Heskey, just why?!!!

I still remember him last year messing up a headed clearence in the last minute that allowed Huth to score.

No Bent either, not looking good is it?

I hope Bent's injured, because he better not be going. I'm disappointed Ireland or Bannan isn't in the side. I just hope Mcleish has learnt his lesson, I'm not sure he has.

I am more and more convinced Bent is off. He has been built up to be fit for sure today and is not in the squad.... wonder if Chelsea fancy a goalscorer at the moment..... would not shock me at all.

Surprised Bent's not in the squad. I've had a bad feeling about him these past few months...

Absolutely gutted that Collins is in the side. That's down to Hutton's idiotic challenge in the last game.

Ah well, come on villa!!

Oh and as for Heskey in the side, it is a totally shambolic decision after the other night.

It was for 60 minutes last season. We were excellent, fluid and looked dangerous. I'll be surprised if we match that with this side, but here's hoping . . .

Looks like we are beginning to get used to not having him. Still be surprised if he goes in Jan! Short and sweet eh?
Title: Re: Stoke City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on December 26, 2011, 07:05:54 PM
I can't see where bent would go. He isn't top 4 standard and I don't know who else could afford him.

I think this was an ideal opportunity to stick with the same formation as last week, get hold of the ball a bit and play around their straight lines with mobility and good passing. I think gabby can do the hold up play bit. I really find it embarrassing when heskey plays in midfield.

Anyway, enough grumbling, let's hope we can do it.

Ah good another bit of patronising commentary on the BBC live football thing -

- 'But is my express purpose this evening to bring you information on all things Stoke v Aston Villa, the late live TV game, eighth against twelfth, clearly Boxing Day's big clash.'

That's twice on the BBC today this game has been completely belittled.
Title: Re: Stoke City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: SoccerHQ on December 26, 2011, 07:07:27 PM
First half.

2nd half we barely kept the ball.

I was quite happy Crouch is ill/injured/getting burgled....until I realised Jones scored in both games last season.

And they have Pennant and Delap to throw on for the late onslaught.

Think this will be a behind the sofa watch.

No, but I'd be surprised we matched it with Stephen Ireland. I really don't think it's a game for him or Bannan from the start. Clearly it would be better if Bent was fit but as he's not I think Heskey is the right option for this game.

I think I'm inclined to agree with Chris on this one, I think playing Heskey does make some sense tonight. I'm quite interested to see how the defense does with Carlos at Right Back, too.

So, a pretty reasonable team selection all things considered, but it's a bit of a shame we have Stoke after last weeks performance! Against a less, er , physical side I hope we'd have tried the same again.

Michael Gray has just been saying the style we adopt in trying to counter attack is a disservice to our players and if we played on the front foot with the players we have we'd be a lot better off. He's right, because that's essentially what we did against Arsenal.

Exactly, he isn't good enough for the top 4. Spurs sold him when he was in similar form so who's going to sign him? 3-0 Stoke, we won't cope with their set pieces.

This game should not be the late televised one. They should have selected a game with more entertainment potential and one where the away fans would have had a long journey to attend.

Not surprised the mule is back: he can - apparently - defend corners.

This...play your own game AM. After a promising display last time out I fear any "momentum" will be lost. We are just asking to be bombarded..as if they needed any encouragement. Playing Bannan and Ireland may have seen us keep the ball more, and more importantly, away from them.
Oh well, can't say I am surprised.

That argument was the only going for him. The fact we have conceded more with him in than without disproves it.

Picking him even over a player like Gardner to play in midfield it is a travesty.

And Bent scores goals. Worse players have played for the top 4, and I reckon Chelsea and Liverpool would kill for him at the moment.

Sad but true. There's absolutely no denying that. McLeish and Pulis are managers who have not been able to tranform their football philosphies to this modern era. We play like it is still 1990's. Sky must be enthralled with their decision to put us and Stoke on Boxing Day. Still, we have countered their primary threat which is a key objective met so far. I'd like to see us get in on the ground a bit more to play it wide faster. Another nasty thing about Stoke is that they have one of the narrower pitches in the league to help their throw-ins so it makes it tougher for our wide players. One way or another we have to be them in the game.

Fuck's sake paulie give me a break. I only weigh in when people incorrectly state we are marking zonally. And every time I do you weigh in. Are you saying you wouldn't correct me if I seriously thought that all Villa's woes were down to something that couldn't reasonably be blamed? Because if you're going to blame tactics that we're not using, you might as well blame our ex-manager Bill Shankly for selling Messi to Small Heath for a set of tracksuits last summer. It's just as valid.

My stating the very sime fact that we don't mark zonally doesn't merit an argument, any more than someone saying we won the cup in 1957. Someone saying we won it last season however, needs correcting. I don't want people to engage about it, just to watch the game a bit closer so they don't keep posting their ignorance.

Why has he picked on Collins for "wrapping" when the Stokies have done it in the penalty area from minute 1?

My stating that we don't mark zonally doesn't merit an argument, any more than someone saying we won the cup in 1957. Someone sqaying we won it lastseason however, needs correcting. I don't want people to engage about it, just to watch the game a bit closer so they don't keep posting their ignorance.

Honestly, anything you like, I'm happy to agree with it if it'll make you stop.

I've got five Mingles left in the box. You can have them all.
