City chief Cook at centre of storm over email to Onuoha's cancer-stricken mother
Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook could come under scrutiny from the Premier League and the Football Association amid claims an offensive email was sent from his account to Nedum Onuoha's mother.
The distasteful message appeared to mock Dr Anthonia Onuoha's battle with cancer after she had written to City football administrator Brian Marwood last October to settle a dispute over her out-of-favour son's contract.
Dr Anthonia had explained to Marwood that although her body was 'ravaged by cancer' she was still able to represent her son.
She was left stunned, however, at the indecent reply she allegedly received from Cook, addressed to Marwood, which read: 'Ravaged with it!!!... I don't know how you sleep at night. You used to be such a nice man when I worked with you at nike (sic)'
Hurt and humiliated by the alleged sent message, Dr Anthonia replied the next day, saying: 'Thanks very much for your insightful email.'
Cook, who infamously caused a storm with his comments describing Kaka as a 'bottler' after failing to sign the Brazilian from AC Milan in 2009, insisted he was on holiday in South Africa when the vile email was sent and apparently apologised for the 'embarrassment' it had caused.
However, he is said to have claimed that after launching an internal investigation, he discovered that a member of his staff had sent the message to Marwood as a joke. City have so far declined to comment on the story.
Former England Under 21 international Onuoha spent last season out on loan at Sunderland and although he hasn't featured for the club this season the 24-year-old was named in Roberto Mancini's official Barclays Premier League squad.
Almost a year later, Dr Anthonia has urged the FA and the Premier League to investigate the matter.
'When I opened my emails and saw the message, it was the worst day of my life, even worse than being diagnosed with cancer,' she told The Sun.
'It's incredible that any human being would write this. It's unforgivable.
'When Cook replied to me, he said that he was confused, that he'd been away on holiday in South Africa and that somebody had hacked into his email account and that whoever had sent the email to Brian Marwood meant as a practical joke.
'The feeling of humiliation still persists. Now I want the FA and the Premier League to see what's happened and to take the appropriate action.'
They might have more money than most of the rest of the Premier League put together, but class can never be bought.

If you were sitting on the fence as regards to whether to despise this creature or not, this should help you make your decision. He really is quite the wanker.

Is there a more vile man in football at the moment?

I fully agree.
-
He does appear to be a bit of a scumbag but why has it taken almost 12 months for this to come out? Something fishy going on...
-
Looks like he's been stitched-up.
-
Either way he is in a lot of trouble according to today's papers he is fighting for his job.
-
Either way he is in a lot of trouble according to today's papers he is fighting for his job.
And rightly so. Is he still claiming that someone hacked his account?
-
I don't wish to defend the Bluenose wanker but it is intriguing that this has come out a year later and via The Sun.
-
So, someone hacked his account, and the full extent of their malicious behaviour was to send this one email?
Right.
-
I'm sure Mrs Onuaha is a lovely lady and I hope she beats her illness but is receiving this email really worse than being diagnosed with cancer?

Yes, that did cross my mind too.
Random thought: She got this a while back, wisely decided to sit on it for a while, asked for something for her boy (cut price move away maybe?) and when rebuffed by Mr Cock decided to let those warriors of justice at News International hear about it.

I must admit that was my initial, and rather uncharitable, assessment.
-
I'll own up to thinking that too.
-
It's pretty obvious that is what her motivation is, but then it doesn't excuse his vile behaviour.
-
Yes it's out of order and whoever wrote it is guilty of real poor taste. However, of those who are truly enraged by it, how many of you laugh at sickipedia or have enjoyed Gary Glitter style jokes? The comments were in poor taste but so is playing it out in the media.
-
I can't imagine man city are going to tread onuoha more favourably because of this. Maybe she didn't go to the press because she didn't want the whole world to see a degrading email about her and has only gone public now because the FA and PL have done precisely nothing about her complaints.
-
It's pretty obvious that is what her motivation is, but then it doesn't excuse his vile behaviour.
Absolutely agree.
-
I thought that too, Why wait a year? Having had a loved one have cancer it's horrible receivng an email like that is no way near as bad.
Having said that Cook is a twat
-
It's pretty obvious that is what her motivation is, but then it doesn't excuse his vile behaviour.
Hold on a moment, his version of events haven't been disproved yet.

