It's only his twelfth fight, that's a great result, he still looks a bit raw but he has showed that he can mix it and take a punch or two.

It was possibly the worst fight ever, but it was also downright robbery. The fact that the winner had apparently been backed down from 5/1 to 7/4 in the days before is purely coincidental.

Title: Re: Boxing Thread 2011.
Post by: taylorsworkrate on December 11, 2011, 07:13:27 PM
Sounds like he was mugged.

Not really.  I had Khan down as winning 114-113, but quite a few of the rounds were highly subjective.  Judges in America tend to favour aggression and Peterson was constantly coming forward,

The first point deduction was unfortunate, but the second one, in the 12th round was sheer stupidity on Khan's part.

Khan will win the rematch, as he's the better boxer, and Roach will not allow him to become embroiled in Peterson's type of fight again.

Fantastic fight though.

Just watched the fight. I had Khan losing by a point with the deductions. Trouble is regardless of the deductions you don't win a fight boxing the whole thing on the back foot.

Good fight though.

This picture shows the "mystery man" with Lamont Petersons camp just after the fight.

I'm starting to think that there is way too much that just doesn't fit with this. The controversy over the docked points, the fact Khan was told he'd won, the ridiculous amount of time it took to collate the judges scorecards, the going missing of a scorecard which mysteriously showed up a couple of days later and now this unidentified bloke who has broken the rules of no one interacting with judges or officials during a fight, and is seen handling at least two pieces of paper, which are different colours, making it highly likely they are judges scorecards. (Each judge has a different colour scorecard)

I'm sure a "reasonable explanation" will be offered (concocted) as to why he was there and did what he did.

I'd go as far as saying that the result of the fight should be quashed and an immediate rematch ordered. I personally had Khan winning the fight by a round, but it was highly subjective and could see why certain rounds were scored to peterson.

However, too much of this just stinks.

decent fight, A better boxer than Chisora using than gameplan would've won easily I think, quite why people haven't targeted the ribs of the Klitschko's in the past is beyond me, they're both quite tall and thin (for heavyweight boxers) it seems an obvious target and even if you don't knock them down with those shots hitting a guy in the body enough just takes all the power out of their shots, at which point you can, as Chisora did, dictate the fight more and push them backwards.

Post by: paul_e on February 18, 2012, 11:57:27 PM
I love that klitschko specifically mentioned the body punches in the interview saying they didn't hurt.  I'm afraid his body language in the ring rather contradicted that.  I just hope other people have been paying attention, the heavyweight division really needs better boxers than the klitschkos at the top.  It's lost all it's appeal since Lewis retired because the pair of them have dominated it by slowing things down and tiring people out for late knockouts with big hits.  Once they're gone hopefully the quality of fighting will improve.  That all the big money has moved away from the weight says it all really.
Title: Re: Boxing Thread 2011.
Post by: David_Nab on February 19, 2012, 12:01:54 AM
They have made the best of their size advantage to dominate the division but I don't think either are great boxers.

what a shambles,
what was Haye there for anyway, getting involved, he had his crack and failed, just another load of self promotion, he would be better shutting up a bit and waiting to prove us all wrong in the ring, if he ever gets back in.

as for Chisora, when he's interviewed he comes over quite articulate for a boxer, but makes up for it with his childish antics elsewhere,
for his fight last night alone he deserves another crack, but he's lost a lot of friends over the last couple of days

edit -just heard that Chisora said he was going to shoot Haye, could lose his licence for that

Sounds like he was mugged.

Not really.  I had Khan down as winning 114-113, but quite a few of the rounds were highly subjective.  Judges in America tend to favour aggression and Peterson was constantly coming forward

And now we know why, Lamont Peterson, stripped of the titles he took from Khan last December when doped up on a testosterone pellet embedded in his hip (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/may/10/amir-khan-lamont-peterson-cancelled).

Another great day for boxing.
Roy Jones vs. Pawel Glazewski
Jones was supposed to face Dawid Kostecki in a ten round bout at Atlas Arena, Poland on June 30th. Days before the fight, Kostecki was convicted of being the ringleader of a criminal organization and was thrown in jail.[21] Pawel Glazewski stepped in to fight Jones. Jones defeated the 17-0 Glazewski by split decision. Jones was knocked down in round six. Many felt Glazewski deserved the decision in a close fight.[22] Polish TV scored the fight 97-94 for Glazewski.
I gave it to Glazewski by five.

i reckon Chisora might win tonight,
i see Haye is the overwhelming favourite with the bookies, but Chisora wasnt knocked out by Klitchco and Haye was, also Haye retired and Chisora is still trying to take his career forward. there is also a big difference in weight which can have a big effect.

