Quality. The high point for me last year was the lad in the home end running the full legnth of the home section to offer the Villa fans out whilst thrusting his imaginary monster size penis backwards and forwards in a spectacular display! Once this parade of fierce aggression was complete he turned to revel in the applause of his adoring public!

Worth the entrance fee alone!

Scottish voice: "Is this your seat?"

Went to this last year, think I'll be going again. Will probably sit with my Walsall supporting mate in the home end though. Last year there were more Villa shirts than Walsall in the Floors 2 Go stand.

I run the Wharf Bar in the town centre and I'm told we don't do too bad of a job....for Walsall anyway so anyone going into town for a drink do pop in and have a beer.  We have got real ales, very reasonable prices and we are next to the canal so again for Walsall isn't too bad aesthetically speaking.  We have a car park and are next to the Art Gallery.
We have our own cab firm too so can arrange a convoy of taxis to Bescot for £4 per cab.
Thanks for reading.

Last season we played Carew, Wiemann, Albrighton, Clark, Bannan and Lichaj, so we're talking reserves usually. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see a front line with Delfouneso in it, and Gary Gardner in there somewhere.

I think it'll be a mix.

A few kids thrown in with one or two seniors Mcleish will want a look at, such as Warnock and Makoun.  Will he play Given to get him used to a couple of defenders?  Maybe something like

Given

Lichaj
Collins
Clark
Warnock

Albrighton
Makoun
Delph
Gardner

Delfouneso
Bent/Gabby - half each!

Prediction wise fuck knows, but I'll say 1-2 to Villa.

Boldmere St Michaels 3-2 Villa XI (http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10265~2397839,00.html)

Quote
Villa's second string began preparations for the 2011-12 campaign with a defeat at Boldmere St Michaels, despite leading twice through Graham Burke and Janoi Donacien.

Kevin MacDonald took a young team to Church Road, with all of the 19-man squad getting vital match action under their belts.

It didn't take long for the claret and blues to find their groove as skipper Gary Gardner and academy star Darious Darkin threatened with early efforts.

And although MacDonald's side went away on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline, the contest was a valuable exercise ahead of another potentially exciting season for the club's reserve and youth sides.

This time last year Irish forward Burke earned the distinction of netting Villa's pre-season goal in a 2-1 defeat at Basingstoke - and he repeated the feat here against the Mikes.

On 14 minutes, Burke received possession on the left flank, skipped past his marker and powered an angled left-foot drive across Boldmere keeper Chris Gibson to put the visitors in front.

Two further Villa attempts followed in quick succession - Daniel Johnson's low drive creeping just wide, while a 30-yard piledriver from Gardner cannoned off the goal frame.

The non-league outfit, who went close early on when Donacien and Benjamin Siegrist combined to thwart Tom Overfield from six yards, levelled on 28 minutes through the first of two goals from striker Jozef Jakab.

Jakab reacted quickest to pounce on Overfield's flick-on and slot past Swiss keeper Siegrist.

But 10 minutes later Villa regained the initiative when Donacien supplied the final touch at the back post after teenage defender Richard Bryan steered Darious Darkin's cross back towards goal.

Reserve team manager MacDonald shuffled his pack in the second half in order to give his starlets the opportunity to step up their match fitness.

Replacement keeper Elliot Parish was called into action soon after the restart, showing tremendous agility to palm away Overfield's header.

However, Parish was beaten on 53 minutes as Jakab pounced on a loose ball before lifting his shot over the former England U20 custodian from a tight angle.

On 68 minutes, Overfield scored what proved to be the winning strike, beating the offside trap before keeping his cool to lob Parish from the edge of the penalty area.

The away side's best chances of the second period came courtesy of wing duo Josh Barton and Courtney Cameron.

Northern Irishman Barton cleverly weaved his way inside from the right touchline and drilled his shot wide across goal, while Cameron was inches away with an audacious 20-yard chip.

Villa's second string are in action again next Tuesday when they face Chasetown at the Scholars Ground [ko 7.30pm].

VILLA: Siegrist; Nelson-Addy, Bryan, Donacien, Caira; Lampkin, Gardner, Darkin, Cameron; Burke, Taylor. Subs: Jenkins [for Nelson-Addy, HT], Parish [for Siegrist, HT], Barton [for Gardner, HT], Johnson [for Lampkin, 18], Webb [for Donacien, 87], Melvin [for Barton, 78], Ward [for Darkin, 84], Eminoglu [for Taylor, 78].

I'm one of the least pessimistic people on here, but I'm still not going to be doing handstands over beating a team like walsall. In much the same way, I wouldn't be claiming relegation was imminent if we were 2-0 down.

Hopefully Ireland's injury isn't too serious.

