Even when we were decent we got twatted in this one, no change here 0-4.

I think we will lose and lose heavily (on balance of play if not goals scored like at Spurs) but that is to be expected in all honesty. I just hope and pray that we're reasonably positive and try to play football and I hope that the Tumbling Bear is given a rest.

An embarrassingly easier than usual 4-0 win for them with AY scoring at least once.

I'd like to see the starting line up pretty much the same as yesterday's finishing line up. But we all know he won't do it. To try and contain Manure he'll go with:

                          Given
    Cuellar    Collins    Dunne   Warnock
Hutton    Herd    Guzan    Clark     Lichaj
                          Heskey

Bent

I wish!!!

An unexpected point from a battling performance.  1-1 Bent and Young for them.

Hmmmm... i'm really struggling to be interested in this. I think we will be woefully defensive and lose comprehensively 2-0 despite Man U not being great.

So do I turn up and be late for my works do.... or miss Stourbridge V Stevenage if I get a ticket... or do I freeze my bum off and see the above.... hmmmmmm, i'm really torn.

This is my least favourite fixture of the entire season, and has been for years.

The absolute worst thing we could do is to pull a repeat of Tottenham on this lot.

I'd rather we gave it a good fucking go and lost 6-0 than repeated that humiliating capitulation and kept it down to 2-0
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Newton Heath LYR Pre-Match Thread
Post by: TopDeck113 on November 28, 2011, 08:50:23 PM
We'll huff and we'll puff and we might even put in one of the better performances of the season so far.  And in the end we'll lose 2-1.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Newton Heath LYR Pre-Match Thread
Post by: olaftab on November 28, 2011, 09:15:29 PM
I think we can take them apart this year. With Heskey marauding down the right and left , Hutton nullifying Nani and Young, Collins tackling like a lion on hunt,  Ireland driving attacks down the centre I really don't know how they are going to keep us at bay. 3-0. Thank you very much SAF.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Newton Heath LYR Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on November 28, 2011, 09:20:21 PM
I really hope we try and get some proper footballers in the team, even if we lose. I'm losing patience with Collins, have lost patience with Heskey (though I've never hated him as much as some) and think N'Zogbia is still barely contributing albeit he's showing glimpses.

I really think this is a game to go 4-3-3 with three central midfield players. I'd go:

Given - Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock - Petrov, Herd, Bannan - N'Zogbia, Bent, Agbonlahor

Bench: Guzan, Cuellar, Clark, Delph, Jenas, Heskey, Albrighton

I do think Collins is liable to dive in and get bamboozled by their forwards quick movement and Hutton or Warnock could get sent off.

I worry about the officials after the issues they had against Newcastle. Can see them getting a penalty, us getting a red card and the usual 2 or 3 goals in 20 minutes that finish the game. No need for Heskey to start, not a problem him coming on for last 15 minutes up front if needed.

0-4 I'm afraid.
A Young to get one and our full backs to give away a penalty each.
We will finish the game with 10 men.
It will ruin my weekend.

I have that losing feeling about this one... but then I always do when Manure come to town. 1-3.

I would start:-
Givan, Carlos, Clark, Dunne, Warnock, Petrov, Herd, Jenas, Gabby, N'Zogbia, Bent.

AM would not approve so replace a few with those with the football gods that are Hutton, Collins and Heskey.

We were so damn impressive in this fixture a year ago. I genuinely felt Houllier was going to take us to the next level after we played such beautiful football against them that day. The future looked quite bright.

This year, Hutton and Heskey on the wings, Herd and Delph ploughing inn the midfield with Bent running around miles ahead of them and Gabby offering the only glimmer of hope.

:-( I hope I am proven wrong but I am braced for a good beating.

We're going to lose this one, but I'd go with the eleven that finished the game on Sunday. At least that way we have a chance of going down fighting. Anything would be better than the rabbits caught in the headlights display against Spuds.
There's no shame in losing to a better team as long as we make the effort to give them a game.

Last year's game was great, we had a go at them and even with a fairly young side with Hogg and Albrighton playing,  they looked vulnerable until we ran out of steam late on.  I'd love a repeat of that attitude.  Sadly I expect another dour, defensive damage limitation exercise and AM will feel justified when we only lose by two nil.

I had a very bad feeling about this game last year, and we came up trumps performance wise, shame we didn't hold out, obviously. I remember when they came to Villa Park in MON's second season and they hammered us 4-1 and Carson & NRC got sent off, probably as bad as it gets. I think we'll get done again by them. You know Ash will score.

