Available Saturday evening.
-
Thank fuck for that.
-
Well thank fuck for that. Overall very poor against a very poor Wolves side, but we won. Great goals from Keane and Bent's movement was good. Gardner getting a start was nice. Defence bloody terrifying.
-
What a game. Best I've seen in a long long time. Everyone played their part, and 2 incredible strikes from keane. Justification for the signing in this alone.
-
Well, it certainly wasn't boring!
-
Dancing a little jig!
Looking forward to Monday morning in Darlaston now...
-
That's a good comeback from the dreadful first half performance. Well done Villa.
-
Fuck me that was stressful and I wasn't even watching a stream. defence still seems prone to far too many mistakes, but well done for coming back and picking up the 3 points.
And well done Robbie, always said he was a great bit of business!
-
Cracking winner by Keane. Wonder if we'd have won if Frimpong hadn't gone off.
-
We got it badly wrong tactically in the first half but seemed much better in the second with Clark in midfield. Keane's legs have gone but he's still got his skills.
-
I thought we played some really good stuff in the second half. First half was poor though, admittedly.
-
Most entertaining match we've had all season. Even if we'd drawn, I wouldn't have necessarily been disappointed after that display. More of that, more of the youngsters especially Gardner, more of Keane, less of Petrov, and I'll be happy with that thanks.
-
Great... er, and what is it called again? Oh, yeah... entertainment.
-
Never in doubt.
-
Phew, feared the worst when we went in 2-1 down at half time. Gives us a bit of breathing space...
Makes such a big difference to my Saturday evening when we win!
-
actually quite enjoyed that. proper game of football. shocking 1st half from us. only person who would have enjoyed that was warnock. much better 2nd half. have we stumbled upon a tactic, take out the opposition midfield and pounce?
-
Thank you Keano. Two great goals, second was sublime. Gardner played very well.. Clark proved to me he isn't a left back. He's a midfielder. Great when he moved into midfield.
Not a great performance by any means, but a good win.
-
Fair play Robbie, that will likely be worth at least one place in the table meaning he's about paid-off the investment in him already.
-
Good game but need to be more clinical especially if the opposition in the last 10 play with one defender, we should of been home and dry.
-
Only saw the last 15. Red card presumably crucial?
They said Gardner was excellent, although I didn't see him do much in the part I saw. Looked confident enough. Keane looked about as sprightly as Pires! But great goals though!
Weimann looked either nervous, or a bit shit!!
I thought Collins and Dunne looked good from what I saw. Clark generally good in midfield. Petrov looked absolutely out on his feet!
-
Wonder if we'd have won if Frimpong hadn't gone off.
That was the turning point of the game!
Entertaining game and great finishing by Keano!
-
I am surprised to see most of you posting on here cos after reading posts on the match thread I was expecting slashed wrists all around!
-
Fair play to Keane. 2 terrific goals, that no one else in our squad would have scored.
Gary Gardner is a very good player at 19, and deserved to start. We looked better balanced with him, Clark and Petrov together.
Bent and Gabby can't play together very effectively.
Warnock did ok after he had settled, but was lucky to stay on.
Frimpong and Kightly are quality, and if Wenger wants to let him go in the summer we should be in.
-
Fair play to Mccleish for changing it around, can we string two wins together now.
-
Is there a 'Fuck me, thank fucking fuck' emoticon?
-
Always rated that Keane....
-
That was very entertaining to watch, even neutrals would have enjoyed it.
We played well for 15 minutes, looked comfortable where Wolves looked scared, then inexplicably we just stopped playing. Cue 30 minutes of them running at us at will, really piss poor stuff.
Better in the second half, but the key moments were Frimpong (who bossed the first half) going off and that fucking cretin Henry getting a red card.
What a stonker of a goal from Keane.
-
Great result, and that is much more important than the performance. Actually looking forward to MOTD for a change. The QPR game will be huge for both teams now! Come on Villa, keep it going!
-
Gotta say, a midfield with Gardner and Clark in has to be our future. Whether them alone, or with a third. They're both fantastically talented players.
-
We were abysmal for 20 minutes in the second half. As bad as Spurs/Swansea etc. Second half better. When are we going to put in a performance for 90 (or 98) minutes? We have some exciting players and some players that just aren't good enough.
If we're going to play like that, Petrov needs a rest and we need to replace James Milner.
-
I take back what I said about Keane, he did the business, a bloke who can actually shoot from outside the box. I cant help thinking if Frimpong had stayed and they had 11 it would have been a fifferent result
-
The first ten minutes and the second half were bright. The Frimpong exit and Henry sending off obviously helped matters, but Keane's emphatic finish proves his worth. A lot of favorable results in the table today also.
-
Great result. Work will be so much fun on Monday...
-
Cracking game of football, even if the quality was decidedly iffy. Villa were poor for most of the first half, but the change at half time steadied things, and the (deserved) red card swung it our way.
The defending for both their goals was dreadful, but Keane's two brilliant class strikes won it.
-
.. and in the changing room McLeish smothers Robbie Keene in kisses!
-
Oh, forgot, what an excellent debut for Gary Gardner.
-
Theirs only one Keano!
To be honest i thought it was a poor signing and hes not the greatest passer but what he does do is create a goal out of nothing and shoot at the slightest opportunity. We haven't got that in our team which would really make a difference playing at home
-
Keane certainly has a decent footballing brain. Quality still and a shame he is not here very long.
Our defence does worry me so much but they held together well for the last 10 when needed. Why can they not be that solid for a whole match.
Great win, not a great performance.
-
Top win.
Albrighton played very well, Bent and him need more chemistry.
Keano - what a 2nd goal.
-
Can't see why some are being so negative. That was a proper 'derby' game and people are foolish if they thought we'd stroll to a 3-0. Thought the back two were brilliant and won so many headers especially in the second half. First half was a mixed bag with Gabby esp[ecially disappointing but we dominated second half and probably should've put it to bed in the closing minutes with a bit more composure. Keane has proved all the doubters who spouted crap on the other thread wrong, it was always going to be a risk free gamble and it's just paid off.
-
Oh, forgot, what an excellent debut for Gary Gardner.
Yeah, he looked assured didn't he. Shame he didn't put that header in, it would've capped an impressive debut.
Special mention for Keane too, brilliant finishes.
-
Clark and Gardner should be given a few games in centre midfield to show what they can do. If they make a couple of mistakes against QPR next week, who cares, just give them some matches together.
Overall though, we could probably of lost that as we did win it. We're still shit, but there are, fortunately, teams who are more shit than us.
In fact, I'd argue that everyone from 6th down are shit - just some are shitter than others.
Thanks Mr Henry and, most of all, thank-you Robbie Keane!
-
Anybody want to join me in a AM's post-match press conference drinking game?
Every time a phrase is mentioned, drink accordingly:
'Grit' - 1 shot
'Character' - 1 shot
'Mental toughness' - 2 shots
'We showed real physicality' - 2 shots
'We really missed emile's creative dynamism today, and anyway he's better than Messi'- Entire bottle of tequila
-
Clark is such a composed figure in midfield. I don't think he'll ever grab the headlines but he is such a good base to build a team around. His positioning and passing makes everyone else play better.
-
Won the last 4/5 away games lost 4/5 home games! On that I bet we beat Arsnal and then lose to QPR
-
It's pretty clear we can't defend, so McLeish really has to set his stall out and attack. If we do that, then we should outscore most of the teams below 7th. Today we made chances and took em.
That is the advantage we have in having Benty and now temporarily, Keane. Both know how to put the ball in the back of the net. Gabby wasn't at his best today, but he'll get us plenty and make a few too.
Have to be pleased with that really. It wasn't stylish, or particularly well organised by any means, but we had enough attacking pressure, and enough attacking talent, to score 3 goals.
Our defence isn't monumentally shit. Generally we'll concede 1-2, so we need to be making enough chances to try and get 2-3. Hell, if we do it well enough we could perhaps entertain and be like Newcastle in the mid 90's. Awful defence, but their attack was superb.
Bent's hitting form at the right time too. Any chance we could sign Keane in the summer? Wouldn't be a bad player to bring on in tight games. Possibly within budget too.
-
.. and in the changing room McLeish smothers Robbie Keene in kisses!
I doubt it, he'll be too busy counting how many 'get out of jail' cards he has left! ;)
-
3 points for villa, one large slice of humble pie for me.
Well done Keane, 2 cracking goals... even though i thought/think you're an over-the-hill, has been, so and so... you shut me up today.
Congratulations McLeish on having the bottle to start Gardner, who looked like an accomplished premier league player already.
I must say my patience was tested throughout this afternoon, but it all worked out well. Get in you villa boys!!
*cracks open a stella*
-
Well done Villa, massive three points

