Yes. I'm knucking fackered. My saving grace is I've checked my prediction on our sister site and it's a 2-0 home win.

Villa 3 v 0 Newcastle.

Pay back for that horror show this time last season, Zog needs to come good here, think Bent will grab 1 and I'm convinced Gabby will just keep wowing us and I expect him to shine again for this at Villa park

I think this is a biggest test yet and i reckon it will be full on from both teams.

2-1 win in front of barely 30,000 fans.

Category A?  Newcastle?  FFS, what is this, 1995?

I think we'll have these, 3-1.  Yorke, Townsend and Savo.  Bobby Lee to get a late consolation for The Entertainers.

I fear a drab 1-1.  A scrambled effort from Dunne or Collins for us, equalised by a once-in-a-lifetime great finish from someone shite like Ameobi.  Steven Taylor will get away with a blatant handball on the goal-line in the first half, then get Delph sent off midway through the second half by feigning being shot through the neck with a bow and arrow.

Bent will score a brace. He needs to keep his gpg record up and score in front of the Holte as well. 6-0 home win, Gabby, Delph an N'Zogbia other scorers. REVANCHE!!!

2-1 Bent 26, Gabby 71  Best 88 for them.
Benty to get his first at the Holte!!

Was hoping for a decent crowd but after learning it's a catergory A game another 10 k plus empty seats!
Everton can generate a decent atmosphere with 32k crowds, wish we could.

I understand meanwoods predictions. If we draw against the half a dozen teams similar to us that will give us 12 points then win at home and draw away to the bottom 6 that will give us another 24 and probably secure PL status then scramble half a dozen points against the rest and we'll be top half again. Easy.

Given

Hutton
Collins
Dunne
Warnock

Clark
Delph

Ireland
Bannan

Bent
Gabby

That would be my experimental, attack minded team.  Delph and Clark to hold, then the 4 in front able to attack, with the full backs joining in when necessary.  Ireland and Bannan given free roles would be more than a handful for teams like Newcastle.

I don't see them as being as solid defensively as wolves so I'm hoping for a fairly comfortable 1 or 2-0 home win.  Providing we cope without heskey's physical presence by keeping the ball better with wee Barry in the team. I'd like to see the same as at goodison, with BB in for EH and maybe Clark in for Warnock, who ha scared me too often this season.

Looks to be the way JJ, this will be interesting, are we going for creativity or are we going down the road of holding a high line with a like minded player to Heskey and then contain,

Surely at home we are going to go for the result

Dare we risk Stephen Ireland.

He obviously has ability locked up there somewhere, logic tells you at some point that will burst to the top and flatten someone with a magical performance, he can't be that half hearted.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Newcastle United Pre-Match Thread

Do you think they system will change or will it just be bannan in for emile in the same formation?

I fancy us for this.  I haven't watched Newcastle this season having got rid of nolan and barton I'd have thought that they've lost a bit of toughness in midfield, which will hopefully give our midfield more time to play the ball about. I don't see them being as good as wolves defensively either.
This game is a chance for AM to start to appease some fans fears about negative football, if you ask me, and I hope he gets the boys playing some good attacking football.

Ireland's an awkward one 'cos he needs starts.

But I suppose he's gotta apply himself in training first. I think this is the game to play him in though, as Bolton midweek follows. We could give him those 2 and reassess it before QPR.

Ryu:

Think its likely that AM will give Bannan the starting place, as you say Newcastle are nowhere as strong as they where this time last season, that said there start has been pretty good and they hold 4th spot as we speak.

They took a Point of Arsenal, bt Sunderland and Fulham and drew with QPR, so on the face of it losing these players seems to have had little effect, everything is in place for both these sides to go for this, AM & Villa won't want to lose at home and Newcastle will fancy this one.

Can't see anyway it will play out as a bore draw, could be wrong but I think this will be the best game of this season thus far, big game.

The thing is that surely if Ireland was impressing and looking like he'd got his shit back together then he would be pushing for starts. But he isn't and Bannan is ahead of him in the pecking order and you have to ask why that is.

I'm baffled at Newcastle's good start to the season. How they kept a clean sheet on monday night I'll never know. Heskey's injury may result in N'Zogbia being pushed further forward so I'll go for a 2-0 victory.

He did pretty well in the 10 mins or so, he came on against Everton I thought. Putting in more effort than was seen last season. Still nearly as lightweight as Bannan though, Albrighton too is powder puff. So Jenas will definitely get chances aswell.

Heskey out gives us a chance to experiment, i.e. a convenient excuse to put the team right.

