Clark and Cuellar start, good stuff. I'm really glad to see Ciaran play. However I reckon we'll get dicked, but come on your Villa boys!

I really hope Ireland has a good game tonight. For me he needs a run of games, and could be the important link player we have been lacking for quite a while.

Yep, why Ireland and not Bannan?
Who is "Williams" on the bench?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Arsenal Match Thread

I think a midfield 3 of Stan, Clark and Ireland could work well. Clark mopping up, Stan to make things tick, and let Ireland float a bit and make a few runs. If we can get Ireland into the game and he can get N'Zogbia and Gabby running down the channels, we could get some joy today.

Not carrying Collins, Bent and Heskey could help us a lot. Them getting in the team on name, regardless of form really won't help McLeish get any sort of game plan (if he does have one) running. Hopefully, if we start playing a balanced side and keep the form players in, then we might play better as a consequence. If we don't, then this club is truely doomed to suffer dredgery under Ecks reign.
Fingers crossed.

Bannan hasn't covered himself in glory to be fair, and he's looked very poor since the incident. Ireland's behaved himself this season and I hope, if we give him some kind of a run in the side, he might hit form. Lets face it, if Heskey and Collins get sustained runs in the side, no matter how crap they are playing, then I don't see why we don't give Ireland a chance, or Clark and Cueller. Hopefully McLeish will now give a run to some of the players who haven't thus far had a sniff.

Daniel Williams - a striker-cum-winger from the Academy. So three strikers on the bench: go, Alex, go!

Whatever the team McLeish picks, we'll lose.

I'm going for another poor performance coupled with a three nil defeat.

I'm as pessimistic now as I was last January.

Yep, why Ireland and not Bannan?
Ireland might have shown a better attitude in training? McLeish might think that he fits better with Clark and Petrov? He might feel that Ireland would match up better than Bannan against Arsenal's midfield and defence? He might feel that Ireland behind Gabby would work better than Bannan behind Gabby?

Any number of reasons.

It's a fair point, Tom, but if we have promising youngsters (how old is he?), we just need to play them. Mind you, if we have an overpaid player then we may as well put him in the window for January's transfer merry-go-round.

It's Derrick Williams, a centre back cum left back.

How the fuck is it that yet again, with 20 mins to go, I'm actually starting to get hopeful about the game, impressed with the lineup. In spite of all evidence and repeat disappointment?

Utterly unexplainable!

He doesn't know his best team
Yep, why Ireland and not Bannan?
Who is "Williams" on the bench?

Because Bannan is a player who gets his head up and looks for a pass. He also moves around into positions to get the ball and when he recieves the ball, looks to see who is moving for him to pass to. As nobody in the Villa side is capable of moving to recieve a pass (whether through skill or lack of confidence), then maybe it's not worth playing him. Bannan has resorted to trying too many spectacular passes. We've turning what could've been a good player, into a player destined to play football elsewhere.

It's the team I would have picked. Chris Smith will be on afterwards moaning about Clark but there's time for the lad to make up for it. A repeat of his brace in this game last year wouldn't go amiss.

Just realised that for the first time in ages I'm actually quite enjoying watching us play! Didn't see that coming. If we can just do this against teams lesser than the Arsenal, then I think lots of us would be instantly happier and we might just pick up a few wins along the way, too.

Might as well sell Bent, then.....;-)

Well, that's true, but then I suppose that all comes with playing, really.

Hi Risso, I reckon you're right but this set-up tonight looks like the best way of doing just that in my opinion, especially with the two defensive midfielders to back him up.

Good half of football, that. It's just a relief to see us looking like a team that can play a bit, to be honest.

Decent performance. Do not deserve to be behind at all.

N'zogbia and Albrighton very lively, Hutton having his best game, Clark's made a difference and played well apart from the daft challenge for the penalty.  Sad that Ireland's had to go of, as he has played really well. He's made some excellent runs into the box and passed it nicely.

Only let down has surprisingly been Gabby, whose has poorly been caught offside a couple of times, and given the ball away too much.

I'd also like to see Gabby chase down the bal a bit more. He's looking very Brian Little up there.

The only positive about losing Ireland is we have Bannan, who hopefully seen Ireland's display will try to raise his own game.

Good decisive punch out from Guzan on that corner, I hope he's been working on that part of his game. If he nails that, then I think he's a good 'keeper.

We could do with giving away fewer corners, though. I'm not THAT confident.

Much better from Villa though why it has taken half a season is beyond belief.Less hoof merchants Collins and Heskey, more bodies and balamce in midfield allowing the runners out wide to have a go. Not rocket science. Hutton you tool!!Maybe he wanted Christmas off - help Dazza with his shopping.
Let's see more of the same in the next 2 games as we had a few false dawns last season that came to nowt (Man U home / Chelsea away) and we'd died of death soon after.

maybe that's how long it takes for the manager to really realise that his first plan wasn't working and that he actually has good players at the club tom play a different style. We play like that every week we'll win more than we lose and as importantly McLeish will start to get more fans on his side. That aspect cannot be understated.