Received this at H-T:
Ha ha ha ha! That is all!
Payback will be so sweet on Monday...
-
Can't afford too many away games and a season ticket but after that and Chelsea I am going to swap it around! Well played Keane, the gamble paid off! Mention for Mcleish an excellent job of a half time rearrange. As ever we are truely shite at the back.
-
I think today emphasised that we need to get a player like Frimpong in asap. His urgency, pace, energy, enthusiasm, with a fair bit of quality is exactly what we lack.
Thought Gabby was off today, no surprise that he was taken off because he was ill.Thought Albrighton got better as the game went on but would still have N'Zog ahead of him.
Keane, well i would of taken him off at H/T tbh, but i have to say , in the end his quality was the difference.
Gardener, looks ok, good on the ball, has a good pass on him and looks a footballer. For me not a regular yet, but looks ok.
Petrov, same as always for me, ok at best, does some good things, but is overexposed because of his lack of pace. When we replace him with a Frimpong kind of player it will mean a 4 or 5 places difference in the league.
Defence, corners apart, i thought coped quite well.Clark looked very vulnerable in the 1st half, far too easily beaten for the 1st goal, Dunne and Collins were more comfortable when Wolves lumped it in the 2nd half.
Warnock defended well when he came on, and against a good winger , i thought Hutton was ok, hes certainly not as bad as some people make out tbh.
McL...have to say did'nt understand the sub at H/T, but it worked, and as a manager that speaks volumes.Time we gave him a break tbh.
-
Clark looks decidedly better in midfield than at the back for me. Not sure we can say 'he isn't a left back though'. He did well there last season. Would be nice if Warnock's form returned. I thought he was good up till the Swansea game. Hutton's defensive positioning is bloody terrible though (although he is starting to look more threatening going forwards)
Don't see how Ireland and Keane can play in the same side really, so will be interesting what we do in the next couple of games. Quite interested in what a Clark / Gardner / Ireland 3 man midfield might look like, although it might take a bit of settling into as none is exactly a regular. I suspect Petrov maybe can't play every game from now on in.
9 points above the R zone now, which feels a lot better than 6!! 3 wins and a couple of draws will probably achieve safety, so let's get most of those points on the board in our games against QPR, Wigan, Blackburn and Fulham

Great debut from Gardner. All the anti Keane fans watch MOTD. Fantastic performance from Keane. Got to admit Warnock was solid and helped change the game ........
-
Won the last 4/5 away games lost 4/5 home games! On that I bet we beat Arsnal and then lose to QPR
I think that has much to do with the atmosphere created at away games (loud, encouraging, supportive, giving the players some confidence) and the atmosphere at home (shit, critical, giving the players no confidence to do anything).
the players feel like they can do things playing away that they can't do at home, such as make a mistake and not be berated for it. This usually results in people trying things they wouldn't at home.