It is very noticeable that all of AM's statements (see OS today about the December games) are about defending and tackling.  Not about passing the ball and threatening the opposition, to keep them on the back foot.  Oi, Big Eck: attack is the best form of defence.

2-1 loss.

SAF will field the reserve side, who'll stroll around at a snail's pace passing the ball to each others, while we are afraid of crossing the center line. Absolutely nothing will happen.

SAF watches the match, happy that none of his players have been injured or broke any sweat, but then remembers that they have to score to win the match. So after 70 minutes he puts on Nani and/or Hernandez, and Man U scores.

Then Man U really take the piss, letting us back into the game, and Gabby scores. So Man U have to score another goal, which they do through a Dunne OG, and then they easily contain us for the few minutes that remain of the match.

Afterwards, H&V is flooded with messages that Man U were crap and could have been beaten if we had tried to.

Yes.  and then The Hut 'neutralises' Rooney and we go ahead with a fantastic bit of midfield magic followed by a cross from the wing (Gabby) to Bent.

And completely own them with a trademark Gabby goal, beating everybody on the way, with help from CNZ.

Yeah, right, while Heskey applauds from the touchline.

In his little white socks, cheerleader's outfit and pom-poms.
Of course.

Villa to go seven-nil up then just about hang on to win after conceding six goals in the last twelve minutes of injury time.

McLeish to be criticised by everyone for being too cavalier and not looking to shut up shop after our seventh (Heskey's fourth) went in.

Herd-Jenas
N'Zogbia-Bannan-Gabby
Bent

I wish!!!

Utd are very weak in central midfield at the moment. Surely this would be a game to play Bannan from the start and see if we can dictate the play......................definition of wishful thinking?

Unexpected 2-1 victory for the Villa.

Good stuff mate..I don't know why I'm looking forward to it...the last time we beat them in the league was 19th August 1995....my 13th birthday and I got the home shirt with AST on it, if I remember correctly...COME ON VILLA!!!!

My starting line up would be:
Given
Cuellar (just because I do not feel comfortable watching Hutton at all ( he is not the same player I remember playing for Rangers in the Champions League in 2007)
Collins ( I thought he was a massive surprise when we signed him, but he has been poor for some time now...hope he plays out of his skin in memory of Gary Speed)
Dunne
Warnock
Albrighton ( has to get a chance and hopefully plays like he did in this fixture last year)
Bannan
Petrov ( need experience alongside a Bannan type player)
Nzogbia
Bent
Gabby ( always gives Vidic a torrid time which is amazing considering how good Vidic is)

And there we go..come on!!!!

actually, scrap Petrov, play Jenas.....

I'd stick Herd at right back, he had a stormer there v Wolves and Jenas and Delph in midfield, Delph had a great game against Man U last season I think?Maybe Cuellar or Clark instead of Collins, say

Given
Herd Cuellar Dunne Warnock
Jenas Delph
N'Zogbia Bannan Gabby
Bent

Guzan Hutton Clark Petrov Heskey Albrighton Ireland

The footballing equivalent of David Haye v Audley Harrison. Those attending will demand their money back and McLeish will claim we were trying to tire them out and hit them late on.

I'd play this:

                Given
Hutton Clark Dunne Warnock

          Jenas  Herd

                Bannan

     N'Zogbia Bent  Agbonhalor

Subs: Guzan, Cuellar, Collins, Delph, Ireland, Albrighton, Heskey.

But I think we'll stick to type in terms of the line-up and lose 2-0.

I can't believe people would drop Petrov. Comfortably our most consistent central midfield player this season. I'd play Petrov, Herd and Bannan in midfield in a 433. Jenas to come on if needs be later on.

Wouldn't play Cuellar at right back. He tends to struggle against tricky wingers like Nani / Young.

As always there is a danger of treating the opposition with too much respect. They scraped a win against Swansea.  Their reserves were beaten at home to a Crystal Palace team that had five non-first teamers playing.  Their best eleven has been made to look pretty ordinary against one or two of the lesser sides of the Champs League.  As a group of players they are not in the very best of form and I reckon they are not as good as they are cracked up to be.   We need to be at them from the word go, giving them absolutely no space.  Villa need to go into the match with the intention of attacking and winning-if we do that I reckon we can win it by the odd goal.

If we sit back or are in any way negative in our approach to this match then it will be, for me, totally unacceptable and I fear the boos would start a-ringing around Villa Park.