If you're saying innocent until proven guilty then fair enough, but the bloke still has a masters in twatness.

Oh yeah, he's definitely an expert twat. That comment about Kaka being a "bottler" because he didn't want to play for the fantasy 11 should have been enough to have him banished from society.
-

Sorry, but I don't agree with what you're getting at at all. Unless you have told sickipedia or Gary Glitter style jokes to, say, a victim of paedophilia then comparing the two situations is utterly pointless.
As for this instance, I'm not sure he (even with his mega twattishness acknowledged) would be so callous as to send that to someone in an email. I'd be shocked if he did to be honest. If it is proven to have been sent by him, then he should be sacked, no question.

According to the newspaper report the email sent to Dr Onuha in error and was supposed to be sent to Brian Marwood.Maybe the analogy wasn't great but i can't see anyone actually finding cancer amusing in the same way there's nothing amusing about paedophilia.

In The Sun Manchester City embarrassment Garry Cook is "fighting for his job" today over the email to Nedum Onuoha's mum, an email The Sun is still describing as "sent from his account".
On this note The Mill would just like to suggest that we all remember that Garry is as much the victim here as anyone else. And also that perhaps some kind of government taskforce should be set up into this new kind of "hacking", a specially targeted kind of e-crime whereby hackers access your account, compose an email that is convincingly written in something that sounds like your own voice; and which is offensive – but not too offensive to give the game away; and then having bothered to go to the trouble of accessing your account send just one private message. Plus they're also clever enough to remember to make it look like an email sent in error to the wrong person.
The cunning of these cyber criminals knows no bounds. They must have sat down and really thought very hard about how to make it look exactly like you'd sent the email yourself in error, having added the wrong person to the "send" field, in the middle of a private banter session with Brian Marwood. Amazing really. But of course there's no way that could have actually happened because Cook says he was "hacked" and The Mill feels sure a member of his private staff will be produced to admit that, yes indeed, they did hack his email and have now been brought to justice.

This is the official statement from the MCFC website
Manchester City Football Club announce that the Board led review initiated on Monday of this week, as a response to allegations made to the football club, football authorities and a national newspaper by Dr Anthonia Onuoha, has been concluded.
As a result, the Club can confirm that there is foundation to Dr Onuoha’s allegations and the Chairman has written to apologise to Dr Onuoha for any distress caused.
Following the findings of the review, Chief Executive Officer Garry Cook has offered his resignation, which has been accepted with regret by the Board.
Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak responded to the decision, saying: “Garry has made a remarkable contribution to Manchester City Football Club over the past three years.
“His judgement in this matter should in no way lead to his accomplishments being overlooked. On every level, the club is unrecognisable from the organisation which he inherited and our staff and supporter services, community outreach and commercial activity have seen unparalleled growth under his direction with yet more projects to be realised on the horizon.
“On behalf of Sheikh Mansour and the Board, I would like to thank him for his energy and tireless commitment to serving all those connected with the football club. He will always be welcome at Manchester City.”
Garry Cook said: “I am privileged to have held my position at Manchester City Football Club and to have experienced the opportunities that it has presented. The privilege is in part offset however by the significant personal focus which has at times, detracted from the magnificent achievements of those working at the football club.
“It is that factor, together with my error of judgement in this matter that has prompted me to reach this decision, which I believe is in the best interests of the football club.
“I wish Roberto and his team and all of the fans and supportive partners of the Club the very best for exciting times ahead. I would also like to put on record my unreserved thanks to Sheikh Mansour, Khaldoon Al Mubarak and the Board and all of the very talented staff at the Club for their support throughout my tenure at Manchester City. I know the Club will go from strength to strength.”
Whilst the Board commences a search for a new Chief Executive Officer, Director John MacBeath will fulfil the role of temporary CEO, working closely with the Board.

So, no apology to Mrs Onouha?

Nice. So you'd have a repulsive cretin who takes the piss out of cancer victims over a bloke doing a job that you don't happen to agree with. Faulkner's not the most brilliant chief exec but that's quite the unbelievable statement.