I think no matter what we do, if we play Gabby and Bent down the middle we will be light in midfield. Id go with Ireland, think to be fair to the lad he needs to be given starts to impress. Hopefully Hutton wont be as bad again. Definite argument for playing Herd ahead of him based on last week's form. If Newcastle play with one up top then might be worth brining Clark in ahead of Collins for us keeping the ball but McLeish definitely wont consider that.

Given
Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock
--Ireland, Petrov, Delph
-------Bannan---------
--Gabby, Bent----------

Lets hold Albrighton is reserve. He does give us width though which the strikers love. Argument if Jenas was fit to play one of Ireland or Bannan in the hole and Jenas deeper. But I think Jenas needs to earn his place in the side and not be dropped in like Hutton was last week.

he'll still be mental whether he finds his form or not- thats the problem. On his day he's a very good player but you don't know when his personality will rear its head again. Makes him a huge liability and obviously would make any club (apart from us apparently) shy off signing him. We had it before with SVC. On paper a very good player but likely to self-destruct at any time.

Thanks for that villanation. I guess their start has been pretty good, even if like us they maybe haven't had the hardest of games. 1-0 Bent.

Neither team are great going forward, but wee Barry might just get a bit more time and space to create at home than he does away. Indeed, I think we will see a lot more of him on home soil, away games he is still very light for. I would like to see Jenas fit and Gardner in the reckoning ASAP too, as Delph needs pressure on him for his spot.

Starting I would like to see Albrighton in, but the only way I can see that is to drop NZogbia on current form.

Is anyone's adrenaline pumping for tomorrow's game ?

For the first time in ages so early on in the season, I'm just going because I have a season ticket.

2-0 home win and pretty comfortable.

Newcastle lost their last four games at VP so not a ground they enjoy visiting and i think their early results have flattered them, good defence but not much else.

I think Albrighton will start after his assist last week and probably Bannan in for Delph so we'll push Gabby right upfront alongside Bent.

Hopefully the booing from the Newcastle fans will motivate N'zogbia to actually start playing like a 10m player aswell!

In fact, would add that it has almost got to the stage where am looking forward to only 3 or 4 home games this season - West Brom because my best mate supports them so it means something, Liverpool because Downing is hopefully going to get some stick, and probably the Manchester clubs because they play decent football !

I've felt like that for a while and only renewed out of force of habit and meeting up with mates who I wouldn't see otherwise. But then when I walk up the steps and see the pitch the adrenaline always gets going again

MOTD Commentator Steve Wilson's preview is rather spikey towards Villa fans including preposterous shaping of statistics to prove his own argument and I quote:

"McLeish is a proven manager with a tally of eight major trophies in nine seasons, which rather dwarfs Villa's eight major trophies in the last 54 seasons"

Expecting the draw but praying for a win.  Didn't realise Lichaj is out for 3-4 months  :o.  The defence picks itself.  But with Heskey out and Jenas also missing the midfield might be interesting.  Wouldn't be suprised to see a midfield 3 of Clark holding and Petrov and Delph in front.  N'Zogbia, Agbonlahor and Bent across the front.

3 points would be massive, and hopefully silence some of the critics.

just watching our 4-1 win versus Newcastle on AVTV. Brings back a smile thinking back to when we really were starting to become very relevant again in the PL. When MON was assembling a very strong side, and we had genuine cult heroes like Carew, Laursen, Bouma and a blossoming Ashley Young. Even Marlon had a good game that day. A Carew hattrick capped of by a thunderous penalty and the win took us to 5th. Bent is a super player, but we need some characters again in the squad to really get behind. Such a shame that it wasn't sustained and it all fell apart.

I hope that after we've got the ship back on an even keel we can try and get back to those sorts of days again. A big win tomorrow will be a nice start.

What's your point? What you said is correct, if we win we have made a solid start, but if we lose, we've had a pretty shit start considering the fixtures.

I've always said I dont want be like blues, where they play shite but churn out draw after draw with the occasional win. I'd rather lose a few games trying to win a few.

We've gone from one extreme with Houllier to the other with Mcleish, But I havent given up on Mcleish yet and I think we will play well tomorrow with Mr Bannan scoring twice.

2-0 Bannan x2

Smash hasn't scored for a couple of games, Gabby is on form, even Stan has his eye in - this will be a turkey shoot, 5 Villa goals at least. Newcastle are lucky to have points on the board and have big holes in midfield and a patched up front line - high tempo attacks from the kick off and lets have 3 before people start to drift out for half time refreshments.