Yep Eastie finished 1-3 and sounded like a very good run out, especially when you consider Walsall have had 2 or 3 friendlies already.
High praise coming for Ireland, shame about the twinge in his hamstring, if he stays fit he could be the new signing we're all craving!
The Fonz sounded very lively second half, just hadn't worn the rust off his scoring boots yet.

Fonz had two pretty easy chances, should have had a hattrick. Still looked very lively though.

Ireland looked excellent before he went off, linked up very well with Warnock. Albrighton had a bit of a stinker.

Decent start and some encouraging signs, Ireland being an obvious one and if he can build on that and maintain some sort of form a few problems are instantly solved. The killer pass he played for the second goal typified the player I thought we signed.

Ireland played well until his injury - a not-serious hamstring we believe. Warnock looked good and Makoun ran well off the ball, which is obviously something we'll have to coach out of him.

Of the yoof, Johnson impressed and Delfouneso looked very good apart from his one on one miss.

All in all a useful workout.

Ireland was excellent, some lovely through balls, you know, the one's we've been crying out for? Maybe McLeish also does hypnotism?
Defence were good both halves.
Bent is a natural, if only DelFonz was, he did all the hard stuff, got into all the positions, couldn't hit the proverbial cow's arse.
The team gradually morphed from a possible starting XI (and Heskey) into the yoof team, like the look of Johnson though, and not only the dreadlocks.

I think sometimes playing with seniors takes him out of the comfort zone and and when hes more relaxed hes more instinctive and lethal.
Once hes had more exposure to it he'll be fine. Better than fine, he's a wonderful talent.

The thing with the one on one is he shouldn't have looked to see if he was onside, should have just slotted it. Credit to the keeper though it was a great save, not Walker though, sub keeper in second half.

Fonz is definitely a good finisher. He'll get there.

Couldn't finish his dinner last night. Muffed an open goal and a 1 on 1 before burying a point blank header into the away end. Good approach play but he really isn't a finisher
Title: Re: Pre-season Friendly v Walsall

A good workout but that's it for me, still think we're lightweight in the middle. On Fonz he's definitely a finisher, I'd rather him fluff the ones against Walsall as it means jack shit, I remember a Luke Moore scoring goals for fun in pre season and then did nothing when season started. Blackburn will be a good test.
Title: Re: Pre-season Friendly v Walsall

Fonz had two pretty easy chances, should have had a hattrick. Still looked very lively though.

Ireland looked excellent before he went off, linked up very well with Warnock. Albrighton had a bit of a stinker.

Heskey played very well on the left wing, who needs Ashley. *stickyouttonguething*

Bannan needs to stop pissing about though cos he won't get that much time in the Prem.

Disagree with this totally, for heaven's sake it was only a freindly. I thought he was great. It's nice to see a kid of his age spraying the ball around the pitch. Not all his long range passes came off, but at least he has the confidence to have a go. We need to encourage him, not tell him to stop pissing about.

Other than that, Warnock and Ireland looked as if they had a point to prove, Fonz looks as if he's coming on nicely as a footballer and Bent could well turn out to be the best money this club has spent in a long time. Overall, really enjoyed it.

It's walsall. And a friendly. Bit of perspective please. Encouraging, but it's a million miles away from proving anything.

I agree

Whilst I would like to be coming in my pants this is our starting 11 against a team that were nearly relegated.

Good for morale yes but reading anything else into it no.

Most worrying for me is playing heskey and a 442

I thought Ireland was superb in his short time on the pitch.

Petrov & Makoun were Ok, both coming quite deep to get the ball, but quite a few passes were under hit.

Heskey was effective wide, probably because we wern't hoofing it to his head all the time.

Delfouneso will not get easier chances than last night, he should have easily had a couple of goals.

I thought Warnock looked sharp & was especially good coming forward.

Didn't think much of Albrighton, I know it's only one pre-season game but it was worrying. He struggled against a toss team. Hopefully he'll have better games before the season starts.

Heskey played because he had to. And everyone deserves a run out. If Ireland and Warnock deserve a shot, then surely Heskey does?
Ireland was encouraging. Warnock was solid. Obviously, opposition was poor. But, we did a decent Job. Bent, again, in the right place at the right time. Albrighton looked a bit rusty, he's going to have to get on his game sharpish, he's our only winger.
The worrying aspect from my point of view, was the complete lack of pace in the side.

Heskey played wide left of a 4-3-3 with Albrighton on the right.
Ireland played more advanced of Petrov and Makoun.
I like Makoun. He likes short, first-time passes, the other players around him don't always seem to be on his wave-length though.

