I think that's the team I'd have picked, but it's not without risks of course. Is Petrov really fit? Can CNZ reproduce his recent form, on the right, where I presume he's playing? Can Bent offer us what we need from a lone front man?

Really looking fwd to this. We may need to be patient. Swansea sit deep and keep the ball well. Might well be 0-0 at half time.

Sounds good.

Let Albrighton have a run at them in the second half.

I'm happy with that team, if we are doing well I'd like to see Gardner get a chance.

Swansea seem to be resting half their first team.

Can't complain too much about that.

Looks a good line up, also glad Petrov's fit. I'm feeling very positive about this.

Very risky team selection, Swansea have rotated against spurs and again today.

I'm glad it's still attacking though and no Heskey.
This is our absolute strongest team, so come on lads!!!

Up the Villa.

Post by: Matt Collins on January 02, 2012, 02:47:11 PM
I hope we stick to the same formation as last time around. They could put Ireland on the right and play 442, but I thought we had a really good shape against Chelsea and Arsenal. Plus Swansea will have 3 in central midfield.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Swansea City Match Thread
Post by: Summers on January 02, 2012, 02:52:37 PM
Gabby will step into Albrighton's place I assume. The exact right move. Absolutely thrilled McLeish has stuck with the trio of Ireland, Stan and Clark. Clark is really allowing Petrov the room to shine, and Ireland was fantastic last time out.

Warnock really is a liability, the problem with him, dunne and collins in the team is that you can near enough guarantee one easy chance given away for the other team every game.

We're getting with relative ease to their area so I'm quite confident we'll score at least a couple in this one. The question is whther we can keep a clean sheet from now on. Doesn't look so promising at the moment. Whenever they attack, they almost score  :-\

Perhaps, but there wasn't enough for Gabby to collapse the way he did. I'm not saying that excuses him not being given, but he should stay on his feet and try to play, not just give  up and throw himself over.

That Swansea chance was a direct consequence of knocking it long from a goalkick, and giving it away. If it's a good thing to pass out from the back, the deadball from the keeper should be no different.

Days like this I do get a bit fed up of Bent. He can score, yes. And he might well do so today, but he offers us so little. His first touch is usually terrible and attacks seem to break down when the ball gets to him.

Should be 2 - 0. We're very lucky.

Gabby is way, way too deep and not in any way a threat where he is playing. You can see Ireland trying to push it forward but Bent won't work as hard as Gabby would in coming back to receive. I'd rather we just stick him up front and play with one wide man.

N'zog and Ireland have been a lot of huff and puff but no end product yet...hard for them though with the lack of quality and movement around them.

Warnock - just terrible. MON had the right idea shipping him off to the reserves and Warnock's attitude at that time told me he is not worthy of the shirt.

Gabby - could be the difference in the second half if he can recapture his early season form. Not happened for him in the first half.

Bent - just hope he sticks one away if he gets a chance.

Clark and Petrov - doing ok

Right, we need to change things a bit. Warnock s going to cost us another goal, but Clark is doing well in midfield so perhaps Hutton at left back?

Bent isn't really working up front, but not quite sure what the answer is there. Can't really take him off when we need goals. We could go 442 with Albrighton right, but I fear that would empty the midfield too much and Swansea would play around us even more.

Bit of a tricky one really. Might just need to keep plugging away, try and get some set pieces as they look vulnerable at the back, and get Bent to offer us more.

Well I wouldn't have booed, but we need more guile, we need more patience and above all we need to calm down. Every time the defence get put under the slightest pressure they panic like pidgeons being charged at by a herd of wildebeest and smack the ball away. More calm, more movement, more guile in possession - maybe Bannan is the answer here.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Swansea City Match Thread
Post by: Villanation on January 02, 2012, 03:54:02 PM
Poor set up, poor tactics, Gabby might not be a lot of things but he's not a utility player, Left, Right and centre now I think in consecutive games, crazy, that said he's getting through a massive amount of work and the header in the 37th setting up Bent to have a pop was sheer brilliance, a better striker would have at least took that on rather than elect to pass out of the danger area.

Wait till the 60th, if it carries on Bent of, Gabby to the centre (he's really hungry) Clark of and maybe Ireland who looks as though is already fading to norm.

Nathen Dyer is a real handful, kind of player we should look to get.

Swansea could easily be 3 up.

Worst Villa player so far Warnock, Gabby is the match saver if played correctly, loads of work ethic from him.

