I read an article on Guardiola's season and how he tried to out-Barcelona himself this year, his team pressing higher and higher up the pitch with more and more possession almost as if he knew the end was nigh and that he wanted to be remembered as managing the most beautiful team in the world and even though his reign was about to end he stuck to his principles.

When I saw that teamsheet I thought the same about Eck.  He's stuck to his principles to the end like the principled bag of shite he has shown himself to be.  Totally shocking, thank fuck the season is over.  Never been so pissed off since I've followed Villa.

Great result for us.

If you need to keep a defeat down to single figures, McLeish is certainly your man.

Elsewhere, two injury time goals deny ManU the title. Up yours Feruson.

If he's still at B6 next season, the ticket sales will hit a new low to go with a lowest number of home wins. If that doesn't attract the attention of Lerner & Co. nothing will.

If there's one thing you should realise looking at McLeish's last 3-4 seasons, it's that he's not a man who settles for a single failure. He'll crack on and do the job of taking us down properly next season, given the chance.

I'd settle for a repeat for those old enough to remember the weasel David Mellor losing his seat in Putney in 1997 and Sir James Goldsmith leading the chorus of

'OUT! OUT! OUT! OUT!'

just after the result was announced

Let's face facts there would be a long queue to lead the chorus

And add Hutton, CNZ and not know what to do with him. A negative and cowardly approach to the game, a constant refusal to try and win games, a doe-eyed affection for the "elite", a pig headed refusal to accept the inevitable, a disgraceful habit of blaming everybody else and denial of his own misgivings. And terrible results.

Well, the game was a microcosm of our season: shite! The set-up lacked guts, the players were lethargic, the defending comical at times. The substitutions were baffling (taking off Herd; not bringing on Carruthers; leaving Emule on) and the lack of vibrancy from McL and his sidekick indicates that he has got the bullet.

His record is simply awful: at the risk of repeating myself, here are the stark facts:
- Win ratio of 18.5% for the EPL season.
- Highest number of draws in the division: 33% more than the next team (Sunderland).
 - Lowest number of goals-scored in the bottom 6 clubs (and only surpassed by Stoke in the whole division).
- Worst record in the league for losing from winning positions – 22 points lost.
- Conceded more from set pieces than any other team.
- The only EPL team not to score from a corner all season.
- Villa's worst-ever league home record.
- VP crowds down by 9% this season.

Please share these facts with everyone as often as you can: the wider football world needs to know how bad things have been!

Other than that, thank God it's all over.

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish: "It was an absolutely shocking, woeful display. Maybe some of the boys were thinking about their holidays already.

"That team needs a change and there will be change. That wasn't an Alex McLeish team today. We need to bring more quality into the squad.

"I take (the fans' booing) on my shoulders for the sake of the players, I agree with the fans' frustration about our display.

"I'm expecting the board to back me. I have no reason to think I won't be (Villa manager next season). We've got through a really tough season. I've won lots of trophies as a player and manager and I haven't turned into a bad manager overnight."

Good to know Pablo. We were effectively a team just two games away from the drop last season, so to take the two best players away from that team was always going to be tough.

Utter tripe.

McLeish has officially the joint worst win record for a manager in the history of the club.  The stats speak for themselves

-worst home record ever
-the least points in the 20years since the game sold its soul
-less that a goal a game despite having one of the most potent strikers in the country for well over half of the season
-No goals from set pieces and conceded more from set pieces than any other side

Aside form the stats the constant blaming of the kids for his failings has driven me mad, as has the fawning over numerous teams during the season as if we should have been prepared for a kicking and not expected anything else, silly naive fans.

The best counter I can think of  to his comments today is 'but for minute against fulham I'd be the worst manager in the history of aston villa'.

Good that he's blamed the players again, and, in the same interview, suggested that he's taking the boos for them.  Not quite sure how that works.

hopefully our escape has scared the shit out of Randy!

I wouldn't bet on it.....ok McLeish is a poor manager, but who's decision was it to appoint him against the majority of fans wishes? - Lerner is useless and needs to sell up fast - he's been out of his depth since MON departed. He's not a self-made millionaire having aquired it from his father. He's just a mediocre businessman who's wrong for Villa. How many games has he been arsed to watch this season? Him and Faulkner are the core of our woes!

From the OS

Grant Holt and Simeon Jackson scored the goals which ensured victory for the home side on a sunny afternoon at Carrow Road.

The only crumb of comfort for the travelling troops - bedecked in fancy dress - was that were was no mega goal difference swing at the foot of the Barclays Premier League table, ensuring Villa stay a top-flight titan for another season, Bolton slipping through the relegation trapdoor.

