Also Bent is never going to get into form if we keep dropping him.

Surprised Herd at right back ahead of lichaj and that gabby is ahead of bent and Weimann, let's go get em boys!

Ah that makes sense. I'm not sure what Lambert is doing with Bent it seems very strange. I'm happy enough to see Benteke start, but it should be with Bent.

Why no Lichaj? Does PL just pick names from a hat game by game or does he actually have a plan? Bent, Bannan and Ireland, in particular, must wonder about the thought process.

Midfield looks lacking in spark and with a midfielder at right back and right back at centre half it's a worry.

Gabby for Bent doesn't seem strange at all to me. Or Paul Lambert, so that'll do me.

I'm getting more and more convinced that Bent is being forced out of the door

It does seem that he sees Benteke and Gabby as the future. If he does go then that cash needs to be reinvested almost immediately. Mind you, Bent did next to fuck all at Fulham last week. I trust Lambert so I really hope he's playing this one right.

Gabby does not deserve a start it's as simple as that. However hopefully he'll finally score today. Come on Villa we need to win this.

Seems we are playing pretty football but going no where forward .

I think I would have started Bent instead of Gabby and Nzog for Albrighton .

Come on villa . We have to win this.

Yes he is. I wonder if Lambert's gone 4-3-3, with Albrighton and Gabby wide of Benteke.

well Norwich will create chances , they created loads with Lambert and will be on a high from beating Arse.

I really hope leaving Bent out turns out to be the right decision. I think he should have started, he is our most likely goal scorer. I was certain he would score today. Hope Gabby finally starts scoring in the league again, or Benteke, our midfielders do not score many goals. N'Zogbia derserved a start, but he seems to be injured. Glad that Herd starts, I think he is better than Lichaj.

Please show some character and desire today, we need to win...

We should just play 4-3-3 and go for the jugular from the off. Get into an unassailable lead and take it from there.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Norwich City Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on October 27, 2012, 12:27:18 PM
I would have given Bent/ Benteke a shot. Gabby has not scored and still not threatened despite playing well last week, and his lack of goals in the league despite playing the vast majority of the last season up front is not good enough, and a large part of why we struggle so much. If Benteke is to be stuck with, which at his age he should as he shows promise long term, niether Gabby nor Bent are the solution alongside him for me.

Anyhow, strange selection all round for me, and Lambert still does not know his best team at all. Just hope we can get a goal up, a bit of confidence and see it through. We need a win, very, very badly.

For those who are asking what's Gabby done to be in the side, I expected him to play purely because of what he did to them in the same fixture last season. He was all over them in what must have been his best performance of the season.

It will be the same formation with the diamond and Albrighton/Herd providing the width on the right. PL likes to have one of Bannan or Albrighton in the side at any one time because they are the main set-piece takers. The Fulham game was a rare occasion where neither were used but I assumed that was because Benteke wasn't playing. We were awful on set pieces last week though.

I thought Albrighton played well in the first half against Albion and then he was awful until he got subbed. Wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened today. Interesting that there's no N'Zog though - the club's second biggest earner and he can't get on the bench? The biggest earner might not be able to get into the side but we haven't been playing to his strengths - hopefully we can evolve to a point where we can get him the supply he needs.

Agree that Lambert still does not know his best team yet. The various combinations in midfield turn out average, not bad but not breathtaking either. Albrighton owes a really good game, it would be a shame if all that early promise fades.

We could have had Van Persie and Aguerro up front last week but unless someone starts creating chances with accurate balls into and around the area, we won't score in a month of Sundays. The final pass was shocking last week

Agreed, must win game this.

Need the 3 points or we we find ourselves in that little group of teams struggling with relegation I think.

3-1 villa benteke 2 and KEA 20 harder, Hoilahan for them

I would like to see Westwood get some games at some point - of all the lower league ones signed, he was the one his fans rated the highest of all. Delph has been poor and must be on borrowed time if poor again today.

The top five earners - Given, Dunne, N'Zogbia, Bent and Ireland all benched (or injured). It's clear we need more seniority in the team; I'm worried Lambert is trusting youth and inexperience too much.

That's not totally the point though. Van Persie and Aguero help create chances as well as finish them. This idea - Bent's idea - that the striker is an isolated figure waiting for his teammates to serve him up ready cut-up, bitesize chances on silver platters. He needs to do his fair share not just hang around and wait for the glory.

We need more fucking bodies in midfield. We're still to hasty through the middle, and don't have enough options in the midfield. It's an obvious problem with a simple solution.

Yeah, I think it is a tactical point really. You see one of the two strikers hanging around uselessly on the edge of the area while the midfield struggles to find shorter options and ends up whacking it in the direction of the useless striker - and losing the ball. Solution? Three in midfield, ONE main striker.

We may as well just play 7-0-3 and whenever our defenders get the ball they can just twat it up to Benteke.

At least if we don't have a midfield, they can't go so far as actively making things worse, this lot are a liability.

Solid is one thing, but we need to keep the ball and create chances with possession. The way to do that is a form of three in midfield, almost any version would do, and play Ireland/Bannan/both.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Norwich City Match Thread
Post by: hilts_coolerking on October 27, 2012, 01:35:18 PM
In a crap game between two poor teams low on confidence I'd say Norwich have been more creative but haven't been able to finish, whereas we've looked pretty dismal except for Guzan and Benteke but have stuck away the one clear cut chance we made.

We've given the ball away so much it's untrue.  But what's most alarming is that the general quality of our players seems so low.

Our problem is that we've sold our best players and not replaced then.

The players we bought lately gave mostly been low-ish fee, low wages championship types.

Being forced down that road we have a pathetically weak squad. That is the fault of the witless chairman and his boy wonder sidekick, who seem to think this route will turn us into Ajax rather than an actual Championship side

As has been sited on here the midfield is lightweight.

I don't actually think playing Ireland and or Bannan would have changed much.

Lambert probably thought that with Delph, Ireland and CNZ we had enough quality because they looked good 2-3 years ago at other clubs. Add Bannan and Albrighton who looked very promising 2 years ago and he bought 3 others.

Fact is we have to play 5 in the middle of the park (not 4) and I am not sure what the best combo is.

If I am being really honest other than KEA and Holman I don't think any of the others are good enough and/or have the right attitude even for a bottom 6 team. Most of them have had more than enough chances over the last 18 months to prove otherwise and they haven't delivered!!

Well done to Guzan, Vlaar, Benteke and Herd today.