Haye is definitely the better boxer more class but the longer the fight goes on the more i cant see Haye knocking Chisora out

Chisora to win for me, mainly because i have money on him

Haye of 2010 would win easily, Haye in 2012 is an unknown really, at his best he's was streets ahead of Chisora.

I think the wieght actually indicates things the other way, Haye was good because he was quick for his size, getting himself lighter might work in his favour to keep his speed up.

He had been better his last few fights before peterson, but he didn't seem 'right' in that one.  He has a great coach and working with Manny has helped him massively in learning to use his feet and use his hand speed (he's one of the quickest boxers I've ever seen when he gets the combos right).  If he can keep Garcia at range and step in, pick him off and step out he'll destroy him.

absolutely, that's why Haye blowing it against klitschko was so disappointing, if he'd won we might have seen a move away from the very defensive midset in the division currently.  They've done what the williams sisters have done in tennis, found a niche that they can excel in (they have great chins, are very strong and have great stamina, so they go into fights knowing they can do just enough each round to get it on points by landing a couple of big hits), the problem being that they've done such a good job that there's a great danger of it becoming the model of how to win at that level.

As for how Chisora has made a career as a boxer, read the above, he lasts 12 rounds easily, has a chin made of granite and is strong enough that he can overpower all but the best.  Against Klitschko he did well because he fights like they do.  Against Haye tonight he was shown up by a boxer whose technique is light years ahead.  Chisora landed a few big hits tonight (one of which was well after the bell) but it was like he was swinging hammers, Haye boxed clean and crisp and just picked Chisora's defense apart.  What Haye did tonight is what he should've done against Wladimir, but instead he tried to bulk up and match him for power, and sacrificed his speed to do it, which ruined him.

Post by: PaulWinch again on July 15, 2012, 12:33:54 PM
There is a way back, but his last three fights have raised questions over his training camp for me. Firstly Freddie Roach doesn't appear to give him full attention, and also the tactics seemed off. He ends up standing and trading which doesn't suit him at all. His poor chin means he should always be on the move, and box like he did in the first two rounds last night. He needs a long look at what he's doing, as he does have a lot of talent.
Title: Re: Boxing Thread 2012.
Post by: pmarachi on July 15, 2012, 01:27:06 PM
I was shocked that Garcia won, and not taking anything away from Garcia because I think he's a talented fighter, but really it was one great punch.  That one punch (the first knock down) changed the entire match.  And I guess Khan should have been ready of it, but these things sometimes happen.  Khan was never able to regain his composure after that knockdown and it was all down hill from there.

If that punch hadn't happened, and the fight kept going how it had been, I think Khan wins it.  It wasn't Khan's fault in that he did something wrong, but it was a one huge punch kind of fight.

I think there are aspects of his boxing that are world class and aspects that aren't. I think it's harsh to say he hasn't been world class, as he has been world champion. However his limitations mean he can't slug it out with people and in the last few fights he's been doing that.

i wonder how many amateur boxers at the olympics will now turn pro,
i suppose it all depends on the contracts they are offered from the promoters,

Joshua is probably the most high profile and was yesterday saying he was still an amateur, to be honest i think he needs to lean a bit more before turning pro, he was a bit lucky in the final, didnt do enough for me in the first two rounds, i think he would be found out pretty quickly if he was given the wrong bout early on

He might be one of the other lot, but fair play to Frankie Gavin for winning the British title last night.

And in complete contrast, the thoughts of a 'comedian' who's never entered the ring in his life, on someone who risks serious injury or worse every time he goes to work.

The Flintoff windmill is something I don't want to see in a professional boxing arena again. I think he thought he was bowling in the Ashes.

As for David Price, I want to see him take a decent shot. If his chin is good, he's going all the way Whoever this top ranked American is for his next fight, I hope he is a proper test.

Probably not for me to question someone who has boxed at such a high level, but I'm not sure I have seen too many fighters operating at world level who are as susceptible to body shots as Magee seems to be.  He went down after Kessler's first real attack to the body and then went down a number of times after.  It was the same against Bute.
