0-1 to QPR.

Our confidence will be on the floor after today. Also, we generally tend to lose if I predict us to win!

On MOTD last night Colin Wanker said this is a winnable game for QPR. Can't see it myself, even with their change of manager. 3-1 to us, with Barton getting sent off for them

2-1 win for us. Think we'll win from a goal down aswell.

About time we won at VP anyway especially with Man. City the game after this one.

Too hard to call! We could either come back hurting after today and royally rip them a new one (optimistic view) or do our usual home game thing and not really give a shit either way and lose (pessimistic view), therefore I'll say a draw (realistic view?).

From a historical perspective I can't remember QPR winning (at VP) too often in the League. There was the year of the Mcmahon missed pen (1-2) but other than that I'm sure we've mostly had the upper hand (apart from the league cup a couple of years ago). Don't think Hughes has been overly successful here as a manager either with Man City or Fulham. At least we seem to be scoring goals again. I think they will come for a point and get it. 1-1 for me.

'i remember a trevor lucifer Francis Hatrick when he was nearly 40 down there ' - aaargh - my eyes ! my eyes ! Oh yeah Villa Mole - take back everything I said then. Having said that, it must also be said that God might have been seeing three of him (TF) that day and just marked the wrong one. I seem to remember us putting together a pretty good run after that including a 1-0 win on Luton's plastic pitch and playing most of the season with three centre halfs. Happy times GT mkI.

Tough one, but I reckon 2-1 Villa, Bent and Keane for us and some bloke I don't know for them.

I think there will be a reaction, Keane adds a lot to us going forward in terms of awareness and craft (I am shocked about just how much to be fair) and it will help us break through and nick a couple of goals.

There is no way our back 4 can be as bad as Sunday again. No way. Please......

(It is going to be horrible isn't it!)

Another home match that we should win - so clearly we won't. QPR will probably sneak a narrow win in front of our lowest PL gate for 10 years. AM will blame the ref and will not resign the next day. Faulkner will pledge RL's support for AM but depressingly he'll mean it.

Apart from that it will be a brilliant night!!

AMcL needs a thumping win here so we can start dreaming of rising up the table to offset the disappointment of being out of the Cup.

Should we lose this one, it could be shaping up as a pretty bleak end of season.

I think the best we can hope for is a draw but I think the reality will be a home loss due to the hangover from Sunday's second half.

Crowd will be the lowest for a league game in years - under 27K.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Q.P.R. Pre-Match Thread
Post by: luke25 on January 30, 2012, 08:17:59 PM
7 minutes- Stephen Ireland picks up the ball some 40 yards from goal and plays a delightful ball through to Bent, who manages to beat the off side trap, his first time shot is kept out by a fantastic reflex save by Paddy Kenny only for the ball to fall to the waiting Gabriel Agbonlahor to put the ball into an empty net. ASTON VILLA 1-0 QPR

88 minutes- Jay Bothroyd  shields the ball on the by line just in side the Villa area, Warnock keeps a few yards back as Bothroyd desperately tries to turn and attack the Villa goal, Warnock keeps his distance and there is no immediate danger to Villa, mean while on the penalty spot Richard Dunne starts brushing his right foot along the ground repeatedly as if he's pretending to be a bull, he then positions his head down with shoulders arched up and rapidly runs towards Bothroyd, just before he gets to the QPR front man his whole body leaves the ground and he ends up flattening Bothroyd, the referee points straight to the spot. Helguson steps up and lazily rolls the ball into the corner as Shay Given falls the wrong way. ASTON VILLA 1-1 QPR.

90+3 minutes- Aston Villa have a free kick just to the left of the Rangers D, second half substitute Bannan strokes the ball directly into the arms of Paddy Kenny and thats the last of the additional 3 minutes up, Kenny hoofs the ball up field and over the front mens heads, as the ball bounces the Villa keeper calls that he has it, he jumps to claim it but then inexplicably from the left Stephen Warnock dives in to head it clear, both men collide in to each other and the ball bounces behind them, Alan Hutton spotting the danger runs back and jumps over the two men in order to clear the ball but at the same time Warnock has tried to get himself up off the deck, Huttons trailing leg hits Warnocks head and he too falls down with the ball hitting his head and trickling over the line. ASTON VILLA 1-2 QPR

Would bring Collins back in, not sure why he was dropped after his best performance of the season against Wolves.

For the last year the same sentence could have been said about Kweller last season. Collins completely misreading the header for Wolves' second goal was hilariously bad. But Carlos was disappointing at the Library on Sunday so I don't mind who plays. Both and Dunne would all be dropped ideally.

And QPR?seriously?since when have they been any good? Funnily enough, the last time I was in England and able to get myself over to see the Villa was in September 2008....I took a Leeds supporting mate to the Carling Cup game before leaving the country...a few weeks before we had given city a tonking in the first game of the season. Sadly, we lost 1-0 to QPR. But in all fairness, they are a bit shit. We are not in the greatest of form at home, but I feel we beat them 3-1

So QPR will arrive bouyed by a clutch of new signings and their nearly new manager. Villa on the other hand still banging on about reducing wages and a manager making out a stray elbow was the reason we lost against the Arse. I can easily see another red card for Hutton and Collins/Dunne crashing into players like a bumper car at the back. 2-2 is the best I can see.

Yes.. Carruthes in the squad just seen his tweet. He is overjoyed! This is all I want for the rest of the season. We know were going nowhere till these over paid over rated parasites are off the wage bill. Bring on the kids!

