Title: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Legion on January 15, 2012, 08:05:30 PM
I hate these bastards with a passion.

Hoping for: 0-8 Bent x3; Gabby x3; Keane x2

Expecting: 1-1 Gabby for us (12), Fletcher for them (88).

If ever there was a 'must win' game this is it! No points here and bottom five is a reality, a draw isn't enough of a result for us or them. Winning against the teams beneath us now will be the difference between staying up and going down. Sadly, I just can't see us winning, so I'll just close my eyes and cross my fingers I think!

We're a much better outfit away from home at the moment so looking for us to sneak it by a goal. Would be tempted to play N'Zogbia instead of Marc from the right. Think we could hurt them on the break with him and Gabby supporting Bent, Ireland from the middle with Petrov/Clark holding the fort.

A game we must get something out of.  I would take a draw.  A win would be a massive bonus to the confidence of the players, hopefully the manager and not least the supporters.

Can see us losing this one 2-1 as a) I'm going and b) after years of dominating them, the Black country teams seem to have the sign over us at the minute.

Think we'll take the lead in the first half and it will all collapse in the second half, sort of how last year was going until Heskey nodded one in at the end.

Going there in the 70's and 80's was always a nightmare. Especially for a night game.
Where the bus station is now used to be a railway goods yard and the bastards would lie in wait in there for the trains to arrive and ambush us. The police escort was always uncannily late in arriving to take us to the ground.
It'll be 2-1 to us with the young Mr. Keane getting the winner.

Looking at the table, winning this game could actually give us some breathing space between the bottom 7 clubs. I cant see Baggies beating Stoke or Fulham getting a result against Newcastle...however, it will be a very grim weekend if we lose and those results go against us.

Anyone else think that its about time Warnock was dropped from the first team set up for a few weeks if not permanently?  Honestly, he is pants and he should not accept his wages for the next 2 weeks.  No we all know why GH dropped him. pile of shit player
Title: Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Concrete John on January 16, 2012, 09:57:40 AM
If Herd is back I'd like to see him play and Clark move to LB.  And even if he isn't, I'd still drop Warnock and try something different in midfield.  Also agree with dropping Gabby as the balance of the side is served better if we don't try and accomodate both him and bent in the side, other than in a 4-4-2:-

Given

Hutton
Collins (although I'd prefer Carlos)
Dunne
Clark

Petrov
Herd

Super Marc
Ireland
N'Zogbia

Bent

Got a feeling we'll win this, so going to go 1-2 to us with Petrov and N'Zogbia netting one each.  They'll get a late goal and it'll then be backs to the wall for the last 10 minutes.

I'd be happy with a draw, already made the fatal mistake of betting on the Villa. The draw at VP already cost me now hoping for at least a draw to even things out. Although the finishing above them bet should be in the bag. I hope. 1-1 step forward Mr R. Keane in the last minute.

Have to win this one or we will start to loose that tiny bit of momentum that we have put together.
Hutton, Collins and Warnock will be targetted by any teams we are playing from now on. All our defenders, and to a lesser degree Dunne, are really not really at the races for some reason. If they get their shit together and play well in this game, this will breed confidence into the rest of team and we might play well for the full 90mins and not in fits and starts.
1-2, a nervy last ten minutes after a defensive fcuk up. Bent and Gabby.

I think N'Zogbia will connect better with Ireland, Given proved why he is our number 1 (proved me wrong as I'd have kept Guzan) and Delph simply could not be any worse than Warnock defensively but is far superiour going forward.

1-3 Bent; Fletcher; Gabby x2

I'm going along with a few Wolves Fans. I'm in with us, but the lad is in the Steve Bull/John Ireland Stand Upper, with a seat brought by some Wolves friends of mine. He's normally a jinx at away matches (apart from West ham and the Arse last season), so I think we're gonna lose.

Don't hate Wolves in the slightest, unlike their Sandwell neighbours. They tend to be fairly tolerant of Villa and their Fans by and large.(Obviously someone will have certain incidents to the contrary), but living amongst them, that tends to be the case.

I dont think he made that many, he is obviously more concerned bout survival than the FA Cup, yes they will be a bit better but Fletcher is the only change you would worry about, if our defence holds up we will beat them.

Agree with last few posts - we need to go there determined to win as i feel attack them and they are there for the taking

AS always we have the better players its down to how they are set out to play and how motivated they are to actually win.