Two Saturdays in a row I have been farting about on the roof with the TV aerial. I must be insane. Next game I will probably be making some toast and running a bath

Make his/her life a misery. Nothing like payback on a gloater who already has egg on their face.
-
McCleish needs to make this his team but he has no money to do it. What he does have is two quality players in Clark and Gardner and they need to play. They shield our shakey defence much better and with Keane and Bent up top who knows what might happen.
Until the summer we have to try and make do with the likes of Warnock, Collins and co.
Albrighton might not have got his final ball in today but he did help Warnock out a lot in keeping Knightly out who looked a world beater in the first half.

You're just hoping for some Rod Hull like notoriety.

Couldnt agree more, he radiates composure in the middle, the 'anti-Collins' if you will. Cracking midfield player.
-
Today reminded me so much of that Everton game. Started well, were outplayed and looked like drawing the match but a bit of quality from one player pulled us through it.
-
Great game by Gardner as well I know hes only young but considering he played wolves midweek and put in a good performance in a hard Derby game he did really well
-
It's McLeish, Clark, Keane.
Am I the only one who is bugged by the constant misspelling of their names?

Will have to echo, credit where it's due for McLeish and Warnock today. Hopefully knowing he's not inked on to the team sheet will make Warnock pull his finger out a bit. McLeish, for all his bashing, made a change for the better and put a fairly adventurous side out. With Bent and Keane, there's gonna be goals.

I do think Marc deserves credit as well. The two of them stopped Kightly from playing.
-
I wonder what this thread would look like if Warnock had played like Clark in the first half? Clark is most definitely not a left back however, as the second half proved, he is going to be a very, very, very good midfielder.
-

The Beeb saying Frimpong at hospital with a serious facial injury. Nasty

And I'm delighted by this, both as a villa fan and an irishman. I hope Trap puts him in the middle ahead of Whelan or Andrews, if Ciaran keeps this form up, he'll have to.
-
Does anyone know why we played in boring white, instead of historic claret and blue?
-
Must say I disagree with a lot of the posts here blaming our defence. Our midfield was shocking in the first half. Neither wide man tracked back hardly at all. Petrov and Gardner were bullied by the Wolves duo.
Huge change at the break. I felt before the game moving Clark out of the middle was a mistake and so it proved. He dominated the midfield in the second half. He won anything physical. Thought Hutton did ok as did Warnock once he stopped diving in. Keane had a fine second half. Gardner has nice touches but less of the hyperbole would help I reckon!! Petrov was anonymous again for me. Bent's movement was good today but the delivery from Albrighton has to improve. Bannan and Weimann were shocking when they came on.
Big 3 points coming from 2-1 down. Injury and red card were in our favour but we edged it I thought. Was more the impact of Keane though rather than any sustained pressure that brought the winner. Still a lot of decisions when Ireland,
Nzogbia and Gabby are all fit.
-
Does anyone know why we played in boring white, instead of historic claret and blue?
Maybe superstition. Won at Chelsea, now Wolves wearing that kit.
-
It's McLeish, Clark, Keane.
Am I the only one who is bugged by the constant misspelling of their names?
No.
Another one is Gardner. We've had two of them FFS.

No.

How are Mgleish, Clarke and Keene normally mispelled?
Oh and another is Bent...
:)
-
Well we waited 12 years for Keane to that for us. Thought the movement between him and Bent was excellent. Gardner looked like he been playing first team for years.
I suggest Alan Hutton gets instructions on how to defend on his next sleeve tat. The amount of times he lets wingers get crosses in the box is nothing short of disgraceful. Worst full back I have ever seen in a Villa shirt.
-
Yes PWS.
Much as i like Gardener and Clark, i think a midfield with Herd's urgency and pace would be better, alongside either.
I think long term, Gardener is certainly the lcentral midfielder we build around, i would like Clark to play in the back 4.On todays performance Frimpong would'nt be the worst signing, and there is always Herd as well.
-
Vital three points which makes a big difference in keeping our distance from the stragglers.
Keane's finishing was top drawer, Gardner looked well within his depth, and we were generally reasonably comfortable second half even before Frimpong went off.
Less positively, we still struggle to keep possession even against 10 men, we should have been more clinical on the break, we continue to concede from corners, and Warnock's earliest contributions could easily have seen him in trouble with the ref. I always thought Clark has looked like a fish out of water when played at LB, and today proved it I think. Good midfielder though.
-
To all those moaning about the Keane deal.
That'll do nicely :)
-
I like Herd's urgency, but he often overdoes the haste bit and his passing is absoltely nowhere near Clark's standard. Clark consistently helps us get a foothold in games. He'd be my first choice centre midfielder at the moment.

It's Gardner. Gardner. Gardner. Repeat. Gardner.
-
Well that was a bit exciting wasn't it?
The 433 suits the players so much better than 442, especially away from home so credit to Mcleish for changing it. Though I suppose he has to take the blame for getting it wrong in the first place, although I think Clark replacing warnock at lb is something many of us wanted to see.
I think we learned today we need Clark or Herd in the middle of the park, otherwise we get walked through a bit too easily, hopefully Mcleish will learn this lesson for good now.
Overall I think the manager deserves credit today as he changed it at half time and his loan signing did the business.
Another positive for me was so many academy players playing a big part today. There are still problems but I'm a happy Villa fan today, and one who is hoping that some of these youngsters can live up to their potential and allow us to build a team around them.
-
Really enjoyed that, good to have an exciting derby game after the last few drab ones. Thought we played well in patches, good to see Bent getting more involved, looks good with Keane. Am loving seeing all the youth team getting a game, maybe we do have an exciting future after all! Credit to McLeish, happy birthday!!