It's worth pointing out that there's certainly no shame for Villa in losing to Paul Lambert's team, who have proved to be a slick and stylish side in their first season in the Barclays Premier League.

Norwich played like a team who wanted the season to run and run while Villa looked like a side who were desperate for it to end.

Villa really didn't get going in the first half, with Norwich taking control with their attractive brand of progressive football.

Norwich, on the crest of a wave after their impressive campaign, played with confidence and class.

Ironically, Villa did have the first chance of the opening 45 minutes, Stephen Ireland blasting wide from 25 yards out after meeting a corner clearance.

But after that, the Canaries soared and took the lead on nine minutes.

Grant Holt, who finds himself mentioned alongside Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Peter Crouch in contention for the Euro 2012 squad, did his chances no harm by bundling home Simon Lappin's free-kick from the left-hand side.

While Villa couldn't get to grips with things in the outfield, Shay Given was showing his shot-stopping skills in goal, however.

Given stretched to his right to keep out a 20-yard Johnny Howson blaster and then produced an even better stop to keep out a free-kick from Lappin.

That offered Villa some brief respite, but not for long.

Jackson doubled the lead on 22 minutes, finishing comfortably from close-range after an error from Carlos Cuellar.

The Spaniard misplaced a header, with the ball falling perfectly for the Norwich striker to stroke home.

Villa did go close late in the half, Eric Lichaj abandoning his defensive duties for a moment and going on a mazy run before firing goalwards.

John Ruddy managed to dive to his right to tip away the on-target effort.

Villa's forward momentum increased after the break, Alex McLeish's men coming out of the blocks fast.

Ruddy, in fine form in the Norwich goal, tipped away efforts from Ireland and Heskey in consecutive minutes in the opening exchanges of the second period.

In fact, both goalkeepers proved to be the main men after the break, with Given showing his undoubted class too.

Wes Hoolahan, Bennett and Jackson were all denied by brilliant stops from the Republic of Ireland ace as the final half of the season continued apace.

There were moments for Villa at the death, Ireland heading over from Gary Gardner's pinpoint cross and Barry Bannan blasting over from 30 yards out.

But the visitors couldn't bag that vital goal which would have made the nerve-ends tingle for the home side in the closing moments.

Despite the loss, there was a lovely moment after the final whistle, with Cuellar donning a wig, his national flag and throwing home shirts into the away end for his adoring masses.

Norwich: Ruddy, Martin, Naughton, Bennett, Johnson, Hoolahan, Bennett, Lappin, Howson (Crofts), Holt (Morison), Jackson (Wilbraham). Subs: Steer, Drury, Surman, Fox.

Villa: Given, Cuellar (Gardner), Collins, Dunne, Lichaj, Herd (Bannan), Clark, Warnock (Baker), Ireland, Heskey, Agbonlahor. Subs: Guzan, Carruthers, N'Zogbia, Delfouneso.

How bad does someone have to be to play such a team devoid of any attacking threat? Warnock, Herd and Clark in midfield. Cueller as fullback. Lichaj playing on the left, which he doesn't look right at (he's not good enough any how). Heskey up front is pretty much a defensive choice too.
Worse still, 81 minutes, we have Carruthers and N'Zogbia on the bench who could come on to provide width. What does he do? Bring on Baker!! That's one of the most moronic decisions in the history of football. The games pretty much lost. Why make a defensive change to sure things up???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The blokes a waste of fucking oxygen. I wouldn't wish him on the shittest pub team on earth, because he'd make them even worse.

it's bad, yes. Houllier didn't do much better with Young and Downing, that's all I'm trying to say.

This is the same nonesense spouted by Ron Toss last week.  The argument is totally flawed.

AMc inherited a squad that with was a top 6 side based on form in the second half of the season after the acquisition of Bent.  Yes, Young and Downing were then sold but he did reinvest getting on for 18m on their replacement.

Avoiding relegation by the barest of margins is another abject failure from the master of abject failures.

There simply is no defence form his performance.

Really really poor. Last game of the season, literally nothing to play for - and he starts with two players confirmed to be leaving in the summer. Could/should have gone with Lichaj in at RB, maybe given Baker a game at LB. N'Zogbia starting and maybe even a first start for Carruthers - why not?

But then this manager has no vision, none at all. He's verging on totally incompetent.

Thank god that utterly miserable season is over, didnt watch or follow the game today I was to wrapped up with events at the etihad, as others have mentioned if there had been one more game to play this season we would have almost certainly have gone down, if Mcshit stays we will probably finish bottom next season, Randy give us some hope and restore our faith in you a little bit by loading that fuckin bullet.