I completely agree. From the moment Bannan used his first piece of possession to ping a beauty through to Ireland the kids made us look a different outfit on Sunday. They didn't have enough time to make a profound impact, but we looked better and sharper. Much as I like people like Petrov, their time as a first team regular must surely be coming to an end, and the kids have got to step up if we're going to be more exciting as a team. Not more successful, necessarily, just more exciting.

Not feeling too optimistic on this one. I reckon a low key draw

I'm not sure petrov and Clark is well suited to these sorts of home games. A brave option would be to pair Ireland with one of them, and presumably gabby and cnz wide. I don't think we're good enough to do that though.

Gardner would add more energy and ball winning ability. That would mean Ireland wide again and presumably gabby over cnz.

Would ideally want to get cnz in the side but I'd probably leave him as a sub.

So I reckon

Given - Hutton, dunne, Clark, warnock - petrov, Gardner - Ireland, keane, gabby - bent

Guzan, cuellar, baker, bannan, cnz, heskey, weimann

If they (QPR)  turn in an OK ish 6 or 7/10 performance and defend reasonably well, I think they'll win.

But them having a load of new signings on the books can go one of two ways, they might be buzzing and looking to make an impression.  Or they might struggle to gel and find cohesion.

In which case, both defences might be as bad as each other and we might see a high scoring draw.

Don't think we will though.

0-1 to them, shades of Man Citeh at home in DOL's last season.

I think it is really tough for McLeish to get the balance of our side right in fairness to him, mainly due to having the previous regimes crap and then the Houllier buys which as good as they were, were not fitting to his style.

But there are fundamentals which sit in place. Given, Dunne, Petrov, Bent basically run through the core of the side. For me, home against a side who will defend well, Keane is a must having seen him play twice now. He looks up, finds space and leads well. I wish he was here longer.

So Keane plays. Then it is filling in around them, and for many positions it is either a case of shoe-horning square pegs into round holes, or upsetting fans favourites, or both. And it is a really tough thing to get right. At home, we have to get on the front foot though.

My side would be

Given

Hutton (until Lichaj is ready to play games)
Cuellar
Dunne
NZogbia

Petrov
Clark
Ireland
Keane
Gardner

Bent

The three behind Bent can interchange between being wide without the ball and coming narrow with it, but the idea is that Hutton and NZogbia would give you a lot of attacking width from full back.

Worth a punt, we have lost how many at home.

that the issue, no matter what way McLeish tried to configure the midfield we are still going to be unbalanced. Defo would give Nzogbia a shot left back but more than a good chance he will sulk if he is put there. He did well as a wing back at Newcastle a few years back.

Clark has to be in the middle. Keane and Bent are certainties. But Ireland is at his best where Keane plays. You simply cant play Ireland centrally in a 2 man midfield nor Gardner.

Id try something like this but again good chance we will have no width. Could see us keeping the ball well though.

--------------Given
Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Nzogbia
----------------Clark---------------
------Petrov------------Gardner------
-------Keane-----Ireland
---------------Bent-------------

Anyone know why all of the other games tomorrow kick-off at 8pm and ours doesn't? Or why there's always a couple of midweek non-tv games that kick-off at 8 and not at the usual 7.45? But never a Villa game. Do you have to play sexy football to start later or what?

Games always used to kick off at 7.30 (except in London, which was 7.45), then post-Hillsborough 15 minutes later became the norm. Now it's either 7.45 or eight, depending on preference, I suppose in the way some clubs play on Tuesday and some Wednesday.

If Albrighton was fit tommorrow, I'd have left Gabby out for this one but think he'll play so it will probably be the same team as Sunday (although I have a hunch Gardner might start).

Surprised QPR are signing all these strikers, their central defensive options don't look that great to me....Fitz Hall, Clint Hill, Ferdinand, Gabbidon/ Suppose Onouha will probably play there.

Main worry is SWP will have his annual field play against us by simply just running at Warnock whenever he gets a chance.

2-1 Villa, Bent and Bannan.

What annoys me more is the fact that there's no highlights of tonight's games on the Beeb. Five games last night, another five tonight, but they ran MOTD last night because the top 5 teams were playing, rather than run it tonight to show all 10 games. Almost as bad as ITV. Looks like AVTV or Leeg link after I've thawed out tonight

Can't see how we are not going to win this tonight, QPR and Wolves have to be a couple of the easier sides to take 3 points from and at home, they may have a new manager and they may have made a couple of new signings, even so, I think our lads will want to prove a point tonight, don't think for a minute they will be all despondent and down after the weekend, think we will put in one of the best performances this season tonight.

If we go two goals up again please keep bent out of defence. I watched the Arse game from the 'Clock End' and was in shock at the way we disintegrated under pressure. Keane and Bent work very well together ably assisted by Gabby and can take any defence apart; as long as they get the ball passed to them.  Backpassing to Given to hoof up the pitch in the hope of getting to the forwards is so laughable it is almost pathetic.
We can win tonight if the dustbins like Warnock get stuck in and, perhaps, even move around.
I was ecstatic during up to a few mins into the 2nd half. What were we doing attacking at that stage? Total confusion reigned and we were done for! Please not again! If I can, then the opposition can also see our gaping flaws. I just hope we learnt something from Sunday's game!

Yes, there is little confidence in playing at home or keeping hold of a lead or keeping a clean sheet at the moment but they have to get over it at some point and I think we'll nick this by a goal so... 2 - 1.

After both sides got knocked-out of the cup at the weekend it would have made sense to switch this game to the next cup weekend when both teams will be now idle. The club would have made more money and it would have suited both sets of fans better too. I guess there wasn’t enough turn-around time to organise it after we got dumped out of the cup on Sunday.