Goals! (http://www.3news.co.nz/VIDEO-All-goals-2-3-Wolves-Vs-Aston-Villa-premier-league-201112/tabid/317/articleID/240183/Default.aspx)

I hope you are right MC, but Frimpong, in the 1st half bossed the midfield because we could'nt handle his power and pace.Clark struggled against the movement and pace of the Swansea midfield. We missed Herd in that game.
Clark , alongside a good defender, would be excellant in the back 4, his distribution, and footballing brain would be a trmendous asset.
Personally Capoue, or now Frimpong, would be my priority in the summer.Hopefully Gardener will develop to play alongside him, but lets wait and see, i think we might need to reign in the expectations on him though.
-
McLeish in exciting game, attacking football shock.........................
-
Sorry.......Gardner.
-
I thought Clark did OK in the first half considering he was up against a good winger and left completely isolated by Gabby. Kightly saw a lot of the ball one on one with him, it was always going to be a struggle. Warnock definitely profited from Albrighton's industry - and Clark providing a good central shield - in the second.
At last returning ex-player syndrome works in our favour. Two brilliant strikes from Keane, although they probably only gave us back what his presence,or otherwise, helped to cost us in the first place.Very Lee Hendrie. Lovely to see the goals go in, though.
It was a truly excellent debut from Gardner. The biggest plus was that he looked like he belonged there. He did and will make mistakes, but he looks a real good player in the making.
Keane has given Mcleish a problem. He can't drop him after those goals, he's going to find it hard, as he did today, to accommodate him without us getting outmanned and overrun in central midfield.
Petrov should never have played against Swansea after getting knackered and injured 48 hours previously against Chelsea. He's now running on two star again and needs a good rest.
-
Cheers Legion, I won't get bored of watching that winner very fast.
The defending for their second does make me shudder, though. Our pathetic defending of corners is getting embarrassing and if we can't get it sorted it's a big mark against the manager.
-
How the Villa can play with your emotions,at ht I was a snappy sod to my nearest and dearest, now I'm treating the good lady to a romantic/celebratery dinner! UTV.
-
Hard work on the training ground paid off. Comfortable victory and in some style. Randy will be delighted.
Team 10/10
Manager 10/10.
Well done lads!
-
I agree with the points above about Keane presenting us with a problem. We already have one with Gabby and Bent. At least Keane's isn't a long term issue.
We have 2 games in 4 days in a week's time. I'd have thought that merited some rotation, illness and injury permitting. Petrov shouldn't play both games I suspect, neither should Keane. I'd go 4-2-3-1 at Arsenal, with Ireland back in the side if ready. And then less sure about QPR, but perhaps Keane in and more of a 442, though Clark in midfield is a must for me.
Anyone else get the feeling that Bannan isn't going to feature too much going forwards?
-
Keane is going to have to work on his goal celebrations. They are a bit rubbish.
-
1752: More Emmanuel Frimpong news now, and it isn't good. According to BBC WM, Wolves' on-loan midfielder has fractured a cheekbone and will be out for three months.
Shame for the lad. He's a cracking player.

Very good.

5live saying Frimpong in the hospital. His going off benefited us but I hope he hasn't damaged his eye badly or anything...
Edit; Just read the post from Summers. Bad injury but at least it's not a career-ender or anything.
-

My opinion on it is that we've got a nice problem to have trying to fit different players in. Would be interesting to see if McLeish does go for Keane permanently in the summer. On the right deal (which might prove a problem as I'd say he's on a fair wedge in LA) then it'd be a risk worth taking imo.

We all know Keane's goal celebration- he scored against us enough- but I imagine we didn't see it today as he showed respect to one of his old teams, a bit like when Milner scored against us this season.

Phew, feared the worst when we went in 2-1 down at half time. Gives us a bit of breathing space...
Makes such a big difference to my Saturday evening when we win!
Me too ....its sad isn`t it ? :)

Not at all my old friend. We have friends round for dinner - fish risotto and chocolate bread and butter pudding - and I hate it if I have to be all cheerful and good company if we have lost. Today's result ensures I shall be the most generous of hosts...

Its called ****** luck. Its like that Swansea lad scoring against us - it should never happen but it does

Frimpong possibly out for 3 months with a fractured cheekbone. That could really bugger wolves chances of staying up.

No. And while we're at it can we add of / have to the list?

If you or I had a fractured cheekbone we'd be back at work on Monday morning. It's only a 'serious' injury if you play contact sport for a living.
-
Phew, feared the worst when we went in 2-1 down at half time.
Today's result ensures I shall be the most generous of hosts...
likewise Mr Moore but I shall be serving up Chicken Tikka, Chicken Korma, Beef Madras, honey and mint grilled lambs chops, beef koftas, onion bhajees, Nans, poppadums and copious glasses of various reds !!!
It does make a difference when we win - its so infrequent these days we can afford to fork out on lavish meals ! - Plus my guest is a red and they are currently 3 -1 down.....I might even get a **** tonight ! (more chance of us winning the league I fear ) hope the evening goes well - all the very the best mate !!
-
The Keane goals are the type we so rarely see from a Villa player. A match winner of the highest calibre. The Academy players are inching their way into the team. This time next year we could have an incredible midfield that will make all the difference.
Comical thing on the way back to the station. Huge fat Wolves fan walking among the Villa fans trying to cause a fight. The solitary copper in the area just says 'why are you walking with that lot, Adam?' it must be great to be on first name terms.
Happy birthday Alex McLeish.

I do (sort of).

Well, I'm quite happy with that. Not the best in the first half but played some good football in the second and what about Keane's goals? Wow. Can't wait to see them again on MoTD.
Nearly got flattend outside the ground when the police pounced on a chap and threw him to the ground. Got kicked, accidentally, be someone turning around to see what was happening. There's a nice bruise on my leg. I'll claim it as my football injury.
-
I love shots that go in with a really loud THUMP off the crossbar.
For Keane's second, the microphones picked it up brilliantly.
-
.. and in the changing room McLeish smothers Robbie Keene in kisses!
I doubt it, he'll be too busy counting how many 'get out of jail' cards he has left! ;)
Considering Keane WAS his get out of jail card today, kisses it will be then!