We were shit under Houllier last season but fair play to McLeish he has managed to take us down several levels in only a matter of months

Outclassed by an average Norwich side, seven defenders in the starting eleven and a complete lack of tactical nous or ambition shown in 90 minutes just about rounded off our season perfectly

Absolute dog shit

Its a funny old game. Mcleish should obviously be sacked. But Mancini was only one minute away from winning as much as the villa, and surely after spending that much he would have been sacked aswell. A minute later and he's top of the world. nuts

Was he daring the club to sack him I wonder?

Exactly!

After Bolton it was "I'm not thinking about the end of the season, I just want to make sure we've stayed up."

Now that he HAS thought about it, he knows that if the club want to sack him, they've got to pay off his contract at £5m.  All of his interviews of the last few days have basically been saying "if you want me out, you have to sack me!" whereas post-Bolton, I imagine that Lerner was hoping that McLeish would agree his position was untenable, and settle for a bit less.

It is scary to read the post match comments and hearing the excuses coming out, he is blaming anyone but himself while harping on about his history of winning trophies. A word in your ear Alex, you have had a season working, training and instructing these players, you are useless so do the right thing and walk.

Well just got back to Manchester after a 7 hour round trip and I remember why I stopped going to away games about 3 months ago.  Fucking useless, don't forget to clear your desk Alex.  As for the players, disgraceful.

I love it when Hansen says that McLeish just wants the season to end and start again. Yes, so do we Alan just with Alex miles and miles away from B6 with any other team but us.

Aside from Hutton, every Villa player used this season has shown that they are capable of producing great football, either individually or as part of a team. However, they stopped wanting to play together even before McLeish arrived because of a lack of respect for the manager. Get in a boss that gives them a philosophy and a pride in each other and they could show that kind of form again. Look at Albrighton and N'Zogbia. They should be indispensable. Instead, they're terrible.

Mmmm so just got back from Norwich. Good following, lots of 'faces' from the past who it was nice to see again. Mind you had the game mattered those boys would have been a little bit less in the party mood than they were.

I haven't been aggressively anti McLeish, in fact I've felt a little bit sorry for him in so much as I feel he's been hung out to dry a little bit by Lerners austerity measures......but he has to go now. He's lost the away crowd..... No one wants him and it will be impossible for the club to function with him in charge. Bluntly if that performance is the best he can  do with a safe and relaxed squad then he must go. They showed no commitment, no passion, no game plan, no bloody respect for several thousand who made the effort to go.

I will renew, whatever happens in the summer: the Villa is ours. Don't push it though Randy.

Not long got back. I can't remember the last time i saw a Villa side as dire as that, we were absolutley shocking. We looked so poor it was embarrasing to watch at times. If he gets given another season i'll be amazed.

Superb day in Great Yarmouth on saturday though, there were Villa wherever you went.

Can somebody please clarify is it not possible for the club to just put him on gardening leave thus only having to pay him monthly until such time as he finds another job, and saving having to pay out any lump sum contract payment that would be due if the club decided to sack him.  If he chooses to stay out of work for the remainder of his contract time then so be it the club have to swallow that.  Mind you I would have thought interest earned by Mr Lerner on all of his money would easily cover that.  Equally why is it not possible to take him down the competency route, demonstrate that he has failed to fulfil the competences contained in his role profile and thus be able to safely terminate his employment on such grounds without recourse?

I'd have thought that almost certainly you'd be hit with a constructive dismissal claim on either count.

It simple, Randy just needs to pull the trigger and we'll just have to wear the cost.  His stupid appointment caused this in the first place.  No dithering, just do it FFS.

Fair point. None of us knows exactly what the "competences contained in his role" were, but you would think they'd be some sort of get-out, at least in terms of compensation, if he cocked it up to this extent. Maybe it really was just about not getting relegated, but that's a risky strategy (as we've seen) and defensive damage limitation on this scale has surely lost Lerner more than a few pennies.

If we had of got relegated no doubt he had a clause in his contract where he could be dismissed.

Staying up probably has guaranteed him £2m in terms of pay-offs when he is sacked... no wonder he was concentrating on that...

By the way, I've decided I don't want to see James Collins play in a Villa shirt ever again after seeing some of the Norwich game. What a mindless couple of minutes he had - first blasting the ball into Grant Holt's nuts from two yards away at a free-kick, and then bulldozing into one of their players to give away a needless free-kick - which Norwich then opened the scoring from.

Such indiscipline from a senior central defender. We need to do better than the likes of him.
