They'll be on cloud nine after finally beating ManUre. If they're away in the Wafer on Thursday (haven't checked) they're likely not to bring their big guns so we'll find it difficult. 3-1.

Remember this fixture last season being one of only a handful of games I've watched us play where I've been embarrassed.  It was so utterly one sided and we were so devoid of any redeeming feature.

We are completely different kettle of fish now thankfully and I fancy us to get a draw.

I think we'll get a draw after twice taking the lead: 2-2 and it will seem like 2 pts dropped rather than a point gained.

Spurs did well to win at OT this weekend, buts it's not a good utd team this year. Our current form is ok too, so a draw for me.

Will be in a Sharm bar with 36 degrees heat so a 3-1 win will go down nicely.

Holman, Bent and Albrighton.

Very hard to predict a Villa side these days. I think I'd go:

Guzan - lichaj vlaar Clark Bennett - albrighton kea delph - Holman - bent gabby

Subs: given Lowton Westwood bannan n'zogbia weimann benteke

Lowton has looked shakier of late and lichaj might be better against bale. I'd be surprised if bent doesn't start. Holman looked good in the hole. Delph adds more steel than bannan.

We could play more of a narrow 4 in midfield: Holman kea delph bannan. But I think this might leave us more predictable and playing in very straight lines

Gonna be a tough game whatever. We used to have a great record against spurs but that's all changed in recent years. I remember 2separate  games where we went 2-0 down at whl, only to come back and win 5-2!

Have a horrible feeling we'll get battered.
I think we'll give it a right go, but their quality will come through, and although we'll be 'plucky' and 'determined' we will still be miles behind the big boys.

4-1 Spurs.
Title: Re: Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: N'ZMAV on October 03, 2012, 08:56:53 AM
I don't think we've been very convincing at the back, and our narrow midfield will not work against Spurs. Lennon and Bale will hammer us down the flanks if we don't give Lowton and Bennett any protection.

I think I'd go with this team.

Guzan

Lowton
Vlaar
Clark
Bennett

Albrighton
KEA
Delph
Holman

Bent
Agbonlahor

PL went there last year and beat them - quite convincingly as well IIR

As Damon said - at the very least we know we go there looking to win and give them a game - cannot ask anymore

Just a quick question - what are the chances of buying a single ticket on the day - i am in London with Missus to see my US cousin - but if they want to go "shopping" then i could slip off  ;)

I hope we stiffen up the defence a bit and sacrifice a striker for the extra bod in midfield.

A midfield 4 caused us a bit of a problem against Albion and the extra 1 up front didn't add much, it is probably too big a risk against this lot.

I'd also persevere with Benteke up front, with Bent coming on as the game demands.

Guzo
Lowton Vlaar Baker Lichaj
Albrighton, KEA, Herd, Holman
Delph
Benteke

Spurs 2 (Defoe, Bent og)
Villa 6 (Vlaar, Benteke 2, KEA, Bent, Defoe og)

any offers?

It felt like a defeat when they clawed their way back

Surprised to see a few people plump for albrighton in ther teams. I like him as he works hard but IMO he's struggled for a long time now and I don't think he's good enough to start for us. I think we've looked best this season with lowton providing the width on the right.  I think we'll go with a similar team to the newcastle and Swansea games but maybe Bennett and gabby coming in for lichaj and weimann/benteke.

On albrighton, I tend to agree. But with Ireland injured, I cant see past Holman for the 'in the hole position' an past albrighton on the right

If we played 4231 perhaps gabby and n'zogbia wide of Holman, but I don't think we will

With the way we are right now, plus Spurs perhaps a little full of it after the Utd result, I fancy us to get a result here. I think we'll take the lead and they'll have to scrape out a result.

Of course if they're on it, then they'll tear us apart, but I just fancy us to have a good game, and Spurs to not quite be at the races.

1-1
Bent.

Spurs are playing a very strong teak tonight. If we put in the sort of energetic display we saw at Newcastle or v Swansea I think we could get something

I think a 4231 could be suitable but that means no bent for me and I'd be really surprised if he did that.

I think n'zogbia in the hole might be a bit too adventurous for this one.

So I reckon bent for benteke the only change.

I watched the last quarter of an hour of the first half of their match last night.  They were streets ahead of the Greeks.  I thought they'd run up a big score 2nd half so didn't bother with it. 1- 1 it finished.

Conclusion, like us they run hot and cold.  The outcome of this one is very difficult to predict.

It should be pointed out that Spuds formation isn't as effective at home as it is primarily a counter attacking formation. Their best performances of the season have all been away. Even against Newcastle I though they played well and were the better team. So we have a chance as long as we cut out the silly errors. I'm gonna go for a 1-1 draw.

I think we're gonna dig in,and get a 2-2 draw.

PL may show the first signs of changing things around,as i think a narrow diamond formation will leave our full backs exposed to Bale and Lennon, plus we need to try and pin their full backs, back towards their goal. So maybe a 4-3-3,Albrighton and Holman on the right,Gab and Delph on the left.

Probably going to be the biggest test of the season for Bennet and Lowton. Think Lambert will play a 4-4-2 but mainly with Gabby behind Bent. Lambert will go to win and will change formation as he he see`s fit 1-1 Concrete Ron ...........

2-5 them to go 2 up then Little Brad to save a penalty and then we will run all over them like a virus.

"I honestly think we'll fucking smash these. They are Blues and have pretty much been outclassed every game this season. Saying that though, that makes me believe it will be a struggle and either be a score draw or we'll just scrape all 3 points.

Would be typical spurs though after beating Man Utd at Old Trafford, we'd go ahead and drop points at home to Aston fucking Villa."

"Outclassed every game this season"?  What kind of press do we get in that there London?

