Any news of who's on the bench? Presume Jenas is so he can come on and get injured later.

What's the word for a sense of disappointment which is made both worse and better by the fact that you completely expected it?

Heskey in midfield. That's not a team selection, that's a cry for help. It's like he wants to be caught.

Did Jenas get injured stepping off the coach?

Heskey as a deep midfielder?

I feel sorry for Heskey.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Chris Smith on October 29, 2011, 02:17:39 PM
Why does N'Zogbia deserve to start?

He doesn't but neither does Albrighton and we're not over blessed with alternatives.

I'm pleased Herd has retained his place and other than Heskey for Bannan it's the team that started last week.

I just cant see this obsession that some mgrs seem to have with Heskey?

Heskey as a deep midfielder?

Probably more advanced so he can win flick-ons from Collins' hoofs
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: CJ on October 29, 2011, 02:21:56 PM
Surely with Herd and Petrov in midfield he could afford to start with Ireland? I just can't understand this obsession with Heskey - when he came on last week he ambled around and did the square root of fuck all.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: PaulTheVillan on October 29, 2011, 02:25:40 PM
I thought Herd looked good last game. Petrov needs to learn how to pass forward.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: citizenDJ on October 29, 2011, 02:27:54 PM
That's not a great team, is it?

Still, I suppose we can say that we did seem to do OK earlier in the season with Heskey playing........as an attacking midfielder.....

*shakes head sadly*

PS If there are any moderators around, could I have my name changed back to citizenDJ, please?

Ireland needs a run of games if we are to get his crazy head working anything like a top Premiership midfielder, leaving him out behind Heskey is just fucking stupid.

How many have we taken up there does anyone know? Fair play to those who have travelled, i'm not sure whether you unbelievable loyal or downright stupid.

Post by: Mister E on October 29, 2011, 02:39:50 PM
I'd have played Clark instead of Heskey, with a forward-minded MF to come on in the second half ... but we have what we have on the pitch.

Is it me or is there a general lack of interest in the game?
Spent the night out with  Sunderland supporting mate and we couldn't even raise the banter above "we're more shit than you" and "our manager will be sacked before yours"

Heskey - ?

I suspect 4 conceded from corners in the last 2 games had an influence on his thinking.

Piss poor. To be perfectly honest, some of the teams we've put out this season have been arguably the worst since Taylors 2nd era. Hell it's that bad, we could probably do with Kinsella and Leonhardsen in the middle of the park right now. What's more, I'd have Useless De La Crap over Hutton too.

Though Sunderland aren't very good, I just can't see us winning this. It would be an ugly 1-0 win with Gabby or Bent nicking it, but I don't think we're resolute enough to keep a clean sheet. Dunne and Given can't do it all single handed.

:(

Poor team selection from a poor manager.

Spot on, why isnt Marc being given a chance to find form like N'Zogbia is!

I really don't like Mcleish.

I'll back McLeish on that one, as N'zogbia has been absolutely brilliant in the PL for a season or two consistently for Wigan, whereas Marc was good for half a season and faded.  I'd consider N'zogbia the more talented player, and having spent the money on him, its understandable that he'd get the nod of two out of form players.

Nail on head. Hate him, but Heskey is more use to us than most of the others in there. He holds it up going forward allowing us to get people forward, and defends it in our box.

I disagree, I think Heskey's presence in the team actually makes it more difficult for us to retain possession because of the direct approach we always always take with him in the team. Without the ball, we're more likely to concede corners and goals.

Why is it when we take the lead you know there's a strong possiblity the opponent will equalize and probably win the match. I think we're currently at the top of the table of giving points away.

Where as if the opponent take the lead it's very rare for us to eqaulize, nevermind win.

It's bad enough there's hardly any talent in our team, but it seems they're hardly mentally prepared as well.

Not a disastrous first half, but not great either. We look very average, but then so do Sunderland, so we'll have to hope one of our 'magic' players (Agbonlahor, N'Zogbia) comes up with something before one of theirs (Sessegnon).

We're creating quite a few chances, but look ropey at the back. N'Zogbia and Gabby look dangerous I reckon. Bent and Heskey don't. Hutton dived in awfully for the goal and we don't look structured / organised. I reckon they'll score again so we'll have to as well.

It's difficult to over-state the impact of that. I had very high hopes for N'Zogbia (even though I knew he's no Ashley Young), but the reality is disappointing so far. I'm sure he'll come good (N'Zogbia, I mean), but having Bent in the team with next to no supply is unbelievably frustrating.

I hate Hutton.

He has been decent going forward today in fairness and linked well with Nzogbia.

Watching replay of the goal he takes more of the blame than Collins. No need of him to lose his position and get tight on Segesson. The space he vacated was critical for Wickham to get space for the shot.

We are creating some good chances. Gabby not happy on the left, giving away some stupid fouls. Bent not happy either with no real service.

Nzogbia has been much better today. Warnock has been ok again. Dunne has been solid as has Collins as per usual. Petrov ok, great goal. Herd struggling though not on the ball at all.

This is what I was getting at earlier. I think McLeish really needs to make up his mind on what he wants us to be. If he wants us to hoof it (which it does look like at times), then he might as well put Heskey up alongside Bent and let Bent go for the flick-ons and knock-downs. If he wants us to pass it around and work it into the box, or play to the wings and whip crosses in, then Agbonlahor and N'Zogbia as 'wide-attackers' either side of Bent as a sole striker would work.

I just think we're falling between two stools, really.
