Teams announced yet? This is going to be the most unexperienced side we've fielded in a long time. I've no doubt the players will give their all for Stan in this but with Chelsea finally showing form I fear for us today.

Put it up to them and have no fear, lads.

I'd rather trust the kids to show no fear than the experienced players at the club. Not much point of experience if it's taught you bad habits. 'Mon the Villa wains!

Edit: now that's a team! As long as the players don't keep their shape too rigidly with the ball and move off it, that's more a team I'd like to see.

No real width, but Albrighton has been poor of late, wonder if Weimann will be up with Gabby wide. Think it is going to be a really tough ask today, reminds me of the side against United which was so bare through injury. No Cuellar is worrying?

12 Villa academy players out of a squad of 18. In a season which has been shit and seems to be getting shitter, that is at least one reason to be pleased, whatever the result today.

Just give it your best shot boys, that's all you can do. Up and at them and we might just give them a shock.

I (almost!) don't care about the result today. All I know is that, with the academy being so strongly represented and our ill captain watching on and being cheered from all sides of the ground, I am very likely to end the day very proud indeed of my club, regardless of the result.

Watching sportsnetworld here in Vancouver, just showed Stan all suited up, Villa tie on, big smile as usual, shaking hands with everyone inside the tunnel. What a top bloke!
Showed Torres running on the pitch with 19 Petrov on back of his shirt.

Very relaxed about this. Happy that McLeish has gone with a young attacking line up. A lot of kids who will be looking to make an impression. Daunting, yes. But their passion can make up for that.

Nice to see the ground looking fuller than it has in recent weeks. It is a wonderful place when it is rocking.

Don't you feel a much greater inclination to get behind a line up like this too, I certainly do! We ought to stick with these kids, something to define us and cling onto at last instead of the same old same old

Or potentially one of the worst Villa sides ever to represent us in the Prem.  Lacking in experience and under the guidance of Alex McLeish.  I fear a thumping.

Chelsea's movement is that of a Champions League team.

Added to this we have the bench of a youth team we're in a totally different league to them. Losing games to teams like Chelsea isn't going to get us relegated.

The young players are active, mobile, willing and technically gifted. They're wasted by the wrong-headed strategy of - thumping it to Weimann (!?) in a 4-4-2. Gardner should not be wide, it's a joke. Bannan should not be so restricted. They're being held-back by poor strategy and rigid uselessness of system, and by the useless, brainless thumping of the 'senior pros'.

But today's not about the football. I can't wait to hear that roar at 19.

I think there's some real positives to take from this, our movement and 1 touch passing has been much better, just a shame that we seem tied to 2 banks of 4 in defence and midfield.

I know they were given a fucking free kick! does that make the decision correct? - no.
Technically, I believe he was onside.
Just as I believe that technically Sturridge was offside for the Chelsea goal (as was either Lampard or Mata; couldn't tell which one it was).

But it's academic really since GA missed and Chelsea's goal was awarded.

Well, you can see why bother sides are where they are.  Chelsea aren't the impenetrable fortress they were under Mourinho but still have quality going forward.

We are a rag tag shambles at the back at times and we don't have enough quality going forward.

Both sides lack confidence and the team who score the next goal will win the match.

Collins should stay at the back for all of our future corners.  The mans head is for clutching only.

We've done okay. The kids are trying to get it down and play which is good. Collins and Warnock have tried to force it long from the back a few times which has been disappointing but expected.

I like Lichaj, he's looked decent and his throws are a threat too. Have him over Hutton any day.
Warnocks been okay. Baker looks a little uncertain but he's made some good blocks. We just miss Carlos.
Why can't Collins head a bloody ball properly in the opposition box? Annoying.

Gabby's been okay. Weimann is struggling to get in the game. I'd be tempted to sacrifice him for another midfielder, maybe a wide man.
Bannan is forcing the play a bit too much sometimes. He's tried a couple of Hollywoods when a simple pass and keeping it would be better.
Ireland excellent.
Gardners been decent as well but is better in the middle. I'd be tempted through Barry on the left and Gardner on the right unles we bring on a wideman.

However, most importantly, we're putting the work in. Stan will be proud.

I thought Ireland was great first half. Everything good we did seemed to come through him at some point. I was impressed to see some good patient passing, but no real penetration I guess. After they scored we didn't cave in as I thought we might do, so fair play. Hopefully we can have a right go at them second half.

Come on Villa.

We have done ok. I though Gabby has been a little wasteful so far, but has the beating of Terry and Cahill for pace, and Bannan and Ireland are both passing well enough for him to keep getting chances to get in behind.

Need to get a goal back and see if we can build, but the shape looks ok for such a cobbled side.

No the corner Cech was diving away from, Gabby's left. Look, I realise a lot of people have jumped to his defence and I don't mean to appear too harsh. But it's what differentiates the good and great strikers. Yes, he has a number of other good traits in his game, but Gabby is the former for reason. The shot was low and in the middle which will give a good keeper a chance every time.

Both Gardner and Bannan should be central, or at least, in Bannan's case, not treated as a winger. He doesn't have the pace to skin a full back down the flank, sometimes the short ball isn't on so he tries the Hollywood, which isn't working. Gardner is wasted out there, and we're being overrun centrally.

Ah bollocks.

Let's face it we can blame McLeish for a lot of things but as for swapping it now? I doubt that would make much difference, Lerner has fucked Villa over this season and unfortunately for him we weren't lucky enough to go all season without an injury.

What's concerning as a club is that there have been too many games like this where the opposition haven't even been tested. This week and last are examples where we haven't had enough of anything to trouble the other team. That is when relegation happens.

the signing of Holman and hopefully others of that ilk will help. I love Gabby but he's not the answer up front. He's very one dimensional, and if you are going to be one dimensional, you need to be Darren Bent in front of goal.

I still think that a big part of our problems is tactical, Bannan and Gardner have looked out of position, with the team he had we should've played Herd deeper and had 3 in the middle and pushed Lichaj and Warnock to provide width but because McLeish doesn't let the fullbacks break forward we can't do that.

Even when he changes it to give us a genuine wideman he puts him on the side where he's going to have to cut back or inside.

I genuinely think there's enough talent in the 11 that started today to have done much better but the naive tactics have screwed us.

The real area of concern for me is that we struggle to score goals and the body language is poor and oozes lack of spirit. If we can't score and can't fight then we are in trouble.

And Collins goes and scores.

We look every inch a team bound for the championship to me.  I don't know that's too appropriate to say today but it's true.

I agree, would it be such a bad thing? The only half decent player we'd lose is Bent. Every other star player has left us in the last four successive seasons.....

In football terms it would potentially be a disaster.  For every 'Newcastle' there are 5 'Sheffield Wednesdays / Notts Forests'.

Well unfortunately the owner only has himself to blame, clearly doesn't have a clue and completely out of his depth. Being a nice bloke isn't grounds for being an owner of a football club........

Well done James! Finally got one on target!

We look lost on ideas though and poorly organised. Our youthful vizz early in the match has worn off and where normally some gameplay might then take over, we of course don't have one.

We do seriously need to get 4-5 quality players in the summer and ideally a new manager. McLeish is like a pair of concrete slabs on our feet, dragging us down.

It's all a bit toothless and poor. We really, really miss Sir Stan too.

Of course he won't he'll probably blame the players like he has for the last 5-6 matches.

The ref does need to be called out though, there 2nd was blatent and giving a free kick to Terry just before their 3rd was worse.
