I've long been a big fan of Bannan, but I went for Westwood perhaps just for novelty value. If that guy keeps on playing like this AND gets better with experience he will play for England, no question in my mind.
However, Benteke ran him a close, I love him. He's just got all the attributes of a classic Holte hero other than being Scandinavian. Also love Holman, brilliant Aussie attitude.
-
Guzan, Vlaar, Westwood, Holman and Benteke have all really impressed me this season for different reasons. I had to plump for Beneke as I think he'll bang in a few important goals this season and hopefully spearhead a charge back into Europe next!
