Title: Norwich City v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Legion on May 07, 2012, 06:13:58 PM
Well we're safe now barring a cataclysmic set of results. So I'm sure we'll end the season on a high with free-flowing, out-and-out attacking football and try to put a shed-load past the Canaries with our inspirational manager.

0-0 it is then.

Norwich 6 Villa 0. Cue much filling of shreddies as Bolton score their 10th in the 92nd minute.

Or maybe it will be a 1-1 draw.

Norwich to romp home with a 6-0 drubbing whilst Bolton record a record victory over Stoke - 10-0, but we survive by just the one goal.

Seriously - I`ll go with a highly entertaining 3-3 or 4-4 with McLeish being supported by the board and owner for next season - thought turns my stomach.

Looking forward to this one now we're safe and the Saturday night in Great Yarmouth can be enjoyed a bit more without fretting about us going down.

I'd give Carruthers a start in place of N'Zogbia and maybe give Guzan a game before he possibly leaves us.

I'd like to think we could play with a bit more freedom now and give a couple of the younger players a go. It would be good to see Clark at centre back and perhaps give Gardner a go. Is the Fonz our only fit forward?

Guzan - cuellar, dunne, Clark, lichaj - carruthers, Gardner, herd, warnock - Ireland - gabby / heskey / Fonz

I'd love to go along with a score like that, but we rarely create 3 or 4 chances.
I've a feeling AMcL will be given until Christmas. I think Randy owes him that after dealing him such a bum hand to start with.
I still feel that he deserves a crack at building his own team, not be using players who are past there use by date from other managers.
However, I think his position has become untenable.

There is no way that Eck will give the reserves a run when we could still miraculously let that goal difference slip.

And that sums up how he thinks that fear and not attack is the best form of defence. Glad we're safe, but even the way we did it was DULL: 0-0, 1-2, 0-0, 1-1...

Rest Dunne and Given for euros (they deserve it as they have been key last two games)

Last time i was in Gt Yarmouth was about 1992 and from memory it was ok. Besides it can't be any worse than Blackpool. Sounds like there's going to be a few Villa there so it should be good.

I think with the pressure off we'll win this 3-1, we'll stand around at the end wondering why we have'nt played that well all season, then hope that Randy has'nt fell for one good performance and keeps Mcleish on.

Hard to predict as it matters little to either side - typical end of season nothing game.  I don't think we'll win and Lambert may consider this a job interview and want to hammer us, but I went for a draw as that's pretty much what we do this season.

I know that we like to think Villa are a traditional club but things have been taken too far this season.
All of the 7 league wins have been Saturday 3.00 p.m. kick offs.  Therefore will have to settle for a draw at best on Sunday.

Another excuse the manager could use - blame Sky + ESPN

If we don't win, we will be only the second side (since Sky invented the game) to avoid the drop by winning less than 8 games. The only side at present to have done that was the Bitter Birds who won 6.

Christ. I've only just realised we only won 7 games all season.

Fucking hell.

That Norwich fan got it wrong we never sent them down they were already gone by the time we played them on the last day.  A point was enough to keep us up but it was irrelevant as Palace lost at Newcastle.

Even "better" - if we lose and score one goal, it'll be played 38, scored 38, points 38. I reckon next year McLeish will aim for his perfect P38 W0 D38 L0 F0 A0 P38...

Not overly fussed tbh.

A win might help to paper over the obvious cracks and just provide those dullards in the Boardroom some pitiful evidence to keep things as they are and I never want to see us lose.

In that case we should finally kill off the season in the style that we've participated all year.

An uninspiring 1-1.

Norwich City v Aston Villa (Stats from SkySports)

Aston Villa have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the top flight this season (22).

Aston Villa have won just one of their last 15 Premier League games and none of the last nine.

Villa have won three, drawn four and lost none of their last seven games against Norwich.

The Canaries have gone 13 Premier League games without a clean sheet and conceded 14 goals in their last four matches.

Norwich have scored the joint-most headers in the top flight this season (15), while Villa have netted the fewest (3).

Villa have won just one of their 10 away games on the final day of a Premier League season (3-1 at Chelsea in 2002).

If Aston Villa fail to win then they will equal their all-time record of only 7 wins in a season (set in 12-team divisions in 1889-90 & 1890-91).

Norwich have the best cross completion rate in the Premier League this season (25%).

The Canaries have seen their woodwork struck 25 times this season, the most of all teams.

Villa are the only Premier League side yet to score from a corner situation this term

Well we're safe now barring a cataclysmic set of results. So I'm sure we'll end the season on a high with free-flowing, out-and-out attacking football and try to put a shed-load past the Canaries with our inspirational manager.

0-0 it is then.

Agree with the sentiment but not the result, I think we will play with gay abandon and lose 2 - 1

Quote from: Barry Bannan
Barry Bannan has called for Villa to play with a licence to thrill against Norwich.

Bannan admits the pressure has been on Villa over the past few weeks, with relegation issues concerning everyone of claret and blue persuasion.

But he thinks Villa can now express themselves, with their top-flight status all but secured barring a mathematical miracle.

The diminutive midfield ace wants Villa to show their superlative skills and send the fans home happy for the summer holidays.

He said: "Hopefully the lack of pressure will help us against Norwich.

"If you look at the position we were in the last couple of games, there was a lot of pressure on the shoulders of the players and maybe they were playing a bit safer than they normally would or would have liked to have played.

"We're looking forward to the game now and with the pressure off knowing we can't go down I think you'll see that in our performance.

"I think there will be a lot more confidence out there on the pitch and hopefully that can lead to the victory.

"We'd love to do the double over Norwich this season. I was at the game earlier in the term at Villa Park and I can remember it well.

"We played great that day. I remember Gabby was on fire. Obviously we could do the double over them. That would be fantastic.

"It's the last game of the season and we can hopefully send the fans home and into their holidays happy."

Bannan knows that will be no easy task, given the way the Canaries have soared in the Barclays Premier League this term.

He added: "They've done very well. Obviously with the new teams coming up, you tend to think they're going to be struggling to stay up.

"But they've been safe for a while now. They've got a good manager. He's done very well since he's been there.

"He's brought through a lot of lower league players and they've established themselves pretty well in the Premier League so they've had a great season.

"I would say the pressure being off has helped them. There's a lot of pressure on us because we're a massive club.

"We're expected to be doing well every season in the top half at least. But with clubs that are coming up, newly promoted clubs, there's no real pressure on them.

"If they lose then the fans would probably expect that and if they win it's a bonus. So they're going out there just playing with no pressure and that can help in games sometimes."

What the f*ck is that chump talking about? I'd love to see the articles where he warned the press last summer how difficult the season was going to be.
So the Norwich squad must be another one which is stronger than ours. Despite most of the players only being good enough for the Championship until Lambert knocked them into shape. I suspect that he kept referring to the Norwich squad being together for a long time as a plea for him to be given at least another season here! No chance you twazzer.

There's no need for us to play more than one of Warnock, Herd or Clark in midfield (never mind the dreary liklihood he'll play all fucking three). I'd like to see us be adventurous. If it means putting another kid in, like Carruthers, then so be it. Lets have some attackers in midfield. Get Bannan or Gardner in there too, or both. At least try to play for the fucking win. Lets at least try to break 40 points and also, if we finish above Wigan, it's a little bit extra cash.

Do I expect us to be adventurous? No.