A draw there will be a poor result for me

               Given
Cuellar  Dunne  Collins  Warnock

                 Petrov
Albrighton                 N'Zogbia

         Ireland       Gabby

Are you having a giraffe?

Exactly my thoughts!

It's a 4-5-1 that will actually allow us to advance the ball.

I don't think there's enough people in that side willing to track back & defend. Unless you'd be happy to win 5-4?

Robbie Keane to score against his first boy-hood-heroes?

Then to rip his Villa shirt off and underneath is a WBA shirt, who he's always supported since he was a kid.

Impossible with a team of Warnocks.  Wolves based on that performance are really atrocious.  How they managed a draw at Arsenal is beyond me.

Didn't Wolves put out a slightly weakened team yesterday?  Im still not taking this game for granted as some people are saying.  Playing in a cup game is different to a league game.  We're not exactly lighting up the prem with our lacklustre performances now are we?

That's my entire strategy right there. I don't care how we win, I want three points. Sort of like a 'Moneyball' approach. Defense doesn't score you goals. And by putting out the players with the highest chances of creating/scoring a goal it would allow us to essentially win the game, without playing anyone out of their preferred position.

I want to win. I don't care if it's 1-0, 3-2, or 8-7.

Yes, in a dream world but that team's just as likely to lose 4-1 as win 3-2.

Back in the real world, don't think their performance in the cup can be used to gauge this fixture. A tight game but one I expect us to get at least a point from. Villa 2-1.

Well, seeing as they had 10 changes vs sha I don't think we can take much from that match. They're goal is obviously prem survival.

Agree re Keane but that would be another mistEck as he would need to be subbed after 60. Logically, Gabby or Ireland or Albrighton would have to make way for him in the starting line-up, which would be daft.

If we do win it will be a narrow one. As discussed on numerous threads the side isn't set up properly. We are trying to shoehorn a 442 formation into players unsuited to it. In any case, the last thing we should do is move Clark out of midfield. However I expect that change to occur. With Fletcher up front I think Cuellar is definitely more effective against an elusive type of striker. Collins is fine against the physical ones. No chance of that change happening.

Nzogbia should be brought back in on the right but I wouldn't be averse to a vote of confidence being given to Albrighton. Ward is a very poor defender but decent going forward. Whoever is given the vote there has a big opportunity. Almost certainly Gabby will be on the left and Bent up top. Gabby for me looks sick of playing there but McLeish will continue to try and get both of them to play
together.

Ireland will be supporting Bent. Will be interesting to see who partners Petrov in the centre if as I expect Clark is not in midfield. Looks like he is trying to get rid of Delph so Gary Gardner could well be in
line for a start. I'd definitely keep Clark as we need someone to outfight the cloggers they have in there aswell as outplay them.

If McLeish picks the team right I fancy us to nick it 2-1.

Predicted earlier in the thread that Wolves would win this, having watched the Wolves B'ham cup game the other night, not sure how I came to that conclusion, must have been pissed, so having watched 2 distinctly average Championships sides play out there cup tie, I would revise it to being a Villa win, it has to be, how could any Villa team lose to such a mediocre side even as bad as we are at times.

Has to be Villa.

Wolves raise their game for the big occasion, they did it last season when they somehow beat Man. City, us,  Manure, Chelsea and Liverpool and yet were 3 minutes away from getting relegated!

Recently they've got very good draws at Spurs and Arsenal but I do think they're vulnerable at Molinuex as the pitch is quite wide and their defence struggles against pace.

Think I'd bring N'zogbia back for this as he's had good games against Wolves playing for Wigan in the past few seasons.

Some suggestions petrov and Ireland will play together in a 442 with keane upfront. Think this would be a risk and a mistake to start with. Would want Clark in midfield in this game, though warnock is turning into a liability again.

I find it odd we've let delph go on loan. Stan is looking tired and with herd injured we lack solid central options. Certainly suggests Gardner is chomping at the bit. Perhaps Daniel Johnson too? Always been impressed with him.

Given - cuellar, Collins, dunne, warnock - petrov, Clark - Gabby, Ireland, CNZ - bent

Guzan, Hutton, Gardner, albrighton, bannan, keane, weimann

So in that case basically what you are saying is any of the Wolves players that played the other night v Blues won't be playing today with 10 changes having been made and this was a side that they put out just for that cup game

This should be interesting.