-
It always feels better after a victory but young players are starting to show their value. Clark for me should start every week in midfield and I'd like to see Gardner being phased in for Petrov. Petrov to start but try and get Gardner on after about 60 minutes.
-
Haven't seen any of the game yet as I was on children's party duty, but sounds like a much better second half. How did Gardner do?
-
Gary Gardner's tweets tonight are restoring my faith in the modern footballer, they're not all money grabbing tossers after all. He's genuinely buzzing. Well done that man.
-

It was a good second half we were helped by Frimpongs injury and Henrys stupidity
-
Just in from work, no idea how we played but its one of those games were I genuinly could'nt give a fuck as long as we win, todays result has saved me from at least 6 months of grief and I will be painting Wolverhampton claret and blue tonite.

Definitely not

He really looks the part, good on the ball, some decent tackles, you would never have guessed it was his first real start in the PL, I have been waiting to see him, he did not dissapoint, great prospect-no doubt

I hope he got a red card.
On an unrelated note, how come everyone can spell Frimpong but not Clarke or Gardener?
-

He's also decent enough to send Frimpong a message. Future captain material.

Bbc wm were wetting their knickers at half time over wolves. when keane equalised you could hear the pain in the commentators voice. tossers
-
Frimpong is hilarious. He said all he remembers is headbutting Petrov's foot, and he hopes he's okay. Also tweeted saying something like "don't worry about me. hope petrov's foot is on after kicking a meal face".

For example:
What can i say?? What a day for me making my full debut dream come true and a win!!! So so happy!! Villa fans amaizing today! Keano #legend!
And:
Wow! What a feeling!! Thank you for all my support!! What a win!! Lads were amaizing! Worked hard great character to come back!!! Dream!!!!!

Because WM stands for Wolves Media ;)

For today, I'll give you that. One swallow doesn't make a fellatrix though. After Chelsea came Swansea and after today come QPR, we can't afford to throw it away again!

Went to the game today and stuck WM on in the car coming home. Listened to their "commentary" of the highlights of the game. How right you are. The glee in Mark Regan's voice when Wolves scored and were on top, was unmistakable. The difference in tone when Keanoooooooooooooooooooooo stuck the winner in was unbelievable, he couldn't even come close to disguising how disappointed he was. I think and I am going back in the memory bank here when I heard him do a trailer a few years ago, that he is a Blues fan. I am sure he said, when talking about his Football memories, that he said that he remembered going in the Tilton with his Dad?. He also loves stirring the sh*t on the phone ins, never missing an opportunity to run the club down and he was doing it when we were doing well under MON, so he hasn't got a lot of time for us.
Anyway, enough of them/him, the game. Thought we were excellent for 15 mins and then totally got battered and were fortunate to be only 2-1 down. Have to be honest, I would have had Keane off at half time and wee Barry on and go for 4-3-3. Humble pie has never tasted so good. Warnock coming on was key, he was as good today as he was at Chelsea. Clacker back in midfield controlling it and it looked better. Got the equaliser and then thought it was there for the winning from both teams, but Frimpong and Henry going off made a difference. Superb winner and then really we should have scored two more after, but the Villa never ease your nerves do they?.
Delighted to see Gardner get a start and thought he did well. Also, taking away him snatching at chances, young Andy Weimann was very impressive. His touch and movement for me, puts him way ahead of the Fonz. Very excited to see him in the future.
First trip to Molineux for 20 odd years and it's certainly not as (ahem) interesting as it was in the 80's and 90's. Hope they stay up and I will go again next season.
Saturday nights are great when we win huh?
UTV !!
-
The BBC website currently read: 'Keane double defeats Villa'. Hmm.
-
Well done Villa, let us keep this going and build on it, great to see Gardner start!
-
Just a massive relief, yet another emotional rollercoaster and a massive 3 points, 9 points clear of the bottom 3 so we should be more than ok, if we could follow up with a win against QPR we could really start to relax but wont count my chickens regarding that, well done Gardner and thank you Robbie UTV
-
Facking brilliant, we deserve days like this for all the shite we've had to watch this season.
Thought we were going to lose at half time as Wolves were well on top as we crumbled after conceding as usual. Shame as we played really well for the first 20 minutes, passed it around nicely.
Credit to Keane, didn't want him but those two finishes were top class. More of the same in the next 6 weeks please.
And credit to McLeish aswell, bringing on Warnock wasn't a popular move but it worked as in the first half Kightly was obliterating Clark pretty much every time he ran at him not helped by Gabby not tracking back.
Putting on Warnock and getting Clark back into midfield helped us get control of the game even before the Frimpong injury and then Karl Henry remembered he had money on us winning 3-2.

I'm glad someone else has seen through Mark Regan on WM. the man is a Villa hating Bluenose who takes great delight in a Villa defeat. His phone ins are full to the brim with snide Villa digs, whilst he'll twist and turn everything Small Heath related into a positive. He's an absolute wanker.

It's not even because he's one of that lot. Virtually everyone on WM seems to take great delight in attacking us, even the ones who claim to be Villa supporters.
-
Although it seems far from obvious, I can categorically assure you that Mark Regan is in fact a Villa fan.
-
Henry, what a total idiot, he did his usual thing of going in after the ball had gone a few times just a slow dirty player. Then caps it off by getting sent off, he cost them the match today. Mcarthy must be mental. This was a massive game for them today. I dont think they will recover.

Yes we don't have a full back called Stephen Wanker. Elementary spelling error!
-
Just caught the highlights on the Irish version of MOTD ( on after Chelseas 0-0 draw) and only on second due to he high number of Irishmen on display. Hopefully Robbie can keep that up for the next 5 games and then he can cool his boots 'till the Euros in the summer.
I hope Weasel Downing had a nice day on the bench fop the 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' by the way. Wanker.

Not just local. I could feel the pain in Pat Murphy's voice when they went to him for our winning goal.
Last week he went on and on about how desperate Villa were in signing keane at which point Mark Puget reminded him that no more so than Manure with Scholes and arsenal with Henry. That shut him up.
-

I agree, I think Bolton will stay up ahead of them.
I do like big Mick and they do play some decent football at times as they showed at the end of the first half against us but I dunno they do seem too easy to score against, the first Keane shot went past Hennessey pretty easily I thought.