Surely Young will not be booed by anyone who is a decent person. He was great for Villa on the whole and I for one miss him very very much. He worked hard, he was creative, he beat players. I still like him alot and as long as he doesn't score and rub it in, I can accept him playing for someone else. Unlike Downing who I never liked anyway, and  the manner in which he left, made me justified in disliking the fucker every time I saw him playing for Villa. So many times, my dad and I would moan about players such as Jenas, Heskey and Downing being shit and still getting England call ups. They all ended up playing for us. Who next? Darren Anderton being signed up. I hope that Young has a stinker against us,but only because I know how good he is and was for us. And I want us to win. And that's it....I am babbling now. Just win Villa. Please. We are long overdue a win against Man Utd at Villa Park...and now I am stating the obvious. Time for a sleep

Trouble  with getting in their faces from the first whistle is Ferguson will be onto the ref and no doubt we'll get 2-3 players on a yellow card from early on and I don't want that as we say how useless we were against WBA with 10 men.

I'd much rather see us keep the ball well and create chances that way but I'm not that hopeful.

McLeish has been overly cautious so far while he remains, perhaps understandably, wary of making mistakes. This one is an oppoprtunity to let some of the shackles off and go for it a bit more in a game where expectations are (as the poll here suggests) low. Nothing to lose - lets go for it.

For me that means Bannan & Jenas must come in.

3-0 Villa win. Heskey getting all 3 and 'answering his critics'. There will then be a Facebook/Twitter campaign launched in order to persuade him to come out of International retirement in order to replace Rooney for the Euro 2012 campaign.

The campaign will splutter to a halt once it's pointed out that it would take him at least 7 years to score another 3 goals.

I get sick of the usual pre-match "there's no better feeling than beating United" or "United are the team to beat and we'll give it everything." We've been hearing that for 16 years or so and got nowhere. Other teams - lesser ones than us - can beat this prawn sandwich brigade and yet  it baffles me how even with some of our better teams we've never managed to beat the buggers at home once. I hope the players and the management can actually back their words up with the right attitude and commitment to win and we can do them over. because far too often in the past we've made it oh so simple for them when they've not been at their best.

Clark into defence for Collins would be a start - playing the traditional 2 blocks of wood in CB position against the fluid attack that MU normally provide would be crazy.
Play a midfield trio that can provide guile as well as energy.

Hmmm: that'll be the same team as last week then; gawd 'elp us, gov'nr.

I agree with all of this.  I've just taken a look at the official site, read the Manager's words and so on.  The whole small-time, institutional inferiority complex drives me mad.  It's been like this since we lost out on the title to them, I think.   When I hear Villa's side of the story I don't want to hear platitudes about Man Utd - I especially don't want them all over our official website.  Show them respect by all means but don't act as though we are a League Two club going starry eyed at the arrival of Real Madrid to our tiny little ground.  This small-time mindset that our club seems to have had ingrained within it since the days of Ellis really needs to go - it must make them feel they are 1-0 up before a ball is even kicked.

unfortunately our manager has not worked out that the only way to compete in games with the top teams is to close down the space in midfield and put pressure on the ball, no we retreat to the penalty box and stand and watch them come on to us with Heskey lumbering around, I am going tomorrow and fear the worst.

Dour game; Maure score two late goals beyond the time everyone has stopped caring; Media wax lyrical about how Man U have 'returned to form'.

I get a bad feeling about this.

United win.  2-0.

To do this you need relatively quick feet in midfield who can chase the ball and close down opposition players. We have Stan and Heskey in midfield.

He seriously cannot pick Heskey for this game or ever again.  Sackable offence.

if this happens I'll give us no chance.

If it doesn't and actually play for 3 points, we stand a chance.

Nothing worse than a gloating ManUre fan.

According to the Birmingham Mail & Daily Mirror, the manager wants Hutton to 'unnerve' Young for today's game. Considering Young has a propensity to 'go down', is giving away about 30 free kicks just outside our area a good tactic?

The thing is, Man U have been nowhere near their best recently.  If we had a real go then we'd have a good chance of a result.

I just can't see us having the bottle to do so though.

Is there anywhere I can put a bet on Ashley Young winning a penalty from Hutton?

No point mate. Even if you put down 100 quid, all you'll get back is £100.01

I'm expecting Man Utd to be at full strength today with Rooney and Herandez up front, Carrick in midfield, Ashley and maybe even Nani on the wings. All the squad players had to play 120 minutes during the week. It will be tough but not impossible, we just need to grow a pair and have a go at them.

I was thinking more in terms of their recent performances.  Isn't it something like 8 matches where they have failed to score more than one goal?

Definitely agree we should be very positive today.  I think i'll cry if I see Heskey in midfield.