I'm getting fed up with turning in shit performances against these and am sick of their arrogance.

We all know that we could quite conceivably lose 3-0 or similar, I just don't think that we will- I think that we are in for a very pleasing surprise. 3-1 to Villa, and Holman to score one of ours. Just a feeling.

Its been our reputation in the press for the past couple of years and people now just presume we get out played every week without having a clue how our games have actually gone. I can't knock it though as its the same reason why I know that Spurs play the football of the gods and Gareth Bale is the best player ever ever.

The more the media talk like that, the more I fancy us to get a result.  I really hope they are expecting "Alex McLeish's Villa" to turn up...only for the real Villa to come along and give them a hiding.

I remember watching last year's turgid 2-0 defeat on a dodgy internet stream in Lisbon last November. Up until that night I was quite supportive of TSM and expected a top 10 finish.

That was one of the most embarrassing tactical line-ups I have ever seen as a villa fan. It was the beginning of the end for TSM.

So chins up everybody! Whatever happens tomorrow, and it could be a heavy defeat, at least we know we will 'give it a right good go'!

Haven't seen Camp Lawro's prediction posted yet so thought I might oblige (apologies if already done!). I think we can guess what he thinks anyway(bovvered...)

Tottenham v Aston Villa
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas can do no wrong at the moment but we have to temper the hype around him a little bit because Spurs got their backsides smacked in the last half-hour of their win at Old Trafford last weekend.

Manchester United made all sorts of chances, Tottenham retreated and United were unfortunate not to get one point and maybe even should have got all three.

Getting rid of their 23-year hoodoo at Old Trafford will give Spurs confidence but taking a strong team to Greece to play Panathinaikos in the Europa League on Thursday could count against them.

Villa striker Darren Bent knows he has to fight for his place

They have found their form in the Premier League and keeping it going should be their priority over a game where the result doesn't really matter because they can still get out of their group whatever happens. Why make things more difficult for yourself?

Aston Villa are having a bit of a quiet revolution under Paul Lambert and it is interesting to watch.

Lambert has not made a big deal out of his team selections, he has just said to the team 'play well and I am not bothered how old you are or how much Villa paid for you'.

Darren Bent, who was one of the casualties of that selection policy, proved a point when he came off the bench and scored his goal against West Brom on Sunday but, through Bent doing that, maybe Lambert has proved a point as well.

Villa are heading in the right direction but I cannot see them getting anything at White Hart Lane. Gareth Bale is in the sort of form where he can be unplayable and, even if some of their players are tired from their trip to Greece, Villas-Boas can change the direction of the game with the strength he has on his bench.

Prediction: 2-0

Have to say, that's actually a fair prediction from Lawro. It's fair enough to think we'll lose at Spurs, and he's reported the Bent thing as favourably to Lambert as it should be.

..............................Guzan.......................................
..Lihaj.........Vlaar...............Clark.....Bennett.............
...................El Ahmadi.....Delph...............................
..Agbonlahor....................................Holman............
...................Bent...... Benteke.................................

I would like Gabby to play on whichever side of the pitch that Bale is. Holman is comfortable on either side too but I think Gabby has the pace to deal with Bale going forward and could course Spurzz problems going forward when we have possesion. This I feel is Spurzzz weakest area. Holman I would like to play narrow to almost make up a central 3, with our width on the left coming from Bennett who looks good going forwards. I think it will be a tough game, and we have to accept Spurzzz will get a lot of the ball so Delph needs to enure he isn't reckless in his challenges.  My other change would be Lihaj, who I think has better postional sense than Lowton defensively. He'll also be a better threat in both penalty areas.

Be interesting to see if lambert reverts to 1 up top and adds an extra midfielder in there. If we can keep a clean sheet first half and then play on the break I think this may be our best approach. Having said that you could argue we should just go at them from the off.

Drop Lowton?  Seems harsh, I think he has established himself as a far more gifted player than Lichaj and would seem an automatic first choice for me.   I'd be suprised to see Bent, Benteke and Agbonlahor all start as it would diminish our options from the bench.  I think the only changes will be Bent for Agbonlahor and N'Zogbia for Albi.

For me he should go with 2 up front, and go for the win. Aside from beating Man Utd last week a few of my Spurs supporting mates reckon they have really struggled so far and are more than beatable today.

Attack is the best form of defence - spurs are good going forward but susceptible to conceding goals.

...Lowton.........Vlaar...............Clark.....Bennett.............
...................El Ahmadi.....Delph...............................
..Albrighton............................Holman............
...............................................................Gabby
.......................Bent......................................

I think Holman could tuck in and add a bit of graft to our central midfield allowing Gabby to use his pace down the channels with Bent as our out and out striker. Albrighton played very well last week so he should start.

We'd have a strong bench with Benteke, Bannan, N'Zogbia to come on if it wasn't working out.

My Aussie brother-in-law was over a few weeks back and wanted to take in a game, so we went to Spurs v Norwich. Norwich passed them off the park and the crowd were on their back from the first minute. It was only the arrival of Dembele at half-time that changed things and even then Norwich could have won it.

Keep Dembele quiet, pass through midfield and take our chances. We can do this, and I'll be in the upper tier to see it.

Keeping Bale and Lennon quiet is important so it might be an idea to play with two wide men ourselves to push them back and have them do a bit more defending than normal. We don't want Lowton having too much of a torrid time against Bale.

Despite their league position, Spurs aren't playing that well, they're still all fart, no shit. Show the same kind of effort and bravery as we did against Man City and we can pick something up.

1-2 Villa

I'd be happy with a goal or 2 and a draw with the steady progress continuing.

Anything against the arrogant, deluded and so f***ing detestable spurs fans is always worth it. Just because you play in London doesn't make you "big 4" just neighbours with Fulham, QPR and West Ham.