That formation I like - just not with heskey in it. let's be honest he aint going to trouble premier league defenders, would have prefered Fonz to start - he is the future not 32 year old ivanhoe

My only concern is petrov and makoun sittining deeper and only having Ireland in front of them, bearing in mind a decent team will steam roller straight through the middle

It's always difficult to know exactly how telling a pre-season game can be.  If we had lost then the more pessimistic would be all over it, but in truth the optimistic would then be playing it down as 'only a friendly'.

What I take from it is more to do with the individual players:-
Bent scoring
Ireland playing well
Warnock getting a standing ovation
Dunne looking trim

Result aside, take those things into the new season and we'll be doing a lot better than some have predicted.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Well over 5,000 of that crowd must have been Villa.
Rather fizzled out as a spectacle as all the changes were made but you expect that.
Encouraging signs from Ireland, Albrighton needs sharpening up a bit if he is going to supply the ammunition for Bent (1st outing...I'm sure he will).
I think Petrov was on the pitch the longest and was pulling all the strings but I doubt he would get that much time in the Premier.
My advice to Walsall would be to get a right back, to all intents and purposes 1st half they didnt appear to have one.
That lad in the Walsall section should be ....errrrr sectioned.

I'm pleased with that formation, it's what I want to see and the formation I believe we'll get the best out of Ireland from.

Petrov or Clark holding infront of the back 4, Makoun playing a little more advanced to move the ball onto Ireland to get it through to the strikers. All the more reason to gety N'zogbia who'd fit nicely into that formation.

Pretty encouraging overall- but depressing to think that Petrov is still around.

Why?  He's a good player and a solid professional that the young lads could do a lot worse than learn from.  He does have a stamina issue for 90 minutes of PL football, but contributes until his legs start to go.  What we need to do is use him intelligently and once he starts to struggle make a change.

Big Eck agrees

Darren Bent once again showed his ability as a world-class finisher but it was youngster Nathan Delfouneso who caught McLeish’s eye – albeit for the wrong reasons.

McLeish said: “Nathan came on and could have scored four in the second-half but he is a young player who is getting experience from the Darren Bent’s of this world.

“I think that he could have had a hat-trick, at least, but the positions he got himself into were tremendous and he was really lively.

“I told him he might only get one chance and he must learn to take it so that was an education for him because he is someone who looks like he has a bright future.”

Interesting... I think a 4-3-3 kind of formation will be the one that suits us best this season, as things stand. Three midfield players makes us solid - we haven't got the strength there to go with two central midfielders - and three forward players could work well for us. Again, we haven't got any wingers, other than Albrighton, but we have a couple of strikers who are comfortable playing slightly wide: Gabby and Delfouneso. If we did get N'Zogbia, he'd slot in perfectly on the left of a front three.

Two other things:

1. Can anyone tell me more about Burke? Getting the odd rave review here, don't know much about him.
2. That clip of the Walsall fan has depressed me.

Graham Burke. Let's see.
Young Irish lad (we have a few of them). Quick, skillful, eye for a goal. 17 years old.
Plays as a striker or a winger. Or rather he was a winger who is used increasingly as a striker in academy/reserves.
He's coming through the ranks strongly and could be an outside bet for a squad number this season.

Made me feel alot better about the new season, particularly in the practically new signings in Ireland and Warnock.

3,974 officially (presumably in the two stands) so make that about 4,500 in total.

Agree with that assessment PTV, particularly re: MA. Wind back twelve months to the equivalent pre-season fixture and Albrighton (and Carew for that matter) were unplayable with the Walsall left-back feigning injury a couple of mninutes before half-time because MA was so hot. I was in the side stand I'm sure there were plenty more in the side stand than number of seats.  Outside that side stand there were two lots of turnstiles for ticket holders then a long queue paying cash at turnstiles towards the floors2go end. I would guess they just stopped when they thought it was 'about`full and the rest then went round to the other side stand.

Didn't Mcleish get a good reception? I hope so, there's no point in complaining about it now.

Aye. seemed premature to me to get on his back in pre-season. Probably the usual press hatchet-job.

You've gotta love this comment

As a Blues fan for many years, i was sorry to see mcLeish leave, but with the club imploding and likely to go into administration, I like many other Blue noses will follow Mcliesh across the city and adopt Villa...Up the Villa we're going into Europe

Just an observation from half time at the game...

Bannan, Beye and Clarke were warming up knocking balls around; Bannan looked class with good skill and ball control, Clarke not so bad but not great, Beye couldnt even control the ball most of the time and looked like he couldnt be bothered.

Beye isnt good enough to wear a Villa shirt, let alone be in the squad.

A Newcastle fan mentioned that we signed Beye injured and he was amazed he passed his medical.

Did anyone else see two lads get chucked out for squirting ketchup into the crowd at half-time?