It didn't warrant booing. I think we can win the game, get Ireland and N'Zog more involved as they've done good things. Gabby needs to improve a lot, and Bent needs to be given chances.

I'd like to see Gabby and Nzog swapping sides a bit more often.  Both will be a greater goal threat when they're playing as outside-in wingers.  At the moment they're set up to feed Bent and I'm not sure Bent's movement, whilst excellent, is good enough to justify nullifying two of our attacking players.

I see what you're saying Monty but Bannan never looks like he has the patience, too busy being busy, wanting to change the game with every touch he gets. We need to press up on them but more importantly reduce the acres of space between Bent and the rest of the team. We're really failing to get players into the box when attacking and the Swansea defence are having a very comfortable afternoon.

Impressed with Ireland, N'Zogbia and Carlos. The rest are at best just going through thre motions.

Now's the time for AM to earn his corn and kick the appropriate arses.

So negative attack from Zogbia. First he plays the ball 10 yards behind Gabby, then later runs the ball out.

This is the usual Zogbia 2nd half?

Blackburn beat United.

Chelsea were as bad as they'll be all year, I'm not sure we can use it as an indicator of this team not being shite.

My goodness. This is about as inept a display as I've seen in a good while. Spurs was a surrender, but in a game we should be winning this is horrendous. It's honestly as if the whole lot got wankered after the Chelsea game and have massive hangovers. Or the team thinks the game is at 7.30 or something.

Jimbo its simple mate, he can set a team up one way and make it very difficult for teams to break us down, hence Chelsea, if he deviates from that we are phucked, one trick pony, just the same at City, that's what i was saying earlier, problem is you can't stay in the Premiership playing like that, or at least have a decent season.

Said a few days ago, irrespective of the Chelsea result said the Swansea game was all important, and so its proving.

Why oh why did we have to win against Bolton and Chelsea. Losses in those games (too) and Mcleish could be gone now.

We're paying the price for having had so many managers in the last two seasons. We don't have a coherent squad.

13 corners and not even looked close to scoring from any of them.

I was speaking to a nose last night who said it was typical McLeish to put in decent performances against decent sides but totally fuk it up against the so called lesser sides.  Not that Swansea are given that they know how to pass the ball to each other.

Bannan on for Clark with 6 minutes to go.

Pointless really.

Bannan for Clark ...hmmm... Well - might as well... Petrov up front ;) Its not like we will counter

You'd think Petrov would need the rest but it is Clark for Bannan

Yet to score from a corner this season methinks?

I'd be confident in thinking we might be the only team in the PL that hasn't.

Do we have a plan for corners?  HAve less idea with attacking ones than we do with defending them.

Swansea have defended well, we knew they were tough to score against and they have stuck to their game plan well and got bodies behind the ball. Once again we thought we would win just by showing up.

Is the most sensible thing I've read on here for a while. We're clearly still in recovery mode. I expect survival this year with some high points and low points on the way. To still be calling for McLeish's head after the performances in December is wrong. And it's probably just as stupid to have assumed we were going to push on for the top 6 after the chelsea game.

That pisses me off. Bannans "tug" was barely there, and "clear foul" - yet Gabby's held arm was "not enough".

Fuck off..

Warnock's fucking mare of a backpass has completely undone the gameplan. Swansea really have had it very easy today.

Bent, edge of the area, runs away from a pass to feet. Shocking.

If i'd just landed on this planet and somebody said to me Bent is a top Premiership striker, i'd comment planet of loons here.

That's unfair because he is a good striker, just the way he's being played.

Wait for the boo's and rightly so IMO

Compare and contrast. Blackburn go 2-0 down but fight back to get a goal back and have been laying siege to Stoke but have just lost out.

We have barely had a shot at their goal.

I'd agree more if he wasn't making stupid decisions that make things worse.

Albrighton should've started, Bent should've been on the bench, you don't make a change like that to a side that's just come off a great away result.

Petrov has been poor in the second half but he stays on and clark comes off.

Persisting with the same back 4 for so long has been stupid as well, there's clearly problems back there but he seems to have no idea what to do about it so he just lets them make the same mistakes over and over.

We just look short of ideas, we hold onto the ball in our half and then lump it up when no one is open, we need to learn to be patient.

Been a regular fault of Villa, no ideas some times. We don't have a way of playing at home that is capable of breaking a resolute defence.

Inept, clueless, 94th minute before a real pop at goal against a team that hasn't won in 10 and that ships away goal for fun.

Terrible.