Thier defence is pretty awful, i think big Mick is getting the most out of the resources he has got and lets face it they dont have much, Fringpong was immense until he went off and will now be out for a long time. They look doomed

I'd say you are not alone.
Our game was the featured match on Irish radio today, the co-commentator was Mick Martin.
The senior commentator mentioned that when he was talking to the local media folks the were all raving about Micks dad , Con , the Villa legend...and that he was a much better player than Mick. "Maybe" said Mick, "but I got more caps than he did".

He's not the player I thought he was going to be. People have described him as being like Gerrard whereas I do not think he is as athletic as Gerrard. He did however look very comfortable and assured. A promising debut but I did not see the heroics that others have described.

He should have buried the early header though. Delighted to see him get a start today. The first of about 600 for us hopefully.

I did not mean my comment as a criticism. He looked a very intelligent footballer whereas I was expecting a more powerful player. As you say, at only 19 he is likely to fill out a bit and therefore will improve that side of his game.

Apologies if this has been answered already but why the black armbands today? Whilst on the subject why don't official kit sponsors design and manufacture a shirt with an integral black armband- got to look better and more respectful than the assorted badly torn bits of black gaffa tape which very often end up being ripped off.

He did win quite a few headers tbf.
I thought it was an assured rather than outstanding debut, a few times he got muscled off the ball by Henry/Frimpong.
-
People have likened Gardner to Gerrard. I can't really see that. I don't think he looks as explosive or pacey nor capable of such outrageous passing and shooting
He looks a lot more like Lampard to me. Composed on the ball, full of energy, gets into the right positions in the box and normally a good finish at the end of it.
-
I think the majority of players would get muscled off the ball by Frimpong.
-
Good result.
Was pleased with the contribution of Gary Gardner, you wouldn't know it was his first full match.
Clark played very well in the second half (he isn't a left back, but let's not slag Alex for trying something different) and is an excellent and intelligent defensive midfield player.
Thought Warnock played well when he came on and Kightly didn't get a kick in the second half.
Keane was very good, took a bit of time to get going but showed some excellent movement and two brilliant goals.
Good to see so many of our youth coming through the ranks and playing.
A good win today and a bit of excitement at last.
-

Should play more often in it as we won at Chelsea wearing white aswell.
It's been a lucky kit and we have been good away from home. If we could improve our home form a late push for Europe could be on the cards. Our players haven't looked comfortable at Villa Park this season.

Our players have had a look of Rabbits in the Headlights at home this season. It's as if the pressure of playing at VP is stifling them. They need to get over this soon as we need to start picking up 3 points more ofter at home.
If not we could be in for a repeat of the uncomfortable last month of last season.
At least we look like picking up max points away from home these days( more often than not).

i have no idea how good he is, this was the first time i have seen him, i am allways a bit cynical regarding the opinions of youth team players, the Moore Brothers were going to be world beaters. He has very good technique, he looks like he has time on the ball, to expect the next Steven Gerrard or Lampard is fancifull, the great thing is that we continue to produce players that are capable of playing in the PL- Gabby Albrighton Clark Herd Bannnan and now Gardner, what would our squad look like without these guys?
-
I think Albrighton should get some praise, as although poor much of the time going forward, he helped Warnock lose out the the left and stop Kightly getting on the ball, who destroyed us first half. Gabby, sick or not, should take note. He appears as if he is sulking on the wings, and is not playing great at the moment. For me, it is one or the other, and Bent scores goals.
Next dilemma, Keane or Ireland behind Bent. Tough call, but I would have the second half side from today start next week, with Gardner and Albrighton playing the wider midfield roles, but Gary tucked in and getting forward.
-
Can't believe the criticism of Gardner.
We called for him on this site. He got the chance. He took it. Very well. Yes some 'less than experienced' decisions. But what do you expect. Good full debut. Very good. Oh and good for AMc for giving him that chance.
I wish he had got that header! Imagine the confidence. Bloody hell given where this Club is - thank G for the Academy/reserves.
Big respek for K Mac.
-

His clearance off the line was great too.
-
The 8 minutes of stoppage time summed up why we draw so many games. Numerous times a player will be clear through on goal the right pass is on but the player with the ball either whips in a hopeless cross or keeps running with the ball and wastes the chance. Was no one else screaming 'PASS or getting real frantic like me then?
-
Have not read any of thread. Was there today. Very happy. Fucking over the moon in fact. Yeeesssssssssss!

I was Goldie. I think Wieman wasted 2 opportunities to find Bent who had found acres in the box and played them both to Wolves men. Could have got 2 more on the break at the end with a bit more composure.
-
3 points. That's all that matters. Nothing else. A win. A win.
Hic!
-
Looking at Keane's winner, a stunning strike with next to no backlift took me back to that great strike by Dalian at Hillsborough. That was a great strike, this was better.
-
proved me wrong today robbie, well done .
I would still stick with the team that beat Chelsea however as the balance seems better. 3 pts today was crucial.
-
Watched the game back this morning. Few differences between what I thought at the time of the game and watching it again.
Collins was outstanding. A couple of brilliant blocks and won everything in the air. Only remembered one mistake let on when he let the ball bounce in the box and Dunne had to clear. Probably his best performance of the season and justified his inclusion ahead of Cuellar
Dunne was dire in the first half. While Clark was more at fault for Kightlys goal, Dunne should have anticipated the danger quicker and came across to help out. He was dire for the second, rushing out leaving Edwards inside. When you make a move like that you have to get the ball. If I was being harsh Given should have pushed up into the space he left. Dunne also failed to cut out a couple of crosses in the first half. He was excellent after the break.
Clark wasn't as dire left back as I thought. Gabby too while he didn't help out that great is probably taking too much stick. The biggest issue was that we had no central midfielder covering at all. Clark made a huge difference in midfield. Can't play Petrov in a 2 man midfield with any of our other options.
I thought live that Hutton was solid enough. Watching it second time around though the amount of crosses put in from his side was criminal. Especially in the second half. Thankfully Collins read the most of them. Hutton offered zilch going forward again.
Keane pretty much played in the Stevie Ireland role. Excellent display from him too. Always aware of the space around him.
Bent was much better. Good movement from him
We fucked around too much at 3-2. Weimann in particular should have left that chance to Bannan. We should have killed the game off a lot earlier.
Warnock is a bird brain but looked more motivated anyway
Gardner was tidy on the ball but a decent display rather than anything outstanding. Albrighton worked hard but too many times disappointed with his decision making on the ball
I thought Fletcher and the Wolves widemen were very good. Frimpong was excellent in the first half. Berra is hopeless. One of the worst penalties you will see conceded
-
Gabby Albrighton Clark Herd Bannnan and now Gardner, what would our squad look like without these guys?
Shit the bed. That is a very good point. Without them we'd be relegated for certain I reckon. That or about 30m poorer.
-
3 points. That's all that matters. Nothing else. A win. A win.
Hic!
Taking into account everything that happened was it a deserved win?
-
Re Gardner's header: what an absolutely fantastic ball from Clark.