It's like the debate of whether you'd have Joey barton playing for us or not.
The moral fibre of this club should never be compromised.

The dam has been breached. If we're willing to take one directly from there after he lead them to relegation twice, we can hardly baulk at taking one who has been instrumental in taking Man City to where they are now during the same period.
-
Just out of interest, how influential has he been at Man City? You could have had Jedward at the helm and they'd still be where they are now with the money they're spending!

what about his earlier comments about his account being hacked -i take it that was made up bollocks to deflect away from his shameful behaviour?
Good riddance to him!

Instrumental? I can think of a few billion reasons more instrumental in Man City's emergence than that piece of shit.

I think you're almost certainly colder than most of the population if you're confirming Toronto is correct in what he's suggesting. And somewhat deficient in empathy and compassion.

He was clearly taking the piss out of Marwood. It was unfortunate that the woman was copied on the email but I tend to think that her assertion that 'When I opened my emails and saw the message, it was the worst day of my life, even worse than being diagnosed with cancer,' is worthy of at least one raised eyebrow.
I'm pretty confident that my compassion, empathy and support for cancer victims that I know stands up pretty well to TV's faux outrage.
-
Cook as an absolute clown... Yes we can do better than faulkner, but Cook certainly isn't the answer!
-
Let them all burn...Cook, Scudamore, Gill, Kenyon, Gourlay and their types!
-
Sad day: there's now one less reason for not liking what Man City are doing to football.
I've no doubt that in the fullness of time he'll resurface somewhere, but just like those so-called top managers who in reality would be unable to do the job without a multi-million pound transfer budget and accordingly wouldn't touch, for example, the 2011 version of AVFC, I can't see him Chief-Exec'ing without some other Sheik's sovereign wealth behind the club concerned.
-
Another example where the cover up not the crime caused the harm. A simple apology by him once the error was realised and this could have been badged as unfortunated. The consequential dishonesty is what has done him.

no, no VD, you misunderstand. Not outraged in the least, and my post certainly had no element of faux in it. I'm sure you have plenty of empathy and symptahy for cancer victims. I was just pointing out it was a ridiculous post given that we know why Cook had resigned and yet you would welcome him with open arms to Villa Park should the opportunity arise.
-
Garry Cook is a ****** of the highest order and on equal terms with Scudamore.
-
I must admit to being one of those people who had no idea of the existence of Garry Cook before all this erupted.
By that I mean that I had a vague idea that Manchester City would probably have someone with a job title like the one that he had, whatever that may have been, and that he would have trousered an enormous salary for doing it, whatever he might have done, and that a lazy owner and a confused football manager may have been disinterested enough in his existence to give him licence to make a tool of himself in the dim twilight zone of 'management responsibilities', wherever they might have resided.
Now, can anyone tell me how Manchester City will be worse off as a result of sacking a bloke whose sole contribution to the club seemed to be sending daft emails to his mate?
-
It was a crass joke between mates, the sort I reckon many of us have made at some point. We've got a whole thread dedicated to celebrity death watch.
The way I read it was taking the piss that she used the word ravaged in an email to the club which does strike me as a bit odd, why couldn't she just say she was ill?
The fact that she's waited 12 months to make it public suggests that she was hoping to use it in negotaiations for her son. Once it was then he had to go but he's only really guilty of messing up his send and forward functions.
Next to no chance of him coming to work for us even if we wanted him, which I hope we don't, he's a blues fan.

There's a big difference between taking an ex-employee and a supporter.

Yes, while in no way wanting this berk at my club trousering fortunes while we have our own berk trousering slightly smaller fortunes for doing the same thing, there does remain an element of sympathy.
While to the outsider the likes of Keys, Gray and Cook may seem like reprehensible twats deserving of all they got, would we really think that losing your job as a result of a crass comment was fair if we worked with them and knew them on a daily basis? Most of us were even willing to cut BFR some slack in the face of some pretty damning evidence.

Not far off, but he is rightly in hot water for 2 reasons. 1, the stupidity of trying to claim his account was hacked and then alledgedly lying to said cancer stricken person about the idea that City had found the a culprit and disciplined them when all he needed to go was apologise a great deal to her, and 2, having a history of stupid blunders like this one.