yes we're owed a few.

Looking at Keane's winner, a stunning strike with next to no backlift took me back to that great strike by Dalian at Hillsborough. That was a great strike, this was better.
As great a strike as it was by Keane, it's still looks like slow motion compared to Dalian's shot.

Apologies if this has been answered already but why the black armbands today? Whilst on the subject why don't official kit sponsors design and manufacture a shirt with an integral black armband- got to look better and more respectful than the assorted badly torn bits of black gaffa tape which very often end up being ripped off.
The Wolves Kitman died during the week.
Sent you a message JD

..... Hutton offered zilch going forward again.
It was his teasing cross that was headed back to Keane for the winner.
-
Another really good away win. I've learnt to be circumspect when talking up younger players as so many show early promise only to stall and not develop much beyond that but in Clark and Gardner I think we have too real thoroughbreds, they have the ability but also the intelligence and confidence to go with it. AM has handled them well by easing them through naturally rather than trying to force the issue.
It was a cracking game of football with some excellent goals with Robbie's winner the pick of the bunch which prompted me to say something I never thought I would "Keannnnooo".

I was tyoing Keanooo on the match thread and had to stop myself! Bad isn't it....
I agree re Clark and Gardner. Both will benefit from staying in the side, ditto Herd, although he could slot into right back too.
Watching back this am, I thought the second Keane strike had taken a nick on the way through, but it was natural movement on the ball, but Gardner nicely blocked any view Hennesey had of it leaving the foot, making it much harder to stop.

Some right boring bastards on here.
I don't care if the ball took any kind of deflection on it's way in, we won a derby, enjoy life for 7 days before you get any more excuses ready.
Thank you Alex and the boys you made my weekend.
UTV.

Not read the thread yet but some great performances my some of the much maligned players, I thought Collins and Warnock were excellent and Hutton was reasonable. Kightly never had a kick second half.
-
What a difference a Saturday win makes, a few beers before MOTD, a stroll to get the Sunday papers followed by a nice cup of tea and then online to read what my Villa friends are posting. Happy days :)
-
Big respek for K Mac.
Why do we let kids post on here...tut tut
Yes I agree and I am looking forward to Wednesday night for the Next gen Qtr final.

Couldn't give a monkey's. It was a terrific game and a brilliant day. 8)

Good win, good game end to end action Gardner did well Keane scored two really good goals more of the same from now on please.
-
Back to our home from. Do you think the tense atmosphere, regarding McLeish and the low attendances, has affected the players? As gervilla has said, they just seem to freeze at Villa Park and look under constant pressure. They play with more confidence and flair away from home.
-
Re Gardner's header: what an absolutely fantastic ball from Clark.
And a great cushioned header from the kid to set up Keane's goal, too.
That was a real gutsy, hurly burly derby. To come out with the three points with a team that featured so many of the young lads speaks volumes. I thought Gary Gardner had an excellent game considering the circumstances: what an assured debut. Some people are comparing him to Lampard whilst others see a touch of Gerrard in the way he plays. It sounds a bit corny, but I think the lad has his own way of doing things - he has a superb shot, he has a great pass and his heading is top-notch, too. (Was Lampard as good at nineteen? Was Gerrard? I can't remember to be honest.) I'd possibly be inclined to play GG behind a front two, but that's beside the point, he is simply a great prospect.
Seeing these young lads in the side - and winning - restores my faith and gives me huge hope for the future.
-
Gardner had a good debut and will get better with more games. Clark was excellent when he came into midfield and Keane was excellent. He was constantly shouting at Bent to keep moving and Bent responded and worked harder than usual. Collins had a great game and it would be criminal to let him go in this window .......
-
I was saying for most of the first half to my mates that he needs to put Clark back in midfield and put Warnock on, but it would have been Gardner who would have gone for me and i think he would have if Gabby had'nt been forced to go off. Not a fan of Warnock but he did well when he came on and he looked up for it.
Two fantastic goals from 'keano', the second was worthy of winnng any game. It's a shame he's not here for longer, he offers us something different from what we have.
Great day all round and it was nice to be able to drink in a pub with Wolves fans without any hassle.
-
A great result. I had my doubts about Keane, but all credit to Alex McLeish, he bagged us three points yesterday. Wolves are a poor side, yet at times we allowed them to play, and it almost cost us. We had a big chunk of luck when Frimpong went off, and Henry's stupidity practically paved the way for us. But AM's substitution at half time also proved a turning point. So, credit where it's due.
-
Just flicked through the match thread. Amusing and entertaining as always. Had to chuckle at the clamour for Keane's removal before the break.
-
It may have been mentioned elsewhere, but does anyone know why N'zogbia wasn't in the squad yesterday?
-
Heel injury, I believe.

Just watching a delayed Goals and they just commented on his 3rd goal on how he was telling players where to play it and then was outside the area because he knew we were committing a lot forward and needed someone to stay out for cover. They also showed he is constantly looking around him even before he gets the ball. Something we haven't really had since Merson I would say
-
Have to say that I've been quite impressed with the way Keane has been instructing the other players and generally geeing up the lads.

Gerrard yes, Lampard no.

Agreed. I was at Warnock's end in the 2nd half and thought he played very well: strong, determined, good going forward. And Collins defended superbly when we were under pressure in the last few minutes.
-

Without a shadow of a doubt for me.

That must be a contributory factor but it's probably as much to do with not having the players to break down teams who are well organised. We're better on the break and home teams are obliged to come out and attack. We've been a counter-attacking team since early MON days.
-
I'd also add that this is why AM has bought Keane in as he does have a bit of guile and is still a match winner as yesterday proved.
-
I'm surprised more isn't being made about how many of our young players played yesterday.
Clark and Gardner were superb in the midfield in the 2nd half, for a 21 and 19 year old that is really impressive.
Add to this Albrighton coming into the game more as it went on, as well as Bannan and Weimann coming on towards the end. With Gabby included as well it really does seem that the academy has found a really good generation of players for the 1st team.
-
It's still worrying how much trouble we have with crosses and high balls into the box. The sight of Dunne and Collins taking each other out for their goal was pretty alarming. Surely it cant be down to a new goalie,as Dunne would know how Given reacts to crosses. I think thats 10 goals conceded from corners now.
-

That's the boost and energy I was talking about when I thought it would be a good deal to bring him in. He's a vibrant, intelligent player, and despite being at the tail end of his career he can still offer something as we all saw.

As someone very rightly mentioned elsewhere, imagine what our squad would look like without these players.
-
Interesting point you raised ozzjim about whether you can play Gabby and Bent in the same team.I think you can, but as you suggested i think Gabby needs to stop sulking and work harder.
On his day Gabby can be unplayable, pace , strength, aggression, skill, he has it all, but he needs to focus on his workrate.
On ydays performance, just to add, i was well impressed with Weimanns workrate, and more importantly movement off the ball.He played well with Bent as well.We are a better team away from home, maybe ALL of our supporters need to get over McL being our manager.
-
The 8 minutes of stoppage time summed up why we draw so many games. Numerous times a player will be clear through on goal the right pass is on but the player with the ball either whips in a hopeless cross or keeps running with the ball and wastes the chance. Was no one else screaming 'PASS or getting real frantic like me then?
Weimann was guilty as charged on two occasions in injury time.
First one he's running down the left and Bent is unmarked in the centre of the box waiting to tap the ball in, instead Wiemann crosses into the 6 yard box and into Hennessey's hands.
The second was another break and he was running across the penalty area and the ball was coming nicely onto Bannan's left foot. Instead off balance Wiemann hopelessly skied it into the South Bank.
I know now people are writing off the Fonz he's our next great young white striking hope but I think he's a bit away from prem football so I'd loan him out again for the rest of the season.

Our home form has been poor for years, even when we were finishing 6th under MON, the most home games we ever won in a prem season was 10 out of 19 so quite a bit below the likes of Spurs.
Just seems to be a villa problem like conceding last minute goals, whoever the manager and players are.

combination of factors i reckon, partly tactical in that we played better on the break, partly that brummies like nothing more than a good whine!

I know it's been a problem for a few seasons, but it seems a much bigger one now. We are dropping far too many points at home. Those extra few points are crucial and we should be looking for better from our home games. We need Villa Park to be a fortress that other teams fear coming to. We need to show more initiative at home games, play with a bit more tempo and really get the fans on form. As we saw last year, a bad season can be redeemed with a few surprise results. Right now, we need that to come from our home form.
-
Heel injury, I believe.
Easily cured with a choke chain!

"Play with a bit more tempo" are the relevant words here IMO. It is something that bugs me, we get the ball, play it out or maybe Gabby or Albrighton run it out, into the opposition half then we stop, put our foot on the ball and play it backwards. Thus giving the opposition time to regroup. We rarely seem to keep moving it forward into the danger zone at pace, one touch and movement off the ball etc. That is the way to pull the opposition out of position and create chances, not by playing it backwards. How many times have we seen us get over the halfway line then stop and eventually play it back to the keeper?

:) made me smile .................. trouble is I can`t get Barbara Woodhouse`s voice out of my head now.. WALKIES !!!

There was an occasion in the second half where Bent was calling for the ball to come forward. He must be getting happier in his game.
It has been mentioned about players 'freezing' at Villa Park. We did that for a long while in the first half yesterday but got over it, particularly due to the inspired substitution at half time.
There is a great future ahead if we lift the clouds of doom, both players and supporters. We have seen what a great atmosphere can be generated at home in the Arsenal game, even without a full house. Someone very soon is going to be stuffed out of sight by us at Villa Park. I look forward to the explosion of relief.
I can't take all the good vibes. Think I will pop onto the club's Facebook site to be brought down to earth by the biggest bunch of idiots ever encountered. How the club have not shut it down, I will never know.

Agree with all of that. The swansea result is a classic example of the type of game we've experienced at VP for a number of years. Wigan in their early years in the division would be an example.
-
Bbc wm were wetting their knickers at half time over wolves. when keane equalised you could hear the pain in the commentators voice. tossers
Not being from the area, could someone explain why the local radio are grim towards us?
I'm listening to the phone-in on iplayer and you wouldn't know we were a local team. It's all about Wolves.
-
People have likened Gardner to Gerrard. I can't really see that. I don't think he looks as explosive or pacey nor capable of such outrageous passing and shooting
He looks a lot more like Lampard to me. Composed on the ball, full of energy, gets into the right positions in the box and normally a good finish at the end of it.
That might have been me after one of the Euro Youth Cup games, if you get the chance take a look at him in his own age group, its like watching an on form Gerrard against a lower league team, he's stronger, faster and sharper and has a great range of passing and shooting.
